Samsung Electronics today announced an update¹ to its AI-powered Bixby feature on its 2025 TV lineup, introducing a more advanced Bixby voice assistant designed to make information discovery more natural, intuitive and seamless.

Ask Your TV Anything. A Smarter Bixby Answers

A smarter Bixby voice assistant on Samsung TVs now delivers a more natural and personalized experience. With a smarter Bixby, users can easily wake it up by voice or by pressing the mic button to start a conversation — no commands, no menus, no typing.

The new Bixby understands context and follow-up questions, enabling more fluid interactions that feel like a real conversation. Powered by Generative AI, Bixby can answer any questions you may have, whether you’re asking about general information, such as “How tall is Mount Everest?” or recommendations like “Please suggest chill playlists for a rainy day”. By simply asking, Bixby can help answer questions about on-screen content, as it retrieves the most relevant details and displays them on screen. It’s a smarter, faster way to get more out of your TV without breaking your viewing flow.

Smarter Bixby Enhances Click To Search

With this update, Bixby is now integrated into Click to Search, making it easier than ever to discover and explore entertainment and more, whether watching live TV, cable channels or Samsung TV Plus. Users can ask about an actor, a show or a broader topic — and receive answers instantly, right on their TV.

Bixby even enables Click to Search to go beyond what’s on screen. For everyday questions such as “Tell me the recipe for making pasta” or “Do you know any good movies about chefs?” Bixby delivers contextual responses using external information. It’s search made simple.

Effortless Home Device Management With Bixby and SmartThings

Equipped with a smarter Bixby, Samsung TVs can detect, connect and control appliances with Samsung SmartThings enabled. By speaking directly to their screen, users can leverage the SmartThings ecosystem to execute voice commands, such as “Turn off the oven now,” or “Set the air conditioner to 25 degrees,” transforming their smart TV into a central hub for managing other smart home appliances.

Moreover, Bixby is secured by Samsung Knox, the industry-leading security solution designed to protect users’ sensitive personal data. Users can enjoy AI-driven personalized features without worrying about privacy concerns, as no user voice data is stored on servers or TVs.

Ongoing Support and Availability

Smarter Bixby will be available on 2025 Samsung TVs, including Neo QLED, OLED, The Frame and QLED models, with availability starting in South Korea and extending to global markets in phases.

Building on the integration of Bixby within Vision AI, Samsung will introduce a newly upgraded version of Vision AI in October 2025. This evolved Vision AI will be available through Samsung’s 7-year free Tizen OS Upgrade program, which ensures ongoing software enhancements and long-term support.

The highlight of this update is the integration of SmartThings with Samsung Health, designed to improve users’ sleep environments while enabling more personalized automation experiences. Smarter Sleep Environments With Samsung Health Integration

Sleep environment reports¹ from Samsung Health on Galaxy devices help users create optimal conditions for rest by providing detailed insights into key factors — such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels and light intensity — through connected devices and sensors. These reports summarize the previous night’s sleep conditions and offer personalized suggestions for improvement.

When paired with a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, the latest update enables SmartThings to automatically adjust the environment based on the user’s actual sleep and wake times.² For example, routines can be set to turn off lights and the TV at bedtime or to open curtains and play music in the morning.

Greater Flexibility With SmartThings Routines

With the latest update, SmartThings now supports automation routines based on recurring schedules — weekly, monthly or annual — offering added flexibility for a variety of scenarios. For instance, users can automatically change the color of smart lights to celebrate special occasions like family birthdays.

In addition, SmartThings routines now integrate with Samsung TV Plus on 2025 Samsung TV models. This allows users to include entertainment preferences in their smart home routines — whether it’s setting the TV to turn on the news in the morning or switching to a favorite channel at a preset time to ensure they don’t miss a show.

Broadcasting via SmartThings-Connected Speakers

A new broadcasting feature allows users to send voice messages across SmartThings-connected speakers, making in-home communication more convenient. For example, if a parent is away and sends a voice message through the SmartThings app — “I’ll be home soon, but have a snack from the fridge if you’re hungry” — it will automatically play on the designated home speaker. With real-time message delivery, families can stay connected no matter where they are.

Expanding Calm Onboarding to More Devices

Samsung has offered the Calm Onboarding³ feature since late 2023, streamlining setup for Samsung home appliances purchased through Samsung.com or official Samsung stores by linking the entire product journey — from order and delivery to connection with the SmartThings app.

In the latest SmartThings update, Samsung is expanding Calm Onboarding beyond its own products to include compatible third-party smart home devices for a more seamless and intuitive connectivity experience. Users who purchase SmartThings-compatible smart home devices directly from Samsung.com will now receive purchase and delivery updates within the SmartThings app. Additionally, users will receive step-by-step onboarding instructions to simplify product setup. The rollout will begin in Korea, with plans to expand to other countries.⁴

Matter 1.4 Support

SmartThings continues to advance the IoT landscape by expanding its support for Matter 1.4. The latest version of the standard includes a wide range of energy management devices — such as water heater, heat pump, solar power device, battery storage device, mounted on/off control switch and mounted dimmable load control device. These newly supported device categories build on existing popular device types like lights, thermostats, switches, air conditioners, air purifiers, fans, door locks and more.

By integrating AI-powered routines, broadening device compatibility and adopting the latest Matter standard, SmartThings reinforces its ongoing commitment to innovation — making the connected home more intelligent, energy-efficient and seamless for users and their families.

Samsung Electronics is reimagining smart homes through Home AI, a new vision of smart living that understands user needs and delivers hyper-personalized experiences.

Samsung Newsroom attended the final Tech Forum session, titled “Understanding Home, Understanding You: Rethinking the Role of the Home in the Era of AI,” to examine the transformative potential of AI in smart home innovation and the need for collaboration to deliver on the promise of Home AI.

Smart UI as the Gateway to Home AI

User interface (UI) is a critical element in the Home AI experience, serving as the bridge between users and their mobile devices, TVs, home appliances and more.

“UI is a key area in the age of AI,” said Patrick Chomet, Mobile Strategy Advisor at Samsung Electronics. “With the advent of LLM multimodal AI, a big shift has taken place in User Interface (UI), enabling people to get things done in natural and simple ways such as gesture, voice or text interaction. Users no longer needs to understand devices, rather the device should understand the user’s intent.”

He explained how intelligent user interfaces not only enable more intuitive interactions but also procure deeper understandings of user context and intent, which brands can use to optimize in-home solutions.

“We have implemented an intuitive and concise UI for various SmartThings features,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics.

She engaged the audience with examples of the latest SmartThings functions including Quick Remote, a feature that enables users to control their TVs with a connected Galaxy smartphone; 3D Map View, a feature that allows users to manage their entire home and check energy consumption through Galaxy smartphones and tablets; and Home Insight, a feature that provides timely home reports and delivers personalized recommendations to users.

The Role of Platforms and Standardization in Shaping Smart Homes

The panelists then delved into the efforts required to make Home AI a reality. Moderator Carolina Milanesi, CEO and founder of Heart of Tech and President at Creative Strategies, introduced the topics of integrated AI platforms and industry standards to guide the discussion.

“As we scale our AI platform to reach across applications, services and multiple devices, the experience can be optimized around the user,” said Chomet. “User context and richer insights can be gathered to deliver relevant and truly personalized experiences.”

“The SmartThings platform is 10 years in the making and while the concept of a smart home isn’t new, AI technology is what is truly creating the intelligent home” added Jung, highlighting how a consistent and connected AI platform empowers users to enjoy effortless convenience from anywhere. “The transition from a device-centric philosophy to an AI-powered, user-centric one provides users with a personalized, connected experience that feels like home — no matter where they are.”

Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), noted the importance of industry standards in building an ecosystem in which devices can be connected simply, securely and seamlessly.

“Building blocks for AI in the home are grounded in seamless connectivity, with AI relying on device interoperability to thrive. A common language like Matter enables devices to communicate effortlessly, setting the stage for AI innovation,” he said, highlighting that the goal is not just to create a perfect connected experience but to foster a robust and trustworthy industry while making smart homes more accessible and reliable.

“Alliance Members like Samsung are doing remarkable work in the AI space, showcasing how technology can adapt to users’ needs, creating a smarter and more personalized living experience,” said Richardson, reaffirming the company’s dedication to collaboration. “I am continually inspired to see how these advancements are shaping the future of connected homes.”

A More Personalized, Secure Smart Home

Addressing concerns regarding the challenge of providing personalized experiences in homes shared by multiple people, Chomet spoke on how AI technology can understand intent and context to provide an optimized experience for each user. He emphasized that Samsung will innovate for multi-device connectivity, rather than individual products.

Jung also cited practical cases of how Samsung Health and SmartThings are connecting data and devices to provide hyper-personalized health experiences. For example, Samsung Health and SmartThings can optimize sleep environments by automatically adjusting temperature and humidity based on users’ sleep patterns and the environmental conditions they live in. When Galaxy devices recognize that users have been exercising, SmartThings will activate appliances such as air conditioners and washing machines upon their return home.

The discussion then touched on the critical role of security and the protection of personal information in smart homes.

“Samsung places the highest priority on security in every aspect,” said Jung. She highlighted how Knox Matrix safeguards the smart home ecosystem while Knox Vault protects hardware. “By integrating the expansive SmartThings ecosystem and AI with the robust security of Samsung Knox, users can enjoy personalized smart living experiences safely.”

“With more than eight out of ten consumers stating that security is ‘important’ or ‘very important’ to them, security and privacy protection are key factors,” said Richardson, echoing the importance of trust in connected devices. “Matter, our next-generation smart home standard, is built with security in mind and offers a level of trust and clarity users can rely on.”

The Home AI session highlighted the advancements AI brings to creating smarter, safer and more adaptive living spaces. By combining hyper-personalized experiences with advanced security measures, Samsung’s innovations are paving the way for a new era of intelligent, connected homes that integrate into every aspect of daily life.

New Ways To Get Things Done: AI That Learns, Adapts and Delivers

At the heart of the Galaxy S25 series is the evolution of its AI capabilities, powered by the next-generation One UI 7 operating system. This upgrade introduces advanced features designed to make tasks easy and intuitive. For example, the newly introduced Now Brief learns user routines and delivers customized information like exercise updates, translations, music and more, directly to the lock screen, eliminating the need to toggle between multiple apps.

Another game-changing feature is AI Select, introduced for the first time on the Galaxy S25 series. Accessible through the Edge Panel, AI Select functions as a personal AI assistant, capable of summarizing lengthy articles in seconds or aiding in creative tasks like generating colorful images with Drawing Assist.

With One UI 7, the Galaxy S25 series’ built-in multimodal AI recognizes natural language, images and text, enabling users to interact naturally and achieve more with minimal effort. This means its intelligent features can be triggered by simple voice commands. For instance, saying “My eyes are tired” prompts the Galaxy S25 series to activate the blue light filter, while “Find a photo of Max from last winter in a red coat, eating cake” searches the Gallery app to locate the desired image.

Circle to Search has also been enhanced to identify music playing on-screen without needing to open a separate app.

While watching YouTube videos, users can also issue voice commands like “List the place mentioned in this video and save it as a Note,” and Galaxy AI, powered by Google’s Gemini, seamlessly saves the location directly to Samsung Notes.

The Galaxy S25 series features a Personal Data Engine, developed in partnership with Oxford Semantic Technologies, which contextually understands user preferences and routines while safeguarding data. Advanced AI features from Galaxy AI and SmartThings extend home management to include the well-being of family members and pets. As one of the initial members of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, Samsung has partnered with the Alliance to support, develop and promote Matter, the connectivity standard for smart home and IoT devices, designed to ensure interoperability, accessibility and security across the smart home ecosystem.

New Efforts for Sustainability: Embracing a More Circular Approach to the Latest Galaxy Smartphones

Samsung continues to prioritize sustainability with initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact. The company aims to incorporate at least one recycled material in every module of every mobile product by 2030.²

In particular, the Galaxy Watch’s sleep apnea feature connects with telehealth services to provide comprehensive health management. If the advanced wearable sensors detect signs of sleep apnea, users are guided toward appropriate medical consultations to support continued sleep management at home.

On January 7, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 opened in Las Vegas — bringing together the latest technological innovations from around the world. Map View, an AI-powered smart home management platform, offers a range of intuitive tools for arranging furniture and designing spaces. Security First: Enhancing Connectivity and Safety

Security is at the core of Bespoke Home AI. Samsung has made protecting user data a top priority by leveraging Knox technology to ensure greater security for homes. With this safety in mind, SmartThings is rapidly expanding its integrated ecosystem — providing enhanced security in a connected environment where devices monitor each other’s security status.

Home AI: Technology That Understands Users’ Tastes and Their Living Spaces

The BESPOKE AI Lifestyle Zone demonstrated various connected experiences with Samsung home appliances including the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI and the Bespoke Slide-in Range.

When a user asks Bixby if there are any ingredients nearing their expiration date, the voice assistant provides a list. A follow-up request for recipes prompts Bixby to suggest tailored recommendations⁶ using those ingredients. Bixby can then send the recipe instructions to the Bespoke Slide-in Range, automatically setting the temperature and cooking time.

▲ When mobile GPS and home sensors detect that users are away, appliances can autonomously operate in a Home AI environment to match users’ preferences. Noisy tasks like the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI emptying its dust bin⁷ or the WindFree Air Conditioner drying its interior can be handled while users are away.

If sensors detect suspicious activity while family members are away, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI moves to the location to assess the situation with its internal camera and sends a SmartThings notification to the user’s mobile device for real-time video monitoring. If an intrusion is identified, an alert will immediately be sent to the user’s connected security provider.⁸ Furthermore, Samsung appliances proactively prevent everyday dangers. For instance, the Bespoke AI Induction cooktop⁹ will automatically adjust its power to prevent any accidents if left on for too long.¹⁰

Video displays presented Samsung’s Multi Device Experience (MDE) features and highlighted the values of Ease of Use, Care and Saving — showcasing the WindFree Air Conditioner that customizes operation according to usage patterns, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI that records videos of pets¹¹ with a built-in camera and sends a notification to SmartThings and the SmartThings energy usage report¹² that makes energy use more efficient.

AI Home Touch Screens: Easy Control Anytime, Anywhere

AI Home¹³ touch screens allow users to reduce the burden of household chores and easily control their connected Samsung home appliances from the comfort of their home.¹⁴

The Screens Everywhere Zone showcased a refrigerator with a new 9-inch AI Home screen and the new Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer set with 7-inch AI Home screen, both introduced this year. Appliances equipped with AI Home can be controlled securely without the need for a separate hub.

Samsung’s booth introduced immersive future home experiences centered around the themes of Home for Efficiency, Home for Wellness, Home for Loved Ones, Home for Productivity and Home for Art — offering a comprehensive look at how AI is shaping modern living.

The Home for Efficiency zone demonstrated how AI technology and SmartThings Energy streamline household tasks and energy management. Visitors were impressed by solutions that focused on energy saving and time management, fostering a more eco-conscious lifestyle.

“I feel like [SmartThings Energy features] will have a direct impact in helping me save money,” said Jay Trofe, an attendee from Denver, Pennsylvania. “This will help me greatly reduce my [utility bills], especially when I go away on vacation.”

Samsung showcased AI-powered smart appliances designed to save time and enhance efficiency. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, for example, adjusts washing and drying based on fabric type while completing both tasks — eliminating the need to move the laundry across machines. Similarly, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI learns users’ daily routines to autonomously clean floors and manage mopping through Bixby.¹

Home for Loved Ones

In the Home for Loved Ones zone, visitors were introduced to AI solutions that help care for family members, pets and plants. Integrated with advanced connected sensors, SmartThings can detect incidents like falls, sending emergency alerts to pre-approved connected devices such as family members’ smartphones, TVs and Family Hub refrigerators.

This exhibition space captured visitors’ attention by showcasing comprehensive management solutions for all household members in user’s lives including pets, children and plants. Highlights included the Galaxy SmartTag2 for tracking pet activity and detecting unusual behavior, and SmartThings-enabled features that send alerts when a baby cries or monitor and adjust the temperature and light levels to support plant care.

The Home for Productivity zone spotlighted tools for optimizing work and study powered by Galaxy AI. Visitors experienced the soon-to-be-released Galaxy Book5 Pro’s AI Select feature, enabling them to instantly search specific areas on the screen or extract text from images for quick and easy access to information.

Home for Art

In the Home for Art zone, visitors were greeted by famous works of art — presented by Samsung Art Store in collaboration with seven renowned art institutions including the Musée d’Orsay, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), Museo Nacional del Prado, Tate, Belvedere and Art Basel. This area offered a unique cultural experience to visitors while showcasing the versatility of Samsung’s cutting-edge screens.

As such, Samsung is prioritizing data intelligence research to transform vast amounts of data into meaningful and intuitive user experiences.

Samsung Newsroom takes a closer look at how Samsung’s advanced data research and innovative connectivity solutions are pioneering the era of personalized AI.

The Power of Data Intelligence in Personalized AI

A truly personalized AI experience starts with understanding the user. Data intelligence identifies a user’s needs at specific moments based not only on historical device usage data but also on the user’s present context. This enables appropriate services to be delivered in a timely manner. However, there are challenges — for example, users don’t hand in refined reports of their needs and wants; the matching of expected needs and potential services must be carried out in real time; and most of all, personal information must constantly be kept safe.

As Samsung reaches consumers across nearly all daily touchpoints — including work, entertainment, household chores, health and security — the company has the unique opportunity to gain deep insights into user behaviors and preferences.

In order to harness this potential, Samsung has strengthened its data technology capabilities by researching user data collected annually from hundreds of millions of devices and services — all in strict compliance with internal and external regulations. As AI models develop a better understanding of users through data collection, processing and analysis, they can leverage retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to deliver more personalized services for different contexts. By using technologies to connect reliable, logic-based knowledge bases to large language models (LLMs), these AI models access the latest, most reliable information and find the most suitable answers.

As Samsung focuses on technologies that connect data to refine personalized AI experiences, a key question is how can such vast and complex data be managed more effectively and tailored precisely to individual needs? The answer, in part, lies in knowledge graphs.

Enhancing AI Experiences With Knowledge Graphs

A knowledge graph is a knowledge representation technology that organizes related information in an interconnected graph format, making it easily interpretable for both humans and computers. By defining individual entities within the data and linking them, their relationship can be represented as a “triple” in the form of “subject — predicate — object.” For example, “the capital of South Korea is Seoul” can be represented in the following graph, “South Korea — capital — Seoul.” Various types of knowledge such as people, objects, times and places can be structured in a highly refined manner by connecting numerous entities in this triple format.

Unlike traditional relational databases that fill tables with information, knowledge graphs effectively store data and quickly retrieve information or new inferences as needed.

Samsung is actively advancing research in knowledge graphs. While earlier forms of data usage were limited to individual apps, this technology allows for free data search and utilization across app or service boundaries — enabling a hyper-personalized experience as if the device were tailored exclusively to the user.

When combined with Samsung’s on-device AI, knowledge graphs allow users to experience highly customized AI services while protecting sensitive personal data from external exposure. This technology is expected to be applied across various products and devices.

The key to implementing knowledge graphs is the ability to quickly find specific answers from information represented in the graph. Converting constantly changing real-world data into graphs and efficiently extracting information requires complex computations — and as the graphs grow, rapid information retrieval becomes more challenging.

To bolster its capabilities in this area, Samsung acquired Oxford Semantic Technologies in July. Oxford Semantic Technologies, a U.K.-based startup renowned for its knowledge graph technology, specializes in optimizing data processing and advanced inference to facilitate swift understanding and precise extraction of information from knowledge graphs.

Samsung has collaborated with Oxford Semantic Technologies on graph databases and ontologies¹ since 2018, and the recent acquisition is anticipated to create synergy in personalized AI research across Samsung’s product ecosystem. The company plans to develop applications that offer valuable experiences to consumers and explore new research avenues in various areas including the integration of generative AI and knowledge graphs.

Empowering Everyday Life With Data-Driven Insights

Samsung is rapidly incorporating personalized AI features powered by data intelligence across a wide range of products and services to enrich users’ daily lives.

Digital healthcare is one example. The Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Ring comprehensively analyze user health data including sleep, exercise and heart rate to offer an Energy Score via the Samsung Health app. Going beyond simple data measurement, this analysis provides an easy-to-understand numeric summary of a user’s daily health status and personalized insights for individual activities. By researching the weighted importance of each factor in the Energy Score based on age and gender, Samsung has developed a more customized approach to health management.

The entertainment experience has also been enhanced through data-driven insights. In the U.S., Gaming Hub — Samsung’s game platform available on its smartphones — uses explainable AI (XAI) to offer personalized game recommendations. Leveraging a model of the user’s preferences, this technology not only recommends games but also explains the reasoning behind each suggestion to help users select the games that suit them best.

Refined AI Experiences With SmartThings

Personalized AI will evolve as more devices connect with each other and acquire usage data from users’ daily lives. At Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24) in October, Samsung unveiled Home Insight — a service that allows users to manage and control their smart home through SmartThings. The feature analyzes users’ lifestyle patterns, device usage history and home conditions to provide real-time reports and tailored recommendations such as turning off devices or utilizing specific features based on different situations.

In addition, Samsung has a personalized AI feature to support the well-being and safety of family members in need. Launched in June, SmartThings Family Care allows users to remotely monitor family members and take any necessary actions through SmartThings-connected devices and location-based data. The company plans to expand these AI-connected capabilities to health devices, supporting family health in areas like sleep and diet.

Samsung is advancing technology that allows devices to recognize users and provide seamless, personalized experiences across all connected devices. For example, the company is planning to enable users who have large text mode activated on their smartphones to automatically apply the setting to other devices with a single voice command. Additionally, Samsung is exploring functions that use sensors and devices within the home to detect a user’s location and adjust lighting, temperature and humidity according to individual preferences.

Personalized AI Needs Robust Security

Security is a fundamental requirement for delivering safe, personalized AI. To ensure the protection of personal information and address biases in AI systems, a multi-faceted approach is needed — including improving data processing and model training processes and implementing a rigorous verification process for outputs.

When collecting internal and external data for AI model training, Samsung performs data pre-processing to check and filter for privacy violations. Additionally, the company is strengthening its safety verification of AI outputs by addressing risks related to harm, bias, privacy and jailbreak² vulnerabilities.

Samsung’s Knox Matrix further elevates security in a multi-device connected environment. Using blockchain technology, connected devices can monitor each other for security threats through Trust Chain; securely share user data by transmitting only encrypted information to servers via Credential Sync; and apply consistent security standards across operating systems such as Android, Tizen and Windows with Cross Platform. Samsung plans to expand Knox Matrix to cover its mobile devices, TVs and home appliances.

Samsung Electronics today announced the signing of a strategic technology partnership agreement with Hyundai Motor and Kia. The companies’ shared goal is to elevate users’ connectivity experiences by fully integrating the SmartThings IoT platform with Hyundai and Kia’s software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

The signing ceremony was held at Samsung Electronics’ Seoul R&D Campus, with Samsung’s participants including Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, President, CTO of Device eXperience (DX) Division and Head of Samsung Research; Seungbeom Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Device Platform Center; and Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President and Head of IoT R&D Team. Participants from Hyundai and Kia included Chang Song, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division and Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group Infotainment Development Center.

Through this agreement, Samsung will integrate SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s next-generation infotainment system to offer a differentiated experience. First, they will introduce the global location solution function for vehicles and smart keys based on the SmartThings Find platform, which is a crowdsourced network of hundreds of millions of Samsung Galaxy devices that use the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to report their location. Through the SmartThings Find service, users can locate vehicles using nearby Galaxy smartphones — even without a 4G or 5G cellular network connection — meaning drivers can more easily track down their cars in the event of them being lost or stolen.

Additionally, drivers can use their Galaxy’s Quick Panel to control air conditioning and check their remaining range from their device. Vehicles can also be added to the connected SmartThings ecosystem, allowing users to return to a home with optimized conditions by controlling their Samsung air conditioners, air purifiers or other connected devices while driving home.

As part of the agreement, Samsung will also continue collaborating with Hyundai and Kia to provide various AI-based services tailored to customer lifestyles and preferences. The companies will expand the use of SmartThings to include in-vehicle health monitoring via cameras and Galaxy devices, pet care solutions that optimize vehicle environments for pets, as well as integration with smart apartment solutions and SDVs.

Consistent Steps Forward Enable Shared Progress

In January this year, Samsung and Hyundai announced to partnership focusing on home-to-car and car-to-home services that connect smartphones, vehicles and home appliances. Based on this agreement, the two organizations have been working toward a reality in which a Samsung device can be used to seamlessly control a Hyundai or Kia vehicle — and home appliances can also be easily controlled from inside the vehicle.

Samsung Electronics today announced it is showcasing its latest energy-efficient appliance lineup for the European lifestyle at IFA 2024. The new product range includes a BESPOKE AI Washer with A-55% extra energy efficiency,¹ a Bespoke AI Laundry Combo that achieves an A rating for the complete cycle² and an A-10% Bespoke Dishwasher.³ Drawing on its longstanding dedication to enhancing energy efficiency, Samsung has improved its core technologies to respond to consumer needs for better ways to save energy in everyday life.

“Samsung has a long track record of bringing its energy-efficient lineup to European markets, and IFA is an ideal setting for showcasing these types of solutions,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team for Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “We expect that the new models will be the right choice for customers who are seeking extra energy efficiency at home.”

A More Efficient Washing Experience

The most notable achievement out of Samsung’s high-energy rating lineup at IFA 2024 is the BESPOKE AI Washer. The model, planned for next year’s launching,⁴ consumes up to 55% less energy than the minimum energy efficiency requirements for a Class A rating.⁵ Following the A-40% model that launched in the first half of this year, the new product has applied Samsung’s technologies to achieve additional energy savings.

Samsung applies advanced technologies to achieve up to 55% less energy consumption than the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the Class A rating. The core of these advanced technologies is the Bubble Shot, which pulls soapy water through the circulation pump and sprays it on top of the laundry inside the drum. This makes washing more effective by drenching the laundry more easily and allowing the detergent to penetrate clothing evenly. It combines with Ecobubble and algorithms to enhance extra energy efficiency.

The implementation of AI Home⁶ is an additional noteworthy change. This 7″ wide LCD touchscreen on the device serves as an intuitive control center for the laundry. Not only can users quickly choose their laundry cycle, but they can also receive personalized washing recommendations that suit their habits and periodic needs.⁷ It allows for effective user control and laundry care.

All-in-One, Energy Efficient Laundry Solution

At IFA, Samsung is also displaying the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, which will soon be available in the European market. The model combines a washer and a dryer in a single machine freeing users from the hassle of transferring the load to the dryer after washing. The combo is distinctive in that there is a significant improvement in energy efficiency, achieving an A rating across the entire washing and drying cycle,⁸ with an A-20% for washing.⁹ This is the highest level in Samsung’s combo lineup in Europe.

Samsung has worked hard to improve the drying efficiency especially. The Heatpump Drying technology dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at low temperatures. Furthermore, a specially designed duct structure improves the efficiency of internal air circulation, allowing for the efficient reuse and transfer of heat energy. Meanwhile, to achieve a high energy rating in the wash-only cycle, the Bubble Shot Technology is implemented. It makes the laundry drench well by spraying soapy water from the top using the circulation pump. As a result, the combo’s complete wash cycle exceeds the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the Class A threshold by up to 20%, with the wash and dry cycle receiving a well-deserved Class A.

Clean Effectively, Save More Energy

The Bespoke Dishwasher¹⁰ with extra energy efficiency will be also displayed at IFA 2024. It not only boasts a stylish look with its Kitchen Fit Sliding Door¹¹ design that seamlessly matches kitchen furniture but also offers effective performance while saving energy by up to 10% more than the requirements for an A energy rating.¹²

A WaterJet Clean and an Active Fan Dry system play an important role in delivering this extra efficiency. First, WaterJet Clean delivers intensive cleaning from every angle with rotating dual wash arms, thanks to the specially designed All-in-one Sump module.¹³ It generates a unique flow path to make the product exceptionally power efficient and uses only 7.9 liters¹⁴ of water ― which is a significantly low level compared to conventional models¹⁵ ― without impacting its performance.

The Active Fan Dry system,¹⁶ on the other hand, enhances internal air circulation, leading to less energy consumption. It blows gentle and moderate wind using two fans on the walls of the tub during drying. Since this wind helps evaporate moisture, less latent heat is required from the rinsing water. Therefore, it reduces the amount of energy used for heating the rinsing water. As a result, users can neatly finish the cycle with enhanced energy efficiency.

Additional Energy Savings Through SmartThings Connectivity

With these advancements in hardware, Samsung’s new energy-efficient lineup also supports SmartThings AI Energy Mode.¹⁷ After connecting appliances to SmartThings, users can check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption. And when the estimated monthly electricity bill exceeds the targeted amount, they can activate AI Energy Mode through SmartThings to proactively save energy. With the cycles that work with AI Energy Mode, the BESPOKE AI Washer saves energy usage by up to 70%,¹⁸ the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo saves energy up to 60% on washing and up to 30% on drying.¹⁹ And the dishwasher uses up to 21% less energy with the Pots & Pans program.²⁰

Visitors at IFA 2024 ― being held in Berlin from September 6 to 10 ― will be able to see Samsung’s new energy-efficient appliances at Samsung’s booth. The Bespoke Dishwasher is currently available in several European countries and the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is set to launch in select European countries in the fourth quarter of this year. The BESPOKE AI Washer will roll out in different European countries early next year.

Samsung Electronics today announced that it is launching the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo to the European market at IFA 2024 in Berlin. First introduced last year at IFA 2023, the all-in-one washer and dryer combo is set to redefine laundry experiences across Europe by combining a washer and dryer into a single, space-efficient appliance that completes washing and drying in one device. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo also leverages AI, heat pump technology and a 7” display to provide a convenient, entertaining laundry experience that also saves energy.

Elevating the Laundry Experience at Home With AI

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is designed to increase space without compromising functionality. This all-in-one combo seamlessly integrates a washer and dryer into a single unit, providing a space-saving and efficient laundry solution with broad functionality. It performs as effectively as two separate machines while conserving valuable space, and more importantly eliminates the need to transfer laundry between those machines after the wash cycle finishes. For users, this means they don’t have to keep checking the wash cycle’s progress in the attempt to prevent unpleasant odors, and can use their time more flexibly.

A key feature of the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is the AI Wash & Dry,¹ which sets a new standard for laundry efficiency. This advanced system uses a range of sensors to optimize both washing and drying for each load, freeing users from having to determine the optimal settings for each cycle. Upon sensing the weight of the laundry, it dispenses the right amount of water and detergent. It also detects the fabric and monitors the level of soiling during the cycle, adjusting wash time and detergent use accordingly. After the wash cycle, the technology optimizes the drying process based on the weight and fabric,² ensuring excellent cleaning and drying results. With AI Wash & Dry, users benefit from a thorough, more efficient³ and personalized laundry experience.

Another benefit the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo brings to the European market is its exceptional energy efficiency. The wash cycle is up to 20% more efficient than the A-grade energy efficiency class threshold,⁴ and the wash and dry cycle combined also meets the A-grade energy efficiency class rating.⁵ These impressive results are achieved through advanced heat pump drying technology, which dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at lower temperatures. In contrast to conventional combination units which use a heater to blow hot air into the drum, Samsung’s heat pump system continuously recycles hot air and optimizes heat transfer by reheating and dehumidifying the hot air through the heat exchanger. This results in the reduction of drying time by up to 60%⁶ and an energy consumption cut of up to 75%,⁷ making it an energy efficient and cost-effective choice for laundry needs. The heat pump method also enhances air circulation, preventing fabric shrinkage and reducing damage to clothing. Furthermore, when the AI Energy Mode⁸ is applied through SmartThings, an additional up to 60% on washing and up to 30% on drying⁹ can be reduced. This is made feasible through reducing heater use, one of the most energy consuming parts of the washing machine, and consequently increasing cycle time.

Seamless, Efficient User Experiences

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo offers an enhanced user experience with the AI Home,¹⁰ an intuitive 7” wide LCD display that serves as a central control hub for laundry, and moreover the entire home. The wide display delivers substantial information about the laundry including cycle details, remaining amount of detergent and energy consumption. When showing cycles, the combo uses machine learning to remember user habits and recommend cycles¹¹ based on periodic and seasonal needs.¹² When the cycle is finished, it provides an energy and water consumption report that can be viewed on the 7-inch LCD display or the SmartThings App.¹³ Additionally, users have clear view of the 3D Map View, which shows all connected appliances within the home and enables users to seamlessly monitor and control them. Users can check if the oven is on, or get the robot vacuum cleaner to start cleaning, all while they are in the laundry room. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo was verified to level ‘Diamond’ under UL Solutions’ Marketing Claim Verification IoT Security Rating, proving its competitiveness in security.

Furthermore, users of the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo can now enjoy the updated Bixby¹⁴ which comes with better understanding capabilities allowing for more responsive interaction than before. Through AI, Bixby can understand complicated and casual conversations, allowing users to give multi-intended, complex commands.¹⁵ Upon using the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, users can ask “What’s the weather like?”, and then say “Start the wash cycle and lower the living room temperature,” and have their requests finished in one sequence. Bixby provides support for Device Q&A as well, assisting users when they have questions about certain features on their appliances. When an error is displayed on the LCD display, users can ask directly what this means, instead of having to look through the user manual or search on their phones. Lastly, the laundry combo has been updated so that it responds without the “Hi Bixby” or “Bixby” wake-up phrases. Users can naturally approach the washing machine, and say ‘Open the washing machine door’, and then get a prompt response or see the action carried out.

Samsung Electronics, today announced that SmartThings, its global connected living platform, has received the international standard ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for information security management systems (ISMSs).

ISO 27001 is the leading global standard for ISMSs and was established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standard provides companies with guidance to manage the risks to information assets systematically and achieve information protection goals.

This certification was received from the British Standards Institution (BSI), a world-renowned standardization and certification organization. To be certified, a company has to meet the standard across a total of 123 detailed items, including policies for information security, access control for information assets and incident response, among others.

With this certification, Samsung has proven that the information protection of its SmartThings Cloud operates in accordance with international standards while providing integrated connected experiences. This official recognition will further boost trust and strengthen business competitiveness — not only with SmartThings users but also partners.

Samsung Electronics today announced it has teamed up with British Gas, enabling customers to better manage their energy use in homes around Britain. This new initiative — an expansion of SmartThings Energy to integrate British Gas’ PeakSave incentive program — provides users to make their home more energy-efficient with less intervention.

“As one of the U.K.’s most trusted brands, British Gas is the perfect fit for us as an innovative technology business,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “Together we are now able to harness SmartThings Energy to provide customers with easier control into optimizing their daily routines and energy use.”

British Gas is the U.K.’s leading supplier of energy and home services, and it has been providing these services to Britain’s homes for over 200 years — having launched in 1812 as the world’s first utility company. In addition to supplying energy to 10 million UK homes and businesses, it is also focused on getting the U.K. to net zero by 2050 through helping customers to reduce their homes’ carbon footprints with a range of energy-efficient home improvements.

One of the core outcomes of the collaborative relationship is the integration of SmartThings Energy’s Auto Demand Response (Auto DR) feature with British Gas’ PeakSave in Great Britain starting from today. PeakSave rewards British Gas customers for shifting their electricity usage during peak hours when demand for electricity is high. Customers can easily take advantage of the program through SmartThings Energy’s support for Auto DR, which automatically adjusts appliances’ operating modes when an event is triggered. Customers can then earn money for using less electricity during the events.

There are a few different methods for activating SmartThings Energy’s Auto DR feature depending on the type of appliance. First, it can automatically turn on the AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy to save extra energy use in the supported appliances.¹ Second, with the power-off function, users can consume less energy from having their appliances turned off when appropriate — this includes certain third-party lights and plugs.² Finally, savings can also be achieved through smart temperature adjustment for EHS (Heatpump) products and third-party thermostats.³ SmartThings Energy even helps users who do not own Auto DR-compatible appliances by sending alerts in the application when a peak event is triggered enabling users to take action in their own ways to save energy when notified.

In addition to Great Britain, Samsung has already rolled out its DR service in a number of other regions — including Seoul, California and New York in 2023. Samsung plans to explore further collaborations and continue to provide multi-faceted programs that contribute towards the Net Zero Home, as it looks to expand the service across the world. Recent achievements along these lines include the energy-efficient residential community in Brobyholm, Sweden announced in November 2023, as well as the Southern Company project unveiled at CES® 2024.

One of the company’s most recent projects¹ includes the Brobyholm smart city near Stockholm, Sweden — in which Samsung is joining hands with industry leaders to create a smart, energy-efficient residential community based on energy independence.

Generating and Storing Energy From Dawn to Dusk

As soon as the sun rises in the morning, an energy-efficient home begins producing and storing energy using advanced solar panels and storage batteries. On clear, sunny days, the smart home system switches on the air conditioning or heating in advance — to save energy later on in the day, once the sun sets or the weather becomes overcast.

Using Samsung’s integrated and expansive multi-device ecosystem SmartThings, users can seamlessly control their home appliances and smart home devices. AI Energy Mode on SmartThings Energy helps users effortlessly save energy throughout their home by automatically optimizing energy usage of appliances.

Smart Energy Management Away From Home

Homeowners no longer have to worry about leaving their pets home alone on hot summer days. SmartThings will automatically turn on the air conditioner and lower the blinds to keep indoor temperatures cool and prevent strong sunlight from entering the house — allowing furry friends to stay comfortable inside. Additionally, home sensors can detect if a window is left open and alert users accordingly to avoid unnecessary energy waste.

Before leaving their home, users can preload their laundry into the washer and set it to run later. After the start button is pressed, SmartThings will determine when energy usage is lowest² in the day and automatically start the cycle. As such, users can manage their energy usage even when they’re not at home.

Wind Down With SmartThings

After returning home from a long day, SmartThings Cooking allows users to easily prepare meals by sending a recipe’s cooking settings straight to the oven. When tidying up after dinner, SmartThings will automatically start the dishwashing cycle at off-peak hours² to help cut costs. Before settling down for the night, users can enjoy a warm shower using pre-heated water from the morning’s surplus energy while SmartThings’ Bedtime Routine automatically adjusts the lights and home appliance settings to create an optimal environment for a restful night of sleep.

With SmartThings Energy, users can view how much energy their home produces and uses as well as other in-depth energy analytics. From laundry to cooking, SmartThings encourages users to complete their household chores using the energy produced by their homes. Samsung is making homes smarter with SmartThings and empowering users to take steps to create their own Net Zero Home.

“Tesla Energy’s customers can now manage and monitor the power status of their homes through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices in addition to the Tesla app, ensuring more access and connectivity,” said Chanwoo Park, EVP and Head of IoT Development Team of Device Platform Center at Samsung Electronics. “This new collaboration is a key milestone for Samsung Electronics in making our solution more widely available beyond home appliances.”

The key consumer benefit of Samsung’s collaboration with Tesla allows SmartThings Energy to connect to Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging and EVs, allowing SmartThings Energy to display information relating to users’ energy production, storage and usage.

Additionally, consumers will be able to better prepare for power disruptions and outages through SmartThings Energy’s ability to sync with the Tesla app’s Powerwall “Storm Watch” function. This means that in the case of extreme weather events such as typhoons or heavy snowfall, users can be alerted through SmartThings on their connected Samsung TVs and mobiles in addition to the Tesla app. What’s more, they can activate AI Energy Mode before and during power outages to extend the remaining backup energy stored in Tesla Powerwall.

Samsung’s utilization of the Tesla API is part of its continual drive toward making substantial progress on the Net Zero Home project and enhancing the multi-device experience of SmartThings users.

We recently published FleetAPI, allowing developers to interact with Powerwall, Solar and Wall Connector in addition to our vehicles. Samsung Electronics today announced a collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group to expand its SmartThings platform to support connected cars, including electric vehicles (EVs). The announcement came after the companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 3 to develop solutions for future lifestyles that fully integrate the smart home and connected cars.

The two companies will work together for the next-generation smart home to connect Samsung’s SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s connected cars, including EVs, to develop the “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services as well as an integrated home energy management service.

The Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services connect the smart home with in-vehicle infotainment systems, allowing for remote control in both directions. Through the SmartThings platform, users will be able to perform a variety of actions pertaining to their cars while at home — starting them, controlling smart air conditioning, opening and closing windows and checking their charging status. And from cars, the control of home appliances such as TVs, air conditioners and EV chargers will also be possible.

“This collaboration will enable communication from Home-to-Car and integrated home energy management services that are optimized for future lifestyles,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “By connecting the SmartThings platform with vehicles, we’ll be able to significantly enhance the customer experience in both the home and the car.”

Users will be able to adjust their environments with SmartThings by simultaneously operating multiple devices — including vehicles — through routines such as “good morning routine” and “arriving home routine.” For example, when a Galaxy smartphone’s morning alarm goes off, the curtains will automatically open, and the lights and television will turn on. When users are ready to go out for work, the user’s car will adjust itself to an ideal temperature. Also, the smartphone and TV screens will display information such as the EV’s remaining battery and driving range.

“This is an opportunity to make the connected car’s Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services more convenient in various fields,” said Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center. “We plan to accelerate our technology development to continuously make global Hyundai and Kia customers’ journeys meaningful.”

The integrated home energy management service will allow users to monitor how much energy is consumed by the connected devices in their homes. Energy information of their EVs and chargers will also be available, enabling users to adjust the optimal time for charging their vehicles. EVs connected to the integrated home energy management service offer the possibility of automatically setting the optimal time for charging by factoring in different pricing by time of day,¹ the power demand response (DR) program,² photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) data,³ and time-specific carbon emissions.⁴

To further strengthen Car-to-Home services, Samsung is working closely with HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. HARMAN’s “Ready Upgrade” is a digital cockpit package product that allows hardware and software upgrades. With Ready Upgrade, users will be able to install SmartThings functions to utilize various Car-to-Home services.

This milestone demonstrates a swift and steady expansion for SmartThings Find, which has registered 100 million more nodes since July 2022, achieving 1.5 times growth in just 10 months. It also means a boost in the efficacy of the device location service, as each opted-in device has the ability to help locate another. The higher the number of devices, the more powerful SmartThings Find becomes for users.

SmartThings Find incorporates enhanced security and privacy features to protect user data and also guard against misuse, and we also are working with the wider industry to support specifications and standards that further enhance security.”

SmartThings Find can quickly locate multiple types of Samsung Galaxy devices, including smartphones, tablets, watches and earbuds. It can also locate Galaxy SmartTag or SmartTag+² devices, which attach to items such as keys or luggage.

Peace of Mind Through Convenience and Security

As SmartThings Find continues to benefit an increasing number of users, security and privacy remain top priorities for Samsung. To ensure sensitive information is safeguarded, SmartThings Find encrypts user data and implements further protection through Samsung Knox, the defense-grade security platform on Samsung Galaxy devices. A device’s location data is only shared with other people with the user’s permission, and the ID of each user’s device changes every 15 minutes and is stored anonymously.

With the “Search for unknown tags near you” feature, Android and iOS users can easily determine if unknown tags are near them manually. This feature can provide a gauge showing the signal strength of the tag, allowing users to know how close the unknown tag is to their current location. If needed, users can designate certain tags as “safe” if they are identified.

For Galaxy users, SmartThings Find can also provide security through its “Unknown tag alerts” feature. This feature alerts users of any unauthorized tracking by sending them a notification if SmartThings Find detects an unknown SmartTag following them. This helps protect users and prevent against the abuse of location tracking services.

To activate the feature, users should locate the Find service within the SmartThings app’s “Life” tab. Within the settings menu, users can toggle “Unknown tag alerts” feature on and off or search for unknown tags near them manually.

Share the Epic: Welcome to a World of Galaxy

On the first floor of the experience hall, visitors were greeted by a display of digital signage in the middle, surrounded by a modern and clean exhibition filled to the brim with Galaxy innovation. Like a contemporary art exhibit, the space was decorated with an array of past generations of Galaxy smartphones. The exhibition space was themed around eco-conscious innovation, highlighting Samsung’s sustainable efforts toward building the foundation for a better tomorrow.

The exhibition showcased each of the recycled materials used for various parts of the Galaxy S23 series and how they were integrated into the final product, so visitors could understand how Samsung is shaping a more sustainable future through eco-conscious innovations.

The Share the Epic experience zone had a space where visitors could view the four color options for the Galaxy S23 series and . Across Green, Lavender, Cream and Phantom Black, all visitors could find a shade that resonated with their unique style. The section also held a service center where visitors could get their questions answered and a space where they could enter giveaway contests.

Capture the Epic: Stunning Shots, Day or Night With Galaxy S23 Series

Visitors were over the moon with excitement for Galaxy’s S23 camera demonstration on the second floor of the Galaxy Experience Space. Snapping a larger-than-life astronaut and a dynamic interstellar background, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200MP camera captured every photo with mind-blowing detail and ultra-high resolution.

With Samsung portrait studio, visitors could treat themselves and their friends to an impromptu photoshoot. The stunning shots were displayed on the walls of the Samsung Portrait Gallery, so every snapshot became a literal work of art.

Visitors also had to option to don their favorite goofy accessory and hit up the Galaxy Photo Booth, which used the Galaxy S23 Ultra to capture and customize the moment with friends.

The Galaxy Experience Space also brought Seoul’s vibrant, neon nightlife to San Francisco. Visitors captured striking photos and video at night like never before with the Galaxy S23 series’ improved Nightography. This was a favorite feature of numerous Galaxy Experience Space visitors, including Bruno Rosa, a journalist at O Globo in Rio, Brazil.

“Nightography is a very interesting and useful feature, especially for better pictures in dark areas,” said Bruno. “Not only if you take a classical picture, but if you take a selfie, you know, it’s very interesting for the customers.”

Nightography is only one of many enhanced camera capabilities on the Galaxy S23 series, which also includes clear and stable video shooting and enhanced selfies.

“I look forward to the camera experience on the new Galaxy S23 Ultra because the 200MP camera capacity on the phone cameras was cool and interesting,” Bruno added.

“The camera is one of the most important features on smartphones today, so I consider that to be a critical part of video editing. I can crop and adjust videos on my Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is hard to do on any other smartphone.”

Play the Epic: Next-Level Gaming With Galaxy S23 Ultra

Under the bright neon lights, the gaming zone between the first and second floors felt like the visitors were competing in an intense esports tournament. While at the Galaxy Experience Space, visitors participated in racing games and experienced the improved gaming performance of the Galaxy S23 series firsthand. With a powerful chipset, intelligent display and improved battery, the Galaxy S23 series brought gaming experiences to the next level.

“I saw an influencer play the racing game on his smartphone, and the screen seemed really fast and smooth,” said Alzbeta Gavendova, a video tech journalist from Slovakia at Mafra Slovakia. “I saw the gamer after he tested the products, and he said that the experience was fun, enjoyable and pleasant.”

Create the Epic: Expanding the Galaxy Ecosystem Through Connectivity

At Galaxy Unpacked 2023, Samsung brought the power of Ultra to its lineup of Galaxy Books with the release of the new Galaxy Book3 Series. Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of the DX (Device eXperience) Division at Samsung Electronics, opened the company’s presence at CES by highlighting Samsung’s strategy to deliver on the promise of the connected experience across the key touchpoints in our lives — in our homes, cars and at work — while also working to build a more sustainable future. The strategy outlined during the press conference focuses on the company’s aim of bringing calm to our connected world so that devices and innovation can genuinely enable better, more personal and more intuitive experiences. To do this, Samsung is focusing on seamlessly connecting devices and designing products to make the everyday use of technology more sustainable.

Samsung Incorporates Sustainability at Every Level

To address our planet’s ongoing challenges, Samsung highlighted how it continues to prioritize the environment through a combination of sustainability targets, innovative product design and strategic partnerships. As a result, by 2050, all of Samsung’s businesses will match their electricity needs with renewable energy and reach net zero carbon emissions. In the nearer term, the DX Division will transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2027 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

To further the company’s sustainability goals, Samsung outlined how Everyday Sustainability — building sustainability features into the company’s most popular products and services — will contribute to a healthier environment. This includes creating more sustainable products through innovative design in materials and energy efficiency.

“By building sustainability into the product experience, we, and the many people around the world who use our products, can contribute to a healthier planet,” said Inhee Chung, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability Center at Samsung. “As a result, some of our most popular products are now some of our most sustainable.”

Samsung announced that many of its TVs and smartphones use recycled materials, including recycled plastic from discarded finishing nets, while the company’s home appliances, memory and 5G radio network chipsets are contributing to energy savings for customers. In addition, Samsung’s connected services, such as SmartThings Energy and AI Energy Mode, are also helping consumers save energy and cut costs while lowering their overall climate impact.

Samsung also shared the stage with Patagonia, a global leader in outdoor clothing, to discuss a partnership to combat the issue of microplastics – the tiny particles often found in clothes and released into oceans, lakes and rivers through the laundry. Vincent Stanley, Director of Philosophy at Patagonia, spoke at the Samsung press conference about how the two companies have developed a new wash technology called the Less Microfiber Cycle,¹ currently being incorporated into Samsung washing machines, which can reduce microplastic release by 54%² during a laundry cycle. Like the Less Microfiber Cycle, Samsung and Patagonia recently developed the new Less Microfiber Filter,³ which reduces microplastic discharge by preventing them from escaping into the ocean at the end of a wash cycle.

Meanwhile, James Kwon, Product Manager, ENERGY STAR for Consumer Electronics at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), announced that Samsung’s connected home experience with SmartThings is the first mass-market Smart Home Energy Management System to earn the prestigious ENERGY STAR SHEMS Certification. Samsung also continues to collaborate with diverse stakeholders in its sustainability efforts. For example, Samsung joined with the Carbon Trust and other technology leaders to develop the industry’s first specification for measuring, accounting for and decarbonizing the emissions associated with connected devices while being used by customers.

A Connected Home and Connected Life Built on Convenience

Samsung detailed plans to fulfill the connected experience today and in the future. During the company’s press conference, Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, highlighted how features like SmartThings Home Monitor and SmartThings Pet Care bring convenience to the connected experience by monitoring and sharing alerts for anything out of the ordinary – for people and pets. Prompted by Samsung Smart TV, these services are some of the many ways Samsung and the connected platform SmartThings are creating an even smarter home.

A key part of this vision is increased interoperability, enabling consumers to connect more of their devices, whether they are Samsung’s or from a partner brand. As the industry looks to bring about a new level of compatibility through the Matter smart home standard, Samsung stated its commitment to this partnership philosophy. SmartThings was one of the first brands to adopt Matter, and Samsung is a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA).

Also, at the CES press conference, Samsung announced the latest smart home innovation, with the SmartThings Station — its first product to have Matter support built-in right from the beginning. It is a convenient, new way to kick-start SmartThings experiences at home and make it easier to interact with connected devices. SmartThings Station turns Samsung’s wireless charger into a smart home hub that can seamlessly transform the state of your home at the touch of a button.⁴

The focus on connected experiences also extended to unveiling new partnerships, including announcing an expanded collaboration with Philips Hue. Jasper Vervoort, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Philips Hue, discussed a new way to sync the content from Samsung TVs with Philips Hue lighting through the Philips Hue Sync TV app, which can be downloaded from the app store on Samsung TVs. This is the first solution to sync lighting and content from Samsung TVs without additional hardware.

With more devices connected than ever, Samsung also detailed how security and privacy innovations will be keys to building connected device ecosystems. The company is taking its device security experiences to the next level with its upcoming solution, Samsung Knox Matrix, which will conveniently and safely sync credentials across devices while protecting sensitive information via multi-layered mutual monitoring enabled by private blockchain technology.

The connected experience is also extending to your commute. Marcus Futterlieb from HARMAN unveiled Samsung and HARMAN’s plans to inject a new level of intelligence, personalization and convenience into the in-cabin experience (ICX). Central to this effort is HARMAN Ready Care, which uses a machine learning algorithm to gather and process data from the car’s sensors to measure driver drowsiness and distraction, providing tailored interventions to mitigate risks and help improve the well-being of the driver.

A Vision for the Future

The company also showcased next-generation innovations and technologies using the latest artificial intelligence (AI). Experiences enabled by Spatial AI — like in the JetBot AI+ — are laying the groundwork for better in-home experiences specific to the dimensions and environment of your space.

Samsung also gave a preview of Relumino Mode, which will come to select 2023 Samsung Neo QLED 8K and 4K TVs this year to make content viewing possible for people with vision impairment. Relumino Mode highlights outlines and improves contrast and color so that content is clearer and easier to enjoy.⁵ In addition, Samsung also displayed a new pair of Relumino glasses, which first debuted at CES 2018 as part of its startup acceleration program C-Lab project, as well as its mobile app to make the visual experience more enjoyable and personalized on every screen.

In celebration of the widespread love for Disney characters, Samsung introduced its Bespoke Disney Collection in August of this year. The collection features Samsung appliances with designs of some of Disney’s most well-loved characters, giving Singapore consumers the ability to add a touch of childhood wonder and nostalgia to their home’s design.

Presenting Unlimited Design Possibilities of Bespoke in South Africa

Samsung’s Bespoke Home Challenge in South Africa will once again take place to showcase the unlimited design possibilities of Bespoke appliances. For two weeks, contestants will build their ideal kitchen and living space. Four finalists have already been selected, and the contest’s winner will be announced early in 2023. The challenge will give a platform to users’ creativity and innovation and allow participants to create their dream home design using the ultra-customizable and sleek Bespoke series.

Also in Korea, Samsung announced the winner of #BESPOKERendezvous, a Bespoke refrigerator design contest. Of the 1,114 works that were submitted, about 28,000 people voted online to select the top ten finalists. Samsung held an onsite #BESPOKERendezvous party and award ceremony where Cho Kyung-min’s water-inspired design, “Floating Rings,” was selected as the final winner.

A New Level of Personalization in the U.S.

In Poland, a Samsung Bespoke refrigerator with a design from French artist Thibaud Hérem was auctioned off at the DESA Unicum, a leading auction house in the country and the eighth-largest auction house in Europe. The auction included various unusual art objects, including furniture, sculptures and home accessories. For the first time in the country, a Samsung Bespoke refrigerator featuring an image of the Chateau de Fontainebleau, a building of great importance to French art and culture, was awarded to the winning bidder and considered a piece of applied art. The proceeds earned from the refrigerator will be donated to Friends of the National Museum in Warsaw Association to build a new collection for the museum and the “Self-Portraits XXI,” a project that supports contemporary Polish artists.

The achievement was based on Samsung’s restored financial performance, which is now near pre-pandemic levels, and higher demand for memory due to an increase in data usage. In 2021, Samsung scored a brand value growth of 20% compared to 2020 and this year, continues the double-digit growth. Samsung first entered the top 10 list in 2012, placing in ninth position, and has managed to rise in the chart each year, reaching sixth place in 2017 and fifth place in 2020.

For instance, Sandstorm Mode was developed for the frequent sand and dust storms in the Middle East. During a sandstorm, simply tap one button on the SmartThings app to enjoy a clean indoor environment. When the Sandstorm Mode is activated, smart blinds block out dust from the outside, an indoor air purifier begins to run and a robot vacuum cleaner begins to tidy up the home.

Prayer Mode was developed for SALAH, which is the prayer of Muslims, observed five times every day at prescribed times. When it becomes time to pray, users will receive a notification on their smartwatch. Prayer Mode activates the smart blinds, adjusts the room’s lighting and turns off the TV. With SmartThings, all products at home can be activated to create an atmosphere to focus on prayer.

Samsung Opens the First SmartThings Experience Zone in the Middle East

The event celebrating the opening of SmartThings Home Dubai on October 6 was attended by more than 100 visitors, including the local media, partner companies, government officials and influencers.

AI Energy Mode, a power-saving feature from Samsung’s SmartThings Energy, is exactly this kind of solution. AI Energy Mode is powered to bring all manner of positive changes and handy solutions to the household, cutting costs and making life smoother at every turn, and its diverse features, such as AI Ecobubble, cover a broad range of household areas.

Using AI-enhanced systems to weigh laundry loads, set defrosting cycles and estimate electricity bills, AI Energy Mode intelligently keeps track of all kinds of variables. Addressing this, Samsung’s refrigerators were designed to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint while optimizing food storage. SmartThings turns the home into an interconnected ecosystem. These devices include Samsung Electronics’ Bespoke Cube Air Purifier, Bespoke Jet Bot AI+, Bespoke Refrigerator and Neo QLED, all of which are applied to SmartThings with HCA Standard.

With the SmartThings app, users can control more than 40 functions in 15 product categories from 13 brands including Samsung Electronics. Conversely, smart home apps from 13 brands can also control various Samsung products. For example, even if the oven, induction and hood in the kitchen are of different brands, it is possible to cook and control it with a single SmartThings app. The 15 product groups consist of air conditioners, air purifiers, Eco Heating System, dishwashers, dryers, freezers, hoods, inductions, ovens, refrigerators, robot vacuum cleaners, TVs, washing machines and more.

Considering the expandability of the existing SmartThings system, it is possible to build a convenient smart home environment by connecting an additional 300 brands of third-party devices, along with the products from the 13 HCA brands to SmartThings.

Updates That Keep the Legacy Devices Working

SmartThings and HCA plan to bring the new interoperable features to global markets within the first half of 2023. In addition, models equipped with Wi-Fi among existing home appliances of HCA member companies can be controlled with a single app, regardless of the brand, through a software update on the app. This is especially important considering the long lifecycles of these large appliances that are part of the home infrastructure. Inside, SmartThings plays a pivotal role in the efficient control of various devices including air conditioners, home appliances, to even the blinds. According to Bixby, the key to this dish is properly roasting the meat. I use the Sensor Cook to sear the tenderloin to medium. The kitchen hood turns on automatically as soon as I start using the induction, so I continue to cook without worrying about any lingering odors in the house. I know I’m not the most talented chef, but I feel great about cooking a perfectly seared steak.

Before I start eating, I open the window to feel the spring breeze. As I plate my meal, SmartThings Cooking recommends me a wine that complements the steak, and the air purifier turns on after analyzing the air coming through the window. After taking pictures of my first successfully cooked meal, I take a sip of wine. It feels as if the fatigue from an exhausting week just melts away.

In the past, the app alerted me that Max frequently barked while alone, but these alerts have decreased after he went through training sessions with the vet. I’m proud of him for doing so well by himself at home. I turn on the lights and TV with the app in the evening so Max doesn’t feel lonely. It looks like I’ll be working overtime again today, so I fill up Max’s dinner in his bowl through a feeder in advance.

Suddenly, a SmartThings Home Care notification pops up from my parents’ house. I turn on my parent’s Jet Bot AI camera to look around, discovering that my mom tripped on the kitchen floor. I immediately call her, and she says that she cried out for help when she fell and couldn’t get up afterward. Thankfully, she says that she wasn’t hurt. As the weather gets warmer, I always bring in the new season with some spring cleaning. I start by planting some flowers and washing my winter blankets. It’s no surprise that many of us spend more time these days working, studying and relaxing at home. But what if there was a way to make that time more comfortable, meaningful and efficient?

In line with the new era of home life that we’re experiencing today, Samsung Electronics has launched the 2022 Smart Monitor M8 — an all-in-one screen that combines key advantages of both a monitor and a smart TV. Allowing users to work and study even without a PC, and enjoy OTT services without a TV, the Smart Monitor M8 has emerged as a must-have item for the new era of working from home and streaming content.

The Smart Monitor M8 is enhanced for users’ convenience and features an even slimmer design than past models. Recently, Samsung Newsroom unboxed the device to see all the new features and details up close. Let’s take a deep dive into the new, all-in-one experience.

Easy To Install

After opening the box, we found that the 32-inch monitor’s neat white color really stands out. The device features a vertical herringbone pattern on its back that creates a sophisticated vibe, as well as an eye-catching attachable camera. The box also includes a simple yet sturdy-looking stand, a USB-C cable, a micro HDMI cable (micro HDMI to HDMI) and a tiny remote control that fits comfortably in your palm — a rare addition for today’s monitors. The monitor comes with a battery-free remote control that conveniently charges via a USB-C port. There are three external ports in all: one micro HDMI port, one upstream USB-C port and one downstream USB-C port. The middle USB-C port also supports 65W charging.

With a simple assortment of items, installation is easy. First, connect the stand’s neck to its base and fasten the bolts at the bottom. Next, connect the assembled stand to the monitor by sliding it into place top edge first and then pushing down until you hear a click. To disassemble the device, simply push the button that disconnects the stand from the monitor.

An Ultra-Slim Design That’s Easy on the Eyes

After assembling the monitor, we immediately noticed just how simple, neat and slim its design really is. Measuring just 11.4mm thin, the device is less than one-third the thickness of the previous version. Its warm white hue gently radiates a soft vibe, complementing any design or space. The organic herringbone pattern on the back adds a sophisticated touch that stands out even more when the monitor is installed in an open room setting.

The monitor’s Height Adjustable Stand (HAS) is particularly convenient. When a monitor is aligned below a user’s eye level, it forces them to constantly look down, which can cause neck pain. The Smart Monitor M8 can not only be tilted at different angles, but also allows users to adjust its height to match their eye level. This means there’s no need to use other items or stands to elevate the screen. The height of the monitor — measured from the surface of the table to the bottom bezel — is 3.6cm at its lowest setting and 15.6cm at its highest setting.

SlimFit Cam Makes Video Calls More Satisfying

The Smart Monitor M8 also comes with a wireless SlimFit Cam (1920×1080, 30p) that makes it perfect for video conferencing and online classes. The camera can be conveniently attached or detached from the monitor at any time. It connects to the device using pogo pins, which means there’s no need for wires. This keeps the monitor’s back uncluttered and streamlined.

Creating the Perfect Home Office Environment, Even Without a PC

In the work-from-anywhere era, it can be quite daunting to manage urgent tasks without access to a PC. The Smart Monitor M8 removes that worry by making it possible to work PC-free as long as there’s a Wi-Fi connection. The device’s Workspace feature combines all work-related services into one screen, while the included Microsoft 365 cloud service¹ allows users to manage files using programs such as Word and PowerPoint even without a PC.

The Smart Monitor M8 also supports Samsung DeX, which allows Galaxy smartphones to support a PC-like experience, making it easy to connect to the monitor and start multitasking. Additionally, the monitor is equipped with Eye Saver Mode and Flicker Free technology to minimize eye strain and prevent flickering.

Enjoy OTT Services to the Fullest

When you feel like sitting back and enjoying a show or movie, the Smart Monitor M8 transforms into a TV thanks to the built-in Smart Hub, which features various OTT services such as Netflix, Disney+, YouTube and more.² You can also view a variety of movies, TV series, sports matches and other content on demand — completely free — using Samsung’s proprietary smart OTT service, Samsung TV Plus.

But that’s not all. The monitor’s included remote control makes finding and managing content a breeze. Other features and enhancements that make the viewing experience even more satisfying include the device’s UHD (3840×2160) resolution, HDR10+ support, 99% sRGB color gamut, 400nit brightness, 2.2 channel stereo speakers and Adaptive Sound+, which automatically analyzes the monitor’s surroundings to optimize sound effects. The result is a rich content experience filled with detailed visuals and sound.

A Home IoT Hub for SmartThings

With built-in support for SmartThings Hub, users can easily connect their IoT devices to their Smart Monitor M8 and monitor their devices at a glance. The SmartThings app’s Map View function allows users to check on the status of devices including Samsung smart home appliances and Bluetooth, IR (infrared spectroscopy) and IoT devices. Plus, with voice recognition technology, users can even control the lights, home appliances and more while in the middle of watching a show or other content.³

The monitor’s built-in microphone enables its Far Field Voice feature, which recognizes voices even from afar, enabling you to control voice assistants like Bixby and Amazon Alexa.⁴ If users talk to Bixby while the monitor is turned off, the Always On Voice feature springs into action, allowing users to interact with Bixby and displaying the information they want on screen. Users can also use Bixby to switch from one app to another and manage videos or home devices.

Samsung Electronics today announced its latest Smart Monitor series, the M8, featuring an upgraded, stylish design. The versatile new M8 delivers Samsung’s iconic slim design in four new colors — Warm White, Sunset Pink, Daylight Blue and Spring Green — available in 32-inches with UHD resolution and a SlimFit Cam.

First launched in November 2020, Samsung’s Smart Monitor series is a family of world’s first do-it-all screens designed for modern day users who demand a product that offers both functionality and entertainment at home. Not only being a traditional monitor, but the M8 also allows users to enjoy a variety of OTT services,¹ including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV via Wi-Fi without having to connect to a PC or TV.

When it comes to style, the Smart Monitor M8 offers both space and work efficiency in an ultra-stylish design. The thinness of the new model is 11.4mm, about three-quarters slimmer than the previous models.

Featuring a sophisticated flat-back design, the M8’s range of colors developing on stylish warm white complements any environment based on the user’s personal preferences.

“We aspired to create a product capable of matching the lifestyles of all kinds of people and preferences,” said Kyounghoon Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Design Team, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics. “The M8’s color palette composed of four different colors was inspired by the theme ‘Shades of Nature’. Gazing at the clear blue sky on a bright sunny day, recharging in the lush green forest, or finally bathing in the glow of a sunset,” he added.

When it comes to productivity, the Smart Monitor M8 has it all. The M8 provides a perfect home office environment without using a PC by connecting to various IT devices through the upgraded Smart Hub. The Workspace User Interface offers all services needed to work on one screen, helping users wirelessly connect to a Windows or Mac PC and efficiently use an extensive range of useful features, including Samsung DeX, Apple AirPlay 2 and Microsoft 365² cloud service, as well as mirroring content from smartphone to the M8.

On top of that, the Smart Monitor M8 has a magnetic and removable SlimFit Cam that can attach to the monitor while keeping desk space neat without any unsightly wires. The SlimFit Cam also features Face Tracking and Auto Zoom functions, swiftly identifying a person’s face when on screen and automatically focusing on the subject. In other words, it can follow and capture an individual speaker, a perfect option for active presentation or livestreaming.

The Smart Monitor M8 has an IoT hub called SmartThings Hub, where users can connect all their IoT devices wirelessly. The SmartThings app allows users to track IoT devices throughout the house easily with the app’s intuitive control panel highlighting all information provided by other devices connected to the M8, including light switch and plug power.³

Equipped with a high-sensitivity Far Field Voice microphone, the assistant controls devices such as Bixby and Amazon Alexa⁴ using voice commands. Additionally, the microphone uses an Always On Voice function, displaying conversation information on screen when Bixby is activated, even if the monitor screen is turned off.

To accompany the monitor’s wide array of features, the display offers adaptive picture technology, enhancing viewer comfort by automatically adjusting display brightness and color temperature. The M8 also includes a height adjustable stand (HAS) and tilt functionality, allowing users to find the perfect position for every project, movie night or study session.

The Smart Monitor M8 earned CES Innovation Awards Honoree from the CTA (Consumer Technology Association) in recognition of a wide array of its display technologies.

As a home controller, it gives you a sweeping view of your entire connected home and allows you to stay on top of everything seamlessly.

From launch, Samsung Home Hub will be able to connect to every product within the SmartThings ecosystem, including your Samsung smart appliances. Soon, you will also have direct connectivity to other devices in your smart home system, such as your lights and door lock system.

Customized Experiences With AI and SmartThings

For the first time ever, a broad array of customized, AI-based SmartThings services have been united and can be controlled from one dedicated device with the Samsung Home Hub. These SmartThings services fall under the categories of Cooking, Clothing Care, Pet, Air, Energy and Home Care Wizard.

To make dinner time easier, SmartThings Cooking allows you to conveniently search for, plan, purchase and prep weekly meals with Family Hub.  When it’s time to do the laundry, SmartThings Clothing Care connects to appliances like the Bespoke Washer and Dryer and the Bespoke AirDresser and provides customized care options based on your garments’ material types, your usage patterns and the current season. What’s more, SmartThings Pet allows you to check in on your pet with the smart camera on the Bespoke Jet Bot AI+ and adjust settings on appliances like the air conditioner to make the environment more comfortable for your pet.

Meanwhile, SmartThings Air can provide automatic dehumidification and connect with air conditioners and air purifiers to manage the air quality in your home according to your preferences. To help you save on energy costs, SmartThings Energy¹ on the Samsung Home Hub analyzes your usage patterns² and uses its AI-equipped power saving mode to help reduce your energy bills. And to stay on top of it all, SmartThings Home Care Wizard monitors all of your smart appliances, sends you notifications when parts need to be replaced and offers guidance if something goes wrong.

Elevated Usability With Bixby

Samsung Home Hub is an exclusive 8.4-inch tablet that can be operated from its dock or used on the go around the home. For voice control, the Samsung Home Hub has two microphones and two speakers to allow you to easily hear notifications and use Bixby voice commands. If you have a question, just ask Bixby. Featuring high-performance microphones, the Samsung Home Hub can pick up verbal commands spoken from the broader room when docked.

In recognition of its innovativeness, Samsung Home Hub received a CES Innovation Award from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) ahead of CES 2022.
