India is a land of innovators. Our sharp mathematical minds are valued worldwide – Indians form a chunk of software professionals in Silicon Valley, and everywhere around the world.

At Samsung too, the brightest minds from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other reputed engineering colleges join us and become part our innovations culture, with the aim of developing meaningful technology that transform people’s lives.

While our young minds do their jobs around the world, Samsung Newsroom India thought of catching up with three young Indian innovators who have identified real world problems and came up with innovative solutions.

A few years ago, Arman Gupta was bothered by a simple household problem that is the worry of every child – spilling juice or food on the floor, and getting a reprimand from mom!

So at 10, the Mumbai boy created what he calls the “Mopping Machine”.

Fortunately for him, his keen interest in science and robotics that was nurtured by his parents from an early age came in handy when developing this machine.

“I had been working on robotics since I was nine. So, I could turn my ideas into innovation,” says Arman.

Arman Gupta: Developed an innovative Mopping Machine.

“Young Innovators need to be encouraged. They are makers and their ability to connect the dots and create innovations is exceptional and needs to be celebrated by schools, parents and society at large,” says Amitoj Singh, Senior Director and Head, Product Innovation Team at Samsung India.

Samay Godika did exactly that: Connect the dots. His inspiration to innovate was a ‘close family member’s’ suffering from an acute neurological disease. So he worked on establishing a correlation between Circadian Rhythms and the effectiveness of medical treatments, which is something that can be potentially useful in preventing diseases like Cancer or even Alzheimer’s.

“I have always been inspired by people who are trying to make a difference in the world and solving problems that are large scale. That’s what innovation should be aimed at,” says the Bengaluru lad who turned 17 last year. He is now working on developing “a Circadian Rhythm wearable and a lamp that can make us more productive.”

Samay Godika: Combining Science with Story Telling.

Now, he wants to change the way science is taught. “Our generation likes to watch engaging videos about interesting concepts. So I am trying to combine science with storytelling. Theatre and science have to go hand-in-hand. I want to tell new stories with science, through science. That’s what innovation is,” adds Samay, who is a student of National Public School – Koramangala, Bengaluru.

Amitoj points out that young innovators have a unique ability to think at the intersection of business, consumer and technology. “I am amazed to see the work of these young innovators. They have a bright future.”

Another innovator is Abhik Saha, an alumnus of Don Bosco English Medium school in Odlabari in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal. His first brush with computers happened in 2011 when he was the only one in his class to fail in the subject. But that’s where the story begins. He did well in the next exam and never looked behind.

Soon he was working with international clients on website designs, and also created a slew of gaming, educational and tutorial apps. He even created a whole computer programming language – Lino.

“I wanted to do more research – on coding, on AI and so many other things. But somehow, I wasn’t really getting the material that could satiate me,” says Abhik. So, he developed a search engine for everyone to find good content.

Abhik Saha:: Innovators need to believe in their ideas.

The 17-year-old who loves product design, has now moved on, and with a friend is working on a new product that will aggregate content from OTT as well as music providers on a common platform.

Singh says what differentiates creative young minds and young innovators is the ability to create experience prototypes.

“Innovators need to believe in their ideas and convert their ideas into prototypes. These can be quick and dirty prototypes to simulate the product experience or high fidelity functional prototypes to test the usability performance. Prototyping helps them to validate their hypothesis and also helps in further evolving the concepts,” he says.

Samsung has engaged with India’s education system at an early stage. Through Samsung Smart Class programme, the company has set up a smart class each in 645 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools across the country. Students at these schools have been coming with several interesting innovations.

Samsung’s three research institutes in Bengaluru and Noida also hold programmes from time to time to encourage young innovators.

Samsung Electronics has completed 20 strong and successful years in India, growing from a one-room, two-employee start-up to the country’s biggest and most loved and trusted consumer brand in India.

In a journey that started in 1995, Samsung set new benchmarks in innovation led manufacturing and consumer marketing, and established itself as a truly national brand. Along the way, it effectively consolidated its position in India with two factories, three R&D centres and a design centre, employing over 45,000 people and establishing the largest sales and service network by any company in the country. By not only fulfilling its commitment to ‘Make in India’, but also living its promise of ‘Make for India’, Samsung has emerged as a truly Indian company at heart.

Mr HC Hong, President and CEO of Samsung India, said, “The last two decades has been a glorious journey for Samsung India. Along the way, we touched millions of hearts and became one of India’s biggest multinational corporations by revenue. This achievement is a result of the collective effort of all our colleagues, partners and consumers who have stood by us and believed in us over these years.”

“Thank you India for helping us successfully reach this great milestone. We believe in co-prosperity, and the entire Samsung India family looks forward to continued support from across the country as we prepare for the Next 20 years and beyond,” Mr Hong added.

Leadership

Samsung India today is a leader in several smart device categories, including Mobile Phones and consumer electronics products such as panel TVs, Refrigerators, ACs, Microwaves, among others. It has been able to bring revolutionary and innovative technologies across all segments, leading change for consumers and enterprise partners, with its innovative products and solutions.

Focused on driving efforts through three pillars of Creative Solutions, New Technologies and Innovative Products, Samsung has introduced game-changing products in the Indian market across product segmentation. Some products that have set benchmarks of quality, innovation and design include the flagship Galaxy S series and Galaxy Note Series of smartphones, SUHD TVs, Smart Convertible Refrigerators and ActivWash+ Washing Machines. The global unveiling of Tizen powered smartphones, Samsung Z1 and Samsung Z3, stand testimony to the commitment to India and the company’s ‘Make for India’ initiative.

Make for India & R&D

Under Samsung’s ‘Make for India’ initiative, several revolutionary products and innovations have been indigenously developed including the Joy Smart TVs, Smart Convertible Refrigerators, Roti and Naan Microwave ovens, Fully Automatic ActiveWash+ Washing Machines and Neo Inverter Air Conditioners.

India has grown into an important global hub of R&D for Samsung; and has demonstrated this by developing several new features for its diverse global portfolio. The R&D facilities, employing over 10,000 of India’s best minds, are amongst the best in the world. The R&D Centres are working on path-breaking innovations not just for India, but also for the rest of the globe.

Revolutionary features such as the ‘Live Broadcast’, ‘Ultra Power Saving Mode’, and ‘Ultra Data Saving Mode’ in the smartphone category have been developed by the Indian R&D team. The Indian R&D team has the largest number of engineers in South West Asia second only to Korea.

Enterprise Business

Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division (EBD) was initiated in 2011 in India that started with a vision to be a trusted advisor to large enterprises and small and medium businesses. The EBD division has smart offerings encompassing devices and solutions tailor made for all business needs – from retail to healthcare, transportation, banking & financial services and insurance (BFSI), education and hospitality and several government programmes. Samsung’s smart devices ensure consumers are always connected with quick access to information.

Corporate Citizenship

‘Nanum’ or ‘Sharing’ is an integral part of Samsung’s culture, and in India too, Samsung has from the very beginning worked hard at turning its success into an opportunity to help others. Consistently recognized for its social initiatives, the company has over the years, largely focused on supporting education and job trainings, health and community welfare. These programs have been tailor-made to the needs of local communities who need a helping hand. One such initiative, Samsung Smart Class, has, since its establishment two years, impacted over 2.9 lakh school-going children across the country, while another initiative, Samsung Technical Institutes, has provided technical training for job opportunities to over 3,500 youth in a single year. The company has already established 300 Smart Class and expects to close fiscal 2016 with 400 Smart Class. It has also set up 18 technical schools.

Through its Sports Ratna programme, Samsung also supports Indian athletes for the Olympics and Asian Games.

Consumer Offer

As the brand completes 20 years in India, Samsung would like to thank its loyal customers for making it a part of their lives with a ‘Celebrating 20 Years’ offer. The 20-day Special Offer will be on between December 11 and December 30.
