Each year, Samsung reimagines “Over the Horizon” with a new theme to express its brand philosophy through music. Following a traditional Korean orchestra in 2024 and a big band jazz interpretation in 2025, the 2026 edition conveys a message of sustainability through the rich harmonies of a full orchestra. Released ahead of the unveiling of the new Galaxy S series on February 25 (PST), the piece illustrates both the grandeur and delicacy of nature — portraying a harmonious coexistence between technology and the planet.

Los Angeles-based composer and pianist Eunike Tanzil is credited with the music and arrangement for the 2026 edition of “Over the Horizon.” Known for her lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies, she first drew Samsung’s attention in February 2024 with her reinterpretation of the theme on social media.

In her arrangement, Tanzil translates inspiration from nature into music. The majestic opening — led by brass and horns — evokes towering mountains, while smooth legato strings in the middle section recall the calm sea. She also incorporates the angklung, a traditional Indonesian instrument, into the Western orchestral setting to create a distinctive harmony. Reflecting on this creative decision, she said, “Blending instruments with different identities was an enjoyable challenge and became a meaningful chapter in my musical journey.”

“Over the Horizon 2026” was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed the piece, adding depth and resonance to the melody. Producer and engineer Jonathan Allen used Dolby Atmos technology to create an immersive listening experience, while careful microphone placement enhanced the natural sense of space.

We act on three packaging design principles – reduce, replace, and recycle; these principles have guided the eco-conscious changes to packaging for the Galaxy S series. From the quantity of packaging to the materials used, Samsung has worked to streamline product packaging and implement more sustainable processes.¹

From Galaxy S7 To Galaxy S21: Our Journey to More Eco-Conscious Packaging

Since the release of the Galaxy S7 in 2016, Samsung has developed more eco-conscious packaging with each generation of the Galaxy S series. Throughout this journey, we had worked diligently to remove elements that could stand in the way of people easily recycling their product packaging after purchase.

The packaging for the Galaxy S21 series contains just 4%² of the plastic used in the Galaxy S7 packaging, reducing waste generated per packaging unit by 49%. Similarly, the Galaxy S21 packaging contains only 58% of the paper used in that of the Galaxy S7, helping save some 44,802 trees a year.³ As a result of these continued sustainability efforts, we decreased the amount of carbon generated during the development of the Galaxy S21 series’ packaging by 50% compared to that of the Galaxy S7.⁴

Following extensive research into eco-conscious materials, the Galaxy S8’s packaging saw several evolutions compared to the previous Galaxy S series. We removed the magnet from inside the packaging along with the plastic in-box case for earphones, and the accessory tray – traditionally comprised of plastic – was made with paper-based material.

For the release of the Galaxy S9, we made an extra push towards reducing plastic waste. Samsung changed the device tray material from plastic to a pulp-mold material, integrating upcycled materials into our process.

For the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20, Samsung expanded eco-conscious changes to packaging. We replaced plastic with paper to tie together accessories, the package structure was simplified, and all the packaging trays for in-box accessories were integrated into one pulp-mold tray to cut down on unnecessary materials. Furthermore, the protective film was removed from accessories such as the charger plug and the USB connector, and the coating for all accessories was changed from a glossy finish to a more eco-conscious matte finish that hides fingerprints and is harder to scratch.

The packaging for our latest flagship device, the Galaxy S21 series, is the most eco-conscious product packaging within the Galaxy S series. Every box for the device is made with corrugated cardboard, instead of rigid paper, to improve recyclability. Accessories such as the charger plug and in-box earphones were removed to further minimize the amount of packaging and promote reuse and recycling habits among Galaxy users.

Promoting Resource Efficiency Into the Future

Despite emerging challenges around the availability of sustainable materials and productivity of global supply chains as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Samsung still has a responsibility to help combat climate change and protect the environment in everything we do.

At the end of 2020, we achieved our goal of using 100% recycled or sustainably-sourced paper packaging⁵ and now require paper suppliers to submit certifications and conform to international standards, such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. We recognize that our journey to shifting to a fully circular economy is not over.

Samsung continues to search for new and innovative eco-conscious materials for our product packaging, to discover new ways to minimize materials used and to optimize our product development processes. In advance of future product releases, Samsung will continue to make changes that provide people with more eco-conscious product and packaging experiences as we work together with our supply chain and our customers to create a more sustainable world.

2010 – Hello, Smartphones!

Galaxy S was launched in 2010 with the first 4-inch (10 cm) 480×800 pixel Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, a PowerVR graphics processor, Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5-megapixel primary camera and a 0.3-megapixel secondary front-facing camera.

2011 – Size Zero of Smartphones

With thickness of just 8.49mm, Galaxy SII was introduced as the size zero of smartphones. It was one of the first devices to offer a Mobile High-definition Link which allows up to 1080p uncompressed video output to an MHL enabled TV or to an MHL to HDMI adapter, while charging the device at the same time.

2012 – Bestselling Device of the Year

The Galaxy SIII was the first to have a HD screen. With this smartphone, Samsung launched Multi Window (Android 4.1), Ambient Light, Smart Stay, S Voice, and S Beam (NFC). It employed an intelligent personal assistant (S Voice), eye-tracking ability, and increased storage.

2013 – Sophisticated Software

Galaxy S4 focused on features like IR Blaster (phone could double as a universal remote), Smart Program, Smart Rotation, Smart Scroll, and Story Album. The phone’s ability was enhanced to detect a finger hovering over the screen. It also had an expanded eye tracking functionality.

2014 – High Resistance 

The fifth generation Galaxy S model brought fingerprint scanner on the home button and a heart rate sensor near the primary camera. Galaxy S5 was IP67 Dust and Water Resistant. The dust rating 6 is the highest level of protection, and the rating 7 in water resistance meant water-resistance up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

2015 – New Curves! 

Samsung launched Galaxy S6 & S6 edge with unique Wireless Charging and Curved Edge Screen features. While wireless charging gave consumers more flexibility to charge their phones, Curved Edge Screen Display didn’t just offer them a gorgeous design but a brand new way to interact with their device with edge functionality.

2016 – Redefining the Phone Camera

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were the first phones to offer a Dual Pixel Autofocus camera that ensured a great image quality regardless of lighting conditions.

2017 – Infinity Display

With Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung broke the monotony and raised the bar of smartphone design by introducing the stunning Infinity Display. It came with Samsung Pay for India.

2018 – New Audio & Augmented Reality Experience

Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9+ came with industry first features such as Dolby Atmos Surround Sound, Dual Aperture, and AR Emoji etc, changing the smartphone experience.

2019 – The Future is Here

As the flagship series celebrates its 10^th anniversary, we want to reflect on just how far we’ve come in our journey of mobile innovation. It’s the perfect opportunity to look ahead at what’s in store for the decade ahead and share how Samsung will continue to test boundaries.

Laying the Foundation

Samsung has never been one to shy away from big ideas. Long before the first smartphone, engineers in Suwon, South Korea were re-imagining every element of the mobile phone, setting in motion the trends that have shaped the mobile technology today.

Right from the beginning, Samsung saw the potential of turning the mobile phone into a multi-functional device. The release of the TV phone in 1999 brought entertainment to the palm of our hands, while the built-in 10-megapixel camera on the Samsung B600 brought high-quality photography and the mobile phone together.

Meanwhile, the desire to expand mobile capabilities led to creative solutions. Years before “smartwatch” would become a household term, innovators at Samsung developed the watch phone in 1999 to enhance productivity on-the-go.

Improving user experience was also a core aspect of Samsung’s innovation DNA in the early years. In 2002, Samsung launched the True Color Phone, introducing the world to the active matrix LCD display, and paving the way for the innovations in mobile display technology that are synonymous with the Galaxy series.

The Arrival of Samsung Galaxy

The lessons learned from the early years positioned Samsung to lead the industry at the start of the smartphone era. Guided by the value of open collaboration, Samsung joined forces with Android to push the frontier of mobile technology – a move which led to the birth of the Galaxy series.

In March 2010, Samsung launched the first Galaxy S series device. Packed with best-in-class technology – including a powerful GPU, a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, and a 5-megapixel camera – the Galaxy S created the blueprint for a mobile experience that enriches and simplifies everyday life. Building on the achievements of Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and Galaxy SIII delivered even more relevant benefits to users, cementing Samsung’s status as a pioneer in the smartphone industry.

Over the years, the Galaxy series continued to break new ground, improving and expanding the smartphone experience with each new device. The Edge Display curved the smartphone screen for the very first time, creating an immersive screen. The Infinity Display pushed bezels to the very edge of the phone, expanding the screen size without needing a larger phone to create the ultimate, uninterrupted viewing experience.

In 2011, the Galaxy Note established an entirely new mobile category — the large screen smartphone and debuted the S Pen. With increased screen real estate, users could watch, multitask and create more. The Note debuted the iconic S Pen, delivering new ways to interact with the smartphone.

Alongside the development of hardware, the Galaxy ecosystem has grown every step of the way to make connected living a reality. A suite of functionalities emerged that came to define the Galaxy—the flagship features that users looked for in every new device: Samsung Knox, Samsung Pay, and countless other services and capabilities that made a Galaxy.

Shaping the Next Ten Years

Samsung has established a rich legacy of innovation and has shaped the smartphone experience for hundreds of millions of consumers around the world. But we’re not resting on our laurels. We’ve set our sights on Galaxy’s future and are focusing on engineering the technologies and breakthroughs that will continue to transform the mobile landscape.

At the 2018 Samsung Developer Conference, Samsung unveiled the Infinity Flex Display, marking the beginning of the era of foldable smartphones. It also introduced its new interface that simplifies and streamlines the user experience and gives consumers a more natural way to use their phones.

Samsung isn’t just changing how smartphones will look. It’s also changing how they’ll connect. We’re working hard to usher in the next generation of connectivity with 5G. Samsung has more 5G patents than any other company and was the first company to receive FCC approval for its 5G network equipment. Our technology brought 5G networking to South Korea, and in partnership with U.S. carriers, we’ve already brought the first wave of 5G to the United States. We’re committed to putting 5G in consumers’ hands with a 5G smartphone in the first half of 2019.
