India is a land of innovators. Our sharp mathematical minds are valued worldwide – Indians form a chunk of software professionals in Silicon Valley, and everywhere around the world.

At Samsung too, the brightest minds from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other reputed engineering colleges join us and become part our innovations culture, with the aim of developing meaningful technology that transform people’s lives.

While our young minds do their jobs around the world, Samsung Newsroom India thought of catching up with three young Indian innovators who have identified real world problems and came up with innovative solutions.

A few years ago, Arman Gupta was bothered by a simple household problem that is the worry of every child – spilling juice or food on the floor, and getting a reprimand from mom!

So at 10, the Mumbai boy created what he calls the “Mopping Machine”.

Fortunately for him, his keen interest in science and robotics that was nurtured by his parents from an early age came in handy when developing this machine.

“I had been working on robotics since I was nine. So, I could turn my ideas into innovation,” says Arman.

Arman Gupta: Developed an innovative Mopping Machine.

“Young Innovators need to be encouraged. They are makers and their ability to connect the dots and create innovations is exceptional and needs to be celebrated by schools, parents and society at large,” says Amitoj Singh, Senior Director and Head, Product Innovation Team at Samsung India.

Samay Godika did exactly that: Connect the dots. His inspiration to innovate was a ‘close family member’s’ suffering from an acute neurological disease. So he worked on establishing a correlation between Circadian Rhythms and the effectiveness of medical treatments, which is something that can be potentially useful in preventing diseases like Cancer or even Alzheimer’s.

“I have always been inspired by people who are trying to make a difference in the world and solving problems that are large scale. That’s what innovation should be aimed at,” says the Bengaluru lad who turned 17 last year. He is now working on developing “a Circadian Rhythm wearable and a lamp that can make us more productive.”

Samay Godika: Combining Science with Story Telling.

Now, he wants to change the way science is taught. “Our generation likes to watch engaging videos about interesting concepts. So I am trying to combine science with storytelling. Theatre and science have to go hand-in-hand. I want to tell new stories with science, through science. That’s what innovation is,” adds Samay, who is a student of National Public School – Koramangala, Bengaluru.

Amitoj points out that young innovators have a unique ability to think at the intersection of business, consumer and technology. “I am amazed to see the work of these young innovators. They have a bright future.”

Another innovator is Abhik Saha, an alumnus of Don Bosco English Medium school in Odlabari in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal. His first brush with computers happened in 2011 when he was the only one in his class to fail in the subject. But that’s where the story begins. He did well in the next exam and never looked behind.

Soon he was working with international clients on website designs, and also created a slew of gaming, educational and tutorial apps. He even created a whole computer programming language – Lino.

“I wanted to do more research – on coding, on AI and so many other things. But somehow, I wasn’t really getting the material that could satiate me,” says Abhik. So, he developed a search engine for everyone to find good content.

Abhik Saha:: Innovators need to believe in their ideas.

The 17-year-old who loves product design, has now moved on, and with a friend is working on a new product that will aggregate content from OTT as well as music providers on a common platform.

Singh says what differentiates creative young minds and young innovators is the ability to create experience prototypes.

“Innovators need to believe in their ideas and convert their ideas into prototypes. These can be quick and dirty prototypes to simulate the product experience or high fidelity functional prototypes to test the usability performance. Prototyping helps them to validate their hypothesis and also helps in further evolving the concepts,” he says.

Samsung has engaged with India’s education system at an early stage. Through Samsung Smart Class programme, the company has set up a smart class each in 645 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools across the country. Students at these schools have been coming with several interesting innovations.

Samsung’s three research institutes in Bengaluru and Noida also hold programmes from time to time to encourage young innovators.

DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics, today launched the Next Generation flagship Galaxy S10 at a grand event in New Delhi.

Mr. Koh, who is visiting India for his second successive flagship launch after the Galaxy Note9 in August, said he was really excited to be back in India, among millions of Samsung fans. He was addressing a packed audience comprising media, partners and Samsung fans, at the event which was also live-streamed around the world.

“Nowhere is this more apparent than right here in India, where we have invested heavily. We are the only device maker that is truly ‘Made in India’. We have been making phones here locally since 2007 at the World’s Largest Mobile Factory in Noida. And India is home to our Largest Experience Store, which we opened in September 2018 – in Bengaluru,” he said.

Samsung is partnering India to fulfill its promise of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for India’, Mr. Koh said. With the inauguration of the Noida factory, the World’s Largest Mobile Factory, Samsung has set its eyes to ‘Make for the World’.

“In India, we are excited by the opportunities, as more and more consumers are embracing the age of digital transformation,” he said.

Samsung is focused on consumers, and is the only global company in India that caters to smartphone needs of consumers across the spectrum. In India, Samsung manufactures basic feature phones, as well as next generation smartphones such as the Galaxy S10.

“We know that a one-size-fits-all approach is no longer enough. Millennial and Gen Z consumers want choice,” said Mr Koh.

In the premium category, Samsung has seen tremendous success in the country, with the Galaxy. Galaxy Note9, launched last year, is doing extremely well. “We have captured more than half of the market share in the premium segment! So, thank you!” he said.

Last year, Mr. Koh had promised that Samsung will bring its latest innovations across its range. True to his promise, Samsung has dazzled Indian consumers with great devices in the last six months.

“Indian consumers have quickly adopted Samsung Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9. They love the world-first innovations in the A Series. Like an impressive triple and quad cameras and captivating display that lets them explore, snap and share experiences on their terms,” he said, at the launch of Galaxy S10.

Indian consumers are not only the first to embrace new technologies, they are also the first to receive them. In January, India was the first market to get the powerful new Galaxy M series.

“Designed specifically for tech savvy millennials, our India-first Galaxy M series has had a great positive response from consumers. By listening and responding to your feedback we are creating meaningful innovation that meets the needs of the market,” Mr Koh said.

This is the tenth year of the Galaxy S series, which has stood for premium innovation – offering consumers an incredible experience, and the ability to find the device that’s right for them.

Mr Koh said Samsung’s vision is to be the innovator of new mobile experiences that flow with us seamlessly and continuously. “By harnessing the power of 5G and AI we will pioneer a new generation of immersive, personal and intelligent experiences. Experiences that reach across every device, platform and brand.”

The Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi today inaugurated Samsung Electronics’ new mobile phone manufacturing facility – The World’s Largest Mobile Factory – in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Samsung India also launched its ‘Make for the World’ initiative, whereby it aims to export mobile handsets produced in India, to overseas markets.

With this new facility, Samsung will double its current capacity for mobile phones in Noida from 68 million units a year to 120 million units a year, in a phase-wise expansion that will be completed by 2020.

Samsung has been manufacturing mobile phones in India since 2007, and is the only brand that is truly made in India. Samsung India has been populating Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) right from its inception and is aligned with the Government of India’s Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) goals.

On June 7, 2017, Samsung had announced an investment of INR 4,915 crore to add new capacity at the Noida plant, under the Uttar Pradesh government’s Mega Policy.

“Our Noida factory, the world’s largest mobile factory, is a symbol of Samsung’s strong commitment to India, and a shining example of the success of the Government’s ‘Make in India’ programme. Samsung is a long-term partner of India. We ‘Make in India’, ‘Make for India’ and now, we will ‘Make for the World’. We are aligned with Government policies and will continue to seek their support to achieve our dream of making India a global export hub for mobile phones,” Mr. HC Hong, Chief Executive Officer, Samsung India, said.

The Noida factory, which was set up in 1996 is one of the first global electronics manufacturing facilities set up in India. A bigger manufacturing plant, spread over 129,000 sq. metres, will help Samsung meet the growing demand for its innovative products and services across the country and also fulfil the Company’s goal of making India an export hub for the world.

As a true market leader, Samsung continues to provide cutting edge technology and enriching experiences to Indian consumers with its mobile phones made at the Noida plant, supported by a large ecosystem of suppliers in the Delhi-National Capital Region and partners across the country. All Samsung mobile phones, including the flagship Galaxy S9, S9+ and Galaxy Note8, are made at the Noida plant.

Since its entry into India in 1995, Samsung has set new benchmarks in innovation led manufacturing and consumer marketing, and established itself as a truly national brand. It has consolidated its market leadership in the country with two factories, in Noida and Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, five R&D centers and one design center. These are supported by a strong network of over 1.5 lakh retail outlets and 3,000 customer service points, the largest by any company in the country.

In October, 2016, Samsung launched 535 service vans to provide timely and quality customer service to consumers across the country, touching every remote village in all 6,000 talukas. Samsung has emerged as a truly Indian company at heart by fulfilling its commitment to ‘Make in India’ and living its promise of ‘Make for India’.

Since its entry into India in 1995, Samsung has set new benchmarks in innovation-led manufacturing and consumer marketing, and established itself as a truly national brand. It has effectively consolidated its position in India with two factories—in Noida and Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, five R&D centres and one design centre in Noida, employing over 70,000 people and expanding its network to over 1.5 lakh retail outlets.

It has also launched service vans to provide timely and quality customer service to consumers across rural India, expanding its network to over 3,000 service points, the largest by any company in the country. By not only fulfilling its commitment to ‘Make in India’, but also living its promise of ‘Make for India’, Samsung has emerged as a truly Indian company at heart.
