Following the expansion of One UI 8.5 beta in March,¹ the program is now rolling out to more devices, including the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold5, Galaxy Z Flip5, Galaxy S23 FE, and for the first time on the A series, Galaxy A36 5G. The beta will be available in select markets, including India, Korea, the U.K. and the U.S.,² as part of a phased rollout.

Building on our ongoing collaboration with Android, Samsung is introducing support for AirDrop through Quick Share on One UI 8.5 beta, enabling more seamless cross-platform file sharing for Galaxy users on select devices, including Galaxy S25 series, Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6.³

The beta program will continue to expand to additional Galaxy devices later this month. Users can register via the Samsung Members app.

New Functionalities Alter Kitchen Experiences

The Smart Forward updates introduce an array of new functionalities designed to enhance the user experience and appliance performance. The Family Hub, a touch screen panel installed on the 4-Door French Door Refrigerator⁴ for food management, entertainment and communication, will now come with Quick Share, Buds Auto Switch⁵ and Fridge Call, new features that significantly improve connectivity and usability.⁶

Quick Share makes sharing memories and recipes while in the kitchen easier than ever by allowing users to quickly send photos to the Family Hub screen directly from their mobile device⁷ with just a few clicks. When users have their Galaxy Buds connected to the Family Hub to listen to music or watch cooking tutorial videos, the Buds Auto Switch feature allows users to seamlessly switch to their mobile device to answer incoming calls and back when the call is finished, enabling a cooking experience free from interruptions.

Finally, users can receive phone calls with Fridge Call directly on the Family Hub using its microphone and speaker, eliminating the need to move to a different room to find their phone. This is especially convenient when users’ hands are occupied to cooking, cleaning and dishwashing, making it much easier to multitask while remaining connected. Perhaps best of all, these new features will be available on refrigerator models with Family Hub produced from 2017 onward rather than new models only.

Quick Remote,⁸ an additional feature in which a user’s mobile phone becomes a remote control for connected Samsung appliances, is being expanded across refrigerators produced since 2023, regardless of whether they include a Family Hub screen or not.⁹ Other connected appliances include washing machines and air conditioners also produced since 2023.¹⁰ All users need to do is simply move close to a SmartThings-connected appliance,¹¹ and a remote control menu for the appliance will appear on the quick panel of the Galaxy phone screen being used. This seamless integration ensures that users can control their home environment with ease.

Future-Proofing Home Appliances to the Next Level

Apart from making the user experience more seamless, Samsung is also focused on future-proofing existing appliances. The upgraded Bixby¹² will understand commands with multiple intentions and remember the most recent conversation.¹³ This advanced functionality transforms the way users interact with their appliances, making voice commands more intuitive and responsive.¹⁴ Samsung is providing the update to five products launched in 2024 first: the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub; Bespoke AI Laundry Combo; Bespoke Slide-in Range; Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI; and Bespoke AI WindFree Gallery Freestanding Air Conditioner (Sold in Korea only).

Additionally, Bixby now opens doors for 2024 refrigerators with Family Hub upon verbal request, without the need for wake-up commands like “Hi Bixby.” Users can simply say, “Open the refrigerator door.” This functionality offers users an unparalleled level of convenience and hands-free operation.¹⁵ Plus, for refrigerators with Family Hub launched in Korea and the U.S. after 2022, a new wallpaper feature will allow users to create custom wallpapers for the fridge’s screen, adding a personalized touch to their kitchen space.¹⁶

Safer Use and Lower Energy Consumption

In terms of safety and energy-savings, Samsung is rolling out updates to older models — including refrigerators made as far back as 2021 — because the importance of safety does not diminish with time.¹⁷ After an event of a power outage and once resumed with power, refrigerators will detect and notify users via the SmartThings app when internal temperature is high, providing an extra layer of food safety by making users aware of potential issues that could affect the freshness of their stored food.

Additionally, users can now choose different chimes for open door notifications, giving them greater control over their appliance settings. Furthermore, users can maintain a peaceful home environment by putting ice makers in sleep mode, preventing them from working during the night and creating the disruptive sound of ice falling into the tray while users sleep.

Optimal Scheduling, which delays the start of appliances to not have them run during peak energy usage hours or periods of high carbon intensity, will also be added to the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo¹⁸ and Samsung Dishwashers.¹⁹ This feature can help users cut down on energy cost. Additionally, the 7-inch AI Home on the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo now automatically switches to power-save mode during wash cycles, further contributing to smart energy savings.²⁰

These updates reflect Samsung’s broader strategy of providing value to customers by enhancing the products they already own. By continuously improving the functionality and performance of its appliances, Samsung ensures that users do not have to worry about their devices becoming obsolete. This approach not only safeguards customers’ investments but also aligns with the company’s efforts to reduce the need for frequent replacements.

Samsung’s updated home appliances will be showcased at IFA 2024 in Berlin, Germany, from September 6 to 10, where visitors will be able to see and experience each feature.

Private Sharing With Quick Share

Ever been in a situation like this? You want to share pictures of your newborn baby or a video from your recent holiday, but don’t want to risk them somehow ending up online or visible to anyone other than those you intended.

Samsung Galaxy has a built-in solution to this problem: Quick Share’s Private Sharing, a privacy-preserving file-sharing function that lets you share your data with peace of mind.

With Private Sharing, you and you alone own the data. You can ensure that only the designated recipients can open the files you send — no one else. You can also set permissions and expiration dates for the data, so it’s only viewable for a limited amount of time. Furthermore, you can give read-only access without the ability to re-share, revoke the data access whenever you like, restrict screenshotting and see when the recipient received and opened the file.

Private Sharing makes it safe and easy to share your content, and you can share up to 20 files at once with a total size of up to 200MB.¹ And of course, all your files are securely and fully encrypted when shared, courtesy of blockchain-based encryption technology.

To use Private Sharing, select the file you want to send and tap the Share icon. Tap Quick Share, followed by the three dots for more options in the top right corner. Then select Turn on Private Sharing. Once the message has been sent, you can check what you’ve sent and change the expiration date or revoke sharing permissions.

Enhanced Data Protection With End-to-End Encryption

Here’s a moment that would make anyone panic. You receive a notification that something’s gone wrong with a website you visited, and the server where your sensitive account details are stored has been compromised.

No one wants their data leaked. But with Galaxy’s Enhanced Data Protection, you can be confident that your data remains secure in the Samsung Cloud.

Starting with the Galaxy S24, Enhanced Data Protection offers additional protection for Galaxy devices when you sync or back up your data with Samsung Cloud.² This feature mitigates data loss via end-to-end encryption (E2EE), which ensures data can only be encrypted or decrypted on your device and cannot be seen by anyone but you. In other words, you can connect to other devices while staying secure, and your data will be kept safe even if a server is compromised or account details are stolen.

When you activate Enhanced Data Protection, you’ll be prompted to write down a recovery code to help prevent the loss of your data in the event you lose your device.

To use Enhanced Data Protection, open the Samsung Cloud app, tap the three dots for more options, choose Settings and then Enhanced Data Protection. From here, you can choose to encrypt backup or synced data. Alternatively, you can open your device Settings and go to Security and Privacy to find this feature.

In a flight attendant-like announcement, Galaxy’s new video spotlighting the ease of switching over to a new Galaxy smartphone from another operating system announces that apps and data from your former smartphone have moved fast and comfortably made it to their new device. The icons are impressed with their new home, taking a leisurely look around while checking out their new appearance.

Shot from the perspective of smartphone icons, this amusing video was released on Samsung Electronics’ YouTube channel in April as part of the “Samsung Galaxy: All About Switching” campaign. It shows off leading Galaxy features for consumers who may be hesitant to make the switch. In more than two weeks since its release, the clip went viral — reaching 21.2 million views and receiving more than 72,000 likes and 5,400 comments.

Can I Safely Switch to Galaxy? Answering the Real Concerns of Consumers

Research shows that concerns about the device switching process are a phenomenon shared by many. From questions about the complexity of the switching process to platform compatibility with existing peripherals, to worries over whether photos and other data can be safely transferred without loss, switching fears are common.

In “All About Switching,” the icons mirror consumers’ initial concerns, becoming lost in confusion upon hearing that they’ll be moving to a new home. Comical conversations ensue between the personified icons to help ease consumers’ potential worries.

Here to reassure both concerned icons and consumers alike is the Galaxy Smart Switch app. The switch to Galaxy is over in a flash, complemented by the lively and dynamic icons. Even without facial features, their expressions and detailed animation effects help bring each icon to life. In fact, 3D animation was used to enhance the subtle expressions of the Samsung Knox icon to mimic the subtle movements of a mouth and eyebrows.

From Smart Switch to One UI: Spotlighting the Unique Galaxy Experience

Through the “All About Switching” video, Samsung is not only showing how easy it is to make the switch to Galaxy but also introducing the unique features and benefits of Galaxy. The video is divided into several chapters including Smart Switch, SmartThings service, Samsung Knox security, Quick Share and One UI. The icon of each feature pops up during the corresponding chapter to introduce what it does while addressing any situations consumers may encounter.

Galaxy fans worldwide have reacted to “All About Switching,” posting comments on the Samsung Electronics’ YouTube video that are just as funny as the video itself. As some viewers said: “I will never look at my icons the same after seeing this,” “We need season 2,” and more. A viewer who identified themselves as a different smartphone user left a long comment that echoed the reactions of many others: “This was so tasteful and informative and can def [sic] help others see how easy it can be to switch over [to Galaxy].”

1. Share Original Image Files Without Losing Quality

The biggest advantage of Quick Share is that users can quickly share photos with nearby Galaxy devices in just a few taps regardless of the number and size of the files. With a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, users can send files to up to eight people at a time.¹

Receiving files through Quick Share is simple, from set up to sending and receiving. In order to use Quick Share, swipe down from the top of the screen of your Galaxy device and tap on the Quick Share icon from Quick Settings.

For those looking to try out Quick Share, here is how to use the feature in just a few easy steps:

① Select the file to share → click Quick Share

Select a picture or video in the Gallery app or a file in a folder, and then click the Share icon. After pressing the Quick Share icon in the pop-up window, available Galaxy devices that can accept shared files appear.

Galaxy devices that can accept files are listed according to sharing preferences that the user has set in advance. When the other Galaxy device accepts the file transfer, the file is sent immediately. 2. Share Quickly and Seamlessly With Non-Galaxy Devices

What’s more, Quick Share makes file sharing easy not only between Galaxy devices but also with other smartphones.

When using Quick Share with non-Galaxy users, a Galaxy user can select the file they want to share via Quick Share and choose from the following options: Copy link, Share in an app and Share using QR code. If the user chooses to share the file using a QR code, the recipient can simply copy or scan the code and receive the file instantly on their smartphone or device. Additionally, files uploaded to the Samsung Cloud can be shared with others as well.

If Share in an app is selected, the link can be sent via a messenger right away, making it an effective way to share files to multiple people at once in a group chatroom. Additionally, users can send original photos and videos in high quality without worrying about deteriorated image quality due to file compression.

It is also worth noting that files uploaded to Samsung Cloud are automatically deleted after a certain period, improving security and user convenience.

Unlike Quick Share, which uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, Private Share supports file encryption by utilizing blockchain. Users can send a variety of files through Private Share, including images, video, audio and documents. Twenty files of up to 200MB in total can be sent at once to a designated recipient using a phone number and identification number.

The most notable feature of Private Share is that users can control the recipient’s access permission and the file’s expiration date. When the user’s phone is within range, it will appear in the Wi-Fi network list on your Galaxy Book3 series. As there’s no need to remember and type passwords or search for hotspot settings on your phone, Galaxy users are able connect to hotspots easily and quickly.

What you need from your device can change throughout the day. The features you utilize for your morning routine to get you up and active might not be the same as what keeps you focused during the working day. With the Routines, you can trigger a sequence of actions on your device based on your activities, and with One UI 5’s Modes, you can create customized settings for different parts of your life from sleeping and relaxing to exercising and driving.

For example, while you’re exercising, your priority might be to mute notifications in order to stay in the zone and play music. Alternatively, when it’s time for bed, turning off sounds and turning on Dark mode can help you wind down.

You also now get easy access to the Auto switch Buds menu, which lets you automatically switch your Buds from one device to another for more seamless inter-device operation.

Convenient Security and Peace of Mind

Samsung understands that there is no privacy without security, so in One UI 5, these two settings have been brought together in one clear, easy-to-navigate dashboard, making it easier than ever for you to keep your device protected and your sensitive information private.

This new Security and privacy dashboard has been designed to be as simple as possible to make quick and easy to understand your device’s status. With one quick glance, you can get a quick overview of your device’s security and find suggestions and warnings depending on the status.

To make sure your private information stays private, One UI 5 also features a new notification on the Share Panel² that warns you if you’re about to unwittingly share a photo that contains potentially sensitive information such as an image of your credit or debit card, driver’s license, Social Security card or passport.

The One UI Beta Program ensures that Samsung delivers mobile experiences that truly meet the needs of Galaxy users. Through this program, participants can get early access to the interface and share their feedback to help create the best experience possible. This year saw Samsung open up its Open Beta program for One UI 5 earlier than ever before to ensure everyone had access to the exciting new user interface as soon as possible.

Before you get started, make sure you have the latest Quick Share app¹ installed on your Galaxy device. Once installed, open the app on the Galaxy Book2 Pro series and drag and drop the files you want to share. The Quick Share app automatically converts unsupported files into a format your friends can easily view, so you don’t have to worry about files not opening. When you’re ready to share, scan through a list of people nearby. Once you’ve selected your recipients, hit send. Quick Share will alert the recipient that you shared the files and let them download the files with just a tap.

Want to share files with people who are using non-Galaxy devices? Quick Share can also generate a QR code with a link² where even non-Galaxy users can access your shared files.

Share With Peace of Mind at Work and School

For times when you need to share sensitive files³ like work reports or school assignments, Private Share on the Galaxy Book2 Pro series provides advanced security based on blockchain technology.

Your data belongs to you, and Private Share helps keep it that way by encrypting your files and setting strict permissions on who can view or re-share them. Private Share lets you share 20 files, totaling 100MB, with five people at a time. Send text files, photos, videos and even PDFs all with peace of mind.

To get started, open the Private Share app and carefully look over the required permissions before choosing the files you want to share. Once you’ve chosen the files, you can decide who gets access, what they can do with your files, and how long they can access them for. You can even revoke access to the files after you’ve shared them if you change your mind or decide the person no longer needs access. Private Share will then encrypt your files before you send them, so you don’t have to worry about third parties gaining access. Advanced security measures in Private Share also protect your files from being saved, screen captured or re-shared by the recipient.

As the sender, you can keep track of when your files were opened, how many days are left for access, and their expiration date.

Samsung has released a new software update bringing a range of leading Galaxy S20 features to the Galaxy A series. Galaxy A51 and A71 device users will now be able to harness some of the Galaxy S20 series’ powerful innovations, designed to make the way we capture, connect and share more dynamic than ever before.

Change the Way You Capture

The Galaxy S20 has a camera packed with innovative features for a more professional shooting experience. Galaxy A51 and A71 users can now capture their memories exactly as they happen with such leading S20 features as Single Take.

Single Take takes the burden of choosing a camera mode out of your hands by recording with several camera modes simultaneously. Just by tapping record with the Single Take feature, users can capture up to ten seconds of footage with a wide range of capture modes, including Boomerang, Smart Crop, video and AI filter. Users can then revisit the clips in the Gallery app and choose which capture style they like the best.

Galaxy A51 and A71 users can now also enjoy several Pro Mode functionalities from the Galaxy S20, including Manual Focus and Shutter Speed control. These features give users more control when capturing photos and videos so they can have total command over their shooting experiences.

Users can get creative when capturing after sunset with Night Hyperlapse, and enjoy more personalization with features like My Filters, which lets users create their own personal image filters using existing images in their camera roll.

Share Seamlessly 

The software update brings with it two convenient ways – available originally on the Galaxy S20 series – for users to share media with each other. Quick Share and Music Share make it easier than ever before to stay connected and instantaneously share pictures, videos and music.

When viewing media in the Gallery and looking to share it with friends, users can now harness the Quick Share option to see immediately which users are nearby. Just by tapping the icon, users can then select one or more friends to seamlessly share their media with.

Music Share lets friends connect to a user’s Bluetooth speaker directly via the user’s smartphone. By swiping down on the Quick Panel and tapping on the Music Share icon, users can easily activate or deactivate this innovative feature to instantly enjoy good music with their friends. Users can also head to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > Advanced to toggle Music Share on or off.

Let Your Device Do the Work

Galaxy A51 and A71 users are already able to do more of what they love with their smartphones, but this update brings even more Keyboard and Gallery functionalities to users that are designed to make their day-to-day interactions with their smartphones as convenient as possible.

When typing in the search bar in the app tray, accessible with just a simple swipe up on the home screen, users will now be presented with a range of predicted Apps, Settings, Quick Panel and Contacts search results before they even finish typing their query, and can then explore even more results by hitting the ‘See more results’ button. Enhanced keyboard functionalities also give users more freedom when typing; users can now translate text directly from the keyboard tray and easily undo and redo their most recent keyboard action with an intuitive swipe left or right with two fingers on the keyboard.

With the Clean View feature, the Gallery will group up to 100 images shot consecutively into one bundle for easy viewing – users can choose their favorite to serve as the group’s thumbnail – and an organized Gallery. Quick Crop lets users trim their photos right from the media viewing screen. When zooming in on an image with two fingers, the icon will appear on the left hand side of the screen for users to instantly save the edited picture to their Gallery.

Updates such as these, bringing flagship features to Galaxy A devices, are part of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to provide all users with the the best smartphone experiences. ­Furthermore, for the most seamless video experience possible, you can switch between the front and rear cameras whilst recording a 4K UHD video – meaning you’ll never miss a chance to capture your priceless moments from every angle. Whilst recording a video, select the ‘camera switch’ icon on the bottom right of the screen to change between the front and rear cameras.

View Easily

With the Clean View feature, the Gallery app can group up to 100 consecutive images into one bundle based on when they have been shot for easy viewing. You can then easily review each bundle and select your favorite picture to serve as the group’s thumbnail.

The Gallery also offers enhanced search capabilities. Compared to the previous iteration, the improved search now shows a more diverse array of results when you search by time or place keywords. If your search term results in nothing to display, your S20 will suggest similar search terms to help you find what you are looking for, with greater ease.

Edit & Share Quickly

Highlight reel creates a dynamic video clip out of your favorite photos and videos. You can either simply enjoy this curated selection of your best snaps or further personalize your reel by amending the duration, adding text, changing the background volume or music and more.

To help you swiftly share high-resolution photos and videos with your friends, Samsung has provided users with Quick Share. It allows you to easily see which users are nearby so that you can select and share high-resolution pictures and videos with multiple people – just by tapping on the icon¹.
