Samsung Electronics announced the launch of its new energy-efficient Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer1 in Europe. The refrigerator was unveiled at ‘Welcome to BESPOKE AI’, a global launch event held at les Pavillon des Étangs in Paris on April 3. It achieves a high energy rating as a product itself, while its Wi-Fi capabilities allow for even further energy savings with SmartThings Energy.

“In response to the reality that energy efficiency is more important to consumers than ever, Samsung is launching a new model for the modern era,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team of Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through our considerable R&D efforts, we’ve been able to provide energy-saving opportunities in addition to the Samsung quality and features that global consumers appreciate. We’re confident that users would take advantages of Samsung’s new refrigerator in their day-to-day lives.”

Notably, the refrigerator has received an energy “A” rating according to EU energy standards, which is for the first time in Samsung’s extra wide bottom mount freezer type. Samsung implements its unique solutions to decrease energy consumption by 55.9% compared to the conventional model.2 Especially the new AI Inverter Compressor3 is a key part to achieve an A grade according to EU energy standards.

The new high-efficient AI Inverter Compressor has been redesigned to increase the radius of the rotating parts which enables its inertia to be higher than the conventional compressor4 by 4.1 times. It means that the compressor can keep the power longer, so it uses less energy while keeping the temperature in the fridge moderate. The compressor also contributes to lowering the noise level by up to 5 times quieter than the conventional model5 thanks to the new control technology.

Additionally, the Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer supports the energy saving mode in SmartThings Energy6 which can reduce energy use by up to 15%.7 The SmartThings AI Energy Mode also allows users to easily check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption, and it even estimates monthly electric bills. If usage exceeds the established estimate, the mode can also proactively save energy.8 Furthermore, it can optimize the compressor speed and defrost cycle frequency, based on usage and surroundings, ensuring that users can enjoy fresher food items for longer.

Samsung also made the model to be competitive both in capacity and design as well. To enhance the capacity benefits of having a refrigerator with a wider width than common type, Samsung applies SpaceMax technology which has been the heritage of Samsung refrigerator. The fridge makes use of thin walls and efficient insulation to increase the storage volume while maintaining consistent temperatures. The extra storage space does not impact the exterior of the refrigerator, either, as the relatively compact size creates more room in users’ homes.

Apart from its performance and storage capabilities, the refrigerator brings a sleek design that makes it a great aesthetic fit for modern homes. It boasts a fully flat door and a recessed handle that grants the refrigerator a harmonious aesthetic. The Gentle Lighting controls brightness and prevents glare as well.

Availability

The energy-efficient Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer will be available in three capacity variants (538L, 508L and 458L) depending on the region, launching in Europe, CIS, the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Canada and Africa.

The refrigerator is expected to be available from April in Europe and other regions sequentially.

For more information on Samsung refrigerators and other home appliances please visit Samsung.com.

1 Stands for a large capacity bottom mount freezer (“BMF”) refrigerator with a width of 70cm or more. Referred to as Extra Wide Fridge Freezer in Europe.

How many times have you thrown away unused food from your refrigerator, or wasted food you simply forgot about because it was out of sight and therefore out of mind? According to the United Nations, roughly one-third of the food produced globally for human consumption is wasted every year. New research from Samsung shows that factors such as not knowing whether to store products in the refrigerator or on the counter and missing expiration dates contribute to this unnecessary wastage.1

Samsung is dedicated to combating food waste through technology and awareness. In order to help improve your food organization skills, here are Samsung’s top tips to help reduce your waste footprint and make the most out of your groceries.

Food Storage Tips for a Longer Shelf Life

Firstly, you should get to know the specific temperature needs of each grocery item. For example, condiments do not require very low temperatures and are best kept on refrigerator door shelves – this will also keep them out of the way and make other more perishable items more visible. Meanwhile, the upper shelves of your refrigerator are ideal for items that need to stay chilled like dairy products, and the lower shelves (the coldest parts of the refrigerator) are best for items that spoil easily.

What’s more, humidity matters just as much as temperature. Samsung recommends storing fruits and vegetables in refrigerator drawers with adjustable humidity settings so as to always maintain optimal conditions.

However, all fruits and vegetables are different, so it’s important to know how each variety should be stored. Unripe avocados, peaches and melon should be stored at room temperature but then kept in the refrigerator once ripe to increase shelf life.2

Finally, raw meat, poultry and fish belong on the lower shelf of the refrigerator. Make sure to keep these wrapped up to prevent food odors and juices from spreading and contaminating other foods, reducing potential food waste.

Storage Tips that Keep Food Fresh for Twice as Long

It is important to be aware of the internal layout of your refrigerator – and a good idea to change up its internal space based on the groceries you buy. You should alter your shelving placements to best suit your groceries so that nothing gets misplaced or forgotten.

Samsung’s new RB7300 refrigerator not only possesses a stylish exterior that blends effortlessly into your kitchen, but also offers generous storage space in a standard depth that evenly cools the inside of the refrigerator from corner to corner.

Samsung’s new RB7300 refrigerator uses SpaceMax special insulation technology, wherein the refrigerator’s walls are slimmer to expand food storage with no increase in external dimensions or change in energy efficiency – meaning that you can store more with no compromises.

Highly perishable items often have specific and varying storage requirements. The RB7300 is equipped with the airtight Crisp Fresh Plus drawer with Humidity Control Dial to protect against moisture loss, increasing humidity up to 80%. This keeps your produce crisper and fresher over an extended period. With strawberry season on its way, you can expect these delectable berries to last up to 2.3 times longer.

For even more storage flexibility, the RB7300 features the Optimal Fresh+ box, a multi-purpose compartment that can be split into two zones with different temperatures—ideal for storing items that require different temperatures, but need to be kept separately, such as meats and vegetables. The left side is cooler, which is the best place to keep meat, fish, bacon and sausages without freezing them so they stay fresh for twice as long*. The divider can also be removed to create a single drawer to store larger items. The RB7300 also offers you peace of mind thanks to its No Frost feature which maintains an even temperature at all times throughout the refrigerator and prevents ice build-up, removing the need for defrosting or unwanted impact on internal storage.

Furthermore, the RB7300 features All-Around Cooling that evenly circulates cool air throughout the refrigerator in order to maintain a consistent temperature. This technology also helps ensure each zone maintains its ideal temperature settings and ensures everything in the refrigerator stays fresh for longer – a helpful boost on your journey to reducing food waste. Additionally, the RB7300’s Power Cool and Power Freeze capabilities cool drinks up to 32% faster and freeze produce up to 35% quicker.

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of a new full smart laundry lineup and an innovative bottom-mount freezer (BMF) refrigerator.

Headlining the new laundry lineup is the WW9800T washing machine equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) features that customize the laundry process to achieve the same powerful wash with less time, energy and effort, as well as Samsung’s EcoBubble and QuickDrive technology. The new range will first launch in the European market and will expand globally later this year.

The new RB7300 refrigerator delivers core cooling performance while offering large, flexible capacity to meet all types of food storage needs. The RB7300 will first launch in Europe in August this year, followed by the CIS region, China, the Middle East, Latin America and Korea.

Also making its first appearance in Europe is Samsung’s flexible solution for a customized kitchen, the Bespoke refrigerator range. First launching in the Nordic region this October, Bespoke’s availability will expand across the European market over the next year.

“We strive to develop home appliances that can boost lifestyle values while maximizing performance, keeping in mind the desires and needs of our consumers,” said Hyesoon Yang, Vice President of Samsung Electronics. “Our new product ranges offer solutions that help consumers lead customized eco-friendly lifestyles and we will continue to direct our efforts toward creating products that enrich daily lives.”

Save Energy, Time, and Effort With a Customized Laundry Process

The new WW9800T washer brings together Samsung’s most powerful technologies that cut down on wash times and energy consumption while providing users with a personalized laundry experience.

Samsung’s revolutionary QuickDrive technology allows the WW9800T to cut washing time by up to 50%, and energy usage by 20%.* The independently moving drum and backplate in the WW9800T allows for more dynamic actions, cleaning garments more thoroughly in less time. Samsung’s Digital Inverter Compressor adds to energy efficiency by utilizing strong magnets for quieter and stronger performance, while using less energy compared to a universal motor.

The new washers also come with Samsung’s EcoBubble technology that maximizes the effect of detergent by turning it into soft bubbles – allowing for faster penetration into fabrics, even in cold water. Colder washes save heating energy, while also protecting the fabrics and colors of garments.

Adding to Samsung’s reliable performance is artificial intelligence, which learns users’ behavioral patterns to recommend cycles and offer a truly personalized laundry experience. With AI Control, the new Samsung washer familiarizes itself with user preferences and combines that knowledge with big data to provide the industry’s first automatic suggestion of wash cycles on its display. Paired with a simple user interface, AI Control eliminates the need for users to scroll through cycles to find the right one, or to input their individualized settings each time. The AI Wash feature uses sensors to detect the laundry load’s weight and soilage, to determine the optimal amount of water and detergent to dispense.

The user convenience extends to the drying process with Auto Cycle Link, which pairs compatible washers and dryers directly to automatically set the best dryer cycle for each load.

All of the appliances in Samsung’s new laundry lineup are compatible with SmartThings, offering users control over laundry settings from their smartphone and features like Laundry Planner and Laundry Recipe to customize laundry routines.

Maximized Storage Space With Freshness that Lasts

Thanks to Samsung’s SpaceMax Technology, the new BMF refrigerator maximizes fridge space without needing wider exterior dimensions that may clash with modern kitchen cabinets. SpaceMax allows the interior walls of the fridge to be much thinner due to its high-efficiency insulation that provides a greater internal capacity of 385L – 18 liters larger than the previous model. The new refrigerator therefore matches the standard 600mm cabinet-depth design while offering more space. This feature is especially welcome now, as grocery-shopping habits are changing; people are reducing trips to the shop to purchase large quantities of groceries at a time, shopping online more, and seeking out ready-to-cook meal kit solutions to minimize food preparation. All these trends lead to the need for greater efficiency when it comes to storage space in refrigerators.

The new Samsung refrigerator is also designed to preserve the freshness of food items twice as long.** Featuring a revolutionary Optimal Fresh+ box that serves as an adjustable drawer, users can choose to either split the drawer into two zones with different temperatures or use it as one. The left side is cooler, so it’s optimized for meat and fish storage, while the right side is great for fruit and vegetables.

The new model ensures that all stored food is properly cooled no matter where it’s placed within the refrigerator. Equipped with the most popular Samsung refrigeration technology features, the new fridge is decked out with All Around Cooling and Metal Cooling for maximum freshness.

The new BMF refrigerator also boasts a contemporary built-in look that introduces an added level of sophistication to any modern kitchen interior. The stainless-steel finish and sleek flat front are representative of Samsung appliances’ simple yet refined design. With a Clean Back that comprises of a smooth metal safety cover for vital coils and cables behind the unit, the BMF refrigerator offers a minimalist approach look and feel.

The compressor for the latest BMF refrigerator automatically adjusts its speed based on cooling demand across seven levels. The advanced compressor thus requires less energy, minimizes noise, and even reduces wear and tear for a durable, long-lasting performance from the refrigerator.

The RB7300 refrigerator and new laundry lineup will be featured at Samsung’s ‘Life Unstoppable’ virtual event on September 2.

*Tested on WW8000T compared with Samsung WW6500K. Saves 50% time and saves 20% energy on Cotton (40℃, half load) cycle with washing performance within ±5%. Based on Intertek data.

**Based on internal testing. Applies when set as MAX mode. Results may vary depending on the level of food freshness, usage conditions and various other factors.

You’re familiar with the situation. You return from the grocery store with bags full of goods but then find out there isn’t enough space in the fridge to hold everything. Try as you might to pull in all your Tetris skills to rearrange your food, you usually find yourself wishing for extra space.

It’s a dilemma that has two options. One choice is to buy fewer items in the weekly shop and then make more trips to the local store throughout the week. But that’s inefficient, and ends up costing more in the long run. The other option is to buy a bigger fridge. The only problem there is the space in the kitchen limits your ability to buy bigger white goods.

The solution that makes the most sense is to opt for a bigger fridge that has the same footprint as your old one. Impossible? No, this is actually an issue refrigerator engineers have been tackling for quite some time.

Samsung SpaceMax Technology

SpaceMax technology is the sum of solutions Samsung engineers have found. One way Samsung works to offer more capacity than the average fridge is by being smarter with the insulation. The insulation in SpaceMax fridges is thinner but efficient.

The technology first made an appearance in Samsung’s 2008 refrigerators developed under project name Guggenheim. The application of thinner insulation helped increase the capacity by an additional 100 litres. Proving its impact on the market, this model is still on sale eight years on.

To get the correct formula for success, it requires an incredible feat in optimization. There’s a need to consider both capacity and energy. For instance, you cannot only make the wall thinner for expanded capacity. Similarly, you can’t just make the walls thicker to achieve better energy efficiency. You have to consider both factors rationally.

SpaceMax works through high efficiency poly-urethane (PU) foam insulation and Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP) working in tandem to increase capacity without compromising on insulation. The results are clear. The freezer wall has gone from 60mm to 55mm, and the fridge wall 45mm to 30mm. The freezer door and fridge door have both slimmed down by 20~25mm and 5~10mm respectively.

Poly-Urethane Foam Insulation with Smaller Cells

Let’s take a closer look at the high efficiency foaming technology used in the insulation. Urethane is a well-known material that fills up the inner wall of the fridge. It’s used in both commercial and general fridges. With an innovative advancement in creating a poly-urethane layer, Samsung was able to decrease the cell size from 200-300㎛ to 100-150㎛. This helped reduce thermal conductivity, which in result improves insulation efficiency by 6.5%.

Vacuum, Arguably the Best Solution for Insulation

While the PU foam layer became better at cutting of heat radiation, Samsung wanted to do more. That’s where the vacuum insulation panel comes in.

A vacuum state, by definition, eliminates matters that conduct heat. (That’s why many thermal bottles have a vacuum layer.) While it would be structurally and economically challenging to build a whole refrigerator wall that is in a vacuum state, Samsung engineers still found a way to add vacuum panels to cut off heat conduction. If you were to dismantle your Samsung refrigerator wall, you would find the panels on the outermost layer of the insulation – right under the surface material, inwardly sealed off by the PU foam.

Although the exact numbers vary between different models, the rule of thumb is that if the thickness of insulation decreases by 1mm, the capacity increases by 10 liters. Continued breakthroughs have meant that average capacity of our fridges has grown over the years. In the 1990s, capacity sat between 200 and 300 liters. By 2014, that figure was 980 liters. Every millimeter counts in the challenge to increase fridge space. And if it means your groceries can slide in with ease, the SpaceMax innovation is worthwhile.
