As Samsung India continues to embrace cutting-edge technologies and interconnected systems, it has become increasingly important to ensure the protection of our valuable data. With this in mind, Samsung R&D Institute – Delhi hosted its first Information Security Week from 18 to 20 July 2023 – a dynamic event dedicated to fostering a security-first mindset among our employees.

This was a unique initiative designed to raise awareness about the ever-evolving cyber threats and equip SRI-Delhi employees with the knowledge, tools and best practices to defend against them through gamification. The three-day event featured a series of engaging activities, including awareness campaigns, quizzes, simulation drills, workshops and interactive sessions with industry experts.

Highlight of Day 1 was the Cyber Warrior contest that unveiled the Cyber Battlefield among SRI-Delhi security enthusiasts in teams of two. They analyzed and presented Information Security risks and possible mitigations from two simulated case studies that described escalating security incidents in business operations. The contest showcased to the participants the evolving threat landscape, dissecting cyber incidents and deliberating best ways to ward off imminent risks. Top two teams were awarded exciting prizes.

Day 2 featured a session on Social Media security awareness and protection against cyber-crimes by Industry Expert from Ernst & Young, India. More than 200 employees attended the virtual session, which deep dived into cyber-crime proliferation using social media, prevention mechanisms, reporting of cyber-crimes and best practices for cyber safe usage of social media. The session helped unlock the secrets of social media security and gave the participants valuable insights to safeguard their digital identities.

The marquee event of Day 3 was an interactive knowledge-sharing session by Cyber Security Experts from Ernst & Young, India. These industry trailblazers gave key insights into the rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape with real world case studies, tools to reinforce cyber security practices in our business and techniques to bolster our cyber resilience. The track on “DevSecOps: Accelerating with Security” explored the transformative DevSecOps approach that combines development, security and operations into a seamless pipeline. The event culminated with a session on Generative AI and its game changing potential for a technology company like ours, security risks and best practices to harness the potential of Generative AI responsibly and securely.

The event witnessed great zeal and enthusiasm from employees. SRI-Delhi Managing Director Mr. Moonsoo Kim said, “This is the first Information Security Week in SRI-Delhi history. I’m sure it will help our people to be more aware and responsible about information security at SRI-Delhi and adopt best practices in their day-to-day work.”

The three power-packed days also saw enthusiastic participation from employees in Security Quizzes and Spot the Security Violation Contest with exciting prizes for the winners. Spear Phishing Simulation Drill was conducted to test phishing detection skills, thereby educating employees to outwit deceptive cyber bait. Daily security myth busters unraveled common misconceptions among employees and debunked security myths that hamper overall security efforts. Thematic awareness snippets on Security FAQs, tools, Malware protection and secure remote work practices reinforced information security know-how among the employees.

Information Security is not a one-time endeavor, rather a continuous journey. We pledge to carry the spirit of the week forward by being the torch bearers of Information Security and applying the lessons learnt. Device attestation can help ensure a device’s identity and health, verifying that it has not been compromised. On-device, mobile hardware-backed device attestation — available on Samsung Galaxy¹ devices and combined with protection from Microsoft Intune — now adds enhanced security and flexibility. For enterprises, this is an extra layer of protection against compromised devices falsely claiming to be known and healthy, gaining access to sensitive corporate data. Flexibility for Enterprises and End Users

For enterprise IT managers, mobile hardware-backed device attestation with Intune provides strong protection for corporate needs without impacting the user experience. With this integration, even highly regulated organizations can adopt a BYOD policy with this additional layer of protection on the Samsung devices widely used by consumers and professionals for work. This joint Samsung-Microsoft solution works on both managed and unmanaged devices regardless of ownership.⁵ Traditional device attestation mainly works on managed devices as it is server-based and requires network connectivity, meaning the entire device has to be enrolled into the corporate system.

With mobile hardware-backed attestation, enterprises can verify a device’s integrity and allow access to the corporate system whether it is managed or unmanaged. Knox Matrix will address this challenge through a revolutionary concept that paves the way for multi-device security for mobile phones, TVs, home appliances and more.

Samsung devices that are empowered with Knox Matrix work to protect one another in a trusted network. If one element is compromised, Knox Matrix will isolate it from the ecosystem in order to protect the others. Having Knox Matrix supported across devices can effectively turn a smart home into a smart shield — the more devices a user has connected, the stronger their overall security.

There are currently three critical features of Knox Matrix that ensure its success. Trust Chain has devices monitoring each other for threats. Credential Sync secures user information as data is moved between devices; and Cross Platform SDK will enable devices on various operating systems and platforms (including but not limited to Android, Tizen and Windows) to join Knox Matrix with consistent security standards. This way, we can keep devices safe even in a hyper-connected world.

Knox Matrix manages all this within a private blockchain, allowing compatible devices to check each other for breaches and ensure safety with intelligent threat monitoring. With these steps in place and more features to be introduced, users will be able to enjoy multiple connected devices safely and conveniently.

The Path to the Next Frontier: Stronger Together

Creating the foundations for the next era of device security requires careful consideration. Knox Matrix’s development is going strong, but there are challenges on the way to the next frontier. These include reconciling the many different types of products, with varying operating systems and security standards, into a frictionless system able to work as one.

As devices become more connected, Samsung must also ensure they are not more complicated to use. With Knox Matrix, we are working to offer users transparency and choice along with protection. Users should be safe in the knowledge that they can make informed decisions about their devices, so they can be protected without hassle. We anticipate that Knox Matrix will alert users of potentially unsafe situations, such as the use of old firmware, offering suggestions for any next steps.

The power of Knox Matrix to protect connected ecosystems will be demonstrated in phases, starting with Samsung Galaxy products, such as smartphones and tablets. Knox Matrix-compatible models will be available from 2024, initially with the three core features mentioned above and more expected to follow via updates. This will expand to cover Samsung’s home appliance devices within the next two to three years, followed by partner devices. Development is already underway for partner device compatibility.

Samsung already has a long history of enabling different kinds of devices to work seamlessly together through SmartThings. Knox Matrix is just the latest development in the innovative history of Samsung Knox security. Samsung most recently introduced Knox Vault, a key security solution that isolates users’ most sensitive data to ensure it never falls into the wrong hands.
