As a global leader in technology and innovation, Samsung Electronics aims to create working environments that allow every employee to advance themselves personally and professionally. Guided by their diverse backgrounds, perspectives and passions, Samsung employees around the world are shaping their own unique paths at the company.

With the aim of showcasing these paths, Samsung Newsroom conducted video interviews of some of its many inspiring leaders around the world. Watch the full video below to hear their inspiring stories:

Tips for Those on Their Journeys

Deborah Honig is the first ever Chief Customer Officer at Samsung Electronics U.K., a role that’s all about putting the customer at the center of Samsung’s offerings and bringing the strength of the company’s ecosystem together across B2B and B2C sales channels.

A proud Canadian and sports fanatic, Honig was inspired by her father, who was an airplane engineer. When Honig was a child, he would take her to his workplace, where she had the opportunity to witness industries that were pushing the boundaries firsthand. This marked the beginning of her interest in technology. Now, she is proud to be part of Samsung’s drive for innovation and is excited to be part of the journey to bring AI technology to users.

Honig is driven by the mantra, “power the possible.” To her, this means inspiring the best work in herself and in her team and is rooted in the belief that Samsung products help people live better lives. Her advice to others on their journey is, “Build your own tribe. Never underestimate the power of your network to lean on when you need coaching, inspiration or advice.”

In a hybrid role consisting of engineering, management and consultant responsibilities, Shin-Chul Baik leads a team of 50 engineers tasked with maintaining the cybersecurity of Samsung devices, including smartphones, tablets, TVs and home appliances.

Baik knew he would become an engineer from a young age and has worked consistently throughout his career to combine that strong technical foundation with expertise in business operations and interpersonal communications. The breadth and dynamism of Samsung has provided key opportunities in this regard, in addition to the company’s education program supporting him in achieving various security qualifications.

To get ahead, he recommends the following approach, “Aspire to jump to the next curve. But keep your head down and grind in the meantime. It’s about the journey of getting through the process, and grabbing the opportunity to jump to the next curve.”

Nguyen Thi Bich Hanh leads a team of nearly 100 engineers at Samsung R&D Center Vietnam, which works in mobile product development areas like performance improvement, memory optimization and software compliance. Her primary role involves overseeing project development, managing human resources, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring adherence to Samsung’s internal processes.

Her journey began back in high school, where she was amazed at how quickly code produced results and the creative opportunities it offered. This led to her attending one of Vietnam’s premier technology universities and then her position at Samsung, which has shown her how the company fosters personal growth by creating a positive environment and offering numerous training programs.

Her advice to the world is, “Think differently. Always question how to improve the current state and never stop learning. If you encounter a challenge, do not be afraid to embrace it or to make mistakes. Figure out what you truly desire, believe in yourself, and work to transform every setback into an opportunity for growth.”

Camila Andrea Segura Rodriguez leads the marketing team for Home Appliances at Samsung Colombia, which is a role that involves developing effective product communication strategies to impact potential customers while closely collaborating with other teams.

As someone who was drawn to creativity since childhood, she wanted to develop a career that allowed her to express her creativity and imagination, which is exactly what she found in her first internship at a creative agency. Since joining Samsung, her journey has led to an appreciation for the dynamic work environment and the opportunities to grow professionally, particularly the provision of development tools like the Leadership Incubator.

When asked for her tips she would share with others, she says, “Stay true to yourself while continuously nurturing your growth with diverse people, opinions and experiences. Surrounding yourself with different voices challenges your thinking, sparks creativity and helps you evolve. Embrace change, stay open to learning, stay grounded in your values, and let both your uniqueness and the richness of diversity shape your journey.”

Daniel Harvie is Head of the TV/AV business for Samsung in the U.K. & Ireland — a role in which he leads a large team across sales, marketing and product — with the core responsibilities of working with channel partners, creating consumer demand and managing the supply chain.

The path that led to Harvie’s career at Samsung was certainly a unique one, since his childhood was rooted in competitive sport before he moved on to majoring in music and the performing arts at university and eventually pivoted to consumer technology. He credits his broad skillset to this varied background and believes his story is a testament to how different life experiences can bring value to a company. In terms of career growth, Samsung has provided him with the opportunity to develop expertise across multiple European markets and a better understanding of global strategy, including formal leadership development programs.

His advice to others on their Samsung journey is, “Firstly, be open-minded, always be willing to learn from new experiences and challenges you face, and take on different perspectives. Secondly, carry with you an optimistic mindset. Optimism, with a healthy dose of realism, is a proven force multiplier and massively increases your ability to see opportunity, to be solutions focused and to galvanize people around ambitious goals.”

Roopa Sheshadri Kotiganahally is a Director at Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore, where she leads the development of cutting-edge Galaxy device features powered by AI/machine learning (ML). Her team focuses on leveraging the power of computer vision, deep learning and generative AI paradigms to enhance photo and video experiences. Her position allows her to pursue her dream of working in tech — which began when she first became fixated on computers in high school — all while collaborating and sharing knowledge with a large team of talented professionals who push and grow alongside each other.

During her career at Samsung, Kotiganahally has found that the company fosters a culture of innovation and continuous learning. For her, the IIMB Thought Leader Program and AI postgraduate programs have been particularly beneficial, as they have allowed her to expand her knowledge of AI and its applications in the mobile domain.

Kotiganahally’s advice for others on their journey is, “Embrace curiosity and a lifelong love for learning. Don’t be afraid to explore new ideas and challenge the status quo. Believe in your potential and pursue your passions with dedication and perseverance, because the innovation journey is an ongoing one, and every step — every challenge — brings valuable learning experiences.”

Joy Amaka Tim-Ayoola is responsible for leading a mobile experience team at Samsung Electronics West Africa, a role that involves setting goals and sales strategies to address market realities, with the ultimate goal of driving revenue.

As a child, she envisioned herself as a solution provider, driven by her curiosity about the world’s challenges and how to tackle them, which led to an interest and career in technology. As she grew a little older, technology began to boom in Nigeria, and in that time she began to understand that one person could solve complex issues through programming. It is this recognition and desire to solve problems that led to her choosing a career in information technology. At Samsung, Tim-Ayoola feels she has been provided with the opportunity to combine her academic and career experiences to tackle real world challenges, thereby realizing her original dream of solving problems for others through technology.

Her advice to the world is, “Be purposeful! Be intentional in what you believe, embrace change as a catalyst for growth. Have a good supportive network.”

With the rise of flexible work environments, organizations require meeting spaces equipped with advanced video conferencing technology to enable seamless collaboration for distributed teams. Businesses can now leverage Samsung’s high-definition displays with Logitech’s conference cameras, webcams and audio systems to achieve crystal-clear video and sound, helping remote and in-person participants feel like they are in the same room. Samsung Interactive Displays also enable teams to connect, share ideas and whiteboard on a single screen.

These days, working with people from diverse backgrounds is the norm. With more than 221 work sites around the world and operations in more than 74 countries, Samsung Electronics is home to employees of various nationalities, religions, generations and values. Samsung believes respecting diversity and communicating with transparency not only drives individuals to fulfill their potential but also fuels innovation and growth. As the company creates products and services that meet the needs of consumers around the world, this open mindset is seen as the key to true connection and success.

To honor International Women’s Day on March 8 and reflect on the value of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), Samsung Newsroom sat down with Samsung employees from different backgrounds — from executives to new hires and DEI managers — to hear their thoughts on the company’s thriving DEI culture.

“Diversity is the engine of sustainable growth in a global company, and Samsung is committed to Innovation for All,” said Younghee Lee, President and Chief Marketing Officer of Global Marketing Office at Samsung Electronics.

“As a global company, our brand philosophy emphasizes solving customers’ problems and helping them enjoy a better life with our technology and innovation, regardless of their region, race or gender in any part of the world. We are making an effort to genuinely share this value with customers while supporting our mission throughout the organization,” she said.

Lee urged employees to establish a culture of accepting differences by “listening to colleagues’ opinions and having open discussions so that each person can fully realize their capabilities based on their unique background.”

In celebration of International Women’s Day, she advised women to always be themselves and trust their potential. “I believe that if women challenge themselves and pursue what they truly want — in a way that’s true to who they are, rather than blindly following others — it will be a meaningful step forward not only for them but also for society as a whole.”

As a designer for Samsung Electronics’ Interaction Design Team responsible for inclusive design, Gunho Chae considers the brand’s wide customer base to develop products and services that respect the diversity of all users.

Samsung developed a glossary of terms to inform its inclusive language and created guidelines and training materials so employees are well-equipped to incorporate DEI values into all user interface elements and images.

“Samsung accepts all customers and recognizes their differences — regardless of their age, disability, family structure, gender identity, race, culture or socioeconomic status,” said Chae. “We respect all users and strive to make our products, services, manuals and advertisements relevant to our customers for an enhanced user experience.”

Michelle Anne Manglal-Lan, who oversees DEI at Samsung Electronics America, seeks to create an environment where employees can smoothly communicate, understand and learn from each other. She is particularly committed to providing motivation to female employees and fostering a corporate culture where they feel empowered to unlock their potential. Last year, she organized the Americas Employee Resources Groups (ERGs) conference to establish a network for collaboration and share best practices in DEI.

“The ERGs were born out of our employees’ interest and engagement with DEI,” said Manglal-Lan. “Together, we are stronger and can achieve our goals faster. I’m proud of the fact that our North America Region is the first office to launch an ERG.”

A new employee at Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display (VD) Division, Jiyoon Jang realized the company was more diverse than she had imagined when she first stepped foot in Digital City, Samsung’s Suwon office. “We received DEI training during our new employee onboarding sessions, and I realized the importance of an inclusive culture in a place with such a diverse group of people.”

“I knew Samsung made donations to social responsibility efforts,” she said. “Since joining I also learned that the company is sincerely committed to developing technologies that are truly inclusive.”

Relumino Mode for people with low vision and Audible Subtitles for people who are hard of hearing are among some of the projects the VD Division has developed to make the company’s products more accessible — and align with the department’s slogan, Screens for All.

“I hope the products that I work on in the future will contribute to diversity and inclusion and that I will be able to take pride in what I do,” Jang said. “I believe that discrimination against minorities and intergenerational conflicts stem from ignorance, so I am working hard to educate myself by attending sessions and reading about diversity, equity and inclusion whenever I get the opportunity.”

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Samsung Electronics held a variety of events related to this year’s slogan, #InspireInclusion. The Device Experience (DX) Division ran a photo campaign that encouraged employees to take pictures together while making hearts with their hands — the official gesture symbolizing International Women’s Day. The event was a success, with pictures to prove it. “I’m glad to have taken part in such a fun and meaningful event,” said Seok-Nyoung Cha from the MX Division. “I hope we can all think deeply and act together to fight biases, stereotypes and discrimination.”

More than 700 employees took time to thank the female colleagues and family members in their life at another event. At the DX Division’s Female Executives’ workshop, hosted since 2021, female executives held candid conversations with the CEO to discuss the company’s vision and ways to foster female leaders. Additionally, a mentoring program for female developers will be launched this year.

▲ Employees hold up heart hands — the official International Women’s Day gesture — in front of a photo wall set up by the DX Division.

Starting this March, the Device Solutions (DS) Division will organize monthly activities to build awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) values among its employees. After selecting DEI topics centered on women, people with disabilities, caregivers and foreigners, the division will hold contests and training sessions each month that give employees a chance to learn how to show support for one another. Furthermore, the division will conduct interviews with female leaders in celebration of International Women’s Month and relay their thoughts on female leadership and how younger women can grow in their careers.

Outside of Korea, the company will partner with Dress For Success (DFS)1 in three countries — the U.S., Canada and Mexico — to organize clothing donation drives to help women get jobs and gain financial independence. Webinars and seminars that raise awareness about DEI will be held as well.

Last November, the DX division established the DEI office to reflect DEI values in all areas of the business, identify areas of improvement and further promote an inclusive corporate culture. To this end, the office checks the company’s systems and culture for discriminatory practices and holds training sessions and campaigns to give employees an accurate understanding of these values. In addition, the office supports voluntary Employee Resources Groups (ERGs) dedicated to DEI that facilitate discussions on the company’s diversity status and improvement goals through the DEI Council, in which the company’s executives take part. “It is of the utmost importance to operate a diverse and equitable system. We believe that innovative products and services can emerge from a culture where DEI is respected,” said Jinhee Nam, Secretary General of the DEI Office at Samsung Electronics. “Our office established a global DEI policy and plans to operate various programs to increase diversity and create an inclusive organizational culture.”

Jong-Hee Han, Vice Chairman and CEO of the DX Division at Samsung Electronics, and Kye Hyun Kyung, President and CEO of the DS Division at Samsung Electronics, delivered a company-wide message to employees calling for gender equality and highlighting the importance of DEI in honor of International Women’s Day. “I would like to express my gratitude to all the female employees in the DS Division who are doing their best,” said Kyung. “We will help all employees realize their full potential to achieve both personal and professional growth at Samsung,” Han assured.

In the past, smartphones were viewed as consumer-oriented products, and businesses issued their employees dedicated B2B mobile devices to help boost productivity and effectiveness. However, as smartphones and B2B apps grew more sophisticated, companies gradually adopted bring your own device (BYOD) policy, encouraging employees to use their own personal smartphones at work to perform business functions.

Unlike smartphones, we believe wearable technology will see much faster adoption in the B2B space, as wearables offer something that businesses have wanted for years from their mobile devices: at-a-glance access to actionable data and greater hands-free functionality.

A recent white paper published by IDG and Samsung Business, titled, Wearables Make Their Move to the Enterprise, highlights a wide range of prospective B2B use cases for wearable technology — from the ability to connect hands-free with e-mail, calendars and contacts, to more purpose-built productivity applications for training, collaboration and real-time notifications.

Demand for such technology has been growing. In a recent PwC survey, 77% of respondents saw benefits in wearable devices for boosting efficiency and productivity at work; and 70% of participants fully expect their employers to permit the use of wearable technology at work.

How will we meet this demand?

According to the latest IDC ConsumerScape 360 survey, Samsung Electronics is one of the most trusted wearable brands in the market. And, by leveraging our growing portfolio that includes the Gear S, Gear Circle, Gear Fit and Gear VR, we are actively working towards realizing the promise of wearable technology in the B2B space, integrating wearable technology with products, solutions and services targeted to the needs of specific vertical markets, including health care, education, financial services, retail/hospitality, logistics and transportation and government.

Although wearable technology is still in its early stages, we see tremendous potential. Here are just a few hypothetical examples that could employ a wide array of Samsung products and solutions:

Hotel staff could use wearable technology to manually adjust a room’s smart thermostat, and send a list of local attractions to a networked printer. Meanwhile, kitchen staff could use their smart wearable devices to connect with smart refrigerators and see at a glance a full inventory of available ingredients.

High school teachers could use wearable technology to remotely power up and control audio visual equipment in a classroom or auditorium, and select a pre-programmed lighting configuration for a presentation. Learning also goes beyond classrooms: with technologies such as QR codes and augmented reality, wearable tech can take field trips to a new dimension.

Sales people in retail outlets could use wearable devices to connect with and control digital signage, enabling them to instantly switch and update promotional displays or call up store maps or images of specific products in inventory at the request of a customer.

Nurses and caretakers can leverage vital sensors in wearables worn by patients, in order to monitor a patient’s vital condition, medical treatments, exercise programs, location in hospitals and any emergency situations. Patients can also be notified via messages about when doctors are on their way for appointments and check-ups.

Logistics workers – many of whom already use Samsung wearable devices to help them conduct inventory, sort packages, and update shipping information – could someday also use wearables to unlock secured doors to allow access for deliveries, interact with automated storage/retrieval systems and adjust temperature and airflow in a smart storage environment.

There are certainly many potential, promising applications of wearable technology in the B2B space. The above examples are just the tip of the ice berg. By bringing wearable technology into the B2B space, those of us at Samsung hope to introduce a new generation of B2B products, services and solutions that will take productivity and efficiency to a whole new level.
