Originally an industry-insider showcase, Paris Fashion Week has evolved into a global luxury spectacle that brings together the most influential leaders, innovators and influencers in the global design and luxury communities.

It was against this backdrop that Samsung Electronics recently partnered with Italian luxury fashion brand Colombo Via Della Spiga for an exclusive showcase of The Wall Luxury – an immersive and customizable display built with Samsung’s modular MicroLED screen technology.

Addressing those in attendance at the showcase, which was held at one of the world’s preeminent luxury hotels, the five-star Hôtel Ritz Paris, Samsung Electronics’ Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business, Hyesung Ha, described what made Paris Fashion Week the perfect setting for the event.

“Paris Fashion week plays a critical role around the world in establishing cultural cues, and in offering a glimpse into upcoming design, fashion and lifestyle trends,” said Ha. “For this reason, we could not think of a more appropriate backdrop to showcase The Wall Luxury, which incorporates Samsung’s most premium and advanced design and display technologies.”

The star-studded event offered leading designers, fashion executives, actors and influencers an opportunity to experience for themselves The Wall’s cutting-edge visual technology and awe-inspiring scale.

“Walking into the room, I couldn’t help but notice this huge screen and its sublime quality,” said Djamila Kerdoun, co-founder and CEO of DK Ambassador, and founder of the International Summit of Fashion. “I had to take a few minutes to admire its artful design and high-resolution images. Working in the events industry, I am particularly attentive to every detail when it comes to digital equipment. For its beauty and for its innovative design, it perfectly fits in … as part of Fashion Week!”

The Wall Luxury represents one of Samsung’s most groundbreaking advancements in display technology. Its immersive modular MicroLED design offers users a world-class viewing experience from the comfort of their home. The Wall also comes in a Professional version that’s geared toward high-end businesses and retail spaces, and, like The Wall Luxury, is completely customizable.

“The extraordinary thing about modularity is that you are no longer locked into a format,” said Didier Beautemps, celebrated architect and Director of Paris-based architecture studio Atelier COS. “In luxury shops, in hotels, in everything we do, it gives us great freedom of design in terms of size and ratio. What truly amazed me is the total absence of reflection, which remains unaffected by the natural light of a room.”

The Wall is designed for those who are constantly seeking exclusive and premium experiences. The display doesn’t just deliver the ultimate in terms of picture quality, it also transforms how digital technology integrates into — and enhances — its environment.

“Modern design is all about expressing uniqueness,” said world-renowned jewelry designer Diana Zhang, who was also in attendance. “We are all different and unique, so we need customizable products to meet every single taste. That’s exactly what Samsung’s done with The Wall Luxury, which can suit every single house with its artful design, customizable frame, and ability to display whatever you like, such as artwork.”

French actress, singer, and radio and television presenter, Sandra Lou, described the display as “Unique and exceptional. I’ve never seen a screen with such details. The images couldn’t be more realistic, especially in terms of colors — amazing.”

The Wall 2019 represents a new era in display innovation: a 219-inch modular Micro LED screen that can be tailored to consumers’ homes and lifestyles. At the center of this stunning display technology are more than 100 Product Planners, UX Designers and Marketers from Samsung’s Visual Display Enterprise Business Team, working together to bring The Wall into homes in 2019. The Newsroom sat down with six individuals from Samsung to learn more about how they created The Wall 2019.

From Left: Hyunkyung Lee, Yoojin Choi, Sangun Yoon, Tara Wang, Sungwan Koo, Heejin Ko

Bringing The Wall into the Home

Since its launch in June 2018, the commercial industry version, The Wall Professional, has been providing viewers with exceptional immersive experiences, situated in large buildings and hotels. Yet ensuring that consumers can enjoy this superior picture quality in the comfort of their own homes presented its own unique challenges.

The team behind The Wall 2019 began by conducting research into popular interior décor trends around the world. “We learnt about the lifestyles of our target consumers and their preferences around the home by looking at images online,” explained UX designer, Heejin Ko.

“We spoke with premium screen installation businesses and held several workshops with them throughout the year to better understand their customers,” said Product Planner, Sangun Yoon. “We aligned our direction with the insights gained from these workshops.”

UX Designer, Yoojin Choi, believes this engagement with the target audience brings something unique to The Wall 2019: “I’m pleased that we were able to listen to our consumers, learn about their lifestyles and incorporate their preferences into the design.”

As the development process gained momentum, the response from consumers was positive. “Our consumers are attracted to the bespoke viewing experience,” said Sungwan Koo, a Product Planner. “Their feedback also helped us to shape the product.”

Set to “Ambient Mode”, a 219-inch The Wall displays “Blue Abstract 2001” by Stephanie Pryor.

Harmonizing with the Home

The Wall 2019 can be transformed into a Feature Wall in the home or blend in seamlessly with its surroundings. A total of seven different categories are available to choose from, allowing users to personalize their screen to what best suits their home.

Alongside its sleek design, The Wall 2019 achieves richer picture quality, thanks to AI-Upscaling technology and a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. The screen is also equipped with enhanced lifestyle features that can transform a room in moments. The customizable UX allows users to create a Feature Wall when the screen is turned off by choosing a picture, painting or piece of framed art that best suits their tastes. Alternatively, a wide variety of premium wall materials, finishes and other décor options are available.

“We consulted with interior designers to ensure that a broad range of styles would be represented,” recalled Choi. “New development stages were devised for this product: from conducting historical research that helped us capture the essence of period design, such as Victorian or Georgian style, to testing the angles of shadows by constructing a temporary wall.”

A dedicated tablet controls what is displayed on the screen, allowing viewers to easily search for content and images. The screen delivers enhanced functionality when turned off, as it can display real-time information such as time, weather updates and ambient brightness.

“It really is a consumer-centric experience,” Yoon elaborated. “We developed The Wall 2019 so that a single side of the room really can be replaced by a screen.”

Tailored Viewing Experience

The Wall 2019 takes personalization to the next level, with modular panels that consumers can position in any size or shape to meet their needs. Choi likens arranging the panels to building with toy blocks, adding: “The modular design allows for an optimal viewing experience. It can render not only the standard 16:9 aspect ratio, but also 21:9, giving consumers greater flexibility.”

The screen can also produce life-like images to scale, for a fully immersive experience. “People can enjoy content without disruption,” said Tara Wang, a Marketer. “We’re planning to introduce a live concert feature so that viewers can feel like they are VIP guests at an event.”

Further heightening customizability, the Zoom-in and Zoom-out feature ensures that all content is displayed at an appropriate size for the viewing distance. “You can control the screen size with just a click of the remote control,” explained Hyunkyung Lee, also a Marketer.

Koo said, “It is important that consumers feel comfortable around their displays.”

As The Wall 2019 captivates consumers with its innovative design and unique features, the team hopes that the TV will evolve into a platform that embraces all content a consumer could desire, free from restrictions of size and space. “The comfort of consumers is our priority,” revealed Koo. “We believe that this can be achieved with the technology at the heart of The Wall 2019.”

Consumers will be able to welcome The Wall 2019 into their homes soon. Samsung Head of Group LED R&D Group, Corporate SVP, Younghun Choi said, “The Wall 2019 has received enhancements in design and usability for the home so that consumers can experience a relaxing environment that has been tailored to their individual lifestyles.”

Plaza Norte, one of the iconic shopping malls in Lima, the capital of Peru, is now home to South America’s largest digital out-of-home (DOOH) LED signage created by Samsung Electronics. The two hundred thousand square meter shopping mall houses major shops and brands. Now the shoppers and visitors can also gather at the square in front of the mall to indulge in watching a major sports game or an exciting cultural event on the mega-sized screen.

The signage at Lima’s Plaza Norte is the latest example of Samsung’s recent LED signage endeavors, following the installation of South Korea’s largest curved SMART LED signage outside of COEX convention center in one of the most bustling areas of Seoul.

Samsung, the No.1 Leader in Global Signage Market

Samsung has held the number one market share of 24.9%1 in the global signage market for nine consecutive years and will likely continue its position as a world leader for the tenth year according to 2018 1Q data released by IHS Markit. The company has continuously developed innovative signage products such as ultra-large-sized LED Signage and The Wall Professional. Back in 2009, Samsung opened up the video wall signage market by introducing the thinnest 7.3mm bezel video wall ever; and in 2015, the company acquired the North American LED commercial display company YESCO Electronics to strengthen its B2B display business.2

Breaking Records of Largest LED Signages

This year, Samsung Electronics is leading the market by focusing on large-sized LED signages, as showcased by record-breaking sizes of LED signages in Korea and Peru. Aside from the newest addition in Lima, Peru, Samsung also installed the longest ribbon-type advanced LED signage in New Zealand’s national stadium Eden Park as part of its official partnership with the Stadium. The curved LED signage outside of AFAS Circustheater, one of the most prominent theaters in the Netherlands, is another case where Samsung installed a large-sized LED signage custom-designed to meet unique needs.

To build the largest DOOH LED signage in South America, Samsung’s Enterprise Business Team collaborated with Plaza Norte’s marketing team for many months to launch the LED screen located on the outside of the Plaza Norte building. Building upon the previous experiences in the field, Samsung’s engineers decided that the ideal LED screen product for the mall would be the XA160F outdoor, which consists of 528 cabinets and has an area of 487 square meters.

The Samsung XA160F SMART LED Signage outdoor display features a 16.0mm pixel pitch for enhanced resolution. The screen also comes with IP65 standards that ensure the screen holds up under all types of weather conditions, and the panels have an anti-UV treatment that prevents deformation and discoloration due to sun exposure. In terms of performance, its design and brightness level deter the interference of light, maintaining levels of 7,700 nits at all times.

As it’s the largest DOOH LED signage in South America, the 487 square-meter screen marks a milestone for Samsung. The company will now strive for even higher goals in product innovation and project development regarding its professional display business.

Samsung Electronics announced today its partnership with the world’s finest audio systems company, Steinway Lyngdorf, for its next generation MicroLED display, ‘The Wall’. Samsung’s impressive display and Steinway Lyngdorf’s state-of-the-art sound system are a perfect combination that provides the ultimate viewing experience. First introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018, The Wall was one of the most talked-about displays of the show and continues to generate buzz within the industry.

“The Wall is Samsung’s latest symbol of true innovation,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through our partnership with Steinway Lyngdorf, we are pioneering a new name in display technology and delivering an unmatched, one-of-a-kind audiovisual experience.”

The first of its kind, The Wall provides superior color purity and accuracy, perfect viewing experience in both light and dark environments, and is more durable than conventional displays, all with less energy consumption. Its modular design is configurable and its 146-inch standard size is customizable without affecting performance or presentation quality.

The first audio company to create a fully digital amplifier in 1998, Steinway Lyngdorf is the perfect audio partner for The Wall. Steinway Lyngdorf’s audio system became the winner of the coveted “Editor’s Choice” award from The Absolute Sound magazine for six consecutive years. Their audio system includes a sound tuning service with RoomPerfect room correction, which is one of the world’s most sophisticated solutions for adapting the sound system to the environment.

Complementing Samsung’s extraordinary visuals is the exquisite sound from Steinway Lyngdorf’s freestanding Steinway & Sons Model B loudspeaker, which is paired with the new Steinway & Sons P100 surround sound processor. The Model B is a full-range dipole speaker finely-crafted to produce pure sound quality and lifelike musicality.

“Both products are made with one ultimate goal – to create the most realistic experience possible with today’s advanced display technology and the leading sound system design,” said Peter Lyngdorf, owner and founder of Steinway Lyngdorf. “By combining a state-of-the-art visual display with a refined audio system, Samsung and Steinway Lyngdorf delivers an enhanced sense of ‘being there’, and no cost was spared to achieve the ultimate experience.”

Samsung and Steinway Lyngdorf are exhibiting Steinway & Sons Model B speaker with The Wall Professional at InfoComm 2018, from June 6th to 8th. The Wall Professional, which is now available for pre-order, is geared toward both commercial and residential markets from premium indoor spaces, to media spaces and private cinemas. As a first step of the partnership, Samsung and Steinway Lyngdorf have presented The Wall Professional and Model B as a perfect bundle solution for customers who need not only the best viewing, but also superior audiovisual system.

– Peter Lyngdorf, founder of Steinway Lyngdorf

Samsung Electronics recently teamed up with the world’s finest audio systems manufacturer Steinway Lyngdorf in search of the ultimate audiovisual experience. The result is a groundbreaking system which combines the dynamic visual qualities of The Wall with Steinway Lyngdorf’s exquisite Model B loudspeakers.

Founded in Denmark in 2005, Steinway Lyngdorf brings together the heritage of Steinway & Sons, the world’s finest piano maker, with the uncompromising vision of audio innovator Peter Lyngdorf to create high-end sound systems. A world-renowned audio engineer, Lyngdorf is responsible for some of the biggest breakthroughs in sound technology. Not only did he create the first fully digital amplifier, the engineer also pioneered Digital Room Compensation technology.

Here’s the story of how Samsung collaborated with Steinway Lyngdorf to create a one-of-a-kind audiovisual system.

Peter Lyngdorf, founder of Steinway Lyngdorf

A Shared Passion for Innovation

When Samsung unveiled The Wall earlier this year, it marked a key milestone in the company’s development of top-end displays. While the Wall has superior color display with true black and HDR capabilities, and it is designed and manufactured through a host of cutting-edge technology innovations, one final piece of the puzzle was missing.

“The Wall requires an independent audio solution that can match the visual experience regardless of the acoustic setting,” says Alex Szabo (below) from Samsung Electronics’ Enterprise Product Marketing Group. “Being a great and prestigious audio brand, we thought Steinway Lyngdorf was the natural choice for collaboration may our clients require high end stereo of full surround solutions.”

Samsung and Steinway Lyngdorf both share the same desire to push the envelop in their respective fields, which meant that a common language was already in place for a dynamic partnership to flourish.

As Lyngdorf explains, “Our systems do not require extensive acoustical modifications to the space to allow for great sound. We wanted to use our scientific research to make a range of audio solutions to complement the great visual quality of The Wall.”

In Search of Perfection

After hours of testing and fine-tuning, both companies finally settled on the ultimate audio companion for The Wall – Steinway Lyngdorf’s Model B speakers.

“The Model B system is controlled by our P100 multichannel processor,” Lyngdorf says. “This means the speakers can handle all audio parameters to produce optimum sound.”

Equipped with Steinway Lyngdorf’s RoomPerfect system, the Model B speakers can be adjusted to maximize the acoustics of any room, regardless of its size or shape, and allows for artificial calibration as well.

“Our unique technologies in sound management not only provide realistic sounds even in the most challenging environments but also allows for flexibility in installation,” says Lyngdorf. “They can be virtually invisible or become a part of a room’s décor without compromising on sound quality.

Enhanced Sense of Immersion

Viewers experiencing The Wall and Steinway Lyngdorf Model B system

Spending time with The Wall and Steinway Lyngdorf speakers (such as the Model B) in person is the only way to truly appreciate the monumental creation of Samsung’s collaboration with Steinway Lyngdorf. Surrounded by life-like images and sound, viewers will feel like they are in the heart of the action, enveloped in a dazzling audiovisual spectacle unlike any other.

“The result of the collaboration shows that exceptional sound and image together add up to far more than the sum of the parts,” says Lyngdorf.

The UHD 146” Wall Professional will be exhibited alongside a pair of matt black color (designed specifically for the collaboration) Model B speakers at Infocomm 2018 from 6 to 8 June. The audiovisual system is now available for pre-order.

Samsung today announced at InfoComm 2018 the introduction of The Wall Professional – a modular, MicroLED display that can extend to hundreds of inches in size while delivering impressive black color, brightness, and contrast in any commercial setting. InfoComm 2018 attendees are invited to “See the Greatness” of The Wall as well as other display products and digital signage solutions at the Samsung booth (#C3127).
“Through the launch of The Wall Professional, we are changing the way users interact and the way businesses display content by delivering a one-of-a-kind visual experience,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This first-of-its-kind display is just one product in our broad InfoComm 2018 line-up aimed at providing a state-of-the-art, next-generation visual experience. We look forward to sharing our vision for what’s next with our customers, partners, and peers at the world’s largest event for AV(audio visual) professionals.”

The Wall Professional: The Future of Display Technology

A business-ready variation of one of CES 2018’s most talked-about consumer displays, The Wall Professional’s modular design is configurable and customizable. The stylish design of The Wall will modernize any corporate lobby, museum, gallery or luxury retail space. The Wall Professional is highly reliable and efficient. In any arrangement, the display’s HDR10+ technology and MicroLED pixel modules produce unparalleled peak brightness of 1600nit, excellent color presentation and brilliant imagery free of color filters or backlighting

Great Black – Black is the essence of detail. The Wall forms the essence of black. The fusion of an exceptionally black base with a specialized ultra-low reflection black technology delivers pure black levels for unparalleled contrast and immaculate detail.
