From concerts and cars to homes and headphones, high-quality sound enriches everyday experiences. For 80 years, JBL has evolved alongside changing listening habits while remaining deeply connected to music and culture. Meanwhile, Bowers & Wilkins has spent 60 years pursuing exceptional sound through precision engineering, craftsmanship, and an uncompromising commitment to reproducing the original performance.

Both brands are part of HARMAN, a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. In 2026, the companies mark three milestones — JBL’s 80th anniversary, Bowers & Wilkins’ 60th anniversary, and 10 years of the Samsung-HARMAN partnership.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with Dave Rogers, President of the Lifestyle Division, and Armin Prommersberger, Chief Technology Officer, both at HARMAN, about the values that have shaped the two audio brands, the evolution of the Samsung-HARMAN partnership, and what lies ahead.

▲ (From left) Armin Prommersberger and Dave Rogers

A Legacy of Pioneering Spirit and Innovation

Q. What has allowed JBL and Bowers & Wilkins to remain relevant across generations?

Rogers: JBL has never assumed that what worked yesterday would be enough for tomorrow. The brand has expanded beyond cinemas and studios into festivals, cars, homes, headphones, and portable speakers.

Technology, listening habits, and culture have changed, but the reason people care about sound remains the same. Sound evokes emotion, creates memories, and brings people together.

The journey from the JBL 4310 studio monitor to the JBL L100 loudspeaker captures this well. The 4310 was developed for professionals whose work demanded critical listening. JBL then carried that professional audio DNA into the L100, bringing professional-grade sound into the home. The L100 went on to become the brand’s best-selling loudspeaker. More than a technological evolution, this transition reflected JBL’s ability to connect the people who shape culture with those who live it.

▲ (From left) JBL 4310 studio monitor and JBL L100 Classic 80

Bowers & Wilkins has followed a different path from JBL. Designed for accuracy, its 801 loudspeaker became a reference monitor for engineers at Abbey Road Studios — the recording studio that has worked with some of the world’s most celebrated artists — reflecting the brand’s commitment to acoustic precision and fidelity to the original performance.

Different personalities, but the same refusal to compromise on what matters.

Q. What is one core value of JBL and Bowers & Wilkins that should never change?

Rogers: Our obsession with quality and the experiences both brands deliver. Products and technology will change, but how we make people feel — that’s the standard.

Prommersberger: Curiosity. The moment an engineer says, “That’s good enough,” we have a problem. Fortunately, we have quite a few people at HARMAN who find “good enough” deeply irritating.

Bowers & Wilkins’ Nautilus loudspeaker is a great example. The brand had already made significant progress in reducing unwanted vibration with its Matrix cabinet technology, but John Bowers and his research team questioned whether the cabinet itself was part of the problem. That question led to five years of research and ultimately to the development of Nautilus, featuring a tapered-tube design to absorb unwanted sound from the back of the drive units.

Good engineering is not only about solving problems. Sometimes, it is about becoming uncomfortable with the solutions that have already made you successful.

Q. And what must continue to change?

Prommersberger: Technology. People’s expectations don’t stand still, and we’re moving toward experiences that understand context, adapt intelligently, and become more personal.

Today, we still do a lot of work for our devices — choosing modes, opening apps, and adjusting settings. With AI and greater connectivity, technology can better understand us and adapt more naturally to our needs.

The breakthrough will not be that our devices can do more. It will be that we have to manage them less.

Complementary Strengths, Shared Ambition

Q. What have Samsung and HARMAN achieved and learned over 10 years of partnership?

Rogers: One of the earliest examples was bringing HARMAN’s audio expertise into the Galaxy experience through AKG, a HARMAN company. We combined our knowledge of sound with Samsung’s capabilities in mobile technology, design, and scale to enhance products people already use every day.

We then applied this approach more broadly through the Automotive Digital Cockpit, combining Samsung’s strengths in displays and connected ecosystems with HARMAN’s automotive and in-cabin expertise. The ambition was no longer simply to bring better technology into cars but to see them as part of people’s connected lives.

We’ve learned how to turn our differences into strengths.

▲ Dave Rogers

Throughout our journey together, we’ve also learned to think bigger and faster. Samsung has an extraordinary ability to turn ideas into technology that touches people’s lives on an enormous scale. That mindset challenges us — in a good way.

The Future of Sound That Moves People

Q. Samsung and HARMAN share a vision for connected experiences. What could that look like throughout someone’s day?

Prommersberger: Imagine a typical day. You wake up, and your Galaxy devices are ready to help you start the day. When you leave home and get into your car, the vehicle can adapt to your journey and the preferences you’ve chosen to share.

Your audio experience continues naturally. Information is prioritized based on the situation while you’re driving, and the cabin adjusts to the people inside. On the way home, your car and home can work together to make the transition feel almost seamless.

A truly connected day should have fewer seams in it. Users shouldn’t have to think about which app to open or which setting to change. They should simply feel that technology understands the flow of their day and gets out of the way.

▲ Armin Prommersberger

Q. What excites you most about the next 10 years?

Prommersberger: I think technology is going to understand us much better — our environment, preferences, activities, and needs. That creates new possibilities for sound, mobility, and connected experiences.

Technology should become more intelligent so the experience can become more human. If we get that right, people won’t notice the complexity underneath. They’ll simply feel the difference.

Rogers: Eighty years from now, people may not remember every technology we launched. But they’ll remember the experiences those technologies made possible — the concert they felt part of, the song they couldn’t stop playing, the drive they’ll never forget, and the people they shared those moments with. Technology changes quickly, but human emotion doesn’t. Our opportunity is to keep bringing those two things together.

HARMAN Professional Solutions, the global leader in audio, video, lighting and control systems, today announced the launch of new JBL Professional One Series 104-BT and 104-BTW desktop reference monitors with Bluetooth in India. The speakers are also perfect companion to desktops and laptops providing the iconic JBL Professional sound for an exceptional audio experience every day.

JBL One Series 104-BT reference monitors enable content creators and audio professionals to stream accurate, studio-quality audio via Bluetooth or play back audio using a standard wired connection. Drawing from more than seven decades of JBL Professional engineering, JBL One Series 104-BT monitors deliver clear, detailed sound while mixing and editing. With an array of easily accessible input options, smart features and a sleek, compact design, JBL 104-BT monitors provide great sound in every listening scenario, with the added flexibility of wireless streaming. Black (104-BT) and white (104-BTW) finish options are available.

“We are excited to bring studio quality audio to budding artists and established professionals in the comfort and safety of their homes. Music production has evolved beyond the recording studio, and today’s creative professionals and music lovers need reference monitors that deliver neutral, accurate sound to create mixes that translate well in a variety of listening environments,” said Aditya Todi, Senior Director, Professional Solutions, India and SAARC, HARMAN. “While ideal for musicians, producers, podcasters and audio engineers, JBL 104-BT monitors will fulfill any audio enthusiast’s need for an accurate, reliable sonic reference and a truly enjoyable listening experience.”

The JBL 104-BT reference monitor features a cutting-edge coaxial driver that pairs a contoured low-frequency woofer with a soft-dome tweeter, for accurate frequency response, superior imaging, crisp detail, and a wide sweet spot. The cabinet’s low-frequency port works with the driver to deliver impressive low frequency performance down to 60Hz. A powerful 60-watt Class D power amplifier distributes 30 watts per speaker for clear, undistorted, loudest-in-class output. And One Series’ innovative acoustic design, optimized for desktop use ensures accuracy without the need for additional EQ.

High-bandwidth Bluetooth 5.0 streaming, beyond offering the convenience of audio playback from mobile devices, provides audio professionals the ability to reference mixes over Bluetooth using a professional monitor, rather than a consumer portable device. This ensures that your audio will sound its best, no matter what the playback environment.

JBL 104-BT reference monitors integrate smoothly into any production workspace, thanks to smart features like a front-panel input control that selects Bluetooth, Aux, RCA, TRS or combines all inputs. Front-panel volume control allows convenient level adjustments without straying from the sweet spot, and a front-panel headphone jack conveniently mutes the speakers when you switch to headphones. Dual 1/4-inch balanced, dual RCA and single 1/8-inch inputs, along with Bluetooth accommodate a wide range of signal sources.

JBL One Series reference monitors were created with the modern production lifestyle in mind. With a sleek, elegant look and a compact form factor, creators can get legendary JBL sound while conserving valuable workspace. An optional protective carrying case will also be available for production on the go. Both the black 104-BT and white 104-BTW make stunning statements in any studio.

On the occasion of World Music Day, celebrated on June 21st each year, HARMAN has partnered with OnePoll* to understand just how important music is in our lives, especially during the prevailing times.

A survey of 2,000 participants across India, found that one in every two adult Indian strongly believes that there is no life, without music. 92% Indians said they have depended on music to get through a difficult phase in their lives. 87% of respondents believed they are more productive while listening to their favorite tunes.

Specifically, respondents were impacted by music in four key areas:

Music improves their mood during the pandemic

Overwhelmingly, 90% of all respondents said that music has helped them cope with self-isolation, during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

So much so, that Indians are listening to music for an extra 45 minutes, on an average, per day in the current times.

71.7% Indians have created specific ‘self-isolation’ playlists that include tracks that helps them meditate or have a soothing, calming effect on their mind.

84.73% of Indian women and 80% of men say that music is a big stress buster.

64% of all surveyed Indians believed that music helps them sleep better, while 71% say it’s the best motivator during a workout.

And when the chips are down, 79.70% of Indians turn to music to uplift their mood versus 47% of them talking to a friend.

Music helps increase productivity

Does music help us to be more productive? Is there a connection between the music we listen to and the amount of output we can deliver? It sure does! In India, on an average 87% of respondents believed that they can work better while listening to their favorite music.

The results are similar in other regions of the world. 75% of French and 65% of German respondents believed to have a positive impact on their productivity, when listening to their favorite music while working.

Music builds connections

HARMAN’s study showed that ‘like minds listen alike’. 75% of Indians believe that they have connected with someone because they happen to share the same taste in music.

Friends are the number one influencers when it comes to choosing the genre of your music at 72%, followed by parents at 42.9% and siblings at 40%.

Music helps make memories

Survey respondents said that music has been an important part in celebrating their lives’ milestones.

Many indicated that music has helped them celebrate important life events like graduation (41.95%), marriage (30.15%) or moving to a new city (32.15%).

The relationship of a large part of Indians with music started at an early age with 44.65% taking music lessons in school and 41.7% have learned to play an instrument or sing, and continue to do so.

“Music has been central to our culture- from rich heritage folk music to eclectic musical soundtracks in movies. But we are inspired by its profound and positive impact during challenging times on our emotional and physical health.” said Pradeep Chaudhry, Country Manager, HARMAN India. “At HARMAN, with our rich legacy and years of experience with the latest audio innovations through our brands JBL, Harman Kardon, AKG, Infinity and others, we are dedicated to helping people get the most out of their listening moments and are grateful for the sublime benefits music delivers.”

*This random double-opt in survey was conducted by OnePoll – a market research company and corporate member of both the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR) – and adheres to the MRS code of conduct.
The large 14 metre screen offers powerful, captivating and larger-than-life visuals with greater attention to detail. The screen is capable of delivering true colors with HDR support with greater vibrancy and accuracy along with sharp contrast, higher levels of brightness and great viewing angles that are unaffected by ambient light; eliminating optical distortion and interference. The disruptive technology is a breakthrough in the cinema industry, which has been relying on projector-based system for decades.

The latest Onyx Cinema LED screen comes equipped with an array of solutions including Onyx VIEW, Onyx 3D and Onyx SOUND, providing a uniquely immersive experience.

The sound system at Swagath Onyx Theatre is comprised of Onyx Sound, an innovative audio solution that incorporates industry leading products from the HARMAN family of brands including Crown amplifiers, BSS signal processing, and JBL Professional’s loudspeakers and exclusive Sculpted Surround technology. The Onyx Sound reproduces today’s dynamic soundtracks with stunning clarity and detail.

The system includes six JBL AM 7315 screen array loudspeakers, four JBL 9300 cinema surround loudspeakers, eighteen JBL 9350 + four JBL SCS 12 high impact cinema surround loudspeakers, six JBL AC28/26 used as underfills for the balcony area and nine JBL 5628 dual 18″ cinema subwoofers. Processing is provided by a BSS networked audio system, and the entire system is powered by 31 Crown DSi amplifiers.

Apart from the new Onyx Cinema LED Screen, Swagath Onyx Theatre in Bengaluru has also upgraded its overall look and feel inside the theatre with refurbished interiors and comfortable seats, even as it retains its heritage look on the outside.

About Onyx Cinema LED

The Onyx display easily accommodates any venue configuration while delivering unmatched visual quality, technical performance and reliability over traditional projectors. The screen maintains its advanced presentation capabilities in ambient lighting conditions, regardless of the featured on-screen content. It also allows theatre owners to utilize their theatres for corporate events, concerts and sports event viewing and gaming competitions.

Onyx SOUND: The screen offers state-of-the-art Onyx surround sound experience, the result of research and co-development by HARMAN and Samsung’s Audio Lab, bringing scenes to life through clear and precise audio. This innovative audio solution solves the challenges posed for center channel audio when incorporated with a solid cinema LED screen, which does not allow for the placement of loudspeakers behind the screen, which is the common placement in traditional cinemas. When combined together with JBL’s Sculpted Surround technology, Onyx Sound creates a seamless, immersive audio experience for viewers, regardless of their seat location, that further enhances the already stunning visuals offered by Onyx.

Onyx VIEW: Combined with an infinite contrast ratio and specialized low-tone greyscale settings, Onyx VIEW delivers brighter and more detail-rich content. The screen delivers High Dynamic Range (HDR) to cinema, showcasing on-screen contents at peak brightness level – nearly 10 times greater than that offered by standard cinema projectors (146fL versus 14fL). The display delivers improved uniformity, free of optical distortion and interference. It is industry’s first DCI-certified cinema display available in 5, 10 and 14 metres width.

3D Onyx Cinema LED: This screen makes 3D movie content more realistic through enhanced brightness and consistent colour amplification. Glass-wearing viewers can now have the benefit of watching subtitle texts, images and even minor visual details with unprecedented clarity.

Samsung and HARMAN have revealed the next iteration of their innovative Digital Cockpit platform at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019. The Digital Cockpit 2019 presents an enriched automotive experience that heightens personalization, connectivity and safety throughout a suite of IoT solutions.

Building on the standard set by last year’s Digital Cockpit, the 2019 version addresses the needs of drivers and passengers alike, providing a seamless link between devices, vehicle and home, with simple controls for ease of use.

An Experience Tailored for Every Passenger

For 2019, the Digital Cockpit has increased the number of displays from three to six, delivering tailored infotainment options to more of the car’s passenger. In addition to a new, independent Passenger Display, two Rear Seat Displays also have been added, allowing passengers in both the front and rear to enjoy personalized contents that will keep them entertained during their travels. The Driver Monitoring System (DMS) and Occupant Monitoring System (OMS) are able to recognize registered drivers and passengers, adjusting the environment – such as screen settings and seat position – to provide an experience personalized to their tastes.

Three screens in the front of the Digital Cockpit show the driver important information and settings. The Cluster Display, situated in front of the driver, is a screen that highlights crucial driving information, such as the speed and oil gauge, with a layout that changes according to the driver’s preference. Between the driver and the front passenger is the Center Information Display, which shows Bixby and SmartThings services for cars, as well as basic apps, like navigation and music. Below that is the Control Display, a screen that oversees a host of functions, including air conditioning and sound volume, and can also be used to set the functions on the knobs of the Digital Cockpit.

By connecting their smartphone to the appropriate display via In-vehicle Samsung DeX, passengers can enjoy a smartphone experience optimized for their display and give their full attention to documents and emails, even while on the move.

Equipped with two knobs positioned in the front of the car and two in the back, the Digital Cockpit offers intuitive setting controls. The knobs have a circular UX, similar to the Galaxy Watch’s hallmark display, and can be customized to configure settings most frequently used by the driver and passengers, such as temperature and speaker volume.

Connectivity throughout the Car

With new Bixby, the in-car experience is even more convenient. The intuitive, conversational AI platform allows drivers and passengers to control their third-party apps – as well as automotive-optimized functions – hands-free inside the car.

As our world becomes increasingly more connected, the Digital Cockpit is strengthening the bond between car and home. Last year’s features supported car-to-home interactions, allowing you to check what’s inside your fridge or start up the washing machine at home, all from the driver’s seat. In addition to adding more devices that can be controlled from the car, the Digital Cockpit now also facilitates home-to-car interactions. With the help of SmartThings and Galaxy Home, users can access vehicle status and controls from the comfort of their own home. This means that you can check fuel levels, start up the engine, and cool down or warm up the inside temperature by turning on the AC before jumping into your car.

Smarter Safety

New features have been implemented to further enhance car safety. Incorporating Samsung Electronics’ Exynos semiconductor, the Mirror Replacement Vision System, Front Facing Camera and Driver Monitoring System assist safe driving in a variety of potential scenarios.

Since last year, the Mirror Replacement Vision System has moved to the front left and right sides of the vehicle to reflect where users habitually look when changing lanes. The system can identify moving objects and gives the driver a wider field of view in the direction of the lane they wish to change into.

The Front Facing Camera detects the environment on the roads ahead. This is particularly useful if the driver wants to make a sudden left turn on an intersection or change lanes, for example. The camera identifies vehicles, pedestrians, lanes and traffic signs while driving and warns the driver of any hazards before they act. Data is shown on the Cluster Display, helping the driver make informed decisions on the road.

The Driver Monitoring System will also transmit a warning sound if it detects dangerous behavior, such as driving while drowsy or sending text messages behind the wheel.

As car design embraces new trends in mobility lifestyle, the Digital Cockpit 2019 represents the next stage in vehicle comfort, connectivity and safety. As the development of 5G technologies continues apace, Samsung’s IoT platform will drive the future of automotive innovation and broaden the horizons of connected living.

“We are committed to deliver world class standards of cinematic experience to our patrons and this association is another step in this direction,” he added.

Over the past few years, movie theatres have been seeing a huge spurt in numbers. Advanced theatre technology is on a growth gradient. With increasing interest in the technology among movie experts and enthusiasts, Samsung launched the innovative Onyx Cinema LED, a move away from the projection systems that were existing hitherto. The Onyx Cinema LED has the potential to deliver unparalleled picture quality, bringing content to life with greater vibrancy and accuracy.

It comes with an array of solutions including the Onyx VIEW, Onyx 3D and Onyx SOUND, providing a uniquely immersive experience. This comprehensive screen and sound solution for movie theatres is poised to revolutionise cinematic experience for every movie enthusiast, whether you are a movie buff, a sports fan, or a fence sitter.

It also accommodates users who wish to utilize their theatres for corporate events, concert and sports event viewing, and gaming competitions.

The screen also offers state-of-the-art Onyx surround sound experience from JBL by Harman International and Samsung’s Audio Lab, bringing scenes to life through’ clear and precise audio. This integration eliminates rearward bias by expanding the audio “sweet spot”, while ensuring that all attendees can enjoy the same experience regardless of seat location, within the theatre.

Onyx VIEW, combined with an infinite contrast ratio and specialized low-tone greyscale settings delivers brighter and more detail-rich content. The screen delivers High Dynamic Range (HDR) to the cinema, showcasing on-screen contents at peak brightness level – nearly 10 times greater than that offered by standard cinema projectors (146fL versus 14fL). The display delivers improved uniformity, free of optical distortion and interference. It is industry’s first DCI-certified cinema display available in variations extending between 5, 10 and 14 metres in width.

The 3D Onyx Cinema LED screen makes 3D movie content more realistic through enhanced brightness and consistent colour amplification. Glass-wearing viewers can now have the benefit of watching subtitle texts, images and even minor visual details with unprecedented clarity, sans the dark, blurry shadowing and potential dizziness that can occur in traditional 3D movie theatres.

Samsung and PVR will extend this partnership and come up with more theatres equipped with Onyx Cinema LED screens in the recent future.
