Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra measures 4.1mm when unfolded and weighs 215g. It is Samsung’s thinnest Galaxy Z Fold yet. To achieve this slim design, Samsung reworked the display structure, materials and internal architecture as one connected system.

Making a foldable thinner is a complex engineering challenge. The display must withstand repeated folding. The hinge, battery, thermal system and other components must also fit within the device. Each component must work seamlessly with the others.

Samsung therefore took a system-level approach to the design. This helped the company reduce the device’s thickness while maintaining the flexibility and strength required from a foldable.

Flex Titanium Supports a Thinner Display

Samsung introduced Flex Titanium as part of the new display structure.

Flex Titanium combines a titanium plate with a titanium-alloy film. The titanium plate sits beneath the display and provides structural support. It also helps absorb pressure and impact from both sides of the device.

Samsung developed a precision-engineered lattice structure for the titanium plate. This structure allows the plate to remain flexible while maintaining its strength.

The titanium-alloy film sits beneath the display panel. It provides additional strength, flexibility and elastic recovery. It also supports the repeated folding that is central to the Galaxy Z Fold experience.

A Thinner Display Creates More Internal Space

Samsung reduced the thickness of the display module by 10%. This created additional space inside the device for components such as the battery, thermal system and camera.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra also features a 5,000mAh battery and an 8-inch main display. The slimmer display structure helped Samsung maintain these capabilities within a thinner overall design.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra measures just 4.1mm when unfolded.

Samsung tests the complete foldable system

Samsung did not treat thinness as a standalone design goal. The company engineered the display, hinge and internal components together.

Samsung subjected the latest Galaxy Z series to more than 100 reliability validation tests. These tests covered drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris.

The testing helped Samsung assess the complete device under conditions that reflect everyday use.

Every Millimetre Matters

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra brings together advances in materials, display engineering and internal architecture. The result is Samsung’s thinnest Galaxy Z Fold yet.

The device demonstrates how changes to one part of a foldable can create opportunities across the entire product. Samsung’s approach focuses on making every millimetre count while preserving the strengths of the foldable form factor.

AI is being widely used to analyze biosignals measured by wearable devices such as smartwatches. By identifying meaningful patterns in health data — including sleep, heart rate, and physical activity — AI is helping users better understand and manage their health.

The Health Forum held at Galaxy Unpacked July 2026 also shared Samsung’s Connected Care vision for the next chapter of digital health — a future where care moves from reactive treatment toward preventive, personalized, and connected experiences, supported by trusted health innovation and partnerships across the healthcare ecosystem. One technology that is helping power these new consumer experiences is the health foundation model.

Researchers from the Digital Health Team at Samsung Research America (SRA) are developing new AI technologies to continuously understand a person’s health state from biosignals, generate health insights, and offer appropriate health guidance.

Samsung researchers recently introduced two foundation models based on wearable data: xMAE (Physiology-Aware Masked Cross-Modal Reconstruction for Biosignal Representation Learning), which learns the temporal relationship between different biosignals, and HiMAE (Hierarchical Masked Autoencoder), which understands health patterns across different time scales in wearable time-series data. Both studies demonstrate advancement of health AI models that can better understand the physiological relationships and temporal structure of biosignals.

Samsung’s work on xMAE and HiMAE models was accepted to the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), and the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR), respectively, highlighting the significance of this research.

Health Foundation Models That Read the Body’s Signals: Why They Matter for Health

A health foundation model is an AI model that uses self-supervised learning to learn meaningful features from unlabeled biosignal data. After being pretrained on large-scale health data, the models can be applied to perform a wide range of downstream health tasks, including biosignal analysis, developing new or improved biomarkers, and health issue prediction.

xMAE AI model: Continuous Cardiac Insight from Wearables

An electrocardiogram (ECG) on wearables directly measures the electrical activity of the heart and is useful for measuring heart rate and heart rate variability, identifying abnormal heart rhythms and risks for conditions such as atrial fibrillation. ECG is highly accurate, but typically requires users to pause and take an active measurement. On the other hand, photoplethysmography (PPG) can indirectly measure cardiac function by detecting changes in blood flow and can be passively and continuously measured through sensors in wearable devices such as smartwatches.

The two signals originate from the same cardiac activity, but they appear with a certain time difference, much like thunder is heard after lightning is seen. xMAE is a biosignal pretraining framework designed to learn the temporal relationship between the two signals by reconstructing masked portions of the ECG signal using the more easily and continuously measured PPG signal. As a result, cardiovascular health-related features can be analyzed more precisely using PPG without requiring separate manual ECG measurements.

The researchers pretrained xMAE using approximately 9,400 hours of ECG and PPG data. The model outperformed unimodal biosignal models and existing multimodal learning methods in 15 of 19 evaluation tasks, including cardiovascular disease prediction, abnormal test-result detection, and sleep-stage classification. The study also confirmed the potential to use the learned features across different sensor devices, body locations and data-gathering environments.

HiMAE AI model: Reading the Body at Every Time Scale on the Device

Health data measured from wearable devices can reveal different information depending on the time scale at which it is analyzed. For example, short time segments can reveal rapidly changing signals such as heartbeats, while longer time segments can uncover patterns that accumulate over time, such as sleep or physical activity. This is similar to examining different information by zooming in and out of an image.

HiMAE is a self-supervised learning model that learns representation from wearable data across multiple time scales. It uses multiple encoders to analyze short and long segments separately, allowing the model to identify information required for each health task, such as heart rate analysis or sleep prediction, at the appropriate time scale. During training, the model reconstructs masked parts of the data. This enables it to learn key patterns in biosignals even when labeled data is limited.

A single pretrained HiMAE model handles classification, numerical prediction and data generation. The model achieved high performance while being smaller than existing models. It also improved computational efficiency to the point where it can produce results in less than one millisecond on a smartwatch-class central processing unit (CPU). Most importantly, HiMAE demonstrates the potential of on-device health foundation models for the first time — analyzing raw health signals in real time, without relying on cloud servers.

The Next Step Toward Connected Care

Together, xMAE and HiMAE, represent an advance in AI models that precisely understand the physiological relationships and temporal structures unique to biosignals.
Samsung’s latest innovations, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, redefine what it means to be the best foldable by offering two distinct form factors tailored to different lifestyles. Whether you’re immersed in entertainment, multitasking, or content creation, these devices provide the perfect blend of design and functionality to meet your needs.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 stands out as the best foldable for immersive discovery and content experience. Its redesigned proportions ensure a compact profile when closed, while unfolding reveals a wider canvas that enhances how content is experienced. The 4:3 main display offers an immersive viewing experience for movies, gaming, and social media, while rotating the device to a 3:4 orientation makes it ideal for reading and browsing. At just 201 grams, it’s Samsung’s lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet, combining portability with a 4,800mAh battery that supports up to 26 hours of video playback. This makes it the best foldable for users who want a seamless and natural way to consume content.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the best foldable for powerful productivity and creation. As the first Ultra model in Samsung’s Galaxy Z series, it features an expansive 8-inch display that provides a large workspace for multitasking and creative work. Despite its size, it remains remarkably slim at just 4.1mm when unfolded and weighs only 215 grams. The advanced camera system, including a 200MP main camera, extends its capabilities for creators who want to capture, edit, and share from one device. This makes it the best foldable for professionals and creators who need a powerful mobile workspace.

Together, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra represent two different interpretations of what it means to be the best foldable. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is designed for discovery, offering an immersive way to experience content, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is built for maximum productivity and creation, delivering the power of an Ultra experience in a foldable form.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your lifestyle. Will you choose the Galaxy Z Fold8, the best foldable for immersive content discovery, or opt for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the best foldable for powerful productivity and creation? The decision is yours.

Samsung Electronics today announced that its Galaxy Buds Hearing Aid feature has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance. The feature enables compatible Galaxy Buds1 to serve as an over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid,2 offering users 18 years and older a convenient solution for addressing perceived mild to moderate hearing loss — which may be indicated by difficulty following conversations in noisy environments — without a prescription or clinic visit. Users can also diagnose their hearing with the Galaxy Buds Hearing Test feature, which is registered as a Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) and provides medical-grade results.

“Hearing health is a vital component of our overall well-being, profoundly impacting how we communicate, connect with loved ones and engage with the world,” said Hon Pak, Senior Vice President and Head of the Digital Health Team for the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics. “With the latest clearance from the FDA, we are expanding access to hearing support and making proactive care effortless by integrating the Hearing Test and Hearing Aid functionality directly into the Galaxy Buds.”

Hearing loss is incredibly common, yet it remains one of the most overlooked health conditions worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that globally, more than 1.5 billion people experience some degree of hearing loss — a figure projected to reach 2.5 billion people by 2050. Despite this, many people who could benefit from hearing aids do not use them due to high cost, social stigma or limited access to professional care.

Samsung has been committed to advancing hearing support technologies for consumers since 2020. That year, the company introduced a Personal Sound Amplification Product (PSAP) feature on Galaxy Buds+.

The PSAP feature was clinically validated in 2021 as effective support for daily communication for those with hearing loss, building the foundation for the Hearing Aid feature. To develop this new OTC solution, Samsung collaborated closely with the National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) and Samsung Medical Center (SMC). The resulting technology is backed by robust clinical validation studies conducted at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, San Jose State University and the University of Memphis.

▲ Example of a Hearing Test result

Samsung’s holistic hearing health experience centers around two major features integrated directly into Galaxy Buds without requiring a separate app3. By navigating to the Galaxy Buds menu in Settings, users can complete a self-administered Hearing Test in just five minutes. Using clinical-grade, pure-tone audiometry, the software tests each ear individually to pinpoint the user’s specific hearing deficits. It then generates an audiogram with accuracy comparable to a professional audiologist’s evaluation. The results categorize the user’s hearing as normal or one of four stages of hearing loss: mild, moderate, severe or profound.

Based on those results, the Hearing Aid feature amplifies the sounds users have difficulty hearing — such as high frequencies, surrounding whispers and distant voices — personalized to each user’s hearing profile. Hearing Aid also supports additional advanced features typically found in premium hearing aids, such as noise elimination and beamforming, which help focus sounds in front of the user and suppress background noise.

Galaxy Buds use NAL-NL2, recognized globally as the clinical standard formula for fitting prescription hearing aid. This advanced approach ensures highly personalized, accurate results tailored to each individual’s hearing profile.

To give users a comprehensive view of their overall wellness, hearing-related insights — including noise exposure levels and Hearing Test results — are accessible directly within the Samsung Health app.

Availability

The Hearing Aid and Hearing Test features will be available on Galaxy Buds3 Pro and Galaxy Buds4 Pro in the U.S. and select approved markets in Q4 2026.

Samsung Electronics announced that the new Galaxy Z series and Galaxy Watch lineup are beginning to roll out worldwide. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, Flip8, Watch Ultra2 and Watch9 are available through carriers, retailers, Samsung.com and Samsung Experience Stores, with sales beginning Aug 7 in select markets and expanding globally.

Strong early demand reflects growing excitement for Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z series, with pre-orders for the new lineup having increased by more than 30% compared with the previous generation. Graphite was the most popular color overall for Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8, while Pink led pre-orders for Galaxy Z Flip8. Among Samsung.com pre-order customers aged 15 to 34, exclusive colors Green Shadow, Pistachio and Mint emerged as the top choices for Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8, respectively.

The New Galaxy Z Series: Three Distinct Foldable Experiences

Built on seven generations of foldable innovation and consumer insight, the new Galaxy Z series gives users more choice than ever, with three distinct experiences engineered to fit different needs.

Galaxy Z Fold8 introduces a fresh form factor built around the way people explore, discover and immerse themselves in their favorite content. Its display ratios are designed to move naturally with users throughout the day – from quick interactions like messaging, browsing and short-form video on the wider cover screen to more immersive viewing, reading and gaming on the 4:3 main display. With Gemini Notebook, users can bring together notes, images, recordings, files, and documents in one workspace to collect, organize, and develop their ideas. At just 201 g, it is Samsung’s lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet, while Samsung’s new Flex Titanium technology helps support a slimmer display structure with lasting durability and reduced crease visibility over time.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra brings Galaxy’s renowned Ultra standard to foldables, combining a larger workspace with an upgraded camera system and performance built for demanding creative workflows. Its expansive 8-inch main display opens up more room for multitasking, while Now Nudge[1] helps users move from conversation to action by suggesting relevant next steps across supported apps.

The 200 MP main camera now supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) in 200 MP mode for richer detail, color and clarity. A new 50 MP ultra-wide camera adds greater flexibility for wider scenes and macro shots, helping users capture more from one device. Across Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8, Dual Recording captures both the action and the user’s reaction, while My FanCam[2] automatically tracks and reframes a selected subject.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra also features a 5,000 mAh battery[3], 45 W fast charging and an expanded graphite cooling structure – all in Galaxy’s slimmest Z Fold design yet, measuring just 4.1 mm when unfolded and weighing 215 g.

Galaxy Z Flip8, Samsung’s sleekest Flip ever released, is built for expression and quick interaction on the go. Its reimagined FlexWindow brings apps, insights, actions and assistance directly to the cover screen. Now Brief[4] surfaces personalized information based on users’ schedules, routines and interests. Users can also access Gemini from the FlexWindow through side-key activation or natural voice requests, making it easier to complete connected actions on the go. Galaxy Z Flip8 further enhances Samsung’s signature Flip camera experience with a 50 MP camera, ProVisual Engine and FlexCam experiences that make it easier to capture, preview and share polished photos and videos from flexible angles.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9: Effortless Health Management From the Wrist

Refer to the user manual for further information, including care/use instructions. Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is dust resistant with an IP6X rating based on the lab test conditions by a third party: 2 kg of talc powder (max. diameter of 0.05 mm) per cubic meter was blown into a test chamber housing the device (air pressure within device kept below surrounding air) for 2 hours. Dust resistance may vary by actual usage conditions.
