Samsung Medison is garnering attention from the global medical community with its ultrasound diagnostic solutions across the women’s life stage from fetal stage to menopause.

At the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG 2025) in Cancún, Mexico on September 14, Samsung Medison will showcase its comprehensive women’s health solution under the theme “From Challenges to Solutions: Experience the Innovation.”

From Fetal Stage to Menopause Ultrasound Solution Demonstration Tailored to Women’s Life Stages

The highlight of upgraded HERA Z20, to be unveiled at ISUOG, features diagnostics tailored to every life stage of women. It supports healthcare professionals in managing women’s health comprehensively with a single equipment, enabling dedicated management of women’s health across all stages, from adolescent gynecological conditions and fertility to maternity and aging.

Newly added PelvicAssist and three types of reporting features propose diagnostic support innovation for the women and healthcare professionals whom have difficulties due to the gynecological conditions. PelvicAssist automatically analyzes multiple pelvic regions and measures the levator hiatus area, providing the 3D image.

Due to the complexity of anatomical structures, considerable time is required to precisely assess and report lesion location, size, shape and degree of invasion. In response, Samsung Medison has unveiled tailored diagnostic reporting solution based on standardized clinical guidelines.

Fibroid 2D, which simplifies the reporting procedure for uterine fibroid by applying The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) guideline. IDEA and IETA highly enhanced diagnostic workflow efficiency by supporting scan procedures and reporting based on guidelines for endometriosis and endometrial tumor evaluation, respectively.

The ultra-compact probe Mini ER7, developed to minimize patient discomfort during gynecological examinations by offering 63% smaller head compared to conventional probes, it is expected to significantly reduce the burden for adolescent and elderly patients.

Ultrasound Solutions for High-risk Pregnancy Care and Enhanced Clinical Efficiency

With maternal age on the rise, high-risk pregnancies are becoming common. In response to this social challenge, Samsung Medison has integrated Ophthalmic Artery feature to detect systemic vasoconstriction in early stages — a key factor of pre-eclampsia.

As the Ophthalmic Artery branches directly from the internal carotid artery, it allows for indirect monitoring of cerebral blood flow, which is difficult to access, enabling the early detection of potential cardiovascular disease. The expanded HeartAssist further supports maternal health by real-time monitoring of cardiovascular conditions during pregnancy.

Healthcare professional’s work efficiency is at the center of Samsung Medison’s innovation. Live ViewAssist automatically extracts up to 39 ultrasound cross-sectional images, provides automated annotations and measurement results for key parameters throughout the pregnancy cycle, and reduce diagnostic time.

The integrated QualityCheck feature automatically evaluates the quality of extracted images during fetal diagnosis, supporting consistency of diagnostic accuracy.

Jihyun Kim, Head of the CX group at Samsung Medison said: “The Upgraded HERA 20 is more than just an equipment enhancement but it’s a total solution designed to support women’s health across all life stages. By combining AI technology with the healthcare professional’s clinical experience, we aim to enhance diagnostic accuracy and reduce burdens, ultimately driving meaningful change in the healthcare field.”

Samsung Electronics Health and Medical Equipment Business and Samsung Medison participated in the 2024 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) conference in Chicago, United States, from December 1st to 5th (local time) and unveiling an even more diverse product lineup.

To strengthen its competitiveness across medical specialties, after the launch of a new OB & GYN ultrasound diagnostic system, HERA Z20, Samsung proposed ‘pediatric integrated solution’ encompassing the entire range of its medical diagnostic devices through this RSNA.

In the ‘Ultrasound Zone,’ a dedicated probe for the pediatric cardiac diagnosis ‘TA2-9’ was unveiled for the first time at this exhibition. The TA2-9 with 42% smaller head than adult echocardiography probe aids in more accurate diagnosis for congenital heart disease or functional and structural abnormalities of heart through the oral route. Also on display was ‘L3-22’, a dedicated neonatal probe featuring a smaller head compared to an adult version offering a wide frequency range which enables pediatric body scan with a single device without the need to switch probes.

All US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) cleared products of Samsung digital X-ray have ‘low dose’ capability making it more appropriate for diagnosis of children and adolescents where safety is particularly prioritized. Samsung’s proprietary S-Vue imaging engine reduces radiation exposure by up to 50% compared to systems without this technology.

At this exhibition, Samsung launched a new ‘floor-mounted’ digital X-ray, GF 85. The new digital X-ray, GF 85 launched by Samsung is relatively affordable compared to ceiling-mounted type and cost-effective with the ability to be installed in a small space without ceiling construction. Moreover, it provides clear image quality even with low dose and is equipped with advanced AI diagnostic assistance feature, fully inheriting all the advantages of previous digital X-ray models.

NeuroLogica Corp, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, includes the OmniTom Elite mobile computed tomography (CT) in its portfolio, useful for imaging pediatric patients and at point-of-care, facilitating rapid clinical decision making and reducing transport related risks. Mobile CT is already recognized for its utility, with 8 out of the top 10 U.S. pediatric hospitals (as ranked by U.S. News for 2024-2025) utilizing the technology.

NeuroLogica’s OmniTom Elite with photon counting detector (PCD) technology showcased this year’s at RSNA delivers ultra high-resolution CT imaging at the point-of-care using FDA 510(k) cleared PCD technology, surpassing conventional CT methods that rely on energy integrating detectors. By utilizing photon counting detectors to measure the energy of each individual photon, this cutting-edge technology enhances contrast differentiation and virtual monoenergetic imaging, empowering radiologists with greater confidence in diagnosing patients.

Samsung provides opportunity to gain clinical application tips of Samsung medical devices and engage in Q&A with the global experts through Lunch & Learn session. In this session, a global breast imaging expert, Dr. Nina Vincoff shared a screening program using Samsung breast ultrasound solution and the latest insights on the FDA’s mandate for breast density information provision and implementation of additional imaging examination recommendation for dense breast (effective on September 10, 2024).

Dr. Farhad Farzanegan in Kasier Permanente South Sacramento health system U.S. presented a case study on hospital workflow improvement based on the result of CT intervention procedure using Samsung mobile full-body CT, BodyTom.

In the booth, Dr. Jon Jacobson, a musculoskeletal radiology expert, conducted live scan using a premium ultrasound diagnostic device, RS85 Prestige introducing clearer image quality and more sophisticated AI diagnostic assistance feature.

The leader of the Samsung Medison AI&Informatics group, Vijay, said “I discovered a greater potential through high praises from medical professors around the world who visited the site” and “Moving forward, we aim to further enhance our AI diagnostic support features tailored to specialized medical fields, solidify our technological leadership in radiology and obstetrics, and expand our competitiveness across all medical disciplines to pioneer new markets.”

It enables users to measure fetal growth parameters with one click while maintaining exam consistency.

Digital Radiography

Samsung is also showcasing its premium digital mobile X-ray, the AccE GM85, which delivers unparalleled performance and gives users better diagnostic confidence while improving workflow. Recently, Samsung received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Auto Lung Nodule Detection (ALND) tool, which can be utilized in the AccE GC85A and in other systems. The ALND is provided as an on-device computer-assisted detection (CADe) software that uses an AI algorithm to detect pulmonary nodules between 10 and 30mm in size.1

The benefits of ALND include:

Aids the user in the diagnostic process by indicating the location of suspected lung nodules on chest X-ray images (posteroanterior chest radiographs).

Offers the option (Autorun) to automatically perform nodule detection immediately after chest X-ray imaging in addition to PACS transmission options to suit the hospital environment, both of which simplify the user’s workflow.

The ALND has been clinically verified by multiple university hospitals and has been approved with a sensitivity of 80% or more.2 As part of Samsung’s commitment to advancing diagnostic radiology using AI, Samsung will expand the uses of the chest CADe solution and continue improving diagnostic accuracy and workflow.

Computed Tomography

Also featured at RSNA is the OmniTom® Elite – a mobile computed tomography (CT) scanner that delivers high-quality non-contrast CT, CT angiography and CT perfusion scans at point-of-care. The OmniTom Elite CT boasts a small footprint and high-resolution image quality. The advancements of the scanner help to optimize diagnostic confidence, speed and workflow across departments, such as neurosurgery, pediatric imaging, critical care, diagnostic radiology and more.

Earlier this year, NeuroLogica announced that the OmniTom Elite with Photon Counting Detector (PCD) technology will be piloted by Massachusetts General Hospital, bringing CT imaging to the patient’s point-of-care. Pending FDA 510(k) clearance, the hospital is testing the OmniTom Elite with PCD to monitor post-trauma and post-surgical patients.

The OmniTom Elite’s ability to provide versatile, real-time mobile imaging enables healthcare providers to administer point-of-care CT to critical patients without the need to transport them to a separate department. The mobile unit will decrease the time it takes to diagnose and initiate treatment for patients in the ICU. During the pilot stage for the OmniTom Elite with PCD, Massachusetts General Hospital will guide best practices and evaluate use cases for the novel system.

Samsung Electronics, a leader in medical imaging technology, is showcasing its latest Ultrasound, Digital Radiography, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) concept and their software innovations at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2018 Annual Meeting at McCormick Place in Chicago.

“We are pleased that Samsung’s AI technologies have been successfully applied to the existing diagnostic imaging devices and have been well received in the market,” said Dongsoo Jun, President of Health & Medical Equipment Business at Samsung Electronics and CEO of Samsung Medison. “As a comprehensive diagnostic imaging solution provider, we will continue to strengthen our technologies through collaboration with hospitals and healthcare professionals. We aim to bring together radiologists and AI to fill in the gaps for improved healthcare management.”

Samsung showcases several types of AI based diagnostic imaging software:

Ultrasound System – S-Detect for Breast is AI based software which analyzes breast lesions using ultrasound images, and has been implemented into Samsung’s ultrasound systems dedicated to Radiology. It assists in standardizing reports and classification of suspicious breast lesions by incorporating BIRADS® ATLAS* (Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System, Atlas)

According to a recently published study1 by radiology professor Tommaso Bartolotta from the University of Palermo in Italy, S-Detect for Breast has shown to assist various degrees of improvement in the overall diagnosis of breast lesions. When using S-Detect for Breast, the diagnostic accuracy for doctors with experience of four years or less improved from 0.83 to 0.87 (AUC, Area Under Curve). S-Detect for Breast could be a useful tool for supporting and guiding breast diagnosis among non-expert breast imaging physicians (Only shape and orientation descriptors are automatically classified in the United States).

Digital Radiography – By using AI technology, the ‘Bone Suppression’ function, which reduces the bone signal from the chest x-ray image, clearly brings out the lung tissues obscured by the bones. ‘SimGrid’ has also been introduced as a solution to ease the workflow to replace grids, while providing excellent image quality with reduced scatter artifacts. According to a recently published study2, ‘SimGrid’ provided image quality almost as good as the images taken with a physical grid.

The Auto Lung Nodule Detection (ALND) is a CAD (Computer Aided Detection) solution based on AI technology used in the detection of lung nodules and is 510(k) pending. According to a recent study3in press in Journal of Thoracic Imaging, ALND improved the detection sensitivity of lung cancer nodules 3 cm or smaller in chest radiographs by seven percentage points to 92 percent, compared with the average of six chest radiologists.

Computed Tomography – Samsung has introduced the intra-cranial hemorrhage package that combines a mobile stroke unit with a radiological computer aided triage and notification solution based on AI technology.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging – Utilizing AI technology, Samsung is developing a technology to display information such as knee cartilage thickness as well as images of knee arthritis patients. The software is a prototype and not for sale in any region of the world.

At the Samsung booth, attendees will find a separate ‘AI zone’ that allows visitors to experience Samsung’s AI technology more easily. Samsung will also host a symposium that will demonstrate how its image processing technology improves diagnostic accuracy and promote radiation safety for pediatric patients.

Through the release of new diagnostic tools that utilize diverse data based on AI technology, Samsung will continue to support healthcare professionals to improve the diagnostic accuracy.

An image that shows the capability of Samsung’s ultrasound technology has taken to the mainstage of one of the leading academic journals by gracing its cover as Picture of the Month for October. The clinical fetal echocardiography image is being featured by Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology (UOG), a title which specializes in women’s healthcare.

UOG is the official journal published by the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG). The image that the publication selected represents a breakthrough for Samsung Medison, a global medical equipment company and an affiliate of Samsung Electronics. Its fetal echocardiography technology called 5D Heart Color allows a precise diagnosis of congenital heart disease.

The clinical image was obtained from a 26-week fetus with hypoplastic left heart and coarctation of the aorta, in which nine standard fetal echocardiography views with automatic labeling were displayed on a single screen.

The story behind the image can be found in a research paper led by Prof. Roberto Romero, Chief of the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)/National Institutes of Health in the U.S., and Prof. Lami Yeo, M.D., from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, U.S.

According to the research, the Picture of the Month illustrates how the cardiac diagnostic planes shown by 5D Heart Color (i.e. color Doppler FINE – Fetal Intelligent Navigation Echocardiography) allowed a precise diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart with coarctation of the aorta, and that such planes demonstrated evidence of abnormal fetal cardiac anatomy and hemodynamic flow.

The publication stated, “The characteristic features of this congenital heart defect were visualized in the seven echocardiography views. In the four-chamber view, the left side of the heart was severely hypoplastic with absent flow through the atretic mitral valve, and the aortic arch view showed a very narrow transverse aortic arch (coarctation) with reversed color Doppler flow in this area and the isthmus.”

Samsung’s 5D Heart Color provides nine different fetal echocardiography views containing clinically useful information about cardiac structure and function, including the three vessels and trachea view, four-chamber view, left and right ventricular outflow tract views, aortic arch view, and four others. In cases of congenital heart disease, since abnormal fetal cardiac anatomy and hemodynamic flow characteristics are depicted, this enhances the diagnostic potential of the technology. In addition, there is reduced operator dependency, and examination of the fetal heart is standardized and simplified.

As 5D Heart Color marks the second time Samsung Medison’s technology has been selected as Picture of the Month, (The company’s Crystal Vue also gained the honor in 2016) it’s an illustration of how Samsung Medison is continuing to establish its brand power in the global women’s health industry by providing technology with clinical value to medical professionals.

“It is exciting to see 5D Heart Color is being featured on the front cover of UOG, especially since the diagnostic accuracy of 5D Heart was presented at last month’s World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology,” said Insuk Song, Vice President of the Health & Medical Equipment of Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to focus on developing medical technology that can improve the detection of fetal congenital heart disease and contribute to saving more lives.”

Samsung Medison, a global medical equipment company and an affiliate of Samsung Electronics, showcases a total diagnostic solution for women and new features at the 26th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, being held in Rome, Italy from September 25 to 28. Samsung will also be hosting an extensive program of seminars and live sessions on topics including the classification of ovarian tumors and fetal-maternal diagnostics.

“At this congress, Samsung is introducing a comprehensive diagnostic solution for women from family-planning to cancer screening, helping accurate diagnosis for health issues that women may experience throughout their lifetime,” said Dongsoo Jun, President of Health & Medical Equipment Business of Samsung Electronics and CEO of Samsung Medison. “Samsung is committed to creating solutions that provide clinicians with better imaging and help them make better management decisions for their patients. We see our collaboration with the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology as integral to this.”

The key highlights at the congress include:

Total Solution for Women’s Health

Crystal Clear — Defining women’s lifetime diagnostic challenges into four repetitive categories from family-planning, healthy pregnancy, healthy birth to Gynecology & breast health, Crystal Clear is Samsung’s comprehensive ultrasound imaging solution that provides continuous diagnostic tools designed for each stage. With one Samsung ultrasound system, clinicians can provide proper diagnosis to any Obstetrics and Gynecology patients.

Combining Intelligence and Imaging by Incorporating Decision Support Tool

IOTA-ADNEX — In collaboration with the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) group, Samsung has incorporated the ADNEX (Assessment of Different NEoplasias in the adneXa) decision support tool for the classification of ovarian tumors into the ultrasound system. The ADNEX model not only accurately classifies ovarian masses as benign or malignant, but also sub-classifies malignancies giving the opportunity for more nuanced management decisions. Once the straightforward ultrasound variables have been entered into the model, ADNEX automatically gives a graphical representation of the risks of ovarian cancer to the clinician, enabling instant feedback to the patient.

At the Samsung IOTA Symposium on the 25th, Prof. Tom Bourne, from Imperial College London and a member of the steering committee of the IOTA group said, “The ADNEX model is based on data from over 5,900 women from 24 centers in ten different countries. It is a decision support tool that has both a high sensitivity and specificity for ovarian cancer, but can also sub-classify malignancies to help personalize management for patients. Integrating the model into the ultrasound machine makes it easy to use and in effect builds intelligence into the machine.”

Advanced Visualization of Fetus Anatomy

Crystal Vue Flow — Samsung also introduced new Crystal Vue Flow, by adopting Crystal Vue which is an advanced 3D volume rendering technology and featured on the front cover of the Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology (UOG) journal in March 2016. In addition to innovative volume rendering technology, it now adds flow information that shows vascular structures with increased depth perception and demonstrates vessels in different imaging planes.

Prof. Christoph Lees, visiting Professor at KU Leuven, Belgium and Reader in Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine at Imperial College in the U.K., said, “For visualization of fetus, evaluation of fetal face and CNS, we found that Crystal Vue may provide more anatomical information the conventional 2D or 3D ultrasound can give imaging comparable to MRI,” adding, “Crystal Vue Flow combines morphological information with hemodynamic flow, and allows a deeper understanding of fetal vascular anatomical variants and neighboring vessels, particularly valuable in our experience for morbidly adherent placenta.”

With a complete package of women’s health diagnostic tools including IOTA-ADNEX and Crystal Vue Flow, Samsung will launch the WS80A with Elite containing these features from later this year.

Samsung Medison, a global medical equipment company and an affiliate of Samsung Electronics, announced that its latest imaging technology ‘Crystal Vue’ has been featured on the front cover of Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology (UOG), a renowned academic journal in the women’s healthcare industry and the official journal published by the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG).

The March edition of the UOG featured a clinical case study by Dr. Christoph Lees, professor at the Department of Surgery & Cancer within the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College in London. Using Samsung’s premium diagnostic ultrasound system WS80A, professor Lees introduced two cases of prenatal imaging through Crystal Vue, of which the rib & vertebral images were selected as the Picture of the Month by UOG.

“Our experience with Crystal Vue over the past few months, specifically imaging of the bone and soft tissue interface, leads us to believe that it may offer new opportunities for prenatal imaging, particularly for the skeletal system, but also in facial and brain imaging,” Professor Lees stated in his study. “We were able to obtain highly detailed images that give particular information on the contour of the ribs and allow inference on mineralization.”

Crystal Vue is an advanced 3D volume rendering technology that enables users to assess detailed information of internal and external structures of the fetus or uterus and helps easily differentiate between the soft tissue and bone. With the additional morphological information, users may deepen their understanding of the patients and fetus.

Crystal Vue was first introduced at the 25th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, held in Canada in October 2015, as the latest imaging function of the WS80A. The WS80A with Crystal Vue is currently available globally.

“We are thrilled that Samsung’s latest technology was recognized in a leading academic journal as a new diagnostic imaging that can provide more clinical values in women’s health,” said Dongsoo Jun, President of Health & Medical Equipment Business at Samsung Electronics and CEO of Samsung Medison. “With Samsung’s leading display and software technology, we will continue to develop new features that can increase diagnosis confidence and contribute to women and fetal health.”
