Samsung Electronics today announced that the HDR10+ Adaptive feature will be supported in Samsung TVs, which improves the HDR10+ viewing experience in customers’ homes regardless of the lighting conditions. HDR10+ Adaptive supports Filmmaker Mode and adapts to brighter rooms so customers can enjoy a true cinematic experience with HDR10+ movies and television programs in any environment at home. HDR10+ Adaptive will launch globally with Samsung’s upcoming QLED TV products.

While viewing HDR content is typically optimal in a darkened environment, customers’ viewing environments may vary greatly depending on a wide array of factors, including room lighting, time of day, and proximity to windows. The HDR10+ Adaptive feature supports dynamic scene-by-scene optimization, following guidelines from the HDR10+ LLC, and can now adjust to any room lighting condition, further enhancing the HDR experience. This feature utilizes the TV’s light sensor and ensures that the screen brings to life the creative intent without any loss of details or contrast. All Prime Video HDR content is automatically delivered in HDR10+.

HDR10+ Adaptive on Samsung QLED TVs also supports Filmmaker Mode, a display setting that Samsung – as a member of the UHD Alliance – developed in partnership with filmmakers, studios and consumer electronics manufacturers. Samsung and Amazon Prime Video teamed up to enable Filmmaker Mode and HDR10+ Adaptive for Prime Video customers.

“We are always looking for new features and innovations that can help improve the customer experience,” said BA Winston, Global Head of Video Playback and Delivery at Amazon Prime Video. “With HDR10+ and Filmmaker mode, Prime Video content is optimized regardless of the viewing environment and customers can enjoy movies and TV shows the way the filmmakers intended.”

More contents are becoming available in HDR10+ with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment (UPHE) and Samsung extending its technology partnership to include even more HDR10+ catalogues and new titles for distribution on OTT services around the world.

“As consumers spend more time at home, Samsung has been looking for ways to enrich consumers’ entertainment experience in the comfort of their homes,” said Younghun Choi, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are delighted to offer smart picture quality solutions that will enhance consumers’ at-home HDR viewing experience, bringing original-quality cinematic experience to our consumers around the world.”

“Samsung has demonstrated exceptional commitment in developing HDR10+ technology and bringing the industry together in support,” said Michael Aaronson, Senior Vice President, Digital Distribution, UPHE. “We are pleased to further expand our partnership with Samsung as we work to bring more titles into this advanced in-home viewing ecosystem to movie audiences worldwide.”

UHD titles available on Prime Video also include HDR10+ so all Prime Video customers can enjoy the improved HDR experience with most Samsung QLED TVs regardless of room lighting conditions.

The results of DisplayMate Technologies’ comprehensive evaluation of the Galaxy S9’s Infinity Display are in. The world’s leading evaluator of screens has concluded that Samsung’s latest flagship is equipped with “the best performing smartphone display that we have ever tested,” and has awarded the device its highest-ever “Excellent A+” grade.

Although the Galaxy S9’s 3K Quad HD+ OLED Infinity Display features the same size (5.8 inches) and resolution (2960 x 1440) as last year’s Galaxy S8, the new device matches or sets many smartphone display performance records, and outpaces its predecessor in several measures including color accuracy, brightness, outdoor visibility and reflectivity.

Each of the Infinity Display’s screen modes demonstrates record-setting absolute color accuracy, which means that depicted colors are visually indistinguishable from perfect. In Cinema Mode, the Galaxy S9 has been rated to 0.7 JNCD (Just Noticeable Color Difference), a measurement that refers to the bare minimum color difference that the human eye can perceive. The display also features a wide native color gamut – 113 percent of DCI-P3 and 141 percent of sRGB/Rec. 709*; the largest that DisplayMate has ever measured in a smartphone or tablet.

The Galaxy S9 offers users the best in terms of image quality and brightness, and features an enhanced High Brightness Mode that allows it to produce vibrant visuals when users need them, such as when they’re under direct sunlight or in other environments with lots of ambient light. The display’s peak brightness of 1,130 nits is approximately 10.7 percent brighter than that of the Galaxy S8.

The Galaxy S9 also features a record-setting reflectance score – another measure that’s crucial when it comes to evaluating screen readability, picture quality and color accuracy in bright settings. DisplayMate’s evaluation has found that the display’s screen reflectance level is just 4.4 percent, which is the lowest that the firm has ever measured in a smartphone.

The device is additionally certified by the UHD Alliance for Mobile HDR Premium, which means that the Galaxy S9 is capable of playing the same dynamic 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range) content as 4K UHD premium TVs.

The Galaxy S9 will be available in stores beginning on March 16.

*The Galaxy S9 features four screen modes calibrated for different content, applications and user preferences. These measurements reflect the devices’ default screen mode, ‘Adaptive Display’.

Samsung Electronics announced today that its 2017 QLED TV line-up has been certified by the UHD Alliance (UHDA) as ULTRA HD PREMIUM. The certification encompasses the 2017 QLED TV portfolio, including the Q9, Q8 and Q7 models.

“It’s an honor to receive this stamp of approval from the UHD Alliance,” said MS Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung. “We are proud to continue offering our consumers a premium Ultra HD home entertainment experience with our 2017 QLED TV lineup.”

The UHDA’s ULTRA HD PREMIUM logo identifies products and services that meet or exceed strict performance levels for 4K resolution, high-dynamic range (HDR), and wide color spectrum. These specifications enable televisions, content and other external devices, such as UHD Blu-ray players, to fully display content in its richest form, allowing the consumer to experience a more accurate content experience from their living rooms.

Announced at CES 2017, the QLED TV lineup features dramatically improved color performance displaying the DCI-P3* color space accurately and – in another world first for Samsung – can reproduce 100 percent color volume. This means Samsung’s new QLED TVs can express all colors at any level of brightness – with even the subtlest differences visible at the QLED’s peak luminance – exceeding UHDA requirements. This breakthrough is a result of Samsung’s adoption of a new metal Quantum Dot material, making it possible for the TV to express a significantly improved range of color with much greater detail compared to conventional TVs. With picture quality a top priority for consumers around the world, Samsung’s 2017 QLED TVs represent yet another leap forward in home entertainment.

The UHDA is a global coalition comprised of more than 50 member companies – including leading film studios, consumer electronics manufacturers and content distributors – and was established to foster and promote the Ultra HD ecosystem and benefits of Ultra HD technology. The Alliance is also focused on helping consumers build a seamless, integrated and high-quality UHD ecosystem from end-to-end. Premium UHD devices and content will be clearly marked so consumers can easily identify them in-store.

Samsung Electronics unveiled today a shared vision with 20th Century Fox (Fox) to further elevate the consumer viewing experience, and the TV industry at large.

A new video released by the company highlights its longstanding partnership with industry leading film studio and underlines the importance of TV in today’s larger content ecosystem, featuring executives from both Samsung and Fox who share their collective vision for the future.

“Fox and Samsung have been working collaboratively for many years on new technologies,” said Danny Kaye, executive vice president, global research and technology strategy, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “Over the years, we’ve formed a deep mutual respect and now we’re taking that collaboration to a whole new level.”

The partnership between Samsung and Fox began in 2013, when Samsung joined the Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA) — a consortium of companies in the entertainment and storage space that aim to provide consumers with new ways to access high-quality digital programming across devices — and did so with the backing of Fox. Samsung has since launched a UHD download service with Fox content, as well as an expanded service that includes High Dynamic Range (HDR) titles, which is available to consumers globally.

“Our goal is to offer the best consumer experience while preserving the filmmaker’s intent with no distortion, no compromises,” said Won Jin Lee, executive vice president, service business team, visual display at Samsung Electronics. “We are answering industry, market and user demand with this continued partnership.”

In 2014, Samsung launched its first ever branded “Video Pack” that provided users with five titles licensed by the studio. That same year, Samsung and Fox established the Fox Innovation Lab, with the first project integrating accessible content into Samsung’s Ultra High Definition (UHD) TVs.

“We share a common goal of delivering the best user experience at home,” said Won Jin Lee. “Our complimentary skill sets have helped us continuously raise the bar for ourselves, as well as the industry.”

In 2015, Samsung and Fox, among other industry leaders, co-announced the UHD Alliance — a coalition of companies united to set the bar for next generation video entertainment by establishing standards to support innovation in video technologies. The Alliance is dedicated to furthering this commitment in 2016 and beyond.
