Motion Lighting Is A Standard Out-Of-The-Box Feature, Not A Test-Cheat

Earlier today, The Guardian newspaper in the UK suggested that one of the power saving modes used in our TVs has been designed for regulatory lab tests, rather than real world viewing. We firmly reject this suggestion, and in the interests of full transparency we have decided to publish the following information:

Motion lighting helps save energy in real life

The feature mentioned in the article is called ‘motion lighting’, which reduces power consumption by reducing screen brightness when the picture on the screen is in motion. It is a standard out-of-the-box feature, which is switched on when the customer takes delivery of their TV, and remains on whenever the customer chooses to watch their TV in Standard viewing mode.

Motion lighting is not a test-cheat

Motion lighting is not a setting that only activates during compliance testing. On the contrary, it is a default setting which works both in the lab and at home; delivering energy savings and helping us to reduce our environmental impact.

Motion lighting was introduced in 2011 across all our TVs as part of a range of features we have developed to help reduce the environmental impact of our TV technology. We are immensely proud of these technologies and look forward to innovating further in this area.

If the customer chooses to alter their display settings or switch to a different mode then the feature switches off, which gives our customers a simple choice of whether they choose to prioritise power efficiency or performance in their TV. The setting is explained in all of our instruction manuals, and also features on our website – click here for more details.

Samsung Electronics announced that its new line of SmartThings products are available to purchase in the UK, with the new Starter Kit, upgraded Hub and sensors available both in store and online at Curry’s PC World as well as online at Samsung.com

The Samsung SmartThings Starter Kit has everything you need to monitor, control and secure your home from anywhere. Once you’ve set up your Starter Kit, SmartThings allows you to add any of the hundreds of compatible smart devices to enhance your home.

The Samsung SmartThings Starter Kit contains:

a SmartThings Hub to connect with smart sensors, lights, locks, cameras and more

a SmartThings Multi Sensor to monitor whether doors, windows, drawers or your garage are open or closed

a SmartThings Motion Sensor to monitor movement in your home

a SmartThings Presence Sensor to know when people, pets and cars arrive or leave home

a SmartThings Power Outlet to control lights, electronics and small appliances

The new Samsung SmartThings Hub is equipped with a powerful processor that enables video monitoring, a battery backup that lasts up to 10 hours in case of a power outage, and a local app engine for optimised performance and the ability to operate without an Internet connection. The collection of small Samsung SmartThings sensors have been designed with a sleek, contemporary look.

The Hub’s video monitoring capability, launching in beta and compatible with select Samsung and D-Link cameras, is unique in that it allows people to improve peace of mind while maintaining their privacy. A livestream can be accessed at any time, but video is only captured and stored when an unexpected event, such as motion by the front door, is detected. With this new feature, SmartThings is introducing a solution called Smart Home Monitor, which provides unified access and control against intrusion, smoke and fire, leaks and floods, and other common household issues by delivering real-time text alerts and video clip notifications from multiple cameras to the user or select contacts via the SmartThings app. Intelligent buffering enables video clip recording to start prior to the event so users can see what caused the incident.

With the free Samsung SmartThings app, you can receive important notifications about what’s happening at home, control your smart devices with a simple tap and choreograph your home to react to your unique preferences. The app is available for download from today for Android and iOS.

Pricing for the Samsung SmartThings Starter Kit, as well as individual elements of the Starter Kit which can be bought separately, is as follows:

Samsung SmartThings Starter Kit: £199

SmartThings Multi Sensor: £30

SmartThings Motion Sensor: £30

SmartThings Presence Sensor: £30

SmartThings Power Outlet: £45

SmartThings Moisture Sensor (not sold as part of Starter Kit): £30

Samsung Electronics marked the European launch of its Wireless Audio 360 speakers at an intimate event at London’s Victoria House with DJ sets from Gorgon City and Laura Whitmore. With music streamed through the new speakers, the event demonstrated how Samsung is set to revolutionize the audio experience with a range of products that give people the freedom to listen to their music wherever they want, however they want.

At the launch, Samsung set out its ambition to transform the audio market for music fans who want more freedom from their audio devices by creating a more dynamic, surround sound audio experience where the sweet-spot is everywhere. Developed at Samsung’s new state-of-the-art audio lab in California where a dedicated team has been brought together to create this innovative range, the Wireless Audio 360 range delivers a unique, 360-degree sound experience through the use of Samsung’s patented ring radiator technology.

This pioneering technology creates an omnidirectional movement that immerses entire rooms in sound, so wherever people are in the room they will experience the same incredible audio letting them listen to music the way they want. With portable and standing models available and seamless connectivity features, coupled with technology that changes the way sound is delivered, it is a range built for music fans of today who want an independent music experience.

Commenting on the launch, Guy Kinnell, Vice President TV & AV, Samsung UK & Ireland said; “Over the past few years we have seen a dramatic change to the way people listen to music. We know they no longer want to be restricted by their audio devices but instead want a device that gives them the freedom to choose how and where they listen to their music. We believe our new range of speakers reflects what people want from music products now and in the future. Technology has revolutionized the way we consume entertainment and we believe our Wireless Audio 360 speakers are the next phase in this revolution.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjuPh2qI8ts

At this European showcase for the new range, Samsung also premiered exclusive content commissioned to bring to life the 360 sound concept and ring radiator technology. ‘The 360 Sound Experiment’ was created by artistic collective Artisan and produced by Little Dot Studios, with the stunning installation bringing to life the idea of a room filled 360 with sound using color and light. Set to music composed by Aiden Lavelle who has worked with Gorillaz and Massive Attack, and directed by Ross Cairns, the installation uses light beams to visualize the movement and frequencies of sound through space, demonstrating how 360 sound offers the best audio experience of any speaker on the market today.

Combining this exciting new sound technology with a premium look and feel, Samsung’s new offering provides an unrivalled, immersive audio experience. Two models are available—the R7, a standing model with a deeper bass, and the portable R6. Both models seamlessly connect to TVs, sound bars and mobile devices to create the ultimate at home entertainment system. The Samsung Wireless Audio 360 range is available at retailers including John Lewis and Richer Sounds.

Speaking after the event, Gorgon City commented; “Playing through the Wireless Audio 360 speakers was fantastic – it was a gig with a difference and the crowd were great. This is a great piece of kit for people who love their music and we’re thrilled to be a part of the launch.”

Samsung Electronics announced that Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge received eco-friendly certificates from four major markets, the US, the UK, Russia and Brazil, respectively. Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge have been recognized not just for the performance based on the state-of-the-art technology, but also for the aspects that care environment.

The two flagship smartphones received Sustainability Product Certification (SPC) from the US-based safety testing and certification organization, UL (Underwriters Laboratories). In the UK, world-renowned Carbon Trust honored the two smartphones with CO2 Measured Label.

In particular, Samsung gained Platinum certification, the highest grade, from UL by meeting a series of rigorous criteria -on toxic material, energy efficiency, recyclability of product and packaging, as well as the manufacturer’s social responsibility practices.

Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have also been awarded Vitality Leaf certification from the Ecological Union, Russia’s leading environmental certification organization, and COLIBRI, a Brazilian environmental quality label, from Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT).

Packages of the two smartphones are made with 100 percent recycled paper as well as they satisfy criteria on toxic material. In addition, at the very early stage of the product development, Samsung considered environmental impacts. For example, 20 percent of the plastic in battery charger is made from recycled plastic, and soy ink is used to print the letters on the packages and manuals, instead of using petroleum solvents.

Samsung also continuously strives to create an eco-friendly system by applying advanced technology for energy efficiency, including fast charging and Ultra Power Saving mode.

Samsung has set up “Eco-Design process” since 2004 and requires environmental validation at the product development stage. Every product developed in Samsung has to be validated and named eco-grade.

As a result, as of March this year, 3,131 of Samsung products obtained environmental labels from environmental organizations in 14 countries, being recognized as a world’s leading eco-friendly manufacturer.

“Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge show excellent performance and fabulous design, as well as Samsung’s commitment for the environment” said Samsung official, and “Samsung will continue its efforts for developing environmentally friendly products, and also plan to expand the share of the recognized eco-products.”
