Now more than ever, PC gamers value top-quality displays that add clear, responsive visuals to their gaming experience. Samsung’s new CFG70 curved gaming monitor has proven a hit with hardcore gamers because of its ability to deliver a curved display, rapid response time and vibrant Quantum dot color. Samsung Newsroom interviewed the four developers behind the new display, who discussed its design and innovative features in depth.

The main developers behind the CFG70 gaming monitor (from left): Senior Engineer Sung Duk Cho, Assistant Engineer Yoon Ah Kim, and Senior Engineers Hee Bok Song and Jung Woo Hong of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display team.

Q: Tell us a bit about the CFG70’s response time and the value it brings to the gaming experience.

Hee Bok Song: A gaming monitor’s basic job is to provide smooth graphics without afterimages. We used to measure display response time in terms of panel response, but nowadays we use MPRT (Moving Picture Response Time). The CFG70’s MPRT is one millisecond, which is the fastest in its category. Although there are other monitors that feature a 1ms response time, what makes the CFG70 special is that it is the first to feature a curved display.

The CFG70 features three essential virtues of an ideal gaming monitor: a 1ms response time, 144Hz refresh rate and curved display.

To foster an ideal gaming experience, we incorporated a 144Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync technology. Modern gaming PCs boast high frame rates, and sometimes monitors with lower refresh rates cannot display their graphics properly. However, with FreeSync and a 144Hz refresh rate, the CFG70 provides gamers with smooth, uninterrupted visuals.

Q: What differentiates the CFG70 from other monitors in terms of picture quality?

Jung Woo Hong: The CFG70 is the first monitor equipped with Quantum dot technology. The biggest difference between this and monitors without Quantum dots is in the range of hues that can be reproduced, which indicates how well a particular display can create lifelike, original color.

Common monitors are capable of implementing 72 percent of the PC-standard ‘sRGB’ wide color gamut, and monitors made for professionals measure between 98 and 119 percent. The CFG70, however, can realize 125 percent of this range. Achieving an even and clear high-definition picture on a curved monitor was no easy feat, but we researched relentlessly in order to pull it off.

Q: What were some of your key focuses when designing the monitor’s UX?

The CFG70 includes user-friendly Gaming UX on-screen display (OSD) interface

Sung Duk Cho: Different games require different capabilities in a display. For example, First-Person Shooters (FPS) require smooth visuals for dynamic scene changes and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games (MOBAs) require clearly discernible colors so players can easily recognize their character’s location. Therefore, when we designed the CFG70’s UX, we wanted it to be able to complement a range of different games.

In order to implement the new UX, we installed a high-level graphic engine into the monitor itself. The CFG70’s default game settings were also carefully configured with the input of the Samsung Galaxy pro gaming team as well as other gamers who tested out the monitor firsthand. The result is a highly versatile UX that satisfies both hardcore and typical gamers alike.

The monitor also features ‘Arena Lighting’, which responds to in-game sound effects to bring lifelike lighting to users’ video-game experience. So in a FPS, for example, when a player fires a gun, the lighting responds accordingly. Each spark and blast bathes the player in light, drawing them deeper into the action by creating a more immersive gaming experience.

Q: What was the impetus behind the monitor’s dual-hinge design?

The dual-hinge design and the “Pivot” technology of the CFG70’s stand allows users to position their monitor to their preference.

Yoon Ah Kim: Rapid response time and high-definition visuals are of no use if users cannot comfortably concentrate on their screen. Our research indicates that many gamers find it uncomfortable when their monitor’s position is even slightly off. In fact, many hardcore gamers are sensitive to differences in screen position as small as a half an inch or less.

The engineering process was not easy, but with user convenience as our top priority we managed to achieve a design for the CFG70’s stand that features easily adjustable double joints. Resembling a robot arm, the stand allows users to comfortably adjust their monitor’s position to their preference.

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of its newest industry-leading gaming monitor. The CFG70 curved monitor, designed specifically for professional gamers, includes enhanced picture quality and player-friendly features for a truly immersive gaming experience. The display was first introduced at the Gamescom 2016 and IFA 2016 conferences.

As the industry’s first curved gaming monitor to feature quantum dot technology, the CFG70 monitor (24- and 27-inch models) expresses brilliant and accurate colors across a 125 percent sRGB spectrum. This added luminance produces a 3,000:1 contrast ratio and amplifies previously-hidden gaming details in both light and dark settings. The monitor also employs an environmentally-safe, cadmium-free design.

“With the introduction of quantum dot technology to our pioneering curved monitors, Samsung offers a look into the future of gaming, along with a level of picture quality like the industry has never seen before,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The CFG70 makes gamers feel as if they are part of the action, and represents Samsung’s most powerful and visually-compelling curved monitor to date.”

Fast Speed and Smooth Game Play

By combining Samsung’s advanced motion blur reduction technology with its VA panel, the CFG70 is the first curved monitor to produce a 1 ms moving picture response time (MPRT). The rapid MPRT rate reduces display transitions between moving and animated objects, and in turn eliminates potential visual distractions.

The CFG70 also leverages integrated AMD FreeSync Technology over HDMI functionality to synchronize the screen’s 144 Hz refresh rate with users’ AMD graphics cards. This connectivity minimizes image tearing, input latency and stutter that can disrupt gameplay and escalate visual fatigue.

Optimized Gaming Experience

Samsung has equipped the CFG70 with a range of user-friendly gaming UX that drives more convenient and easily-accessible game management. The CFG70 includes a dedicated gaming interface with an intuitive settings dashboard to better allow gamers to modify and personalize their gameplay settings. Each CFG70 monitor also offers a series of hotkeys on the front and back of the display for users to easily adjust gameplay settings.

To further inspire gamer immersion and bring out the best in even the most complex game designs, including compatibility with the FPS, RTS, RPG and AOS genres, each CFG70 monitor undergoes rigorous pre-shipment factory calibration. This process optimizes various settings, including contrast ratios, black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management. As a result, gamers can enjoy a sharp and brilliant picture regardless of the game in play.

Comfortable and Immersive Viewing with the Curved Design

The CFG70’s “Super Arena” design, featuring industry-best 1,800R curvature and a 178-degree ultra-wide viewing angle, is formatted to match the natural curve of the human eye. Complementary sound-interactive LED lighting further creates a lifelike presentation and keeps users focused during the most paramount moments.

Additionally, the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) recently named the CFG70 as a recipient of its annual Good Design Awards, which honor technologies that “improve the quality of life, industry and society.” The JDP acknowledged the efficiency and performance of the CFG70’s advanced gaming interface and convenience-driving composition.

When Samsung introduced the world’s first curved monitor in 2014, the company set a new standard, delivering a more immersive viewing experience and more natural viewing comfort.

Now, Samsung broadens its innovation in displays with the launch of its most powerful and visually compelling curved gaming monitor yet—the CF791 premium curved monitor. Bolstered color accuracy with Quantum dot technology and a refined display curvature are only just a few of the ways the CF791 is changing the game in the ever-evolving display industry.

Ultimate Viewing Comfort

With a curvature of 1,500R, the 34-inch CF791 is the most curved gaming monitor yet. Closely following the contours of the human eye, this exceptional curvature allows users to experience a more natural field of vision and a more immersive entertainment experience.

Eye-to-object distance uniformity from all angles also provides enhanced viewing comfort, while Eye Saver Mode and Flicker Free functionality work to reduce eye strain and empower comfortable long-term gameplay.

Rich and Vibrant Picture Quality

The CF791, along with the CFG70, are the first environmentally-safe, cadmium-free Quantum dot monitors on the market. By incorporating the same Quantum dot technology found in Samsung’s TV lineup, the CF791 monitor is poised to deliver a true-to-life experience for gamers and non-gamers alike.

By utilizing Quantum dot technology, the monitor displays a wide range of faithfully vibrant colors, while requiring less energy to do so. It expresses brilliant color across a 125 percent sRGB spectrum, giving greater depth to blacks and sharpening color intricacies. These color distinctions bring even the smallest details of today’s video games to life, far surpassing display offers available in conventional monitors.

Furthermore, thanks to the 3000:1 contrast ratio of the monitor’s VA panel, blacks are blacker, whites are whiter and details are sharper. And, with minimized light leakage, darker scenes are more uniform in low-light settings, increasing the nuances of gameplay.

But the CF791 is good for the home office, too, as it provides enhanced readability, even in the corners where small text or images are often cut off on other monitors. This, combined with a resolution of 3440×1440, a wider screen and a 178 degree-wide viewing angle that provides an optimal viewing experience from any direction, makes the CF791 ideal for both work and play.

Powerful Multitasking

The Ultra-Wide 21:9 aspect ratio of the CF791 makes watching movies and playing games more immersive than ever, and better preserves content quality during multi-screen competition. It also provides additional real estate for users to multitask or watch multiple contents simultaneously, eliminating the need to flip back and forth between them.

These multitasking features are enabled by the monitor’s Picture By Picture (PBP) and Picture In Picture (PIP) functionality. PBP allows two different devices, such as a laptop and computer system unit, to be connected to the monitor with original resolution. PIP, on the other hand, supports a secondary display with native resolution, which can be resized up to 25 percent of the screen, and moved into any position on the display.

Optimized Gaming Experience

Combined with a 100Hz refresh rate, as well as embedded AMD FreeSync functionality that synchronizes screen refresh rates with gamers’ AMD graphics cards, the CF791 allows users to enjoy smoother gameplay without stuttering or tearing on the monitor.

When activated, Game Mode enhances the gaming experience by adjusting the monitor to improve the darkness of the picture so players can vividly see all of the on-screen action.

Sophisticated Design, Enhanced Entertainment

Beyond its on-screen visual enhancements, the CF791 features a sleek composition that imbues just about any environment with sophistication and style.

The display’s three-sided, bound-less design allows for a seamless connection of multiple monitors, as well as the harmony between the device’s silver front and glossy white back. Furthermore, the interface has been covered and the cables hidden within the stand to form a clean rear design, so users can place it anywhere they please.

Players can also customize the monitor’s alignment to match their specific ergonomic needs through both a tilt- and height-adjustable stand.

To take its entertainment capabilities to the next level, the CF791 boasts built-in dual stereo speakers, and multiple connections—two HDMIs, a DP and two USBs.

At this year’s IFA exhibition, Samsung created a stunning work of art that captivated event attendees and showcased the innovative Quantum Dot (QD) technology powering its latest range of SUHD TVs.

Quantum Dots are nano-sized crystals that are highly efficient at absorbing and emitting light, making them perfect for implementation in displays. Samsung’s eye-catching art piece, created with the help of renowned German artists in various fields, succeeded in visualizing QD’s lasting color, high brightness, interesting history and ability to convey compelling stories.

Visitors of the exhibit were immediately immersed in QD color via three impressive media sculptures assembled from dozens of SUHD TVs, which were surrounded by brilliant “Quantum Dots” of every hue.

To bring the installation to life, Samsung first collaborated with a local media artist to visualize stories that would best portray QD’s pure, natural color. An installation artist then created a layout allowing for an optimal viewing experience of Samsung’s products. Finally, a sound artist completed the immersive atmosphere through the incorporation of carefully selected music.

The artists drew inspiration for the piece from medieval stained glass—of which QD’s effects were first observed. The depth of color showcased in the art piece is expressive of Quantum Dots’ ability to create similarly beautiful, long-lasting color and revolutionize the viewing experience.

On the right side of the exhibit, guests were invited to discover how light-emitting-material research has historically guided TV development and learn more about QD’s interesting history. At the center, interactive installations allowed them to closely examine why Quantum Dots are able to produce up to one billion shades of pure, lasting color.

One of the most popular installations examined QD’s potential to revolutionize a variety of different fields. By pointing a tablet toward designated sections of an intricate diorama of a city, guests could view augmented reality animations of QD’s possible applications in medicine, solar cells, electronic batteries and lighting.

In addition, visitors were given an up-close look at the dynamic QD displays, side-by-side with conventional TVs. This allowed them to see for themselves how, even in bright conditions or under the lights of a convention hall, Samsung’s SUHD TVs are able to display lifelike detail and natural color, yielding the highest level of picture clarity on the market today.

For filmmakers, the link between cameras and display technology is paramount. They want cameras that can capture the full vividness and richness of their scenes, and then they need to be able to replicate those images for the audience. And increasingly, Samsung’s SUHD TVs, which use Quantum Dot (QD) technology to produce unrivalled high dynamic range (HDR), are becoming the choice of cinematographers, directors and other creators.

The capabilities and richness of Samsung’s SUHD TVs were on display at the Korea International Broadcast, Audio, and Lighting Equipment Show 2016 (or KOBA 2016), held May 24-27 in Seoul.

How Samsung’s Displays Became the Choice of ARRI

The ARRI Group is a German manufacturer of motion picture film equipment, globally renowned for its reliable and high-quality products.

Roger Deakins, a famous cinematographer (left), working with an ARRI camera in the making of the James Bond thriller Skyfall. (Photo from the ARRI Group)

Carlos Chu (left), Regional Sales Manager, Northeast Asia, ARRI, said that he expects “with the increasing number of HDR video contents, consumer interest in HDR display will rise as well.”

Although ARRI produces all kinds of lighting and filming equipment, the company is most famous for its cameras. Most of the 2016 Academy Award winning movies were filmed with ARRI cameras. Notably, Emmanuel Lubezki, a famed cinematographer who works with ARRI camera in many of his films, won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for three consecutive years, for Gravity (2013), Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance in 2014), and The Revenant, 2015).

HDR-enabled Quantum Dot TVs are able to deliver life-like pictures, clearly displaying even the smallest details, like the wrinkles of a person’s skin.

And at the ARRI booth at KOBA 2016, what was the German company’s choice to best demonstrate the clarity and beauty of its cameras? They chose Samsung’s Quantum Dot Display SUHD TVs.

“The Only TV That Can Perfectly Display Our Content”

“HDR is an influential technology that may have a huge impact on our everyday lives by delivering a greatly advanced visual experience,” emphasized Kim Tae-Jung (right), Business Development Manager, ARRI Asia.

Until now, even the most skillful cinematographers often failed in their attempts to deliver life-like images due to limits in existing display technology.

“It was a chronic problem in the video industry since the available displays often failed to reveal what was filmed through high-end cameras,” said Kim Tae-Jung, Business Development Manager, ARRI Asia.

Now, however, HDR display technology is transforming the industry. With HDR, it is possible for a display to make the bright highlights brighter and the dark areas darker, maximizing visual effects by adjusting the contrasts in brightness.

“Thanks to HDR, you can now enjoy videos that look closer to what the director intended you to see,” said Kim. “The ultimate goal of HDR is to realize the same range of contrast as real life.”

“We expect to see much demand in the Korean market, which has won global recognition for its high-quality TV dramas and movies,” said Paul Ivan, Managing Director of ARRI Asia.

But to get the most out of HDR, a TV needs to have strong capabilities in color and light expression. This is where Samsung’s recently released Quantum dot SUHD TVs shine, as they are able to express a brightness of 1000 nits[1] or higher using HDR. This is exactly why ARRI choose them.

“Since quality video content is our priority, we choose the Quantum Dot SUHD TV (for our displays at the exhibit),” said Paul Ivan, Managing Director of ARRI Asia. “I am confident that the KOBA 2016 visitors must have felt the unmatched performance of the ARRI cameras through the Quantum Dot SUHD TV.”

Accuracy Makes Quantum Dot SUHD TV a Good Reference Monitor

“Quantum Dot SUHD TV made calibration smooth and fun,” said Um Tae-Sik.

For the exhibition, Um Tae-Sik, a cinematographer and colorist, demonstrated how calibration[2] works, using a Quantum Dot SUHD TV and a famous Korean TV drama, Descendants of the Sun.

“Regular and even breathing is evidence of good health. And the same applies to any video, since consistency in color and brightness is a prerequisite for high-quality video. In the past, after I finished the first draft of a calibration in a reference monitor, I had to check the results on a typical TV. However, it was different with the Quantum Dot SUHD TV I used for the demonstration: I didn’t have to use a reference monitor separately for calibration, and the result was quite satisfying.”

Um Tae-Sik performed a calibration using a scene from Descendants of the Sun. The left picture shows the “after,” while the right one shows the “before.”

All of the industry experts we talked to at KOBA 2016 agreed that Quantum Dot SUHD TV is a welcomed advancement for the video industry, providing better access to higher quality displays. It has long been a dream for filmmakers to be able to show their content in all the color and detail as real life.

Samsung’s Quantum Dot SUDH TVs are making this dream come true, offering truer to life HDR images than were ever possible before.

[1] Nit: The nit is a unit of visible-light intensity commonly used to specify brightness. One nit is equivalent to one candela per 1m3.

[2] Calibration: The task of mastering video content so that it reproduces the same results on all display devices.
