Samsung India today announced the national shortlist for the top 20 teams for its flagship CSR programme ‘Solve for Tomorrow’ 2024. The teams, which are set to advance to the subsequent national round, represent great geographical diversity comprising individuals from 12 states and 2 Union Territories across India.  Few of the participants hail from some of the remotest locations, such as Imphal in Manipur, East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya and Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh.

In the 3^rd edition of the programme, students submitted their ideas under two overarching themes — ‘Community and Inclusion’ and ‘Environment and Sustainability.’ About 20% of the ideas in the school track focus on issues relating to education and access to resources for the underprivileged communities, challenges around experiential learning and digital literacy. About 25% of the ideas in the youth track revolve around the issues of water conservation, arsenic pollution, water wastage, and ecological imbalance around river basins. In addition, nearly 40% of the ideas focus on curbing air pollution caused by traffic, lack of waste management methods, increase of single-use plastics, and wildfires.

“Samsung’s flagship CSR programme, ‘Solve for Tomorrow,’ has focused this year on empowering both school and college students to address real-world challenges using technology. This year we focused on encouraging participation from the remotest corners of the country, and we are excited about the representation coming from a diverse geography. We wish the best to the teams moving ahead for the innovation walks at our offices and R&D centres and finally for the national pitch event at IIT Delhi,” said SP Chun, Corporate Vice President, Samsung Southwest Asia.

These national 20 teams get a unique opportunity to attend an innovation walk at Samsung India offices, its R&D centres and design centre. Once they complete their innovation walk, these 20 teams participate at a national pitch event where they will compete within their respective tracks and pitch to the national jury comprising of Samsung experts & leaders.

This year, the shortlists have been done regionally which has helped the competition reach out to the next generation of Indian Innovators residing in the remotest towns of the country such as Khurda in Odisha Kachar and Kamrup Rural, in Assam and Amreli in Gujarat. The top 50 ideas submitted in the Youth Track covering the ‘environment and sustainability’ theme are not only unconventional but also extremely future-focused. Issues like deforestation, plastic waste management, marine pollution, carbon emissions, unsustainable packaging, and poor water management came across as the areas most critical to the youth.

The ‘School’ track, on the other hand, submitted their ideas under the ‘community and inclusion’ theme. Their ideas focus on out of the box solutions for critical issues such as mental illness among school students, lack of an inclusive environment for the LGBTQ community, poor access to digital literacy among economically weaker sections of the society, and the existing gap between academic learning and technical skilling to become job-ready.

A total of 232 participants representing the 100 teams will now gear up for the next phase of the ‘Solve For Tomorrow’ competition where they will be be equipped with presentation and effective communication skills through expert training and mentoring. This will help them prepare for the regional rounds commencing mid-July.

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow has grown purposefully this year by supporting themes such as the environment, community and inclusion. The separate tracks – youth and school – have given equal opportunities and a level-playing field to all the competing teams. It is incredible to see such thought-provoking ideas coming from young minds across the nation. Together with Samsung, our endeavour is to encourage a problem-solving mindset in the next generation that will act as a catalyst in improving the start-up ecosystem in the country,” said Prof. Preeti Ranjan Panda, MD, FITT, IIT-Delhi.

The next stage will witness two teams from five regions – north, east, west, south, and north-east – being selected in each track forming a national pool of 20 teams.The Top 20 teams will undergo an intensive series of training along with rigorous mentorship programmes by Samsung and industry experts to enhance their technical and soft-skills. These teams will also attend an ‘Innovation Walk’ at the Samsung Regional Headquarters in Gurugram, and Samsung R&D Centres across India.

Team Udaan: Revolutionizing Menstrual Health with Eco-Friendly Solutions

Team Udaan from Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2022, comprising Prisha Dubey, Anupriya Nayak, and Vanalika Konwar, has tackled a crucial yet often overlooked issue in menstrual health. Their project focuses on creating eco-friendly, affordable, and washable sanitary pads using shredded sugarcane bagasse, a byproduct of sugar factories. This innovative approach not only offers a sustainable alternative to traditional sanitary products but also addresses the social stigma surrounding menstruation.

The team’s pads are designed to be extremely affordable, making them accessible to underprivileged and rural women. By utilizing sugarcane bagasse, a material that would otherwise go to waste, Team Udaan’s solution reduces environmental impact and promotes resource efficiency. Their dedication to both social and environmental causes exemplifies the core values of Samsung Solve for Tomorrow.

NIT Surat: Keeping Beaches Clean with Automated Innovation

From Surat, Gujarat, the team of Aditi Tapariya, Harshil Mistry, and Vaibhav Gupta from NIT Surat developed an automated beach-cleaning robot named Sweep during Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2023. This innovative solution addresses the critical issue of waste accumulation on beaches and its detrimental effects on marine ecosystems.

Sweep is a programmable robot equipped with advanced sensors capable of detecting, identifying, and segregating different types of waste materials based on their recyclability. Designed to navigate difficult terrains, the robot can autonomously clean specified areas at regular intervals. This groundbreaking technology not only enhances the efficiency of beach cleaning but also minimizes human intervention, thereby reducing the risk of harm to marine life.

1. Introduction of a ‘School Track’

For the first time, ‘Solve for Tomorrow’ includes a ‘school track’ specifically for students aged 14-17. This track, alongside the existing ‘youth track’ for college students aged 18-22, allows younger participants to present their innovative ideas. The school track was introduced in response to overwhelming interest from school students, enabling them to participate under the theme of ‘community and inclusion.’ ‘Community Champion,’ the winning team of School Track, will receive INR 25 Lakh grant for prototype advancement.

2. Human-Centered Design Thinking Workshops

This edition also debuts the first-ever design thinking workshops for young school students. These workshops focus on enhancing soft skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, probing, and creativity using the Human-Centered Design Thinking framework. This unique module encourages participants to “think like a designer” by emphasizing human values, radical collaboration, visualization, action-oriented bias, deferring judgments, and embracing experimentation.

Key features of this module include:

• Human-Centered Design: A process that places people affected by the problem at the center, ensuring solutions are tailored to real needs.
• Innovative Problem-Solving: Utilizing design world processes and tools to make creative leaps in real-world applications.
• Focused Methodologies: Enabling participants to think like designers, focusing on human values, collaboration, and experimentation.

Participants will navigate through the following stages:

1. a) Empathy

• Conduct user interviews to understand personal stories and situations.
• Articulate difficulties and capture emotions.

1. b) Define

• Define the problem statement based on interview notes.
• Observe patterns and identify major pain points and causes.

• Generate and refine idea solutions.
• Seek feedback to enhance and further develop solutions.

• Create prototypes in various formats such as storytelling, paper, digital, or physical models.

• Share prototypes with users, gather feedback, and iterate for improvement.

This unique initiative, part of Samsung’s ‘Solve for Tomorrow’ programme, focuses on enhancing essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, probing, and creativity among students through the Human-Centered Design Thinking framework. The national education and innovation competition aims to foster a culture of innovation amongst the next generation.

Tailored specifically for India, the one-day workshop has been conceptualised to encourage students to appreciate the idea of design thinking and nudge them to identify and solve real-world problems. As part of the academic curriculum, Human-Centered Design Thinking is a powerful practice for solving-problems. Using processes and tools from the design world, the-Human Centred Design framework impresses upon empathy, definition, ideation, prototyping and testing of a solution to improve the lives of users.

“Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is part of our vision to empower the next generation and create an ecosystem of innovation in the country. We believe that they are the flag-bearers of innovation and require nurturing from a young age. 1. Empathy: Students engage in role-play and interviews, empathizing with various user types affected by real-world problems, exploring their experiences and perspectives.

2. Define: Through consolidated notes and guided discussions, students define the core issues using tools like the Problem Tree, identifying root causes and areas for intervention.

3. Ideate: Encouraging creativity, students brainstorm a multitude of solutions, embracing all types of ideas, before refining and finalizing inter-linked solutions through group collaboration.

4. Prototype: Students recap prototyping methods and translate their chosen solutions into tangible storyboards, presenting their ideas for feedback and further enhancement.

5. Test: After building the solutions, feedback mechanism begins where user experience is taken into consideration and depending on the response; it is improved as per their satisfaction levels.

Samsung India has hosted a roadshow at Oriental Institute of Science and Technology in Bhopal where engineering students from the institute demonstrated their intent to participate in Solve for Tomorrow to solve pressing global issues. Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is a national education and innovation competition that aims to encourage a culture of innovative thinking and problem solving amongst the country’s next generation.

The students came forward and expressed their commitment to solving real-world problems such as waste management and deforestation. They said they require a platform such as Samsung’s ‘Solve for Tomorrow’ that can guide and support them in turning their ideas into action and help transform people’s lives.

Sk. Mustaque Ali currently employed with EY, works closely with the Government of Madhya Pradesh around start-up policies pertaining to environment and sustainability. He attended the roadshow as the chief guest.  He met the students and shared his journey of creating awareness and building advocacy around the critical themes. He also encouraged the students to think of innovative ideas to solve real-world problems like environment deterioration.

As Samsung’s flagship CSR initiative, ‘Solve for Tomorrow’, enters its third edition, here are some compelling reasons to apply for this national innovation and education competition:

1. Separate Track for School Students: For the first time, school students aged 16-17 years have a dedicated “school track,” alongside the “youth track” for those aged 18-22. On the fifth day, each team will pitch their ideas at the National Pitch Event at IIT Delhi to be among the Top 10 Finalist teams.
6. Prizes for Ages 14-17: Regional shortlisted teams (50 teams) will receive certificates of participation. Semi-finalists (10 teams) will receive INR 20000 grant per team and a Samsung Galaxy Tab. Finalists (5 teams) will receive a Rs 1 lakh grant per team and a Samsung smartwatch, while the winner, named the “community champion,” will receive INR 25 lakh grant and Samsung products for their school.
7. Prizes for Ages 18-22: Regional shortlisted teams (50 teams) will receive certificates of participation. Semi-finalists (10 teams) will receive  INR 20000 grant per team and a Samsung Galaxy laptop. Finalists (5 teams) will receive a Rs 1 lakh grant per team and a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip smartphone, while the winner will receive a Rs 50 lakh grant and Samsung products for their college.

Step 4: Select your appropriate age range and enter your email address. Complete the CAPTCHA verification process and click ‘Submit‘ to receive a one-time passcode (OTP) on your provided email.
