Ultimately, when it comes to creating technologies that help users streamline their mobile lives, UX (user experience) marks the spot.

Take the Galaxy S8 and S8+. When designing its latest flagships, Samsung went to great lengths to ensure that the UX behind their groundbreaking, bezel-less designs would foster convenient and intuitive interactions. The result of the company’s efforts is a seamless interface that allows users to navigate the devices’ immersive displays with ease and take full advantage of their powerful features.

The tips and functions outlined below offer simple ways for users to further amplify their Galaxy S8’s convenience and get more out of their smartphone experience.

Get to Know the Navigation Bar

The navigation bar that houses the Galaxy S8’s Home, Back and Recents buttons has a few tricks up its sleeve, including allowing users to bypass their device’s Lock screen and instantly access the Home screen.

After activating the Unlock with Home button feature via Settings > Display > Navigation bar, a hard press of the square Home button from the Always On Display will unlock the device (a swiping motion is not required), while a double-tap will pull up the lock screen. The navigation bar’s settings also allow users to customize the Home button’s sensitivity to avoid unwanted presses.

Users may hide the navigation bar in apps where it does not automatically disappear or fix it to their screen by toggling the Show and Hide button, which appears on the bar’s far left side. The bar’s configuration may also be customized.

Using certain apps and functions may cause the navigation bar to disappear entirely. In those instances, users may navigate back to the Home screen by hard-pressing on the Home button’s usual location, and may access the navigation bar by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

Take Advantage of the Edge Screen

The Edge panels in the Galaxy S8’s Edge screen offer access to apps, news and key functions with a simple swipe of the side of the screen. Users may customize their Edge panel selection and add more apps and shortcuts that work for them.

The Edge screen’s Edge lighting feature adds additional convenience, notifying users of incoming messages by illuminating the Infinity Display’s edges. This allows notifications to be visible even when the device is facing down, and creates an intuitive means to notify users of messages without disrupting their enjoyment of videos, games and apps.

Users may access the Edge screen’s settings by tapping Settings > Display > Edge screen.

Create Convenient Reminders

Find an interesting article that you’d like to get back to later? The Galaxy S8 allows users to conveniently save URLs using its Reminder function.

With the website pulled up, simply access your browser’s sharing options and tap on the Reminder icon. Webpage URLs are automatically saved, and users may additionally select exactly when they’d like to receive their notification.

The Galaxy S8 also allows users to create reminders based on texts. When viewing a conversation in the Messages app, long-press your selected message until the Message options menu appears and choose Send to Reminder. The message will automatically be saved to the Reminder app, and you’ll also be able to specify if/when you would like the reminder to appear.

In addition, the Galaxy S8 allows users to pin reminders to its Always On Display, making them visible at all times. To do so, open the Reminder app, tap on the reminder that you would like to display and select Pin to Always On Display.

Power Button and Sensor Shortcuts

Sometimes taking the perfect photo requires one to be quick on the draw with their camera.

To help users capture more of their special moments, the Galaxy S8’s camera launches instantly with a double-press of the power key. The camera’s zoom function is similarly seamless, allowing users to easily zoom in or out by dragging the white shutter button to the right or left.

In addition to unlocking the device, the Galaxy S8’s fingerprint sensor allows users to open apps and manage key functions. A simple swipe down or up will show or hide the notification panel, while swiping up on the sensor from the Home screen will launch the Samsung Pay app. The function may be found under Settings > Advanced features > Finger sensor gestures.

In a meeting and can’t answer the phone? With the Galaxy S8, you can politely decline incoming calls with preset text messages.

The Quick Reply feature activates with a two-second touch of the device’s heart-rate sensor and allows users to send a customized response that suits their needs. The function may be found under Settings > Display > Edge screen > Edge lighting > More Options > Quick reply.

Step Up Your Screenshot Game

The Galaxy S8 allows users to snap quick screenshots via a variety of convenient ways.

Users have the option to press and hold the ‘volume down’ and power buttons simultaneously, swipe the screen from one side to the other with the side of their palm, or utilize the Galaxy S8’s Smart Select feature, which is found via the Edge screen and allows you to select an area of the display to capture as an image or GIF.

Located under Settings > Advanced features > Smart capture, scroll capture is another useful option that’s designed to help users snap more complete screenshots. The function appears after a screenshot has been taken and allows for all of an app or page’s scrollable content to be included in the image.

Get More Done with Snap Window

The Galaxy S8’s new Snap Window feature allows users to select a portion of the most recently opened app to pin to the top of their screen.

This means that, for instance, a user may keep an eye on a video or constantly updated content such as stock prices and headlines via the top of their screen while using the remainder of the display to send an email, browse the web or manage other apps.

Activate the feature by pulling up your recent apps and tapping on the function’s corresponding button.

A Fun Way to Unlock Your Phone

After registering their irises for biometric verification, Galaxy S8 users have the option to select a fun mask or background to display when the security feature is activated.

Available designs may be found under Settings > Lock screen and security > Iris scanner > Preview screen mask.

Sharing Links with Samsung Cloud

Samsung Cloud offers users an effortless means to share large video clips and reams of pictures by creating a URL that lets others access your shared media.

The function maintains full picture quality and supports files of up to 1GB in size. Users may save up to 2GB of content per day. After two days, the files are deleted from Samsung’s servers.

To utilize the feature, select the photo or video that you would like to share in the Gallery app, tap Share and choose Link Sharing. The subsequent screen will allow you to select the app you would like to use to send your link.

Users may also provide others with access to shared content by sending a code. Those who receive the code will be able to punch it in to Samsung’s Link Sharing app and instantly view and download the shared files.

Halloween is nearly upon us, that spooky fall time for dressing up in crazy costumes, carving pumpkins and celebrating ghosts, witches and all the creepy creatures of the night. One of the most popular activities is trick or treating, what kids go door-to-door collecting tasty treats from their neighbors.

With that tradition in mind, here is a collection of tricks and treats for your Samsung mobile devices that you might find … bewitching.

Galaxy Note5

Trick: A screen that’s on, even when it’s off

From the moment you eject the S Pen from the Galaxy Note5, you know you’re getting a totally different mobile experience. The S Pen is more versatile and useful than ever, with a truly natural writing feel and an array of fun, smart features, like Action Memo, Smart Select and Screen Write. Air View even lets you preview content without touching the screen, just by hovering the S Pen above the display. But one of the most useful new features on the Galaxy Note5 is the ability to write notes on the screen even when the screen has not been turned on. Screen Off Memo fires up automatically whenever you deploy the S Pen and the screen is off, giving you the ability to write directly on the darkened display and then save your message. It’s a ghostly good trick.

Treat: Customize your Air Command

The defining aspect of the Galaxy Note5 is its S Pen, which gives users unprecedented functionality and control over their content. Popping the S Pen out from the phone automatically brings up the Air Command menu, where you can take a memo, select images or write right on the screen. But you can also change up to three of the Air Command slots, choosing the apps that are just right for you. Your favorite web browser, a calculator, navigator or whatever you use the most and want right at your fingertips. It’s a treat that will have you howling at the moon.

Galaxy S6 edge+

Trick: Reduce screen size and one-handed mode

People love the 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screens of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note5, both of which are bright and big, great for using all sorts of media. But sometimes that much screen space can be too much, which is why they also offer a reduced screen mode. Just tap the Home button three times quickly, and the entire screen shrinks down to a smaller size. You can even choose whether you want that screen to be on the left side or the right side of the phone. It’s a fiendishly useful trick.

Treat: Information stream

Sometimes you need to stay on top of some breaking news or information—the latest headlines, sports scores, or financial information—but you are in a meeting or other event and don’t want to be conspicuous about checking. Fortunately, the Galaxy S6 edge+ has Information stream, which allows you to keep updates along the phone’s signature curved edge, without turning on the main screen. Select different feeds and get instant news, whatever you like, then the edge will light up with your stream, while the main screen stays dark as night.

Gear S2

Trick: Better battery control

The Gear S2 has a powerful battery than can last a couple of days on a single charge (depending on how you use it, of course). But sometimes you can get caught without a charges and with power running low. Which is why the Gear S2 offers a Power saving mode, to help your device last a while longer. Just choose the Settings function and scroll down the Power saving. The Gear S2 will switch to greyscale home screen and disable most special functions. That way, if you use a lot of apps during the day, it won’t come back to haunt you.

Treat: S Health

The Gear S2 is a great looking, stylish wearable, but with health-related apps like S Health, it can also help you take care of yourself. With S Health, the Gear S2 automatically tracks activity—or inactivity. Anytime you’re moving around, the Gear S2 knows it and sends encouraging messages. Or if you are sitting still at your desk for too long, it will suggest maybe it’s time to stand up, stretch your bones and get the blood pumping.

Sometimes, the best date night is one where you and your special someone stay at home enjoying the simpler things in life. Not only is dating-in convenient, affordable and low-pressure, at-home dates can be easy to execute, too. With a little help from Samsung, and a touch of creativity, you can effortlessly show off your romantic side and impress your special someone. Read on to find out how.

Plan & Prepare

Because the date is in the comfort of your own home, you might be tempted to play it by ear, or put off planning to the last minute. But by procrastinating, you may come across as unprepared, a trait no one admires. Treat your date at home in the same way you would a special concert or sporting event, as your relationship is far more important than any front row ticket.

A day before the big date, take care of the essentials. Pick up groceries, hire a babysitter if necessary, brainstorm a few date activities and be sure to thoroughly clean up. If you (and your home) are really smart, let the appliances — like Samsung’s POWERbot — do the cleaning for you while you take care of the more important stuff, like selecting a good wine for the evening. It’s okay if you’re not a clean freak, but your date will feel more comfortable in a nice, tidy space.

Set the Mood

Now that the planning is out of the way, it’s time to set the mood. The right atmosphere can help transform your home from an everyday living space into a romantic love den, while showing your partner that you care enough to put time and effort into something for him or her.

By playing a romantic, but not overly cheesy, soundtrack throughout the house (use the Wireless Audio-360 to create a wireless surround sound system), and lighting a few candles, an intimate mood can be set to relax and impress one’s date. Go easy on the clichés — rose petals are so outdated — and be sure to customize the mood to the preferences and personality of your date.

Finally, the way you look is the visual cue for how the night will advance. Show your date that you’re dressed to impress, or keep things casual in jeans and a t-shirt. When you look your best and feel comfortable, you’ll be confident and conversation will flow naturally.

Heat Things Up

Cooking your date’s favorite meal will definitely earn you some bonus points, but an even better alternative is cooking together, a shared experience that will make the two of you feel more connected, and creates an opportunity to learn more about each other.

Pizza or cookies (or both, if using the Chef Collection Flex Dual Oven) are great foods that couples can easily prepare together. Whatever you decide to cook, just remember to relax and don’t fret over perfecting the dish; this activity is meant to be fun.

And of course, don’t forget the drinks! Freshly squeezed juice and seasonal cocktails are perfect complements to any meal, and can quickly be chilled (should one forget to do so beforehand) in the Chef Collection refrigerator, thanks to its Fridge in Freezer storage and customizable temperature settings.

The Main Event

After dinner, be sure to keep the date going with a bit of entertainment. The Samsung Smart TV with Tizen is a great device to do so. The TV offers an endless array of content, and with the Video on Demand service, an entire library of romantic comedies is just a click away.

Alternatively, couples can make a small wager and battle it out in a video game tournament using PlayStation Now. A bit of friendly competition encourages flirtatious teasing, and even if you both aren’t very good, you can laugh at your mutual shortcomings.

Be creative with your at-home date, but more importantly, be yourself. Chances are, you (and your special someone) may never want to set foot outside again!

Summer is the season for the fine art of barbecue. The best grill master knows that preparing your meats before a big cookout is the key to satisfied dinner guests. Whether you are firing up the grill to cook meat, poultry or fish/seafood, it’s important to carefully consider the marinade you prepare ahead of time. A good marinade will both tenderize the meat and give it a great flavor. So while you are considering the cut of meat and the type of fire (charcoal? gas?), you should also carefully consider the ingredients in your marinade.

However, it’s important to remember that meat may not need a marinade at all. If you’ve decided to spend money on the finest cut of beef with perfect marbling, then you don’t need to infuse it with other flavors. Just a little salt and pepper will provide all the seasoning that is needed. However, tougher cuts of steak like flank, sirloin or skirt will benefit from soaking in a marinade before cooking.

The first ingredient in your marinade should be something acidic – vinegar, wine, or something citrusy like lemon juice will help to tenderize the meat. A tough piece of meat will benefit from a marinating for about 24 hours, however a delicate piece of fish might need no more than an hour. Adding oil will give the meat moisture, as well as flavor, especially if it’s particularly strong-tasting, like olive oil.

The other key component is salt, which can be used for seasoning but can also be used to draw water out of the meat. Finally, it’s time to add your herbs and spices, such as garlic, oregano, thyme, cumin and red pepper. Other options to consider including in your arsenal are hot sauces, sweet steak sauces or soy sauce. Sweet ingredients can give your marinade a caramelized texture when the meat is cooked.

When you are designing your own marinade, you will only perfect it by trial and error. So it’s worth checking out some recipes online to get ideas and see what marinade ingredients tend to go together well. For example, a typical Middle Eastern preparation might include ingredients such as yogurt, olive oil, garlic and onion, whereas an Asian-style chicken or beef marinade may typically include ingredients such as rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, chili sauce and scallions.

Whether it is meat, poultry or fish, you must refrigerate the dish while it is marinating, even if it is only for a short time. Bacteria can start to grow when food is left on the countertop. Samsung’s Chef Collection is equipped with the Chef Pantry, a section of the fridge that is designed for keeping meat and fish chilled at optimal temperatures. So once you’ve prepared your marinade, take the stainless steel Chef Pan out of the fridge, apply the marinade to meat, poultry or fish, be sure to cover it and pop it back into your Chef Collection refrigerator’s Chef Pantry.

It’s important to note that you should not marinade a dish in any metal container unless it is stainless steel. After you have started cooking, the marinade should be discarded. Don’t baste the food with the leftover marinade as this can lead to cross contamination.

Once the meat is on the grill you can slide the Chef Pan directly into your dishwasher. That’s one of the great things about the Chef Collection refrigerator: it was designed to make things easy for home chefs who are serious about preparing great meals that taste great.

Some might argue that an artist is only as good as his tools. If that is true, then Samsung is helping turn every day home cooks into culinary master chefs with its Chef Collection of kitchen appliances. One of the most advanced sets of kitchen appliances on the market, each piece is as technologically advanced as it is elegantly beautiful. One of the stand-out pieces within the set is the Chef Collection oven with Gourmet Vapor Technology. Here are some tips for making delicious meals to share with family and friends.

Bake Better Bread

Everyone knows that texture plays an important role in the taste of a dish. Overcooking results in dry, tough and rubbery texture. The Gourmet Vapor Technology helps maintain the best moisture control. The first ovens used a conventional stationary heat source, usually radiating from the top of the oven. Next came convection ovens that circulated heat, using a fan in the back of the oven. Samsung is the first company to launch Gourmet Vapor Technology in household ovens. It distributes steam from seven different holes in the cavity ensuring optimal texture and taste. It also cooks more quickly, evenly and smoothly. Bread baked in the Chef Collection oven reaches the desired browning of the crust 33% faster than traditional convection ovens. The crust is half as thick, making it crispier. The loaf of bread itself is lighter and fluffier than bread baked in conventional convection ovens. Bake perfect, bakery-worthy baguettes in no time.

Juicy Chicken in Less Time

With the Gourmet Vapor Technology home cooks can create the best tasting roast chicken while reducing overall cooking time. And the built-in meat probe ensures proper internal temperature of meats is reached, every time. The temperature is displayed digitally on the front color LCD touchscreen, eliminating the need to constantly check, probe and cut meat. This also means the cooking temperature of the oven remains consistent if the door is not opened repeatedly.

Keep Food Warm Until the Whole Party Arrives

Speaking of dinner parties, someone always arrives a little late. And while your guests get antsy, your culinary creations get cold and lose their luster. With Chef Collection Warming Drawer, make sure all dishes stay the perfect temperature until you’re ready to serve, like you just took it out of the oven. You can also use the warmer drawer to keep dessert warm while you serve entrees and sides. It’s perfect for restaurant-like meal service, right in your home.

Create Creamy Meringue, Like a Michelin Chef

With Chef Collection oven’s Wi-Fi functionality, you can download recipes from your favorite Michelin starred chefs to your smart device. Find the recipe you want to try and follow the easy step-by-step directions. Use Smarter Control to monitor cooking mode, cooking time and temperature. Get notifications when preheating is finished, when cooking time is complete and internal meat temperatures. You can remotely check and change settings and even turn the oven off. With downloadable recipes, take the leap from home cook to master chef.

Get It Right the First Time, Every Time

The Chef Collection oven comes with 80 pre-set auto recipes. Simply choose the dish, and clear instructions on the color LCD touchscreen display ensure the most optimal oven settings for the best results every time. Automated settings and useful information help you elevate your culinary skills and help you cook like a professional.

Just like with all of Samsung’s products, design is just as important as the technology. The Chef Collection oven is sleek and fits into any existing kitchen décor. Its beautiful design and its advanced Gourmet Vapor Technology, inspired by professional chefs, help make all home cooks feel like professionals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e83D852_7no

The Recipe

First, to prepare the black cod, slice the chorizo into very thin slices. Place on each block of cod. Wrap in plastic wrap and set aside while it forms its shape.

Next, cook bell peppers in the Chef Collection FlexDuo oven at 210C or 410F for 15 minutes. Peel, remove seeds, and blend each pepper separately. Pass each pepper puree through a sieve.

Unwrap cod and place in a non-stick pan in the oven, baking for 5 minutes at 180C or 356F.

To prepare the shellfish, cook in a pot with a glass of white wine. Add a spoonful of finely chopped onions and parsley. Season with pepper and cook for 10 minutes. Drain the juice into a jar and add fresh cream and butter. Foam into a creamy shellfish juice.

Plating: Draw a line of each pepper coulis on the plate. Place the cod, cooked white beans and shellfish on the plate. Add a small dash of olive oil. Surround the cod with the shellfish juice. Finally, decorate with paprika and herbs.

Club des Chef Tips and Tools

Magnetic Knob for easy cleaning

In this three-part video series, two culinary masters, chefs Daniel Boulud and Eric Trochon, demonstrate how easy it is to recreate their favorite dishes using Samsung Chef Collection appliances.

Meet the Chef

Chef Eric Trochon is a founding member of Club des Chefs. Born and trained in France, he is the chef-owner of Semilla restaurant in Paris. Chef Trochon is considered a top professional in many roles, including chef, culinary consultant, food stylist and professor, at the widely-renowned culinary arts institute, Ferrandi Paris.

In 2011, chef Trochon was awarded the prestigious title of MOF (Meilleur Ouvrier de France, or “one of the best craftsmen in France”). This title is a rare and supreme honor given only to the best craftsmen of several skilled professions at the top of their careers, following a rigorous national competition. After winning the title of MOF, a recipient holds the title for the rest of their life.

Although chef Trochon is an expert and exceptional technician in traditional French culinary arts, he has a passion for exploring global cuisine. He is known for combining his expert techniques in French cuisine with flavors from around the world. Most recently, chef Trochon has taken interest in Korean cuisine, particularly focusing on bringing out the natural flavors of its ingredients. He believes that cooking for people is not only about offering the best quality food, but also offering the best food to feed the soul.

The Dish

In the following video, chef Trochon shares his classic French dessert, shortbread with grapefruit cream. The dessert preparation includes the shortbread, a grapefruit cream curd, pomelo pulp garnish and grapefruit and lemon juice glaze.

Watch as chef Trochon presents one of his favorite recipes using the Samsung Chef Collection:

The Recipe

The shortbread is made easily using flour, yeast, egg yolks, sugar, salt, soft butter, ginger powder and almond powder. After kneading dough, store in Samsung Chef Collection freezer to harden.

The cream is made of grapefruit juice, lemon juice and sugar. Curd is a preparation that usually includes dairy and an acidic liquid, such as lemon juice. For chef Trochon’s grapefruit cream curd, he uses custard powder, eggs and vanilla. After mixing, boil while whisking on Samsung Chef Collection Range to thicken. He finishes his cream curd with butter and gelatin. Place in a pastry pocket for easy application.

Next, peel the pomelo and separate the pulp for garnish. Set aside. Use Samsung Chef Collection Flex Duo Oven to bake the shortbread.

To prepare the glaze, julienne the grapefruit skin, immerse in water, bring to a boil and drain. Prepare a pan of syrup. Drop the drained julienne grapefruit skin in the syrup, cooking on a low simmer for 30 minutes. Let the syrup cool.

To plate, place your shortbread on a plate. Cover the shortbread with drops of grapefruit cream. Top with pomelo pulp. Garnish with candied glaze and fresh lime zest.

In this three part series, two members of this elite group will demonstrate how to utilize Samsung Chef Collection appliances to easily recreate some of their favorite culinary delights, so that you can enjoy the simple pleasure of cooking, eating and sharing with the people you love in the comfort of your home.

Meet the Chef

In part one of our “In the Kitchen with the Club des Chefs” series, we introduce to you Daniel Boulud, one of America’s leading culinary authorities, and one of the most revered French chefs in New York. There, he is the chef and owner of several restaurants, including Manhattan’s renowned, Michelin-starred Daniel, among others spread across London, Miami and Singapore. He is most praised for the contemporary appeal he adds to passionate dishes rooted in French tradition.

The Dish

A native of Lyon, France, Chef Boulud was raised on his family’s farm in the village of Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu, and remains inspired by the natural flow of the seasons and dishes influenced by the finest, freshest ingredients. Growing up, he spent a lot of time in the kitchen with his grandmother, no doubt a gastronome herself, learning traditional cooking techniques. It’s no surprise, then, that one of the chef’s favorite dishes is Poulet Grand-Mère (Grandmother’s Chicken), a savory fricassée, which he notes is as easy to make as it is delicious.

The Recipe

Directions

To begin, stuff the chicken with aromatic herbs, such as thyme, sage and garlic. Secure strings around the wings and legs to give it a nice shape for roasting and season it all over with salt and pepper. In a Dutch oven, roast the chicken on medium-high heat until the skin becomes golden brown. Add the bacon cubes and the remainder of the vegetables to the pot. While the chicken is roasting, split some mushrooms. Then, put the chicken in the oven and let it roast on the bone.

When the chicken is ready, remove it and set it aside to rest. Carve the bird and serve it with roasted vegetables and a fresh watercress salad.

Club des Chef Tips and Tools

Chef Boulud notes that anyone can cook, so long as they have the freshest ingredients and the right tools, which is where the thoughtfully designed Samsung Chef Collection FlexDuo 30″ Self-Cleaning Slide-In Double Oven Electric Convection Range comes into play.

The 5.8 cubic feet single oven splits into two with the Smart Divider. Two temperature controls cook dishes separately with no noticeable transfer of aroma or taste, which means you can roast both the chicken and vegetables (or perhaps even dessert) at different temperatures at the same time. Additionally, the oven’s temperature probe keeps you notified of the internal temperature of cooking foods, so that your Poulet Grand-Mère will come out tender and perfectly cooked every time, just like Grandma’s. Bon appétit!
