To bring fans closer to the action than ever before, Samsung installed more than 200 Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones on the 85 athlete boats taking part in the Opening Ceremony. The event was livestreamed through a private 5G network powered by Orange (the official mobile network provider for Paris 2024 in France).

Fans tuning into the broadcast were given a closer look at an already unique celebration of the Olympic spirit in the 2024 host city of Paris. Those who watched the Opening Ceremony could experience the event from the athletes’ point of view as they shared scenes from this memorable ceremony using their Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition smartphones.

Samsung collaborated with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) to create a meaningful night for athletes and fans — requiring extensive planning with various Olympic partners for real-time footage streams, seamless 5G connectivity and other technology support.

The opening ceremony livestream is just one of several ways Samsung is sharing the excitement from Paris 2024 with the world. The sailing competition in Marseille and Victory Selfies will also bring fans closer to the Olympic Games. For a brand-new view of the sailing competition in Marseille, Samsung is installing Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones to the boats and on the athletes’ shoulders. Furthermore, medalists can capture their emotions with Victory Selfies using the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition provided at the podium.

More than 100 experts, 250 phones and 360 days of testing made delivering these moments possible. The efforts to enhance the viewing experience for fans around the world were all part of Paris 2024’s vision of a ‘Games Wide Open.’ Through its mobile innovations, Samsung will inspire Paris 2024 athletes and fans to keep an open mind because ‘Open always wins.’

At the heart of this new storytelling approach is a short centerpiece film, starring Emma Myers (known for her role in Netflix’s “Wednesday”) on a journey that transitions through the genres of film noir, science fiction, western, fantasy and action thriller. Myers plays the protagonist, but the hero of the piece is the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s Nightography. With an unparalleled ability to capture low-light scenes, Nightography enables clarity and detail that is truly cinematic.

What’s more, this central narrative has inspired complementary content. All around the globe, local influencers from Team Galaxy shot their own scenes in reaction. These diverse pieces, all filmed with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, have been woven together with the centerpiece to create the cohesive spectacle that is the complete “Epic Worlds.”

“I am so excited that Samsung invited me to be a part of Team Galaxy. Using a smartphone to bring such an incredible short film to life was really amazing, and I totally loved the results and the entire process,” said Myers. “I am drawn to unique projects, so working with Samsung provided me the opportunity to use that creativity more and to encourage others to do the same by creating their own short films. I cannot wait for everyone to see the compilation cut of ‘Epic Worlds’ — it’s a next-level collaboration.”

“It’s honestly blown me away,” said Zee Ntuli, director of the “Epic Worlds” centerpiece. “I’ve been incredibly impressed with what this Galaxy device is capable of. What’s really amazed me is how the phone performs in low light. Nightography is just a remarkable feature.”

The project follows the success of previous Filmed #withGalaxy campaigns, in which Samsung joined hands with high-profile filmmakers to demonstrate Galaxy’s power to create cinema-worthy content. “Epic Worlds” builds on that legacy with a bold statement that great content creation goes beyond power and image quality — it is also about creativity, community and the collaborative spirit, all of which Galaxy fosters.

Best known for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Synecdoche, New York, Kaufman took advantage of the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s filming capabilities to create a short visual art film in beautiful, crystal-clear detail. The film, titled Jackals and Fireflies, is based on a poem by Eva H.D., who plays the role of poet, narrator and lead actor in this uniquely Kaufmanesque love letter to New York City. Galaxy S22 Ultra’s Nightography allowed acclaimed Director of Photography Chayse Irvin to effectively capture New York’s famous night scenes, revealing the City to viewers as if they were witnessing with their own eyes. Kaufman found shooting with Galaxy to be an “effective approach” for bringing the film to life, and is very happy with the final result, adding that “the finished product is beautiful.”

The partnership builds on the Filmed #withGalaxy campaign, which invites visionary directors to demonstrate that the Galaxy S Series is the perfect tool they need to share their epic stories with the world. In October 2021, world-renowned British director Joe Wright used the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 13mm Ultra-Wide lens to shoot his short film Princess and Peppernose. Where To See Jackals and Fireflies

Capturing Epic Nighttime Shots

Galaxy S22 users, in particular, were able to capture excellent photographs with vivid colors and dense detail thanks to Nightography, a feature that allows users to take clear, vibrant photos even in low light environments.

Nightography, first launched with the Galaxy S22 series, is a function that enables meticulous detailing and color in low light by combining powerful hardware with artificial intelligence (AI)-based software. It is a function that will be included in more Galaxy smartphones in the future.

The #MakeNightsEpic campaign saw influencers around the world — including celebrity pop singer Sabrina Carpenter and Twitch-streaming Fortnite extraordinaire Myth — capture stunning night views of their respective cityscapes.

Capturing Magic #withGalaxy

To kick off the campaign, world-renowned director Joe Wright known for Pride and Prejudice and Atonement partnered with Samsung to create Princess & Peppernose, the tale of a princess in search of love who defies convention to pursue her own desires. The heartwarming musical uses puppetry and live-action choreography to tell a unique story captured entirely with a Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G smartphone.

“My parents ran and founded the first dedicated puppet theater in the UK, and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to get back to my roots,” Wright said. “What surprised me the most throughout this process was how quick and easy it was to get right in there and be present with the characters and the story. The camera is always ready, and all you need to do is point and shoot.”

During the creation of Princess & Peppernose, Wright and his crew took full advantage of the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 13mm Ultra-Wide lens to capture the full view of every scene.

“We chose to embrace the wider lens, something we’d never done before,” a cinematographer said. “Moving in for close-ups with the same lens we used for wider shots gave the film a very specific look and feel, a kind of ghostly, hallucinatory quality and took us back to the times shooting with a Super8.”

Celebrating Stories From Around the World, Filmed #withGalaxy

Following Wright’s film, Samsung will release additional Filmed #withGalaxy stories from respected directors around the world, including China’s up-and-coming director Sha Mo, known for Love Will Tear Us Apart and My Huckleberry Friends.

Sha Mo used the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G to capture footage for his new film Kids of Paradise, a poetic look at conflicts between children in a small school by the countryside. To capture the story, Sha Mo relied on Director’s Mode of the Galaxy S21 Ultra to record three different shots at once for an intuitive, almost professional-like filming experience.

“Working with Samsung, I discovered that anyone with a desire to express themselves or tell a story already has the equipment needed in their hand,” Sha Mo said. “The Galaxy S21 Ultra allowed me to capture angles and movements that I simply can’t get with a larger camera. Once I started filming, I was so excited to discover the story and the characters, that I almost forgot I was shooting with a mobile device and the ideas just kept flowing.”

Princess & Peppernose and Kids of Paradise will be unveiled at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in October.

“Filming is one of the most powerful storytelling tools, and one of the best ways to connect emotionally with your audience,” said Stephanie Choi, Head of Marketing for Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Business. “With this series, we want to show people that they really don’t need fancy studio equipment or big budgets to create amazing films — all they need is a little imagination and the Galaxy device in their pocket.”

The Samsung Smile Stories campaign aims to bring a smile to people’s faces by providing scientifically grounded facts on the physical and mental benefits that smiling can bring. The campaign also seeks to bring comfort to users by encouraging them to appreciate the small things found all around them in daily life that are capable of bringing a smile to their faces.

Samsung is asking the Galaxy community around the world to join this positive movement by sharing their photos or videos and their stories of what has kept them smiling these past few months using the #SamsungSmileStories and #withGalaxy hashtags on Instagram to inspire others to celebrate the small things.

The inspiring posts shared to social media so far have been compiled into a video and have been displayed on Samsung’s landmark digital signage in London’s Piccadilly Circus and Milan’s Duomo since October 13 and New York’s Times Square since October 14 to deliver a message of positivity and hope to people around the world currently trying their hardest despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic. The video will also be posted on Samsung.com and across Samsung’s social channels.

From October 13, passers-by to these large-scale landmarks will be able to enjoy the smiles and stories of others from around the world who have contributed to the campaign, and will be able to take away with them a reminder of why it is important to stay healthy and positive during this challenging time, and hopefully, will leave them with a smile on their faces, too.

The videos, including the hashtags #withGalaxy and #SuperSlowMo, will show consumers just how easy it is to create and share amazing Super Slow-mo content using the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+. These partnerships will result in more than 30 unique pieces of must-see content that will reach BuzzFeed and The Dodo’s massive audiences over the next two months. Fueling the current trend for creating and sharing slow motion content with the Galaxy S9 and S9+, the posts will capture and replay unique moments in everyday life − from compelling short-form content, to entertaining how-to video. BuzzFeed will showcase relatable everyday moments, taking the unique smiles, laughter and grimaces and turning them into epic, shareable moments. The Dodo will feature funny, emotive videos and stories of animals caught in the act – all shot on the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in The Dodo’s authentic style.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+’s Super Slow-mo camera captures slow motion video at 960 frames per second, revealing a whole new way to relive and share remarkable moments in the everyday. With automatic Motion Detection, users can simply set up the shot and press play. Users can set their video to music by selecting background music from 35 different pre-set options, or by picking a favorite tune from their personal playlist, before instantly sharing with three creative options – video on loop, reverse or swing mode.
