Discipline and Depth: Anusha’s IP journey in Cellular Tech

Anusha has 92 global patent filings! Her pathway to success is driven by diligent learning and disciplined innovation. Since her patent journey began in 2015, she has become a powerhouse in the physical layer of cellular communications, with many global patents spanning 4G and emerging 6G technologies. For Anusha, her innovation journey centers on deeply mastering the intricate 3GPP standards and receiver algorithms within the cellular physical layer, then identifying and solving advanced problems that bridge these frameworks. She emphasizes the importance of protecting and nurturing one’s unique problem-solving skills to carve out a distinct niche for oneself. “Innovation is a skill that can be cultivated through the right practice with great discipline,” she says. Her collaborative approach fuels continuous growth.

From Curiosity to Creation: Meghana’s journey through explorative research 

“Building something from scratch is messy, iterative but is deeply rewarding,” says Meghana. When she joined SRI-B in late 2022, her goal was simple: design a high fidelity multicapture rig for hand tracking in the immersive XR space. What began as a hands-on engineering challenge soon turned into a progressive patent journey with over 29 global filings, and still counting. Her explorations, in setting up a state-of-art multicapture rig with her team soon became a launchpad for discoveries on hand kinematics, low-light tracking, and fatigue detection. Meghana’s story reveals how innovation is often less about grand visions and more about meticulous, iterative exploration.

Exploration and Excellence: Shweta’s journey Through Network Innovation

Shweta’s experience offers a glimpse into the early sparks of curiosity that fuel long-term innovation. Her first stint with patents came through a shelved idea on RF elements, which nonetheless ignited a lasting interest in intellectual property. Specializing in Non-Access Stratum (NAS) and later expanding to network layers, Shweta has contributed to critical patents in 5G and beyond. Her journey highlights the importance of mentorship and a supportive environment. Shweta firmly believes that patience to nurture ideas from start to finish is key in the generation of patents. “Collaboration with the right people also helps to refine and elevate these ideas into impactful innovations,” she added.

Her track record of 73 patent filings continues to inspire many.

At the retail outlets, consumers have to submit their e-documents for KYC verification at the Samsung Finance+ desk. On the completion of verification and credit scoring processes, the loan is sanctioned in as little as 15 minutes. Flexible EMI options are also available, tailored to suit varied consumer needs. This seamless process ensures that customers can purchase their preferred Samsung appliances quickly and without financial strain.

Nine bright young minds from Samsung Innovation Campus, the company’s flagship CSR programme, got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit Samsung India’s head office and its state-of-the-art R&D centres and Design Centre.

Samsung Innovation Campus upskills the Indian youth in future-tech skills such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT) and Coding & Programming. The students, eight toppers and one social media champion from the programme, got a first-hand look at the technology and the people driving Samsung’s cutting-edge innovations.

The students interacted with JB Park, President and CEO at Samsung Southwest Asia, besides other senior leaders at Samsung India.

“Samsung Innovation Campus is for the youth of India to prepare them for a digital future. We aim to upskill youth in future technologies and enhance their employability. It is a proud moment for me to meet young beneficiaries of the programme. I believe the youth, especially from smaller cities in India, have unlimited potential, and I wish them all the best,” said JB Park.

The students arrived at the Samsung head office from all corners of India: Manish Singh and Prince Chauhan from Deen Dayal Upadhayaya Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur, specializing in AI; Mukesh Kumar Pandey and Anchal Verma, also from Deen Dayal Upadhayaya Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur, studying Big Data; Amit Kumar Maurya from Deen Dayal Upadhayaya Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur and Suhani S Gaonkat from Sri Krishnarajendra Silver Jubilee Technological Institute, Bengaluru, focusing on Coding & Programming; and Alok Singh and Subin Thomson from National Small Industries Corporation Ltd, Delhi, training in IoT.

The group was joined by Saurabh Yadav, a Samsung Innovation Campus Media Champion studying AI. Saurabh recorded 100 days of his Samsung Innovation Campus experience in as many posts on his social media handles.

In Noida and New Delhi, they interacted with the Managing Directors of the R&D centres, who shared valuable insights on the importance of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.

“Being here has been a life-changing experience. Meeting the people, who create technology that impacts millions of lives was beyond anything I had imagined,” said Manish Singh from Gorakhpur.

“The exposure to cutting-edge R&D and the emphasis on learning at every step have inspired me to aim higher. This experience will stay with me forever,” said Anchal Verma from Gorakhpur.

A visit to Samsung Design Delhi left the group awestruck by the creativity and futuristic designs shaping Samsung’s vision for tomorrow.

“The design centre showed me how innovation and aesthetics come together. It was fascinating to see how Samsung envisions the future through design,” said Suhani S Gaonkar from Bengaluru.

Aligned with the Government of India’s #SkillIndia and #DigitalIndia initiatives, Samsung Innovation Campus focuses on equipping youth with skills in high-demand tech fields, including AI, IoT, Big Data, and Coding & Programming.

In 2024, Samsung Innovation Campus conducted 12 certification events across educational institutes in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

The interactions not only inspired the students but also reinforced Samsung’s commitment to nurturing young talent, especially from smaller cities and towns, and prepare them for a brighter, more digital future.

Samsung R&D Institute India – Bangalore (SRI-B) has collaborated with Garden City University (GCU), Bangalore to set up a ‘Samsung Student Ecosystem for Engineered Data (SEED) Lab’, providing students and faculty an exciting opportunity to delve into the world of AI/ML and data engineering.

At the lab, students and faculty members of GCU will get hands-on experience through joint projects on emerging cutting-edge tech areas such as Natural Language Understanding, Speech and Text recognition and Machine Learning, with senior engineers at SRI-B.

Samsung has already launched four SEED labs – two each in Karnataka and in Tamil Nadu (VIT- Vellore & VIT- Chennai) earlier, engaging more than 400 students in AI and data-related projects.

“We’re at a time when technology is evolving faster than ever. We are collaborating with the local ecosystem where we strive to develop talent and upskill Indian engineers / linguists, to not only make them industry-ready, but also become the game changers of the future. Our strategic partnership with Garden City University will further advance our efforts and explore new opportunities in creating innovative products for India”, said Mohan Rao Goli, Chief Technology Officer, SRI-B.

The Lab at GCU plans to leverage the capabilities of Linguists in executing AI and Multi-lingual, data-centric projects by building an end-to-end pipeline for data, which includes Text/Speech Data generation in global languages, engineering (curation, labelling, and more), data management and archival.

“Collaboration with industries is crucial for universities to produce the workforce and innovators of the future. Our partnership with Samsung through the SEED (Student Ecosystem for Engineered Data) program aligns perfectly with the ethos of Garden City University. I am confident that this collaboration will greatly benefit our students while also strengthening Samsung’s industry-academia relationships. This marks a significant step forward for both parties”, shared Dr. Joseph V.G., Chancellor, Garden City University.

The SEED Lab, which is a collaborative initiative between SRI-B and GCU for 5 years, is spread across 1,500 sq ft. In its initial phase, the Lab has been equipped with state-of-the-art Infrastructure for the Students to collaborate with Samsung in generating datasets. The lab also has a robust backend infrastructure to store, process, and archive large volumes of data, and can accommodate about 30 people.

In January, Samsung R&D Institute India – Bangalore (SRI-B) organized ‘The Startup Collab: #FuelingDeepTech’, where 11 startups, working in the field of Generative AI, Responsible AI, Emotion AI, Visual AI, Quantum and Health, participated with great enthusiasm. The startups pitched their unique product offerings and showcased interactive live demos to a large audience consisting of SRI-B’s R&D teams, leaving them highly motivated and mesmerized.

Employees seized this opportunity to understand the startup offerings and explore potential areas of collaboration with them to influence Samsung’s products and services.

The daylong event featured a leadership address, startup pitches, an interactive demo showcase, and Samsung expert talks.

Mohan Rao, CVP & CTO at SRI-B, addressed a packed audience on how Samsung aligns its efforts with ecosystem partners. During the talk, Mohan Rao emphasized the company’s ‘build vs source’ philosophy and how we endeavor to bring about win-win collaboration opportunities.

Collaboration with startups is a symbiotic relationship where startups bring fresh ideas and agility, while Samsung can offer scale and stability. This also infuses the startup’s entrepreneurial spirit within the organization, fostering a culture of risk-taking and innovation. We look forward to collaborating with promising deep-tech startups and creating ground-breaking innovations”, he shared.

The Open Innovation team, operating under the aegis of the CTO Office, collaborates with both R&D teams and the startup ecosystem to identify and align potential collaboration opportunities. As part of their core responsibilities, this team facilitates incubation, partnerships and potential investments into aligned startups. So far, the team has successfully established 30+ partnerships and made around 12 strategic investments.

Traditionally, discussions around R&D, especially in the early exploration phase, have been limited to product owners, technology leaders, and key decision-makers. However, the Startup Collab: #FuelingDeepTech aims to create a platform that opens up startups to a broader audience within SRI-B. This approach enables the identification of high-impact, innovative, and potentially unexpected use cases across various ABC products, fostering collaboration and driving cutting-edge solutions.

The open format of the event allows Samsung and the startups to explore beyond the boundaries of traditional meeting setups, and enables R&D teams to combine the offerings of multiple startups with Samsung products, creating novel concepts and immersive consumer experiences. This unique approach will lead to many fruitful collaborations in the future, ultimately delivering non-linear value to Samsung users.

Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore (SRI-B) has inaugurated the Samsung Innovation Campus programme at the KLE Institute of Technology (KLEIT), Hubli  to upskill youth in future tech domains such as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Coding & Programming, and Data Science. This initiative strengthens Samsung’s commitment towards the Government’s Skill India initiative as part of its vision of #PoweringDigitalIndia.

At the classroom facility, students and faculty at KLEIT will work on advanced technology training as well as projects on domains such as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Coding & Programming, and Data Science to make students industry-ready. Through the integration of technology, basic software skills and emerging capabilities, the programme seeks to empower its participants to grow into well-rounded professionals.

Additionally, the initiative also intends towards faculty development program through mentorship from SRI-B, to bridge the gap between industry and academia.

Through this initiative, SRI-B plans to upskill approx. 100 students and professors per year at KLEIT. SRI-B is already working with four engineering colleges across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, engaging more than 500 students on courses of Artificial Intelligence, Coding & Programming, IoT, and Big Data. More than 100 students have already received their certification of completion.

The demand for engineers/scientists with knowledge in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence & Data Science is high. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Samsung is providing students with the tools they need to succeed in these growing fields. The Samsung Innovation Campus curriculum is designed to help close the skills gap and provide opportunities to students for growth in their job roles.

Samsung Innovation Campus acts as a hub for students and professors to work with SRI-B experts that enables them to have an in-depth understanding of the technologies through hands-on exposure to solve real-world challenges using cutting-edge Technologies.

Samsung Innovation Campus is the Company’s global citizenship programme that aims to bridge proficiency gaps in the country by skilling students on cutting-edge technology. Samsung has so far set up eight Samsung Innovation Labs in IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Roorkee and IIT-Guwahati, IIITDM-Kurnool and IIT-Jodhpur as part of its Samsung Innovation Campus programme. So far, these labs have trained over 1,000 students.

Samsung India’s flagship CSR program Samsung Innovation Campus concluded the AI, and Coding & Programming courses for its first batch of 68 students in Cambridge Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, reiterating Samsung’s commitment to being India’s strong partner and working alongside the Government in its mission to empower the country’s youth and #PoweringDigitalIndia.

The students, mentored and trained at CIT, Bengaluru were granted certificates of course completion at a felicitation ceremony held at the institute. The students were felicitated by officials from Samsung and CIT.

The first batch of students, who graduated in the month of June this year, set a remarkable precedent, showcasing the program’s effectiveness in transforming young minds into competent tech professionals. This time around, a batch of 68 students, of which 34 have been trained in AI and 34 in Coding and Programming.

“The goal of the Samsung Innovation Campus is to contribute to the development of India by empowering youth with education. Through this initiative, we want to empower the youth and create opportunities for them in future tech domains, further boosting India’s growth story and strengthening our commitment to Powering Digital India,,” said Mr. Mohan Rao Goli, Chief Technology Officer, Samsung R&D Institute, Bengaluru.

Youth enrolled for the program will undergo classroom and online training and complete their hands-on capstone project work in their selected technology areas from among Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Big Data and Coding & Programming.

The partnership with CIT is in addition to a Memorandum of Understanding that Samsung India signed with the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI) to train 3,000 less-privileged students across India as part of the Samsung Innovation Campus initiative.

Samsung, India’s largest consumer electronics company, is inviting startups to collaborate on technologies around the Government’s Digital India stack, which includes UPI, Digilocker, Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), Open Credit Enablement Network (OCEN), Unified Health Interface (UHI) among others.

With this, Samsung aims to accelerate its Digital India journey in the country and strengthen its vision of Powering Digital India.

The startups will partner with Samsung’s R&D centres and business units in India on domains such as wallet, health, fitness where products and services will be integrated with the Samsung ecosystem.

On a case-to-case basis, Samsung will also explore funding support to some of these startups to help them further scale their solutions.

As a first step to connect with startups in India, Samsung held a Startup Collab event at the iconic Samsung Opera House in Bengaluru earlier this week. At the event, around 25 startups from across India came together and interacted with Samsung leadership from its R&D centres in Bengaluru and Noida, and its corporate headquarters in Gurugram, exploring Samsung’s ecosystem of products and services and understanding where they can potentially collaborate around Digital India initiatives.

The startups that attended Samsung’s Startup Collab event were from the fintech, health tech and eCommerce space with some of them utilizing the India Stack to build for Digital India services.

As part of the collaboration, Samsung’s R&D centres and business units in India will work together with the startups to co-build solutions for a specific product or service that have the potential to be integrated with Samsung’s product ecosystem.

Samsung’s engineers, who work on cutting-edge domains such as AI, machine learning, IoT, big data, metaverse, will also provide these startups  with technical mentorship as well as guidance in protecting their intellectual property, wherever relevant.

Over the years, Samsung has had very successful partnerships with startups in the country. For instance, a successful startup today powers Samsung’s local India app-store where consumers can discover and access their favourite mobile applications in 12 Indian languages. This currently has close to 3 million daily active users.

Another startup has powered Lock Screen Stories on Samsung Galaxy smartphones in which consumers get beautiful wallpapers and content every time they unlock their devices. This feature has close to 30 million daily active users.

A vision technician from Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, New Delhi using the EYELIKE Fundus Camera

This World Sight Day, Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling program has set a target of screening 150,000 individuals in India for eye diseases using the unique EYELIKE Fundus Camera by the end of 2023.

As part of the Galaxy Upcycling program, Samsung is giving new life to older Galaxy devices to reduce electronic waste and enable greater access to ophthalmic health care in underserved communities.

Globally, 1.1 billion people suffer from vision loss, 90% of who live in low- and middle-income countries and lack access to affordable and quality eye health care. To address this, Samsung has partnered with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) and LabSD, Inc. to transform old and unused Galaxy technology into medical diagnosis cameras called EYELIKE fundus cameras. This device allows both medical and non-medical professionals to screen patients for conditions that may lead to blindness.

Through programs like Galaxy Upcycling, Samsung is not only providing innovative technologies that reshape our experiences with the world, but is also empowering consumers to adopt more environmentally-conscious lifestyles.

To diagnose patients, the program has partnered with four eye hospitals – Sitapur Eye Hospital in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, Aravind Eye Hospital in Pondicherry, Guruhasti Chikitsalya in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital in New Delhi to set up eye care camps and use the devices in vision centers, vans and base hospitals across the country. So far, Samsung has upcycled nearly 200 units of second hand Galaxy smartphones and distributed EYELIKE Fundus Cameras to partners in India.

An older Galaxy smartphone becomes the brain of the EYELIKE handheld fundus camera, capturing images while connected to a lens attachment for enhanced fundus diagnosis.

The Galaxy device then utilizes an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze and diagnose the images for ophthalmic diseases. The device connects to an app that accurately captures patient data and suggests a treatment regimen at a fraction of the cost of commercial instruments. The unique and affordable diagnosis camera can screen patients for conditions that may lead to blindness, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Since the start of the program in India, the four partners have screened around 5,000 patients for eye diseases. Partners point out that the EYELIKE device is easy to use, requires less training, is portable and guarantees a high-quality image. It allows for easy identification of the optic nerve, macular and vessels. With these benefits the partners have been able to help patients in rural areas where access to ophthalmic health care is limited.

The unique EYELIKE Fundus Camera

Engineers at the Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore, which is Samsung’s largest R&D centre outside Korea, were involved in developing the Fundus image capture mechanism, the AI-based processing algorithm, the intuitive UI and server-related operations in the EYELIKE application. The EYELIKE platform scans retinal images and uses an accurate AI-based algorithm powered by the computational capabilities of these phones to detect diseases in the retinal images and classify them as normal or abnormal.

Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore (SRI-B), the Company’s largest R&D centre outside Korea, has won the ‘Best in Class Center of Excellence’ and ‘Technical Role Model’ Awards at the recently held Zinnov Awards 2022.

To recognize and celebrate visionaries and change makers, the 13th edition of Zinnov Awards focussed on honoring the Titans in Tech – the India centers and individual role models who have created an impact on a global scale.

The Best in Class Center of Excellence award is1 a company-wide award that recognizes those India centers that are leading the way in driving innovation and research in specific technologies/processes, while facilitating collaboration across various business units. The assessment was done across two areas – Technology COE and Process/Functional COE.

SRI-B has also won the individual contributor award, Technical Role Model award, recognizing technology stalwart Dr. Pinaki Bhaskar for creating a significant impact in the technologies of Artificial Intelligence/Big Data Analytics, Intelligent Automation and co-authoring over 30 research publications.

This award is a recognition for all of us who have been pushing the envelope for research-to-market framework with end-to-end thinking. The award also recognizes all our innovators who have been creating intellectual property and contributing to the culture of intrapreneurship in the organization”, said Dipesh Shah, EVP and Managing Director, Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore.

In the last few years, the R&D centre has established more than twenty research collaborations with universities/research institutes in India and overseas, working in areas of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Wireless Networks and Multimedia, which are its centres of excellence.

In the 25 years since its foundation, SRI-B has developed several products and solutions for both the national and global market, with several ‘world’s firsts’ conceptualized and developed out of this R&D center.

SRI-B focuses on technologies around Communication Protocols, Multimedia (including Camera Solutions), AD Tech, Data Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence and IoT. The centre has built end-to-end expertise in COEs through product management and UX Design thinking.  The R&D centre’s key focus is to create global product differentiation and solutions for the Indian market by identifying unique insights and deliver value to consumers.
