Samsung Electronics today announced that an expanded number of products in its Digital Appliances Business have been verified to level ‘Diamond’ under UL Solutions’ Marketing Claim Verification IoT Security Rating Program. Following the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+1 ― which was the first product in the home appliances industry to earn the ‘Diamond’ level from UL Solutions ― and Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI,2 three products were verified to the same level recently. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo3 and the Air to Water Heat Pump4 acquired the Verification in June, and the Bespoke Slide-in Range5 followed in July. As a result, Samsung now possesses five ‘Diamond’ level verifications by UL Solutions, the largest number in the home appliances industry.

“As AI becomes more advanced, security is naturally becoming more important in terms of protecting users’ privacy,” said Miyoung Yoo, EVP and Head of the Software Development Team, Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “The result shows that Samsung has proved its competitiveness in security based on Samsung Knox. We will continue to prioritize security so that consumers can enjoy the AI capabilities of our products in a safer environment.”

UL Solutions’ IoT Security Rating Program

UL Solutions is a leading global safety science company that evaluates hundreds of marketing claims each year. One of their services, the UL Solutions’ IoT Security Rating Program, verifies the security capabilities of smart home products.

UL Solutions differentiates security capability performance using five levels – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Each level requires rigorous testing, and of them, the highest ‘Diamond’ level is only given after products pass tests evaluating the ability to detect malicious software modulation, prevent illegal access attempts and anonymize user data. Especially, the products that achieve this highest ‘Diamond’ level differentiate themselves from level ‘Platinum’ products in their ability to detect unknown potential vulnerabilities and operate programs for early detection of security vulnerabilities, as well.

Products Newly Verified to Level ‘Diamond’

Samsung Electronics today announced that its new all-in-one robot vacuum cleaner, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI,1 and its Family Hub Refrigerators2 have been verified to level ‘Diamond’ by UL Solutions for their IoT security capabilities. UL Solutions Inc., is a leading global safety science company that evaluates hundreds of marketing claims each year, and one of their services, the UL Verified IoT Device Security Rating process verifies smart home devices for hacking risks and security levels. The Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ became the first in the home appliance industry to gain the ‘Diamond’ level, and other Family Hub models and the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI also achieved the same verification.

UL Solutions divides the level of performance into 5 levels — Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Each level requires rigorous testing, and of them, the highest ‘Diamond’ level is only given after products pass tests evaluating the ability to detect malicious software modulation, prevent illegal access attempts, and anonymize user data. Especially, the products that achieve this highest level differentiate from level ‘Platinum’ in that they must have the ability to test unknown potential vulnerabilities, and operate programs for early detection of security vulnerabilities as well.

The importance of IoT security grows as Samsung builds its products to be more intelligent, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) features to a host of product lineups and connecting them through SmartThings. Samsung’s devices are built to communicate with each other so that with one signal, multiple devices smartly adjust themselves.

“AI is becoming a bigger part of our everyday lives, and this is especially apparent in the fact that it is being applied to home appliances. With that being the case, security is naturally becoming more important,” said Miyoung Yoo, EVP and Head of the Software Development Team, Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “We at Samsung are putting a huge amount of effort into making sure that data security enhancements come hand-in-hand with our technological advancements. The secure environment we provide will allow our customers to truly enjoy the connected experience enabled by AI.”

To establish this interconnected home environment, each device — as well as data transmitted between devices, must be protected. All Samsung home appliances are protected by ‘Samsung Knox,’ a unique series of security principles, and all WiFi-enabled products come with integrated circuit (IC) chips that encrypt data, protecting it from breaches and attacks. ‘Knox Matrix,’ a security solution designed to protect interconnected devices then strengthens security one step further. It secures sensitive information across multiple devices by supporting end-to-end encryption (E2EE) technology to encrypt all shared and synchronized data, and enables devices to intelligently monitor each other for security threats and send notifications to other devices in the event that one is attacked.

The two new products boast AI features designed to make the lives of users easier. The Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI comes with AI Object Recognition,3 an intelligent technology that recognizes humans,4 pets,5 and even hard-to-see items such as phone cables so that users do not have to do a “first screening clean-up” before running the vacuum. It also comes with Spatial Recognition6 technology that automatically draws the layout of the home, and recommends names for each section. Finally, the AI Floor Detect7 is feature that recognizes when the vacuum is on a carpet, determines the depth of the carpet and prevents it from getting wet by lifting the mop pads up into the vacuum when mopping

The newest edition of the Family Hub series, the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+8 also comes with multiple AI functions that serve users’ individual needs. ‘AI Vision Inside,’9 for one, intelligently recognizes fresh food items going in and out of the fridge and automatically creates a food list. ‘SmartThings Food’ then recommends recipes based on the available ingredients. Users can easily get ideas of what to eat, and also save food from going to waste because they can utilize various ingredients they have on hand.

1 VR7M*97****
2 RF**DB99****, RF**DB95****, RF**DG9H****, available in North and South America, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, India, Australia, Korea
3 Object recognition may be affected by an object’s shape or the environmental conditions. Only certain object types can be recognized. Example items: air conditioner (stand type), refrigerator, BESPOKE (refrigerator/dishwasher), TV, washing machine/dryer, air purifier, AirDresser, sofa, bed, bookshelf, table, pet excrement, electrical cable, towel/sock, cup, glass, bottle, bowl, vase, floor mat, rug, coat rack, shoes, pedestal, scales, power extension, furniture with a crossbar, furniture legs, wheeled chair, pet fur ball, smartphone cable, stain, door step, and doorway. A Wi-Fi connection and Samsung account are required.
4 It only recognizes a human presence based on generic visual indicators, and cannot identify individual people. The recognition capabilities may be limited when a person’s entire body cannot be seen. A Wi-Fi connection and Samsung account are required.
5 Only dogs and cats can be recognized. It only recognizes a pet presence based on generic visual indicators, and cannot identify individual pets. A Wi-Fi connection and Samsung account are required. The recognition capabilities may be limited by the posture or position of a pet. The ability to recognize your pet may vary depending on the type of animal and the living environment.
6 Only certain spaces can be recognized. Example spaces: Kitchen, Living room, and ordinary room. A Wi-Fi connection and Samsung account are required.
7 Based on our deep learning model trained using predefined set of data and may yield incomplete or incorrect information. New datasets may be introduced to our learning model from time to time to enhance its accuracy.
8 A Wi-Fi connection and a Samsung account are required. You must use a same log-in account between the devices.
9 As of April 2024, AI Vision Inside can recognize 33 fresh food items like fruits and vegetables. If the food is not recognizable, it may be listed as unknown item. AI Vision Inside cannot identify or list any food items in the fridge door bins or freezer. It recognizes food items based on deep learning models, which may be updated periodically to improve accuracy.

Samsung Electronics today announced that its 2022 QLED and Lifestyle TVs have been recognized by leading global certification institutes for eye safety and color technology. The news comes as the company announced its newest QLED and Lifestyle TVs at CES 2022.

The 2022 Samsung Lifestyle TVs won the ‘Eye Care’ Certification from Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) in Germany, one of Europe’s largest technical-scientific associations with more than 36,000 members. The certification applies to Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TV models including The Frame, The Serif and The Sero. The screens are evaluated on various categories, including ‘Safety’, ‘Gentle to the eyes’, flicker level, uniformity and color fidelity.

(From left) Seokwoo Yong, EVP and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics and Cherif Kedir, President & CEO of VDE

The new Lifestyle TVs were assessed for safety from blue light emission and melatonin inhibition levels based on a light hazard classification method set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TVs satisfy the IEC’s standards for screen flickering, which can cause eye fatigue or headache for viewers. They were also recognized for excellence in color fidelity and picture quality uniformity, both elements of which contribute to eye comfort level while watching TV.

(From left) Seokwoo Yong, EVP and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics and Wyatt Brannan, Vice President of North America Consumer, Medical & Information Technology of UL

Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TVs1 were also verified as ‘Glare-Free’ by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading independent safety science company. UL’s verification validates the ‘Glare-Free’ claim by assessing the products against Unified Glare Rating (UGR) testing standard set by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). Samsung’s new Lifestyle TV models use a new Matte Display with anti-glare, anti-reflection and anti-fingerprint properties to deliver the optimal brightness and provide the best picture quality without glare.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that five of its memory products achieved global recognition for successfully reducing its carbon emission, while 20 additional memory products received carbon footprint certification. Samsung’s automotive LED packages also had their carbon footprint verification, a first in the industry for automotive LED packages, further expanding Samsung’s portfolio of eco-conscious ‘green chips’.

“It is exciting to see our environmentally sustainable efforts receiving global acknowledgements,” said Seong-dai Jang, Senior Vice President and Head of DS Corporate Sustainability Management Office at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue our path towards a sustainable future with ‘greener’ chips enabled by Samsung’s cutting-edge technology.”

Five Memory Products Achieve the Carbon Trust ‘Reducing CO2’ Certification

Five Samsung memory products – HBM2E (8GB), GDDR6 (8Gb), UFS 3.1 (512GB), Portable SSD T7 (1TB), microSD EVO Select (128GB) – recently earned ‘Reducing CO2’ labels from the Carbon Trust. The previous versions of the five products had received the ‘CO2 Measured’ certification from the Carbon Trust last year. The Carbon Trust recently also certified the product carbon footprints of 20 memory products1 by giving them the ‘CO2 Measured’ product carbon footprint label.

The Carbon Trust is an independent and expert partner of organizations that advises businesses on their opportunities in a sustainable, low-carbon world. The Carbon Trust also certifies the environmental footprint of organizations, supply chains and products.

The Reducing CO2 label certifies that a product’s carbon emission has decreased. Samsung was able to cut the carbon emission of the five memory products through enhanced production efficiency. This means that less electricity and raw materials were used per chip. For the Portable SSD T7 (1TB), Samsung used environmentally sustainable paper instead of plastic as packaging material to minimize the carbon footprint of the product.

Samsung estimates that the volume of carbon emissions reduced from the five products, after their release until July 2021, amounts to approximately 680,000 metric tons of CO2, which is equivalent to 11.3 million urban tree seedlings grown for ten years or the greenhouse gas emitted from 149,000 cars driven for one year.

Before a product can be certified for carbon reduction, its current carbon footprint must be validated in order to set the starting line for measuring carbon footprint changes. The CO2 Measured label verifies the current carbon emission of the product with a globally recognized specification (PAS 2050). Thus, the 20 Samsung memory products with the CO2 Measured label has now set the benchmark for future carbon reduction.

“We have certified five of Samsung’s memory chip products with the CO2 Reducing label, and are pleased to bring on board 20 more products with the CO2 Measured label,” said Hugh Jones, Managing Director at the Carbon Trust Advisory. “We hope that Samsung’s efforts could spread out to the entire semiconductor industry, so that the industry can continue its journey towards a more sustainable future.”

Carbon Footprint of C-series 3W Automotive LEDs Verified by UL

Four C-series 3W Automotive LED packages manufactured by Samsung – Gen3 (third generation) 3W White, Gen3 3W Amber, Gen2 (second generation) 3W White and Gen2 3W Amber – received verification of their carbon footprint to ISO 14064-3 by UL.

UL, the global safety science leader, provides testing, inspection and certification, advisory and risk management services, decision-making tools, training and business intelligence offerings to help customers based in more than 100 countries solve critical business challenges, achieve sustainability goals and prepare for future opportunities.

Since Samsung’s C-series 3W Automotive LED packages are energy efficient products that draw less power but produces more light output, they reduce carbon emissions of cars by improving energy efficiency and ensure longer driving range for electric vehicles in a single charge.

“UL congratulates Samsung for pursuing carbon footprint verification for their four C-series 3W Automotive LED packages, which will help automotive manufacturers select products with transparent, verified information about their environmental footprint,” said Doug Lockard, Vice President and General Manager of UL’s Retail and Consumer Products group. “By understanding the carbon impact of products, manufacturers like Samsung can work to reduce those impacts and improve the environmental performance of products over time.”

Samsung Electronics today announced that all models1 of The Terrace TV, the premium product line designed for outdoor lifestyles, have become the first in the TV industry to be verified for outdoor visibility performance.

This verification comes from U.S.-based Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global independent safety science organization with over a century of experience in driving safety solution innovation.

In normal outdoor settings, consumers must find means to block sunlight to gain appropriate visibility, which has been a major issue across relevant product categories. To receive this verification, a product must undergo several rounds of rigorous testing, in which peak brightness of over 3,000 ~ 4,000 nits,2 a higher contrast ratio of over 1,000:1, and color volume greater than 80 percent should be altogether achieved under over 10,000 LUX condition. The Terrace TV has displayed outstanding performance in these three key areas so viewers can enjoy clear, vivid images even in bright outdoors.

It also features Samsung’s premium QLED display, anti-reflection technology which reduces light reflection from its surface, as well as AI picture quality optimization technology for automatic brightness adjustment.

In addition to Samsung’s OH55A, an outdoor signage product which uses the same outdoor visibility technologies as The Terrace, also received visibility verification.

Samsung also recognizes the importance of weather resistance against rain and dust for outdoor TV set models. The company obtained IP55 water and dust resistance standard certification from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which together with the latest UL verification will play a pivotal role in fortifying Samsung’s efforts to provide an optimal viewing experience in various outdoor conditions.

“UL’s outdoor visibility verification for The Terrace will enable consumers across the globe to further add values to their viewing experiences,” said Yong Hoon Choi, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “As a leader in the TV industry, Samsung will continue to drive innovative technologies that are optimized for new and emerging lifestyles.”
