Samsung Electronics Health and Medical Equipment Business and Samsung Medison participated in the 2024 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) conference in Chicago, United States, from December 1st to 5th (local time) and unveiling an even more diverse product lineup.

To strengthen its competitiveness across medical specialties, after the launch of a new OB & GYN ultrasound diagnostic system, HERA Z20, Samsung proposed ‘pediatric integrated solution’ encompassing the entire range of its medical diagnostic devices through this RSNA.

In the ‘Ultrasound Zone,’ a dedicated probe for the pediatric cardiac diagnosis ‘TA2-9’ was unveiled for the first time at this exhibition. The TA2-9 with 42% smaller head than adult echocardiography probe aids in more accurate diagnosis for congenital heart disease or functional and structural abnormalities of heart through the oral route. Also on display was ‘L3-22’, a dedicated neonatal probe featuring a smaller head compared to an adult version offering a wide frequency range which enables pediatric body scan with a single device without the need to switch probes.

All US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) cleared products of Samsung digital X-ray have ‘low dose’ capability making it more appropriate for diagnosis of children and adolescents where safety is particularly prioritized. Samsung’s proprietary S-Vue imaging engine reduces radiation exposure by up to 50% compared to systems without this technology.

At this exhibition, Samsung launched a new ‘floor-mounted’ digital X-ray, GF 85. The new digital X-ray, GF 85 launched by Samsung is relatively affordable compared to ceiling-mounted type and cost-effective with the ability to be installed in a small space without ceiling construction. Moreover, it provides clear image quality even with low dose and is equipped with advanced AI diagnostic assistance feature, fully inheriting all the advantages of previous digital X-ray models.

NeuroLogica Corp, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, includes the OmniTom Elite mobile computed tomography (CT) in its portfolio, useful for imaging pediatric patients and at point-of-care, facilitating rapid clinical decision making and reducing transport related risks. Mobile CT is already recognized for its utility, with 8 out of the top 10 U.S. pediatric hospitals (as ranked by U.S. News for 2024-2025) utilizing the technology.

NeuroLogica’s OmniTom Elite with photon counting detector (PCD) technology showcased this year’s at RSNA delivers ultra high-resolution CT imaging at the point-of-care using FDA 510(k) cleared PCD technology, surpassing conventional CT methods that rely on energy integrating detectors. By utilizing photon counting detectors to measure the energy of each individual photon, this cutting-edge technology enhances contrast differentiation and virtual monoenergetic imaging, empowering radiologists with greater confidence in diagnosing patients.

Samsung provides opportunity to gain clinical application tips of Samsung medical devices and engage in Q&A with the global experts through Lunch & Learn session. In this session, a global breast imaging expert, Dr. Nina Vincoff shared a screening program using Samsung breast ultrasound solution and the latest insights on the FDA’s mandate for breast density information provision and implementation of additional imaging examination recommendation for dense breast (effective on September 10, 2024).

Dr. Farhad Farzanegan in Kasier Permanente South Sacramento health system U.S. presented a case study on hospital workflow improvement based on the result of CT intervention procedure using Samsung mobile full-body CT, BodyTom.

In the booth, Dr. Jon Jacobson, a musculoskeletal radiology expert, conducted live scan using a premium ultrasound diagnostic device, RS85 Prestige introducing clearer image quality and more sophisticated AI diagnostic assistance feature.

The leader of the Samsung Medison AI&Informatics group, Vijay, said “I discovered a greater potential through high praises from medical professors around the world who visited the site” and “Moving forward, we aim to further enhance our AI diagnostic support features tailored to specialized medical fields, solidify our technological leadership in radiology and obstetrics, and expand our competitiveness across all medical disciplines to pioneer new markets.”

An image that shows the capability of Samsung’s ultrasound technology has taken to the mainstage of one of the leading academic journals by gracing its cover as Picture of the Month for October. The clinical fetal echocardiography image is being featured by Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology (UOG), a title which specializes in women’s healthcare.

UOG is the official journal published by the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG). The image that the publication selected represents a breakthrough for Samsung Medison, a global medical equipment company and an affiliate of Samsung Electronics. Its fetal echocardiography technology called 5D Heart Color allows a precise diagnosis of congenital heart disease.

The clinical image was obtained from a 26-week fetus with hypoplastic left heart and coarctation of the aorta, in which nine standard fetal echocardiography views with automatic labeling were displayed on a single screen.

The story behind the image can be found in a research paper led by Prof. Roberto Romero, Chief of the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)/National Institutes of Health in the U.S., and Prof. Lami Yeo, M.D., from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, U.S.

According to the research, the Picture of the Month illustrates how the cardiac diagnostic planes shown by 5D Heart Color (i.e. color Doppler FINE – Fetal Intelligent Navigation Echocardiography) allowed a precise diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart with coarctation of the aorta, and that such planes demonstrated evidence of abnormal fetal cardiac anatomy and hemodynamic flow.

The publication stated, “The characteristic features of this congenital heart defect were visualized in the seven echocardiography views. In the four-chamber view, the left side of the heart was severely hypoplastic with absent flow through the atretic mitral valve, and the aortic arch view showed a very narrow transverse aortic arch (coarctation) with reversed color Doppler flow in this area and the isthmus.”

Samsung’s 5D Heart Color provides nine different fetal echocardiography views containing clinically useful information about cardiac structure and function, including the three vessels and trachea view, four-chamber view, left and right ventricular outflow tract views, aortic arch view, and four others. In cases of congenital heart disease, since abnormal fetal cardiac anatomy and hemodynamic flow characteristics are depicted, this enhances the diagnostic potential of the technology. In addition, there is reduced operator dependency, and examination of the fetal heart is standardized and simplified.

As 5D Heart Color marks the second time Samsung Medison’s technology has been selected as Picture of the Month, (The company’s Crystal Vue also gained the honor in 2016) it’s an illustration of how Samsung Medison is continuing to establish its brand power in the global women’s health industry by providing technology with clinical value to medical professionals.

“It is exciting to see 5D Heart Color is being featured on the front cover of UOG, especially since the diagnostic accuracy of 5D Heart was presented at last month’s World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology,” said Insuk Song, Vice President of the Health & Medical Equipment of Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to focus on developing medical technology that can improve the detection of fetal congenital heart disease and contribute to saving more lives.”

* Congenital heart disease is the most common organ-specific birth defect, and is also the leading cause of infant mortality from congenital malformations. The performance of conventional two-dimensional ultrasound of the fetal heart is time-consuming, requires considerable expertise and skill, and therefore is highly operator dependent. As a result, not all fetal cardiac views required for the accurate prenatal detection of congenital heart disease may be routinely obtained.

Samsung Medison, a global medical equipment company and an affiliate of Samsung Electronics, announced that its latest imaging technology ‘Crystal Vue’ has been featured on the front cover of Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology (UOG), a renowned academic journal in the women’s healthcare industry and the official journal published by the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG).

The March edition of the UOG featured a clinical case study by Dr. Christoph Lees, professor at the Department of Surgery & Cancer within the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College in London. Using Samsung’s premium diagnostic ultrasound system WS80A, professor Lees introduced two cases of prenatal imaging through Crystal Vue, of which the rib & vertebral images were selected as the Picture of the Month by UOG.

“Our experience with Crystal Vue over the past few months, specifically imaging of the bone and soft tissue interface, leads us to believe that it may offer new opportunities for prenatal imaging, particularly for the skeletal system, but also in facial and brain imaging,” Professor Lees stated in his study. “We were able to obtain highly detailed images that give particular information on the contour of the ribs and allow inference on mineralization.”

Crystal Vue is an advanced 3D volume rendering technology that enables users to assess detailed information of internal and external structures of the fetus or uterus and helps easily differentiate between the soft tissue and bone. With the additional morphological information, users may deepen their understanding of the patients and fetus.

Crystal Vue was first introduced at the 25th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, held in Canada in October 2015, as the latest imaging function of the WS80A. The WS80A with Crystal Vue is currently available globally.

“We are thrilled that Samsung’s latest technology was recognized in a leading academic journal as a new diagnostic imaging that can provide more clinical values in women’s health,” said Dongsoo Jun, President of Health & Medical Equipment Business at Samsung Electronics and CEO of Samsung Medison. “With Samsung’s leading display and software technology, we will continue to develop new features that can increase diagnosis confidence and contribute to women and fetal health.”
