Samsung Electronics today introduced Auto Blocker, a new security tool for Samsung Galaxy users designed to keep their devices protected in the way that best fits their lifestyle.

Recently released on One UI 6 as part of Samsung Galaxy’s expanded arsenal of security and privacy innovations, Auto Blocker is an opt-in package of additional security measures that gives users more choice as they explore the customizations enabled by Samsung Galaxy’s open ecosystem.

Putting the Choice in Users’ Hands

“At Samsung we constantly strive to keep our users safe from security attacks, and with the introduction of Auto Blocker users can continue to enjoy the benefits of our open ecosystem, knowing that their mobile experience is secured,” said Dr. Seungwon Shin, EVP & Head of Security Team, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “We always seek to empower our users to choose for themselves what best suits their needs — rather than us deciding on their behalf, and Auto Blocker is no exception to that.”

One of Auto Blocker’s features is the prevention of app installations from unauthorized sources,1 known as sideloading. There are many benefits to intentional sideloading, such as enhanced customization and control over a device’s functionality. Those who love to safely sideload will experience no change as the feature is off by default. For those not in the habit of sideloading or extensive customization, activating Auto Blocker can provide additional peace of mind by stalling the rise of social engineering attacks like voice phishing, where attackers could talk users into installing malicious software.

Auto Blocker has a range of additional controls, including turning on app security checks2 to help detect potential malware and prevent harmful commands and software installations by USB cable. This can help protect users in a situation where someone has physical access to their device, like when charging a phone at an airport.

With this feature also comes an update to Message Guard, which mitigates Zero Click attacks, or direct image messages hiding malicious code. Initially launched for messaging apps from Google and Samsung, it now can help protect users using popular third party apps.3 This way, users have greater choice over the apps they can safely use.

Pushing the Industry Forward With New Security Standards

Samsung sets the foundation for a safer, more secure mobile experience for Galaxy users, and Auto Blocker takes this one step further by combining industry-leading security standards with user choice to allow customers to control their device their way. As the latest feature to be added to Samsung’s suite of security and privacy innovations, Auto Blocker further optimizes the mobile experience for users across the Galaxy ecosystem.

Auto Blocker is available now on Samsung Galaxy devices compatible with One UI 6.

1 Authorized sources include Google Play and Galaxy Store.
2 Currently not available on US carrier models.
3 Messenger, Telegram, KakaoTalk, WhatsApp.

At some point, all bicycle owners have experienced the anxiety of potentially losing their bikes. It’s often difficult to track down a missing bicycle, leading to approximately 35,000 bikes1 per year being abandoned on the streets and eventually ending up in landfills in Korea.

Samsung Electronics is offering a new solution to help alleviate these concerns for bike owners. Recently announced at the Samsung Developer Conference 2023 (SDC23), the Galaxy SmartTag2 — a mobile accessory that tells users where their belongings are located based on Bluetooth and SmartThings Find without the need for GPS — is a new way to help prevent bike loss.

With a much smaller size compared to the previous model, the upgraded tag can be easily attached anywhere. The Galaxy SmartTag2’s search location has become even more accurate, thanks to ultra-wideband (UWB) support. With Lost Mode, your contact information and messages can be shared with anyone who locates your belongings when he or she tags the Galaxy SmartTag2 with an NFC-enabled smartphone.

Read on to learn how the Galaxy SmartTag2 can help you get into gear for your ride and safeguard your bicycle.

STEP 1. Connect the Galaxy SmartTag2 to Your Galaxy Device, Then Attach the Tag to Your Bike

To activate the Galaxy SmartTag2, start by registering the device in your SmartThings app. The process is straightforward: the SmartTag2 will automatically be detected when placed near your Galaxy smartphone or tablet. Simply bring the tag to your phone or tablet during the initial registration, and a pop-up window with installation instructions will seamlessly guide you through setup.

Featuring UWB technology, the Galaxy SmartTag2 offers the Find Using Camera feature, which uses augmented reality (AR) to help you find your things with greater accuracy and ease. After tapping Find Using Camera, you can track down your lost bike by following the arrows on your screen.

▲ You can find your bike using the Find Using Camera feature.

STEP 4. Add an Extra Layer of Security With Lost Mode

Lost Mode adds another level of security in protecting your bicycle. With this new feature, you can add your contact information and messages — making them accessible to anyone who finds your bike and scans the Galaxy SmartTag2 using an NFC reader on their smartphone.

Thanks to the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) capabilities, the tag will detect and send notifications to other Galaxy users passing by your bike. Lost Mode also prevents other Galaxy users from connecting to your Galaxy SmartTag2 by locking the pairing process.

▲ When you scan the Galaxy SmartTag2 with an NFC reader on your smartphone, you can access the owner’s contact information along with any personalized messages.

Samsung Electronics, with its wide range of products and services, remains committed to delivering industry-leading innovations that enhance and redefine the lives of its users around the world. At this year’s Samsung Developer Conference 2023 (SDC23) — held on October 5 in San Francisco, CA — the company unveiled the latest advancements to its software and device services. Samsung executives and employees discussed the next-generation technologies equipped within Samsung products, enhancing the way users interact with the platforms and innovative products from both Samsung and its partners.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with five prominent SDC23 speakers to delve deep into some of the company’s updates and how they add convenience to and revamp the user experience.

SmartThings and Matter: Offering an Even Better Connected Experience

Charles Kim of the SmartThings Team highlighted the updates to Samsung’s SmartThings home ecosystem, including expanded support for Matter devices, and discussed how SmartThings is leading the new era of smart homes through its advanced multi-device network.

Q. SmartThings has been working hard to create a hyper-connected experience for customers based on seamless interoperability with third-party devices. Could you discuss a few of the most notable announcements unveiled during this year’s SDC?

Matter stands as the universal IP-based communications protocol for smart home IoT devices, and is supported by major corporations all over the world. When it comes to expansive smart home experiences, Samsung has been at the forefront of widening its device network, which was furthered by its added support for Matter devices beginning last year. To expand on this, we are now offering an enhanced Matter-compatible ecosystem that will allow developers to create new apps, hubs and clouds.

One of our first steps is to expand the application of Matter to a broader range of devices and introduce new features to these devices to enhance its capabilities. These features include adding control functionalities for Matter-compatible devices, which support Matter Bridge1 devices as well as over-the-air (OTA)2 and Multi-Hub Network.3 One of Matter’s key advantages is its compatibility with various platforms from different companies. As such, it facilitates easier usage of the Multi-Admin4 feature, allowing administrators to efficiently control multiple devices simultaneously from a single platform.

To take innovation further, we plan to introduce an Application Programming Interface (API) for controlling Matter devices via the SmartThings Hub — making it easier for developers to utilize Samsung’s platform. In addition, the Software Development Kit (SDK) will allow the seamless integration of Matter devices within the SmartThings platform.

We hope that this will empower more developers to deliver new, advanced services to users that utilize Matter devices within the SmartThings platform.

Q. How will SmartThings contribute to the evolution of smart homes in the future?

Our vision for SmartThings encompasses various dimensions of home automation. Currently, users can control Samsung and third-party IoT devices in their homes through SmartThings, which gives them the ability to optimize and automate certain functions among connected devices. Looking forward to the future, smart homes are poised to elevate personalized home experiences by harnessing the power of device-connected AI and machine learning, which will deliver users ultra-personalized home services that meet their unique needs and preferences.

One of these future-forward settings is Ambient Sensing, which recognizes the space the user is in and automatically adjusts to the user’s preferred settings. Additionally, we intend to advance Edge Computing technology to ensure a stable and secure connection experience for users, enabling SmartThings to serve as a main hub for such services. Our aim is to help users enjoy a higher quality of life, and we will continue enhancing SmartThings in order to achieve this goal.

HDR10+ GAMING: Delivering a Perfectly Immersive Gaming Experience

Alongside the rapid expansion of the gaming market came an increased demand for an enhanced gaming environment. In line with these trends, Samsung has been working with leading game content companies to develop advanced visual technologies, setting a standard for the industry. Suzie Hyun of Samsung Research America spoke about HDR10+ GAMING.

Q. As game image quality technology continues to advance, what are the advantages of using HDR10+ GAMING while playing games?

In comparison to the conventional Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) format, High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays images at a higher brightness, greater contrast and with a wider color range — accentuating all on-screen details and making gameplay even more immersive.

From the standpoint of a developer, an ideal HDR gaming experience provides jaw-dropping realism, fully immersing users in the heart of the action. Equipped with HDR10+ GAMING technology, game creators are able to provide next-level immersion, drawing users deeper into the game world.

On the user side, HDR10+ GAMING technology automatically sets the game and display to optimal HDR settings, ensuring a consistent, stunning and engaging gaming session from start to end.

Q. How is HDR10+ different when watching videos and gaming?

HDR10+ GAMING technology delivers cutting-edge gaming experiences by combining ultra-responsiveness, an important factor for ideal gameplay, with leading image quality optimization technology. Equipped with these advanced technologies, HDR10+ GAMING provides immersive gaming experiences and allows users to experience the content as the game creator intended.

The Software Platform Innovation for Home Appliances: Tizen

The Tizen operating system will be extended and is set to be integrated into a broader range of home appliances. SeongIl Hahm of the S/W Development Team explained Tizen and its distinguished services that upgrade user experiences.

Q. What role does Tizen play in home appliances?

The landscape of home appliances has undergone a remarkable transformation, expanding beyond customers’ imagination. With the integration of the latest AI technologies, these appliances can perform a variety of unique functions. For example, appliances can detect food, the user’s voice and presence using high-tech cameras, microphones and Neural Processing Units (NPUs).

In driving these innovations forward, Tizen — Samsung’s open and flexible operating system (OS) — will help evolve home appliances and expand their capabilities. Samsung plans to expand Tizen to home appliances equipped with even larger screens than before, which will allow users to intuitively check the status of their devices and control them, as well as monitor other devices connected to SmartThings.

Tizen not only supports network, multimedia, web and security capabilities, but it also offers flexible software performance based on different hardware modules across product lines. It provides a web and development environment that is most commonly used by developers so helps them to adopt services easier.

Q. During SDC23, new technologies such as on-device AI and AI Home Edge Hub were introduced. How will these advancements elevate the capabilities of home appliances?

On-device AI-support signifies the integrated AI engine within home appliances, supporting round-the-clock deep learning inference. Home appliances generate a wealth of information, far beyond what users may realize. Learning from this information can significantly improve the user experience. Examples of AI functionalities include how refrigerators and air conditioners can save energy by predicting the temperature, how vacuum cleaners adjust the cleaning mode according to the floor type, and how washers and dryers can optimize laundering according to the clothing material.

Another important consideration that AI performance levels vary among different home appliances led us to work on developing AI Home Edge Hub. By device-to-device sharing of AI capabilities, it significantly enhance the performance of each device.

To illustrate this, let’s imagine that an AI inference task was delivered to the Family Hub, which is the most smart appliance nearby. Upon receiving this information, the Family Hub transmits it to the robot vacuum cleaner, which then notifies the user when the cleaning process is complete.

Many of these futuristic scenarios will become realizable through cutting-edge software innovation.

Smart Homes More Connected Than Ever

Samsung’s vision of the connected home is deeply rooted in SmartThings and open innovation. Since applying the Matter standard last year, the total number of SmartThings users who have connected compatible products and services has increased to over 290 million. Now, the SmartThings Home API1 makes it easier than ever for developers to create SmartThings-based apps, and the SmartThings Context API provides new ways to leverage AI and sensing technology for better user experiences.

Samsung is embedding SmartThings Hub functionality into existing and new products, including Samsung Sound Bars and Smart TVs, so users can quickly and easily start their smart homes from their connected devices. This Multi-Hub Network also means when it’s time to replace or add a device, there is a powerful and stable network of others ready to keep the smart home continue. These experiences are enhanced further with Samsung’s work with Aqara, who joined Samsung onstage to share how its Internet of Things (IoT) sensors work with SmartThings to create more intuitive and accessible smart homes.

Samsung also announced the second-generation SmartTag2 at SDC23. With battery life lasting up to 700 days,2 an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance and a streamlined and smaller design, the SmartTag2 can follow lost items through rain, snow, and even underground with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity.

Bixby is increasingly integrating with SmartThings. This year, Samsung announced more intuitive command control for multi-device environment. Now, even if multiple devices are connected in the same space, Bixby intuitively understands which device is best suited to each command, with a deeper understanding of every scenario. In the future, Bixby will evolve to provide personalized experiences with simple commands by understanding users’ languages widely and optimizing their intentions.

As a growing number of connected devices come together to build these new experiences, security and privacy is more important than ever. Last year, Samsung introduced Knox Matrix, Samsung’s blockchain-based security vision for a future wherein devices connected in an ecosystem can protect each other — as well as their users. This year, Samsung is updating Knox Matrix’s key features including Credential Sync and Trust Chain. Samsung is also bringing Knox Vault to more devices including Samsung Neo QLED 8K TVs in 2023 and select Galaxy A series smartphones that launch with One UI 6 or later in 2024. Engineered for an age of hyperconnectivity, these advancements enable greater convenience and choice for users, empowering them with added ways to safely do what they love.

Tizen OS: Maximizing Developer Opportunities

Over the past decade, Tizen has effectively powered digital screens including TVs, home appliances, monitors and signs. This year, Samsung announced that Tizen is coming to even more devices including home appliances with a 7-inch screen while also boosting experiences with on-device AI and the Home AI Edge Hub. With Home AI Edge technology, appliances with lower computing power can request AI services to the devices in the house with strong computing resource such as CPUs and NPUs. This will ultimately make all devices in the home intelligent.

Tizen is also powering Samsung’s immersive gaming experiences, including the Samsung Gaming Hub which now supports 3,000 games on the cloud platform — a 300% increase since it was launched last year. And, with HDR10+ GAMING and Samsung’s IRIS tool for graphics developers, there’s never been a better time to explore the virtual worlds of gaming on Tizen.

Tizen is also offering increased support for the rising open-source semiconductor architecture RISC-V and the programming language RUST, alongside new features like the Remote Test Lab to test apps and experiences on Samsung TV devices in the cloud.

One UI 6: Enabling Your Galaxy, Your Way

The new One UI 6 offers more ways to make your smartphone experience easier to navigate, simpler to manage and a little more you. It includes a revamped Quick panel with a refreshed, intuitive look and feel with settings grouped together for easier use. With One UI 6 a new exclusive typeface has also been introduced: One UI Sans, to improve readability on digital screens. For photos, One UI 6 analyzes the photo you are viewing and suggests the most relevant AI editing tools all within one easy to access tool. And with Samsung Studio, you can make multi-layered edits to your video like adding text, stickers, and music exactly where and when you want within the video.

With its ability to provide a personalized and intuitive user experience alongside streamlined capabilities, One UI 6 truly lets users get more out of their smartphones than ever before.

Taking Health Care to the Next Level

Samsung Electronics further used SDC23 to share its enhanced health solutions based on the power of connectivity. New digital health experiences provided by SmartThings and Samsung Food, and a personalized sleep environment are enabled through the better connection of users, devices and services. To build on these experiences, Samsung announced its continued commitment of the Samsung Privileged Health SDK, which enables developers and partners to create digital health solutions using the Samsung BioActive Sensor.

Additionally, Samsung highlighted its latest clinical research collaborations with Brigham & Women’s Hospital, the MIT Media Lab, Tulane University and Samsung Medical Center with MIT Media Lab’s Dr. Pattie Maes joined Samsung onstage.

Samsung also shared more details of its new Samsung Food service, including the Food AI and Vision AI technologies, which offer a comprehensive food experience across all connected devices.

Samsung Electronics today unveiled a range of security innovations across its ecosystem of products and services. With the release of One UI 6, these innovations include updates to Samsung Knox Matrix with passkeys and end-to-end encryption for backed-up and restored Samsung Cloud data, and the expansion of Samsung Knox Vault to the wider device ecosystem. These advancements are engineered for an age of hyperconnectivity, ensuring that as we enter a world where multiple devices connect and share information with each other, the security aspect is never compromised. The updates were announced at the annual Samsung Developer Conference 2023 (SDC23), which brings together developers, creators and designers to explore Samsung’s powerful and seamless connected experiences. At the event, Samsung was able to showcase how these innovations will work to push the industry forward and empower users with more ways to safely do what they love, today and tomorrow.

“The strongest security and privacy innovations can help protect your everyday mobile experience as well as your device,” said Dr. Seungwon Shin, EVP & Head of Security Team, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “We strive to keep more users safe in more ways than ever, and our latest security innovations mean users can live life with greater options and less effort — so life can truly open up possibilities, now and for years to come.”

Secure Convenience in a Connected World

The release of One UI 6 on Galaxy devices and an update to Samsung Knox Matrix1 work to further realize Samsung’s vision of a future where connected devices can protect each other within an ecosystem.

Last year, we announced that Knox Matrix would support Trust Chain, which will enable connected devices to intelligently monitor each other for security threats, and send notifications to other devices if one is ever attacked. This meant that if a hacker were to target a device, Knox Matrix could detect the threat and isolate that device from other devices to keep the rest of the system safe.

At SDC23, Samsung is announcing updates to another key element of Knox Matrix — Credential Sync, which can help protect sensitive information as it moves between multiple devices, such as Samsung Galaxy devices, TVs and Family Hub refrigerators. With the introduction of One UI 6, Credential Sync brings users an easy and secure way to sync their identities and credentials between their Samsung devices. Also now available within Credential Sync is end-to-end encryption of backed-up and restored Samsung Cloud data.2 This ensures the data can only be encrypted or decrypted on a user’s devices, meaning nobody can see it but the user — even if a server is compromised or account details are stolen. Starting early 2024, Samsung Galaxy devices will also implement end-to-end encryption when users sync their data with Samsung Cloud.3

As part of Credential Sync, Samsung has also developed new ways to manage and secure identities and credentials for a future hyperconnected world in the form of passkeys: digital credentials that can be used as authentication for websites and apps. Through One UI 6, Samsung Pass has been updated with the ability to use passkeys,4 marking a significant step towards a passwordless future where passkeys replace traditional passwords to provide an experience that is:

Faster: Users can save time on typing their account username into their device by instead quickly selecting the account they wish to sign into

Easier: Once passkeys are registered, users can easily switch over to a new connected device with no requirement to sign up all over again

More secure: Passkeys only work on users’ registered websites and applications, ensuring protection against phishing attacks from malicious sites or apps

Knox Matrix realizes this revolutionary step in the evolution of passwords by enabling a convenient way to share passkeys across multiple devices without sacrificing security. Based on FIDO’s international standards, passkeys enable users to use Samsung Pass on their smartphone to sign into apps and websites through biometric sensors, such as fingerprints. With One UI 6, passkeys are able to be held in escrow until specific conditions are met — like when a PIN, password or lock screen pattern of a user’s previous device is entered on their Samsung Galaxy smartphone. These updated escrow functions within Knox Matrix will eliminate the need for users to remember current passwords or reset forgotten ones, providing convenience and stronger security when sharing credentials between connected devices.

Powerful Security Innovations on More Samsung Devices

Besides innovating to secure the device ecosystems of the future, Samsung is also democratizing its most powerful security innovations for devices today. Samsung Knox Vault is being strengthened through the expansion beyond flagship devices to protect more customers and give them greater choice in the devices they can safely use.

Knox Vault can help protect the most critical data on a device, including lock screen information, such as PIN codes, passwords and patterns. It constructs a secure execution environment that is physically isolated from the system’s main processor and memory and is effective from the moment a user registers their lock screen — thus users can enjoy the security they need without hassle. Knox Vault can help protect users’ security keys which encrypt their private data stored in the device, ensuring total safety — even if the device is lost or stolen.

A hardware-based and tamper-resistant solution, Samsung Knox Vault was created to safeguard a user’s private data against not only software-based hacking, but also hardware attacks using high-end professional tools. Originally launched on Samsung Galaxy flagship devices including S series, Z series, S FE series smartphones and Tab S series tablets, Knox Vault is being expanded to Samsung Neo QLED 8K TVs in 2023, and the wider Galaxy ecosystem including Galaxy A series smartphones with One UI 6 or later5 in 2024.

Your Secure Ecosystem, Expanded

The wide range of powerful security measures make Samsung Galaxy devices better at ensuring user privacy, addressing the need for convenience in a hyperconnected society with the backing of a true commitment to strong user security. One UI 6 also brings updates to Galaxy’s Security and Privacy Dashboard, making it easier than ever for users to see and control what is happening to their data. The latest security and privacy innovations announced at SDC23 are built on top of Galaxy’s secure foundation: security at every level from the chips up to the apps, real-time threat detection and collaborative protection with trusted partners.

Ideas and notes are easy to capture with Galaxy’s signature in-box, IP68-rated S Pen. Like the Galaxy Tab S9 series, the Tab S9 FE and S9 FE+ include a wide variety of creative tools and apps, including fan-favorites like Goodnotes,9 LumaFusion,10 Clip Studio Paint,11 and more.
The Galaxy Tab S9 FE series is available in four fashionable colors13: Mint, Silver, Gray and Lavender.

Galaxy Buds FE: Superior Sound, Powerful ANC and Ergonomic Design Expand the Excellent Audio Experience to More Users

Galaxy Buds FE bring Samsung’s industry-leading sound experience to more users. Its powerful bass offers deep and rich sound that allows you to enjoy music the way the artist intended, while powerful Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Ambient Sound enable you to hear more of what you love and less of what you don’t. Also, automatic personalized beamforming of the advanced three microphone system, along with AI-powered Deep Neutral Network (DNN), separates your voice from unwanted background noise for clearer calls.

Boasting the longest battery life in the Buds series, Galaxy Buds FE provide up to 8.5 hours of playback with earbuds, and total up to 30 hours including the charging case.14 Even when using ANC, users can get up to 6 hours of playback with earbuds, and total up to 21 hours including the case. Inspired by the iconic and ergonomic design of the series, Galaxy Buds FE are engineered to be comfortable enough to wear for a long time, and enable a more customized fit with three different sizes of ear tips and two different sizes for wingtips.

Galaxy Buds FE are available in two distinct, modern colors: Graphite and White.15

One Seamlessly Connected Galaxy Ecosystem

With new FE devices, it’s easier than ever to experience the full power of the connected Galaxy ecosystem. Productivity is intuitive with Multi Control,16 which enables users to drag and drop content easily between multiple Galaxy devices. Copy and paste or drag and drop between smartphone and tablet. When creativity strikes, simply transfer videos or images from smartphone to tablet with Quick Share, for easier editing.

When it is time for immersive entertainment, Galaxy Buds FE are the perfect companions. Auto Switch intelligently switches sound between your smartphone, tablet, and even watch and TV – based on your usage with no manual adjustments required.17 Also, SmartThings Find helps you track down misplaced Buds and also sound an alarm should they be left behind.18

All these devices and connectivity capabilities uphold Samsung’s commitment to providing secure and private experiences. Galaxy S23 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE series are backed by Samsung Knox protection, meaning personal information is kept that way, by default.

Mindfully Crafted for the Planet

With the latest FE devices, Samsung advances its commitment to the environment by scaling its latest purposeful innovations throughout the ecosystem.

Galaxy S23 FE features a wide variety of recycled materials19 found in both internal and external device components,20 including pre-consumer recycled aluminum and glass, and post-consumer recycled plastic sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels, and PET bottles.

Galaxy Tab S9 FE series are also comprised of recycled materials. Select internal and external components21 use pre-consumer recycled aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastics.

The new Galaxy S23 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE series are designed to last with four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates. To enhance longevity, users can also leverage programs such as Samsung Care+,22 a support service for accidental damages, repairs, and more.

Supporting more positive impact for the planet does not stop at smartphones and tablets. Galaxy Buds FE incorporate post-consumer recycled plastics sourced from discarded fishing nets and water barrels in its product design.23
