Samsung India today announced the launch of Galaxy Tab Iris featuring iris-recognition technology that is ready for Aadhaar authentication through an integrated and highly secure biometric device. The Galaxy Tab Iris will provide cashless and paperless services in various applications such as banking, eGovernance services such as passport, taxation, healthcare and education.

The easy-to-use biometric technology, currently incorporated in the Galaxy Tab Iris will help India spread its Digital India vision of providing technology so that every citizen of the country can have access to financial inclusion benefits. The solution will support government benefit programs and enable banks and financial institutions to streamline the process of an individual’s authentication, regardless of language and literacy barriers.

The device is Aadhaar-compliant and STQC-certified. Galaxy Tab Iris is yet another Make for India innovation from Samsung. Embedded in a secure device, the advanced iris-recognition technology will provide an integrated solution that will help to solve the hassles of using separate devices for biometric identification.

It is a breakthrough technology as E-KYC can be carried out in seconds whereas the traditional KYC takes up to 2 to 7 days.

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)

The Galaxy Tab Iris is UIDAI compliant. It can be used for child enrolment program where biometrics of the parent is used to authenticate children for Aadhaar enrolment. The tablet will negate the need for multiple pieces of equipment by providing an integrated solution for the child enrolment process.

Financial Inclusion

Biometrics is playing a major role in the banking sector to improve speed and security. The capability of the Galaxy Tab Iris is to function as an authentication device enabling banks and financial institutions to easily authenticate an individual’s data for account integration with their Aadhaar numbers as well as provide an additional layer of security for banking services such as locker access, fixed deposits, where authentication is required. The iris-recognition technology will also further reduce the need for cumbersome paperwork, allowing people to enrol for banking and financial services in a more efficient paperless manner. With the majority of these processes being digitized with the use of the Galaxy Tab Iris, language and literacy barriers will no longer be an issue, allowing a larger section of the society to available services, promoting inclusion and financial security.

Accessing Citizen Services

The Galaxy Tab Iris can be used for accessing citizen services for purposes ranging from E-PDS (Electronic Public Distribution system), MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural employment Guarantee Act) payments, pension schemes, various subsidy programmes and entitlements distribution. Multiple citizen services such as income tax filing, passport issuance/renewal, car registration, property registration, railway/airport passenger verification can be made paperless with the use of the Aadhaar based Iris technology.

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales was today joined by Dame Joan Collins and Prince’s Trust Ambassadors, including Sir Ben Kingsley, Fearne Cotton and Pixie Lott, at a garden party for more than 5000 of the charity’s supporters and beneficiaries at Buckingham Palace.

To mark the 40th anniversary of The Prince’s Trust, the event included the unveiling of a portrait of His Royal Highness, made from hundreds of images of people whose lives have been touched by the work of his Trust.

The portrait, created by Welsh artist Nathan Wyburn, was presented by Dame Joan, who is an Ambassador of The Trust. The artwork includes photos of some of the young people the charity has supported, fundraisers, volunteers, partners and members of the public who have taken part in some of The Trust’s events over the years.

Sir Ben Kingsley, who has been an Ambassador for The Prince’s Trust for almost 20 years, then presented His Royal Highness with a Digital Book of Memories, a tablet containing photos and memories recorded by young people and supporters of The Prince’s Trust. The memories were gathered from people who are a part of The Trust’s 40 year history during the #partofPT Tour, a nationwide roadshow which took place in the lead up to the garden party.

Some of the memories and pictures included in the Digital Book of Memories, which was developed with support from The Trust’s technology partner Samsung1, are showcased on The Prince’s Trust’s #partofPT website.

In its 40th year, The Trust is calling on people to share stories and images about their involvement with the youth charity on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #partofPT.

Phoebe Young, who was helped by The Trust, was among the young people who met His Royal Highness when the portrait and Digital Book of Memories were presented to him at the garden party.

Phoebe suffered from a health condition from the age of three that resulted in a severe tremor and epileptic seizures, which meant her school days were dominated by bullying, feelings of uselessness and left her struggling to identify with people her own age. Her health, confidence and self-esteem barriers meant that she had no idea what to do with her life.

Phoebe said: “It was amazing to be able to thank The Prince in person for founding such an amazing charity and for believing in young people like me. Life could not be more different for me now since I got involved with The Prince’s Trust – I’m doing a job I love and my confidence has shot up. I’m even giving talks in front of large groups of people which is something I couldn’t have done before, and it’s all thanks to the help I received from The Trust.”

His Royal Highness was also presented with a bronze bust of himself, which was created by sculptress Frances Segelman. The life-like statue, complete with military attire, was created over four separate sittings with HRH between 2013 and 2015 and will be installed at Prince’s Trust House in London.

More than 825,000 young people have been directly supported by the youth charity since 1976 and thousands more have fundraised, volunteered or worked with The Trust over the years.

The Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) has announced it has teamed up with Samsung Electronics to allow its staff to compile and file official league match reports using Samsung tablets.

Until recently, official league staff had to fill out forms by hand and then fax copies to the league official board, meaning they reached their targets long after matches had ended. And when you consider that there are 42 teams in Portugal’s top two professional leagues, this process entailed a pretty significant amount of paperwork.

As of February this year, all that has changed. Samsung has helped the LPFP to digitize its operations with e-Liga, an electronic system for reporting on matches comprising tablets and a custom-made app.

“This application is a technological leap that helps us to provide better service to all clubs and all their fans. It is a truly innovative system that sets us apart from what we did in the past.” said LPFP President Pedro Proença.
