Samsung India has entered into a partnership with the Government of Karnataka to help the state efficiently manage its public healthcare facilities.

As part of the agreement, Samsung Research & Development Institute, Bangalore (SRI-B) handed over 1,000 Samsung Tab IRIS to the Department of Health, Government of Karnataka. Samsung Tab IRIS, the first commercial tablet to be approved by UIDAI for Aadhar and KYC verification, would enable Public Health Centers (PHC) in the state to build their database in a digital format.

This association is aimed towards providing advanced technological support in the management of medical subsidies and operations at PHCs in the state more efficiently.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Samsung R&D Institute, Bangalore and Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka.

This will enable Public Health Centers to maintain and share medical databases on a real time basis. Samsung Tab IRIS is SIM enabled and has the capability to scan the Iris of an individual, which can then be linked to Aadhar. This would help PHCs to generate various value added reports to facilitate decision making by the Health Department. This integration of technology with the help of Samsung Tab IRIS, aims to centrally consolidate information related to PHC administration such as patient treatment, diagnosis, deliveries and drug availability from various locations along with GPS information.

Digitizing the database is very important for our public health centers as it will lead to better planning and decision making at a state as well as central level,” said Shri. “We aim to connect with each and every resident of Karnataka at their door steps by upgrading the skills of our field staff and equip them with high tech Tabs. We are grateful to Samsung for associating their program with Karnataka. In the days to come we will have Virtual Clinics with specialists on board connected to patients through these Tabs. The surveillance data and health records of patients would be analyzed online to take effective steps towards prevention of diseases. Audio visual awareness will also be enhanced through the use of these Tabs,” said Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka.

The digital database of these Public Health Centers would have the capability to provide information regarding implementation of various welfare schemes such as post-natal care kit for BPL/SC/ST women, Janani Suraksha Yojana, and others at the PHC level. This would provide information support to the Government to proactively intervene for improved health of citizens and target its welfare schemes more efficiently.

Dr. Aloknath De accepting the “Most Innovative Product” award for the Galaxy Tab Iris

Samsung India has bagged the ‘Most Innovative Product’ award for its Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris, at the IESA Technovation Awards held in Bengaluru.

The prestigious Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) Technovation awards recognize role models for innovation and excellence in products developed in India for the Electronics and Semiconductor industry that have had a positive impact on the market.

The ‘Most Innovative Product’ Award was accepted by Dr. Aloknath De, Chief Technology Officer, Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore.

“The marriage between advanced technology like Iris-based biometric processing and the Digital India vision of providing technology to every citizen is the uniqueness of this product. It is creating solutions that touch lives of people across multiple strata of society,” said Dr. Aloknath De.

“Our India R&D team has made significant investments in biometric technology research and we built this product leveraging our knowledge in hardware design, biometrics and security for a high speed scan, greater accuracy and high reliability,” he added.

The Galaxy Tab Iris, launched in May 2016, is yet another ‘Make for India’ innovation from Samsung. The device is Aadhaar-compliant and STQC-certified. It’s advanced Iris-recognition technology provides an integrated solution that helps solve the hassles of using separate devices for biometric identification.

The award also demonstrates the entrepreneurial start-up culture within Samsung. Along with the Galaxy Tab Iris device, Samsung provides an Identity SDK for application developers to build financial inclusion, payments and authentication solutions. This will encourage the start-up ecosystem to build relevant apps and services. The overall offering will in turn strengthen government programs such as Jan Dhan Yojana and E-Citizen services under the Digital India initiative.

The easy-to-use biometric technology, currently incorporated in the Galaxy Tab Iris will help citizens get access to financial inclusion benefits. It will also encourage cashless and paperless services in various applications such as banking and eGovernance services such as passport, taxation, healthcare and education. The solution will support government programs and will enable banks and financial institutions to streamline the process of an individual’s authentication, regardless of language and literacy barriers.

Samsung Research & Development Institute, Bangalore (SRI-B) has renewed its partnership with International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Bangalore for imparting M.Tech course with specialization in Computer Science to SRI-B employees.

The Memorandum of Understanding for renewing the agreement till January 2020 was signed by Prof. Debabrata Das, Dean Academic and R&D, IIIT Bangalore and Dr. Aloknath De, Corporate Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of SRI-B.

Ninety employees from SRI-B were selected for this program, with the first batch successfully completing the program this year. In July 2017, convocation for the first batch will take place at IIIT-B.

“Delighted to see how more than 90 of our brilliant employees’ aspirations to undergo M.Tech program is getting realized over last three years through this initiative with IIIT-B. Professors’ sincere engagement and employees’ excellent performance have reiterated organization’s belief of such program’s innate value,” Dr. Aloknath De, said.
