Samsung Electronics today announced it has been recognized by Interbrand, a global brand consultancy, as a “Global Top 5” brand for the fifth year in a row. Interbrand releases its list of “Best Global Brands” each year, and on this year’s list, it was revealed that Samsung’s brand value reached $100.8 billion and grew by 10% year-on-year.

The significant increase of Samsung Electronics’ brand value was driven by growth in the AI industry, particularly its leadership in on-device AI and competitiveness in the semiconductor sector. Since its first top five ranking in 2020, Samsung Electronics has experienced an impressive 62% growth over four years and remains the only Asian business among the global top five brands.

Samsung India’s flagship CSR program Samsung Innovation Campus concluded the AI, IoT and Coding & Programming courses for its second batch of 168 students in Bhubaneswar, reiterating Samsung’s commitment to being India’s strong partnerships and working alongside the Government in its mission to empower the country’s youth and #PoweringDigitalIndia.

The students who were mentored and trained at Center Tool Room and Training Center (CTTC), Bhubaneswar were granted certificates of course completion at a felicitation ceremony on Monday, 3^rd July at CTTC, Chandaka Avenue, Infocity Bhubaneswar. The students were felicitated by officials from Samsung and ESSCI, which is executing the program through its nationwide network of approved training and education partners.

The first batch of students, who graduated in the month of March this year, set a remarkable precedent, showcasing the program’s effectiveness in transforming young minds into competent tech professionals. This time around, a batch of 168 students, of which 42 have been trained in AI, 106 in IoT, and 20 in Coding and Programming participated in a hackathon and developed codes based on the problem statements presented to them.

The problem statements included topics such as diseases that affect the flora, healthcare data storage for scientists to improve macro level health issues, complex e-commerce platforms. The teams presented their prototypes to a jury of 5 Members from CTTC, Bhubaneswar – Mr. Mananjay Nayak, Mr. Hrushikesh Mohanty, Mr. Mrutunjay Mishra, Ms. Monalisa Das and Mrs. Ritu Maity.

Samsung India launched its Samsung Innovation Campus program at eight campuses across the country with the aim of upskilling 3,000 less-privileged youth in future tech domains such as AI, IoT, Big Data, and Coding & Programming and helping them get relevant job placements.s

Samsung Innovation Campus aims to upskill youth aged 18-25 years in future technologies and enhance their employability. These are key technology skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. During the program, participants receive instructor-led classroom training through approved training and education partners of ESSCI across the country.

Youth enrolled in the program are undergoing classroom training and will complete their hands-on capstone project work in their selected technology areas from Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, Big Data, and Coding & Programming. They will also be imparted soft skills training to enhance their employability and provided job placements in relevant organizations.

Those opting for the AI course will undergo 270 hours of theory training and complete 80 hours of project work while those doing the IoT or the Big Data course will undergo 160 hours of training and complete 80 hours of project work. Participants opting for the Coding & Programming course will do 80 hours of training and be part of a Hackathon.

The Digital Service Center provides personalized support basis the needs of consumers once they log in to their Samsung account. Q: What is the theme for Samsung Research’s showcase at CES 2022?

The overall concept for Samsung Research at CES 2022 is “Digital, Meet Physical”. We’ve gone to great lengths to show how the personalized experiences that millennials and zoomers value can be seamlessly connected to the digital world.

To that end, the ‘house’ that we set up at CES was designed to resemble a digital world like a metaverse. Our AI ​​Avatar was created to identify users’ locations in the real world using UWB (Ultra Wide Band) location recognition technology, and interact with them through the nearest smart home product.

At this year’s CES, two types of companion robots will be introduced: the Samsung Bot i, an interactive robot, and the Samsung Bot Handy, a manipulation robot that can assist with household chores. They can help users by arranging a video conference for an urgent meeting, or by setting the table for a meal. Our CES 2022 booth demonstrates how AI and robots can come together to introduce innovative user experiences to the home of the future.

Q: What are some of the Samsung Bot i and Samsung Bot Handy’s most innovative features and technologies?

The Samsung Bot i is an interactive robot that utilizes balance control technology. It moves like a living being, making dynamic and life-like movements. When it’s next to the user, it moves alongside them and offers various forms of support. When it’s away from the user, it manages various tasks for them using its telepresence² function.

The Samsung Bot Handy is a robot that helps out with various household chores using manipulation³ technology. This enables the robot to recognize objects at home and skillfully pick them up. Whereas at last year’s CES, we showcased a technology that could pick up a single object based on learning, this year, we will introduce a scenario called “tableware handling”. This technology enables the robot to pick items up after recognizing multiple objects and analyzing the surrounding environment.

Q: How would you summarize Samsung Research’s R&D philosophy when it comes to robots, and where is the company’s research heading?

Samsung Research’s Robot Center is conducting research in various areas under the vision, “Samsung Bot, Touching Your Daily Life.” We strive to make our robots companions that help users in their daily lives by closely interacting with them and making their lives happier and more convenient. To achieve this, we’re taking core robot technologies like mobility and manipulation a step further by creating platforms based on our extensive expertise in AI, and we’re developing various robots based on research in those areas.

The Galaxy S21 FE: A Smartphone for Fans, by Fans

Q: Which features of the newly unveiled Galaxy S21 FE should people pay special attention to?

The goal of the Galaxy S21 FE (Fan Edition) is to offer the Galaxy S series experience to even more users. It was created by combining the most beloved features of the Galaxy S21. What makes the S21 FE so special is that it makes the S21 series’ flagship experience available to more people while offering the same iconic contour-cut design, outstanding AI-powered camera, Dynamic AMOLED 2X display and flagship performance.

The camera is a crucially important part of the smartphone. Millennials and zoomers (members of Gen Z) in particular make use of the front-facing camera in a range of different ways. That’s why we equipped the S21 FE with a high-resolution, 32MP front camera that lets you take high-quality photos anytime, anywhere.

Q: Galaxy FE devices are designed to allow more people to enjoy the core flagship features that Galaxy users love. How are users’ opinions gathered on functions, and what insights have you gained through that research?

When planning FE devices, we collect feedback on the Galaxy series from thousands of fans. Through that research, we’ve been able to identify which aspects of the Galaxy S series fans love the most.

We listen closely to their feedback and identify the common perceptions about Galaxy devices that transcend regional and cultural boundaries. Q: Why is Samsung continuously expanding the Galaxy S series lineup? What is the ultimate goal?

When it comes to innovating with the mobile experience, Samsung is at the forefront. We have always been one step ahead of market demand, and we’ve been able to use the Galaxy brand to bring users new and innovative mobile experiences. The Galaxy S21 FE is the latest product of our approach to innovation. With its unique colors and design, it offers users a broader range of choices, helping them express themselves.

“This has been a momentous year for Samsung. We have worked to advance our solutions by leveraging high computing power and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies,” said David Legg, Vice President, Digital Radiography and Ultrasound, NeuroLogica. “We will be deploying AI features in each of our products to provide benefits to healthcare professionals and patients alike.”

Ultrasound

At the event, Samsung will showcase its new V8, which is a high-end ultrasound system that provides enhanced image quality, usability and convenience for ultrasound professionals. Crystal Architecture is the core of the V8’s image clarity and penetration and is built upon the combination of innovative beamforming (CrystalBeam), sophisticated image processing (CrystalLive) and advanced S-Vue Single Crystal Transducers to produce clear, uniform and high-resolution images.

The feature-packed device includes two new AI functions, one being NerveTrack, which detects nerves and provides nerve location information in real-time to anesthesiologists and expert practitioners. The function is designed to provide users with accurate nerve detection, faster image processing and better workflow support. The second AI function is UterineAssist, which detects tissue changes and assists the user in taking measurements of the uterus. With these and other new tools, the V8 delivers a new level of versatility and value to a wide range of diagnostic medical ultrasound departments.

Samsung has also worked to advance its ultrasound solutions for women’s health. Recently, the Hera W9 and W10 received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(K) clearance for its new AI functions, which gives the operator the ability to measure anatomical structures and analyze imaging, providing useful information to aid diagnosis.

New features include:

• HeartAssist: A deep learning-based function that provides classification of ultrasound images to display measurements. The feature recognizes various views and proposes caliper placements and corresponding measurements allowing users to save time with measurement proposals and increase examination efficiency by reducing keystrokes.
• ViewAssist: A deep learning-based function that classifies ultrasound images to deliver key scanning views and provides annotations. The feature recognizes a range of views, proposes corresponding anatomy annotations and initiates measurements.
• BiometryAssist: An automatic solution for biometric measurement that can be modified by the user. It enables users to measure fetal growth parameters with one click while maintaining exam consistency.

Digital Radiography

Samsung is also showcasing its premium digital mobile X-ray, the AccE GM85, which delivers unparalleled performance and gives users better diagnostic confidence while improving workflow. Recently, Samsung received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Auto Lung Nodule Detection (ALND) tool, which can be utilized in the AccE GC85A and in other systems. The ALND is provided as an on-device computer-assisted detection (CADe) software that uses an AI algorithm to detect pulmonary nodules between 10 and 30mm in size.¹

The benefits of ALND include:

• Aids the user in the diagnostic process by indicating the location of suspected lung nodules on chest X-ray images (posteroanterior chest radiographs).
• Offers the option (Autorun) to automatically perform nodule detection immediately after chest X-ray imaging in addition to PACS transmission options to suit the hospital environment, both of which simplify the user’s workflow.
• The ALND has been clinically verified by multiple university hospitals and has been approved with a sensitivity of 80% or more.² As part of Samsung’s commitment to advancing diagnostic radiology using AI, Samsung will expand the uses of the chest CADe solution and continue improving diagnostic accuracy and workflow.

Computed Tomography

Also featured at RSNA is the OmniTom^® Elite – a mobile computed tomography (CT) scanner that delivers high-quality non-contrast CT, CT angiography and CT perfusion scans at point-of-care. The OmniTom Elite CT boasts a small footprint and high-resolution image quality. The advancements of the scanner help to optimize diagnostic confidence, speed and workflow across departments, such as neurosurgery, pediatric imaging, critical care, diagnostic radiology and more.

Earlier this year, NeuroLogica announced that the OmniTom Elite with Photon Counting Detector (PCD) technology will be piloted by Massachusetts General Hospital, bringing CT imaging to the patient’s point-of-care. Pending FDA 510(k) clearance, the hospital is testing the OmniTom Elite with PCD to monitor post-trauma and post-surgical patients.

The OmniTom Elite’s ability to provide versatile, real-time mobile imaging enables healthcare providers to administer point-of-care CT to critical patients without the need to transport them to a separate department. The mobile unit will decrease the time it takes to diagnose and initiate treatment for patients in the ICU. During the pilot stage for the OmniTom Elite with PCD, Massachusetts General Hospital will guide best practices and evaluate use cases for the novel system.

To power immersive mobile experiences in 5G, Samsung has introduced advanced 5G solutions that include new baseband units and radios. Among these 5G radios, Massive Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) radios are one of the most attractive options for mobile operators looking to deploy or enhance their 5G networks. The massive MIMO radio is a breakthrough solution that is equipped with a lot of antennas for better coverage and more capacity than a radio. As 5G networks continue to expand around the world using mid-band spectrum, 5G Massive MIMO radios with hundreds of antennas are commonly deployed in the market to help handle the growth in mobile data traffic.

To develop these powerful 5G Massive MIMO radios, numerous tests must be conducted to inspect the products for performance and reliability. One of the tests is conducted at a special facility called an anechoic chamber. Samsung Electronics has several anechoic chambers that are used to analyze and test the antenna performance of its radios. Recently, the company opened a large anechoic chamber at its Digital City campus in Suwon, Korea in order to enhance its ability to introduce more advanced and compelling 5G solutions to its customers.

Testing in Anechoic Chambers

The term “anechoic” comes from “an-echoic”, meaning non-echoing or non-reflective in Greek. As its name suggests, this room can emulate a non-reflective environment by using special walls and ceiling and floor designs to completely absorb all reflected electromagnetic waves. This is extremely important since even a small electromagnetic wave can disrupt an accurate antenna measurement. The interior walls are built with a number of absorbers that have a pyramid shape and help to minimize interference in the shielded room. This concept is very similar to how a stealth aircraft evades radar detection by absorbing and scattering radar signals.

The chamber’s interior is also equipped with a parabolic reflector. This reflector is used to collect radio waves from a generator and re-project the waves to the 5G radios placed inside the chamber. By collecting and re-projecting the waves at different angles, the parabolic reflector can simulate long distances, making it seem as though the 5G radio were transmitting radio waves to a mobile device from a far-off location. While the size of the chamber is relative to the simulated distance, Samsung’s chambers can simulate a distance of as much as hundreds of kilometers, creating what is called a “far field condition”. To measure the accuracy of radio performance, the size of the chamber is critical.

The newly added non-reflective chamber in Samsung’s Digital City is the size of a basketball court. Beneath the reflector, the engineer looks as small as an insect!

Samsung’s anechoic chambers are also able to cover a wide range of spectrum across low, mid and high-bands. This is especially useful in evaluating 5G radio performance since 5G spans various spectrum bands. Specifically, Samsung’s facilities have the ability to test mmWave antennas, which power high-capacity 5G mobile services. The mmWave spectrum is not used in 4G technology but is crucial to supporting immersive 5G use cases due to its wide-bandwidth.

By enabling tests to be conducted using a range of spectrum, the data sets collected in this way will help Samsung’s engineers verify and analyze a very high number of radio patterns. Based on the findings, engineers are able to refine and improve 5G radio performance to deliver best-in-class solutions for mobile services.
