Samsung Electronics today announced its showcase of a model home with a Smart Home Energy Management System (SHEMS), supported by SmartThings Energy, in Brobyholm, a smart and energy efficient residential community development near Stockholm, Sweden.

Samsung takes a part in this project with a smart homes innovator ABB, solar technology company SMA and a real estate company S. Property. Samsung will not only supply its appliances in Brobyholm residents, but also provide its unique solution, SmartThings Energy for users to control their energy use in consolidated way.

“We are excited to present this smart community to the public,” said Chan Woo Park, Executive Vice President and Head of the Service Biz Group of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “Our goal is to create seamless connectivity that helps consumers easily manage their homes and save energy at the same time.”

Samsung will supply its appliances — including refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, washers and dryers — that will all sync to SmartThings Energy to control, monitor and save energy. Together with photovoltaics (PV) energy production & energy storage system (ESS) which is currently under development by real estate company S. Property Group, each home will aim to maximize energy efficiency.

Furthermore, building on its partnership with ABB in 2022, Samsung will integrate SmartThings Energy with ABB’s automation solution, ABB-free@home®. As a result, homes in Brobyholm will be capable of connecting appliances and devices to a centralized system that automatically saves energy, time and cost. And with just a few simple clicks on the SmartThings mobile application, homeowners will have access and control over the energy consumption within their homes.

The smart home opened as a model home for visitors and future residents of Brobyholm starting on November 9. Upon completion of the first 500 homes in 2025, more smart and energy efficient homes are expected to fill up the development. S. Property Group plans to expand them at Brobyholm by up to 2000 homes by 2028.

Samsung has worked to develop Net Zero environments and the effort was recently showcased as an interactive experience at IFA 2023. Moving forward, Samsung plans to create additional turnkey smart home solutions with the goal of applying and expanding them in countries around the world.

Our homes are where our daily lives take place. In a home, we prepare meals, relax and unwind, take care of our pets and family and create memories. Now, thanks to innovations in technology, consumers can transform a house into a connected space that adapts to and enhances their unique lifestyles. At a time when turning a house into a home is more valued than ever, Samsung Electronics’ SmartThings Home Life provides an all-in-one service to help users live easier and more comfortable everyday lives.

A Connected Home System

SmartThings Home Life delivers smarter and more seamless experiences across various home appliances, such as TVs, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners, by connecting them in a single platform. Simply by talking to Bixby, users can operate all of their home appliances in a way that’s easier than ever before. For instance, automating your everyday tasks is quick and convenient in the SmartThings app. By setting these tasks as Routines in the app, you can eliminate the hassle of repeating these daily tasks yourself, such as manually adjusting the settings for loads of laundry or turning on the air purifier every time you open a window. Now, you can experience a better, smarter way to live each day with the SmartThings Home Life’s customized home service, tailored just for you. Read on to learn more about how SmartThings Home Life elevates any situation in your daily life to be smarter, safer and more convenient.

Indulge in a Delicious Dinner for One

After a long week at the office, I decided to pick up some beef tenderloin for myself on my way home. When I return home, I’m unsure of what I want to cook, so I say, “Hi Bixby, find me some recipes with beef tenderloin.” After hearing a few options, I choose the recipe that sounds the most appetizing and begin cooking right away. According to Bixby, the key to this dish is properly roasting the meat. I use the Sensor Cook to sear the tenderloin to medium. The kitchen hood turns on automatically as soon as I start using the induction, so I continue to cook without worrying about any lingering odors in the house. I know I’m not the most talented chef, but I feel great about cooking a perfectly seared steak.

Before I start eating, I open the window to feel the spring breeze. As I plate my meal, SmartThings Cooking recommends me a wine that complements the steak, and the air purifier turns on after analyzing the air coming through the window. After taking pictures of my first successfully cooked meal, I take a sip of wine. It feels as if the fatigue from an exhausting week just melts away.

□ SmartThings Cooking

SmartThings Cooking is a service that helps any user easily prepare meals like a professional chef. Thanks to an interactive cooking guide that reads out recipes and sends instructions to kitchen appliances, users can solely focus on cooking without the need to dig through recipe books while handling food. Going even further for convenience, users can enjoy high-quality cuisine by simply scanning the bar code on a meal kit. SmartThings Cooking will help users prepare their meals through connected kitchen appliances. In addition, by scanning the labels on meat packages, SmartThings Cooking can recommend different recipes and tips on storage methods. Users can also scan wine labels to save them to a wine list, keep track of their inventory and get recipe recommendations that pair well with each wine.

□ SmartThings Air Care

SmartThings Air Care is a service that provides a complete air care solution using your home appliances, such as air conditioners and air purifiers. You can breathe easy with the Air Quality Keeper, which monitors and controls the air quality in your home automatically. The app also recommends air purification methods to maintain healthy indoor air quality based on current conditions. Whether you’re relaxing in the living room on a dusty day or preparing a feast in the kitchen, users can always have fresh, breathable air without ever opening a window or pressing a button.

Take Care of Your Pet From a Distance

These days, due to an important project at work, I haven’t always been able to make it home on time. I’m worried about my pet, Max, who has been spending more time alone at home. Thankfully, whenever I miss him, I open the SmartThings app to check on him. In the past, the app alerted me that Max frequently barked while alone, but these alerts have decreased after he went through training sessions with the vet. I’m proud of him for doing so well by himself at home. I turn on the lights and TV with the app in the evening so Max doesn’t feel lonely. It looks like I’ll be working overtime again today, so I fill up Max’s dinner in his bowl through a feeder in advance.

Suddenly, a SmartThings Home Care notification pops up from my parents’ house. I turn on my parent’s Jet Bot AI camera to look around, discovering that my mom tripped on the kitchen floor. I immediately call her, and she says that she cried out for help when she fell and couldn’t get up afterward. Thankfully, she says that she wasn’t hurt. This weekend, I will definitely take some time to visit her with Max.

□ SmartThings Pet Care

SmartThings Pet Care creates a customized environment for any pet using your connected home devices. For instance, your air conditioner can be set to an optimal temperature depending on your pet’s breed, and your air purifier can effectively clean your pet’s fur from the air. Users can also turn on the TV or some music to keep your pets company while they are alone at home, creating a stable and safe environment for the pet no matter where the owner is. In addition, users can receive notifications when their pets bark or review the notification history to identify any possible signs of separation anxiety.

□ SmartThings Home Care

SmartThings Home Care’s Family Care service provides a sense of security for any home. For instance, when the Jet Bot AI detects a family member shouting, “Hi Bixby, please help,” it immediately sends an alert to the other family members. Users can then search all over the house using the camera on the robot vacuum cleaner or contact another family member to help handle the situation. With safety at its core, SmartThings Home Care’s Family Care service can help alleviate concerns about leaving any family members alone in the house.

Keep Your Golf Clothes Lasting Longer

I like to spend all of my Sundays playing golf with my friends. After playing a round, I always come home and store my brand-new golf shoes in the ShoeDresser to keep them nice and clean. The shoes are comfortable, so I want to keep them in good condition and wear them the next time I play 18 holes. After putting away my shoes, I go to the dressing room and put my golf wear in the AirDresser. SmartThings Clothing Care recommends a wash cycle perfect for the fabric of my golf shirts and pants. I save this cycle as ‘My Golf Care’. From there, I use the time I saved to organize the rest of my gear. I always feel recharged after spending the weekend playing golf, and it gives me full energy to start another week.

□ SmartThings Clothing Care

SmartThings Clothing Care is a service that makes properly caring for clothes fun and easy. The service learns your specific habits based on the time, day and weather. From there, SmartThings Clothing Care suggests appropriate clothing care tips for the washer, dryer, AirDresser and ShoeDresser suitable for your clothes and shoes. This service provides holistic, integrated care for your wardrobe, depending on each piece’s use or purpose. Often, properly caring for clothes is a difficult task. By saving and naming these clothing recommendations as an automated course in the SmartThings app, you can ensure your clothing lasts without remembering all the fine details. Going beyond quality care, you can also manage your clothes like a pro using the recommendations provided to maximize the synergy of your clothing care appliances.

Celebrate Spring With a Deep Clean

As the weather gets warmer, I always bring in the new season with some spring cleaning. I start by planting some flowers and washing my winter blankets. A couple of days ago, the SmartThings app notified me to replace my air purifier filters. The filters arrived just in time, so I replace them right away. I feel very productive, as I’ve knocked out an important task on my spring cleaning checklist. Then, I vacuum away the dust in every corner of my house. I celebrate a job well done by lying on my sofa with a glass of cool water, feeling fully refreshed. I look forward to the upcoming spring season.

□ SmartThings Home Care

SmartThings Home Care is a service that not only keeps tabs on all of your Samsung home appliances, but also responds to and helps prevent problems by predicting them in advance. For instance, the app sends you an early freeze risk alert when the weather becomes rapidly cold. It also offers a defrost guide and recommends you to use your air conditioner’s diagnostic functions as the weather warms up. Additionally, the service checks the status of any replaceable components in real time, sending you a notification when a replacement is required and streamlining your process to purchase a replacement. With SmartThings Home Care’s friendly chatbot service and its step-by-step response guide, users can troubleshoot home appliance issues independently without relying on a repairman for simple tasks.

Save Energy Today for a Better Tomorrow

I’m very passionate about saving the environment — I carry a tumbler instead of a disposable cup, I use an eco-bag to avoid plastic bags and I eat a vegan diet. Recently, I’ve been exploring other ways to reduce my carbon footprint, so I have been looking into managing the energy consumption of my home appliances. With SmartThings Energy, I can check how much energy each device uses, control its energy consumption and receive tips on reducing energy usage for my most used devices. The best part is the AI Saving Mode, which automatically switches my devices to Energy Saving Mode before they reach a preset usage target. I hope my efforts, whether big or small, can help build a sustainable future.

□ SmartThings Energy

SmartThings Energy allows users to take control of their energy consumption by providing real-time, detailed and accurate information on where and how energy is used within their home. The service measures energy levels in kilowatt-hours and cost over time, so any user can easily understand how much energy a device uses. The app also offers specific tips on reducing energy usage and encourages users to integrate eco-conscious activities into their day-to-day lives. Additionally, turning on AI Saving Mode helps reduce your energy usage by automatically switching your devices to Energy Saving Mode once they reach a certain energy use.

Samsung Electronics today announced the release of the next generation of SmartThings, the premier technology enabling connected living and driving the future of IoT. The eponymous mobile and Windows desktop applications now feature the enhanced updates. As part of SmartThings’ ongoing commitment to simplify the connected home experience, the new interface offers an easier, more robust user journey, and faster load times with a brand-new interface.

“We’re pleased to introduce the new SmartThings experience,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Corporate Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “We’ve listened to our customers and have invested in our technology to enhance the user experience to make it simpler. As smart homes continue to surge in popularity, SmartThings is the ideal platform that allows everyone to enjoy a smarter life with connected devices.”

The new SmartThings interface makes it easier to discover connected home experiences, while ensuring a seamless transition from SmartThings’ previous version. SmartThings’ enhanced design breaks down the app into five different sections – Favorites, Devices, Life, Automations, and Menu.

Favorites is the new home screen within SmartThings and gathers the devices, scenes, and services used most for quicker access

Devices lets users view and control all devices, connecting TVs, light bulbs, appliances, and more.

Life is a place to explore the growing world of connected living where users can discover new SmartThings services that transform physical products into meaningful user experiences. Users can learn about enhanced functions that improve their overall living experience, such as SmartThings Cooking, a one-stop-shop that creates seamless kitchen and meal-prepping experiences.

Automations connects devices and allows them to work together and respond to specific conditions in the home, such as a door opening and a light turning on.

Menu will house additional SmartThings features including SmartThings Labs, Notifications, History, and Settings.

The new interface is available for Android devices starting today, and iOS will follow shortly after. This update follows SmartThings’ recent announcement of its Windows application, which offers a similar experience right from a Galaxy Book and any other Windows PC.

SmartThings continues to double down on enhancing its technology. Recently, SmartThings announced the integration of the Matter protocol into its ecosystem, holding its leading spot as the platform with the most flexible ways to connect devices, including Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, and now Matter. SmartThings’ open platform brings together devices, developers, and services to offer one of the largest integrated ecosystems. With hundreds of certified brands and millions of active users on the platform, SmartThings facilitates innovations in connected living across multiple use cases.

In the IoT era, what will the “smart home” look like? From September 8 to October 23, Samsung Electronics will be showcasing its vision for the smart home at the Gwangju Design Biennale, one of the leading international exhibitions of contemporary art, where this year exhibitors from over 30 countries are participating.

Samsung’s exhibit at the event will offer visitors the exciting chance to experience the future smart home, where home appliances are all connected through the latest advancements in IoT, as well as showcase the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator, and Samsung Connect application, which are at the heart of Samsung’s smart home vision.

A Better Lifestyle with Family Hub

Just imagine the scene. You are busy in the kitchen when you say, “Bixby, run cleaning mode,” to your Family Hub refrigerator. In an instant, your robot vacuum cleaner, POWERbot, turns on and begins to clean. As Family Hub also plays your favorite tune, you glance over to check on the status of your laundry in your FlexWash laundry machine, which sits in another part of the house, via Family Hub’s display panel.

A refrigerator is a home appliance that runs 24/7, all year round, for families to use anytime they want. This is the main reason why Samsung has positioned Family Hub at the core of its smart home vision.

Samsung Family Hub refrigerator features a beautiful, large 21.5-inch screen, as well as utilizes the latest in voice recognition technology. Samsung, leveraging its leadership in IoT to build an ecosystem for contents and services beyond just products, provides users with vast content and services options. Families can manage food items, find recipes, shop for groceries, as well as enjoy various entertainment options. These smart options are only available on Family Hub, with Samsung continuing to grow Family Hub’s partner ecosystem by collaborating with more than 100 partner companies across North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Samsung Connect Expands the Smart Home Ecosystem

Samsung Connect for the smart home was first demonstrated at IFA 2017, as an integrated application system that controls different home appliances, and based on the cloud, is compatible with any device or operating system. In the Samsung Smart Home with the Samsung Connect app, users can control as well as check on the status of nearly every device or appliance in their home. Voice support will also soon be integrated into the Connect app.

To illustrate how Samsung Connect works, picture this: While driving home, you say “Bixby, tell me the room temperature.” The sensor on your Wind-Free air conditioner at home, which is linked to the Samsung Connect App, measures the temperature of your home, and your mobile device communicates the reading to you by voice. Since you realize it is getting a little too warm at home, you ask Samsung Connect to turn on the air conditioner before you arrive.

Along these lines, Samsung has also been focusing on expanding its open ecosystem by closely interacting with other manufacturers. As a diamond member of the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), the company is actively pursuing the standardization of the smart home and IoT platform.

Samsung is also working with various third parties to integrate voice support, for example, with Amazon to integrate the Alexa voice assistant into its refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and robot vacuums, and also with Google Home for integration into its robotic vacuums. Samsung plans to focus on expanding services through collaboration with various smart home companies, and increase the range of devices compatible with SmartThings, building a comprehensive IoT ecosystem that ultimately connects everything.

Sounds very futuristic, right? Samsung Smart Home is already becoming the reality thanks to the endless efforts of Samsung to integrate a smart system and IoT functionality to connect across home appliances. It may not be very long before we all are living in smart homes ourselves!

Samsung is showcasing, at CES 2017, a full lineup of intuitive built-in kitchen appliances designed with equal focus on exciting innovation and exceptional style. The products of the Black Stainless Kitchen Suites introduce new levels of convenience and connectivity to the built-in category, completing a modern collection that’s both stylish and smart.

Samsung’s stylish kitchen setup was designed with the help of renowned Italian furniture brand Scavolini.

To properly showcase the premium appliances, Samsung partnered with renowned Italian furniture brand Scavolini to build a modern kitchen exhibit at the heart of Samsung’s CES booth. The kitchen’s sleek and refined aesthetic blends seamlessly with those of the showcased appliances, which include Samsung’s latest cooktops and ovens, as well as a hood, refrigerator and dishwasher.

Visitors to the space are provided up-close looks at exciting innovations designed to create a smarter and more convenient kitchen experience.

Samsung’s 4-Door French Door Refrigerators, for instance, feature FlexZone technology to allow users to customize temperature settings to best suit stored foods. The collection’s WaterWall Dishwasher, meanwhile, features jet-powered technology to eliminate the most stubborn of food stains.

Samsung’s built-in Wall Oven features Flex Duo technology, which allows the two stacked ovens to effectively serve as three independent ovens. This innovation allows users to simultaneously cook two different dishes in the same compartment and at different temperatures.

The Built-in Wall Oven (left) and MWO Combination Wall Oven.

Also integrated seamlessly into the kitchen setup for visitors’ perusal are the collection’s induction and gas cooktops, as well as a hood. The latter two appliances are presented connected to a Galaxy S7 edge running Samsung’s Smart Home app.

The Induction Cooktop features heat-adjusting Flex Zone technology, as well as an LED Virtual Flame.

The Hood’s Bluetooth technology allows it to sync with the collection’s cooktops and automatically power on when a connected cooktop is in operation.

The smartphones on display demonstrate how the connected appliances can provide users with useful information, such as the cooktop’s temperature and power status.

Like the rest of the collection, each device is available in a choice of either a black or traditional stainless steel finish – to cater to contemporary consumers’ refined tastes – and each features a proprietary Samsung technology that streamlines the cooking process.

When inspected up close, the built-in products reveal to visitors the level of detail to which Samsung applied the collection’s theme of premium, ‘smart’ design. Each product’s knobs, for instance, are illuminated with a stylish icy blue light that makes their controls easy to adjust.

The appliances’ knobs are illuminated with an icy blue light that reflects the collection’s stylish aesthetic and makes adjustments easy.

Speaking of controls, each of the built-in appliances was designed to enable users to enjoy a more connected and streamlined cooking experience. The appliances’ ability to communicate with one another allows users to automate certain steps in the cooking process, and quickly and easily monitor the status of a dish via the Samsung Smart Home app.

The holidays are hectic – dinners to plan, guests to entertain, shopping to do, lights to hang – but home doesn’t have to be. Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a leader in the connected home category, is setting out to show consumers how they can easily make their home run more efficiently this season with a few simple and smart solutions from the Samsung SmartThings ecosystem.

To show how easy it is, Samsung is working with the residents of South 13th Street in Philadelphia to help make their spectacular light display even brighter this season. Residents are using Samsung SmartThings Outlets to automate holiday indoor décor, SmartThings partner GE Z-Wave Plug-In Outdoor Smart Switches to manage outdoor lights and the Samsung SmartThings Hub to manage home settings from afar when traveling. The free SmartThings app is available on Android and iOS, and there is no monthly fee or subscription for the Samsung SmartThings devices.

“We know for many people, setting up their smart home can seem like a huge undertaking,” said Bill Lee, Vice President of Smart Home Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics America, Inc. “The residents of Miracle on South 13th Street in Philadelphia show that you can start small by easily integrating smart technology into existing set-ups, and then grow as your needs evolve. As lights go up and guests arrive, the holidays are a great time to start small and implement a few smart solutions to more simply manage the home and get more control over your daily routine.”

For more than a dozen years, the residents of Miracle on South 13th Street have outfitted their homes in spirited holiday décor that attracts tourists nationwide. This year, the homes will go even further with Samsung SmartThings – making holiday lights and décor easier to manage and more energy efficient. For example, install the Hub and:

Use the entire Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit and Water Sensor to keep tabs on your home while you’re traveling during the holiday so there are no leaky pipe surprises when you get back.

Help your holiday guests navigate your home by placing a Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor in the hallway, triggering smart lights to illuminate the way to the bathroom when they wake late at night.

Remotely turn off devices you accidently have left on when you’re out holiday shopping.
