Samsung Newsroom got hands on to put the newest in the Galaxy A series to the test.

A Camera that Flips Around

Equipped with Samsung’s first rotating camera array, the Galaxy A80’s triple camera set-up features a 48MP main camera, an Ultra Wide Camera and a 3D Depth Camera. The camera array combines to produce a number of effects, some familiar and some new.

But the best part about the Galaxy A80 is that the range of camera effects aren’t just limited to the camera on the back of the phone. The A80 employs a slide-out panel on top of the phone that automatically extends upward and flips the camera around to face the user when they switch to the front-facing camera mode, allowing the powerful camera array to be used for selfie-mode photos too. The sliding module fitting seamlessly into the back of the phone when lowered, making the motor-driven raising and lowering of the camera array very sleek.

The ability to use the phone’s 48MP main camera for front-facing photos struck us as a game changer. For shots where we wanted to take a selfie while still capturing a significant portion of the background, Wide mode on the selfie camera was ideal. To take the effect a step further, the Galaxy A80 is also equipped with Ultra Wide mode*, which has a viewing angle as wide as that of the human eye, and is perfect for taking wide scenery and nature shots. We had a lot of success using Ultra Wide mode to take front-facing photos too, as it worked well for taking selfies with large groups of people and taking pictures in front of things like large landmarks. What’s more, all of these images were captured in stunning Wide Quad HD quality due to the fact that we were able to use the 48MP main camera to take them.

Live focus mode was another favorite of ours. The feature uses the depth sensor and machine learning to apply a cinematic blurring effect on the background while keeping the subject in the foreground crisp and focused. The ‘bokeh’ blurring effect is adjustable, and leads to some artistic, professional looking shots.

We loved the content creation possibilities afforded by the Galaxy A80 too. When taking videos while walking or running, Super steady mode was a big help in reducing camera shake and smoothing out videos. We were even able to create some movie-like videos with bokeh backgrounds using Live focus video mode. The Galaxy A80 allows you to switch in and out of selfie mode in the middle of a recording too, with the phone seamlessly blending the footage on either side of the camera rotation so that you can switch back and forth between the front and rear-facing cameras without interrupting your video**. The newest in the Galaxy A line can even capture videos in stunningly crisp 4K Ultra-high definition mode (3840 X 2160 pixels).

A True Full-Screen Display

The Galaxy A80 features Samsung’s first full-screen display – a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED New Infinity Display. Without a notch, waterdrop or cut-out, playing our favorite racing game was just how we’d always wanted it to be – big, bright and uninterrupted. While playing, we discovered that we were more likely to spot other players and in-game details on the bigger, unobstructed display, and that instances where we were hitting the wrong buttons by mistake were lessened because the controls were more spread out.

Watching videos on the notch less screen produced a certain cinematic satisfaction, and we found that the extra screen real estate provided by the lack of a ‘forehead’ at the top of the phone improved usability across the board. The phone’s Smart Multitasking feature***, for instance, worked well on the Galaxy A80’s bigger screen. Doing things like checking a map on one half of the screen while texting a friend to tell them where we were on the other half was very handy. The picture-in-picture mode was also great for when we were watching something, but still wanted to be able to do other things on the phone.

Intelligent Power and Performance

All the great features mentioned above are rendered useless without reliable battery life on the go. The Galaxy A80’s 3,700mAh smart battery and intelligent performance functions to be up to the task.

With its intelligent battery, the Galaxy A80 analyzes usage and automatically closes background apps that are unnecessarily using up battery life. To take battery conservation a step further, users can turn on Adaptive Power Saving, which allows their device to modify settings according to users’ expected daily usage. After giving the phone some time to get used to our usage patterns, we found that this feature really helped in preserving battery life. Once the battery does eventually tick down, the Galaxy A80 is equipped with Super Fast Charging**** technology to get users charged back up quickly.

The device is also equipped with an ‘Intelligent Performance Enhancer’, which allows the phone’s AI to optimize CPU and RAM usage and ensure that the amount of power being drawn is always a match for the user’s unique usage patterns. We additionally appreciated how the Intelligent Performance Enhancer would preload our most-used apps to ensure that they were able to be quick-launched when needed.

Cool Extras

In addition to getting lost in the Galaxy A80’s edge-to-edge New Infinity Display, now users can experience immersive sound too. The device is equipped with Dolby Atmos audio that allows for a 360-degree audio experience when using headphones or a Bluetooth speaker.

The Galaxy A80’s ergonomic curved back (available in Angel Gold, Ghost White and Phantom Black) makes it comfortable to grip in one hand. Likewise, the position of the power button lower down on the side of the phone, and easy-to-activate ‘One-handed mode’ made the phone easy to use when we had a lot going on.

Optimal for creating and consuming media, with a battery that can be counted on, the Galaxy A80 is the ideal companion for the content-hungry user living in the now.

Filled with sandy beaches, blossoming flowers, and lazy days by the pool, it is no wonder that summer is peak picture-taking season.  The longer days marked by early sunrises and late sunsets mean you’ve got even more daylight to work with than any other time of year.  But although popular summer vacation destinations are ripe with creative possibilities, they’re also bursting with overdone clichés. Thankfully, the Galaxy S10 is here to help.

1. Take Beach Portraits with Live Focus

Nothing captures a summer day at the beach quite like the unbridled joy of a canine smile – and nothing captures those smiles quite like the Galaxy S10’s Live Focus feature. Originally designed to give you the power to add background blur to your portraits, the Galaxy S10 offers a new selection of blur effects, allowing you to create a variety of artistic photos.

The new effects include zoom, spin, blur and color point. The latter option makes your subject stand out by keeping them in full color while painting the rest of the photo in black and white. When shooting in Live Focus mode, the new background options, as well as a slider that allows you to adjust the intensity of the effect you want to apply, appear just above the shutter button.

You can preview your selections in real-time, but if you’re still not happy after you take the shot don’t worry – you can choose a new effect and make adjustments in the Gallery app even after you’ve taken the picture.

2. Fit the Whole Shoreline in with the Ultra Wide Lens

While you’re enjoying a morning walk down the beach with your pup, make sure you spend some time taking in the scenery with the Galaxy S10’s Ultra Wide lens. Whether you’re trying to capture dramatic skies, or expansive shorelines, the 16MP Ultra Wide lens offers a 123-degree field-of-view so you can make your summer photos more interesting. Simply enter the camera app and click on the icon with three trees above the shutter button to use the Ultra Wide lens.

3. Get a Dog’s Perspective with Super Steady

Have you ever wondered what the world looks like from your dog’s point of view? The next time you’re out for a walk in the park, you can capture their perspective with the Galaxy S10’s Super Steady video stabilization, which allows you to record video without any shakiness. Super Steady can be toggled right in the Video menu and, once turned on, allows the Galaxy S10 to optimize your recording, whether you’re bombing downhill on a bike or capturing a booty-shaking corgi on a summer evening walk, so you get fluid, steady action in your videos every time.

4. Capture that Puppy Love in Ultra-High Definition

White, fluffy clouds are rolling through blue skies, a breeze is blowing through the trees and fresh green grass, and your dog just can’t help but thank you for sharing the day with a big goofy smile. Every dog owner knows the happiness those moments can bring and now you can share them with your pup in ultra-high definition with the Galaxy S10’s 10MP, UHD Dual Pixel AF Selfie Camera that delivers true- to-life image quality.

5. Post Your Best Shots Straight to Instagram

Our best memories deserve to be shared, and the easiest way to show your friends and family what you’re up to is by posting straight to Instagram social media with the Galaxy S10’s Instagram mode. You will first have to install the app and set up an Instagram account for the option to appear in the menu above the shutter button in the Samsung Camera app. Once your account is ready, simply select the Instagram mode from the menu, take your photo or video, and you will be taken directly to Instagram where you can share what you captured in your Instagram Stories.

6. Shoot Stunning Sunsets at the Park

One of the best parts of summer is taking in the purple and pink skies of late evening sunsets – but getting crisp shots can be difficult in the fading light. As the above images shot with the 12MP Wide main camera demonstrate, the Galaxy S10 is capable of delivering incredible low-light performance. With an F1.5 aperture and larger 1.4 µm pixels, the camera is able to capture more light so you and your furry friend will be photographed in full detail while you’re catching the last rays of daylight. In addition to the Galaxy S10’s professional low-light performance, it also features a dedicated Night Mode for especially dark conditions to give your night shots a boost.

7.  Slow Down Summer with Super Slow-mo

Summer vacations might be relaxing, but time still moves too fast to capture those precious moments that happen in the blink of an eye – and what could be more precious than a corgi in a floating rubber ducky? The Galaxy S10’s Super Slow-mo is the perfect tool to capture those moments, shooting in 960fps and capable of extending 0.4 seconds of action into a 14.8 second clip. Choose the Super Slow-mo option from the menu above the shutter button in the Samsung Camera app and hit record. After capturing the action, the Galaxy S10 processes it for you and produces a Super Slow-mo video in 720p HD resolution ready for your next social media post.

The Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode is the perfect tool for capturing photos after the sun has gone down. Accessible from the Camera app, Night Mode can be manually toggled on and off whenever you wish to use it in the Camera app’s sliding menu. Compared with photos taken without it switched on, Night Mode minimizes the noise from a dark environment to enhance a photo’s details and corrects colors, along with other image qualities, to make the resulting low-light shots more vivid.

Samsung Newsroom traveled to some of the top landmarks around Seoul after dark to see how the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode can bring out every detail in a nighttime scene, even in low light conditions.

A Palace for All Hours of the Day

Deoksu Palace is one of Seoul’s four ancient palaces, drawing visitors keen to take in its striking architecture day and night.

Junghwajeon, one of the royal courts of Deoksu Palace, was built in 1902 and has a remarkable golden exterior featuring intricate patterns, colors and textures that are not easy to capture at night. However, by simply turning on Night Mode on the Galaxy S10+, all the courts’ details come to life, thanks to Night Mode’s intelligent gradation adjustment that brings vibrancy to pictures taken after dark. Try using a tripod to level the top and bottom of the frame for an ever better shot of the ancient palace that captures every striking detail.

While the Galaxy range’s Night Mode function previously only automatically activated when conditions were very dark (below 1 lux), the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode now allows users to make the most out of it as they can manually switch it on or off and use it for lighter nighttime scenes.

Stand-Out Statues Amid City Life

Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Plaza, often bustling with pedestrians, is a place where the traditional and the modern come together. Neon lights from the buildings that flag it, along with the bright lights of passing cars, make up a vibrant patchwork of color during the nighttime, but can easily drown out the statues at the Plaza’s heart in pictures.

Thanks to the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, the two statues that sit right at the heart of downtown Seoul (Admiral Yi Sun-sin, first picture, Sejong the Great, second picture) can be captured without any compromise to the eclectic lighting of their surroundings. Night Mode lowers camera sensitivity and decreases shutter speed, capturing bright lighting well despite the high contrast. Paired with the Ultra Wide lens of the Galaxy S10 line, Night Mode provides after-dark shots that can capture everything in the camera’s field of vision.

When Urban Meets Rural

Naksan Park in northern Seoul features vistas that include a striking contrast between the area’s historic fortress wall, idyllic mountain views and the nighttime bustle of downtown Seoul.

But Galaxy S10+ users need not worry about losing any detail when capturing close (first picture) or wide (second picture) shots of scenes with such subject contrast. Without Night Mode switched on, distinct features of the landscape would be lost, with city lights obscuring lower contrast areas such as the striking mountainous terrains in the far distance. But just by switching Night Mode on, you can maximize the visibility of your shot thanks to its intelligent noise reduction that balances different areas of contrast and light to cleanly bring out a shot’s every aspect – even in low-light conditions.

Sunset By the River

The Hangang Riverside Park lights up as the sun goes down, and the variety of different lighting attractions on display reflect in the Han River to often dazzling effect. Yet capturing this display of light from a variety of different light sources, from the natural light of the fading sun to the colorful façade of the Hangang Floating Islands, can present a challenge when looking to achieve balance in twilight pictures.

With the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, pictures emerge more vibrantly thanks to its auto color-correcting software, resulting in bright and clean shots that carefully negotiate all the different sources of light on offer. For an even more vivid take, users can alter Night Mode’s settings for lower exposure correction to capitalize on the darker aspects of a scene – without losing any of the color or detail.

Bird’s Eye Views

Seoul’s Namsan Tower sits an impressive 479.7 meters above sea level, offering visitors a scenic, near-panoramic view of the city which comes to life as the sun sets.

One of Namsan Tower’s best offerings to visitors is the opportunity it presents for you to capture shots of the sprawling city that lies below it – as well as of the striking tower itself against a diverse backdrop. But cloudy weather conditions add more disruptive photographic noise to pictures that obscures the details of a shot, especially for long-distance vistas.

Just by sliding Night Mode on in the Camera app, Galaxy S10+ users can take shots that bring out the vivid colors of this cityscape at night thanks to Night Mode’s intelligent noise reduction capabilities. Whether you are looking to photograph a landmark (first picture) or achieve a birds-eye view shot of a city (second picture), the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode optimizes color and contrast balance to striking effect – even in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

Even Out Shaky Footage with Super Steady Mode

When starting anything new, you may want to minimize equipment cost and outlay before you’re fully committed to the project or hobby. Vloggers, however, often discover that one piece of equipment is crucial to create smooth videos: a stabilizing gimbal. When you hold a camera in your hands, the slightest shake can be reflected in the footage, resulting in lots of time-consuming cuts and edits before your video is ready to be published.

Super Steady mode on the Galaxy S10+ is able to eliminate the effect of shaky hands by calibrating the video, predicting your movements and calculating the range with the smartphone’s Ultra Wide lens. To ensure that you don’t miss any of the action, capture the moment on your Galaxy S10+ in Super Slow-mo. Taking 960 frames per second, Super Slow-mo plays back 0.4 seconds of footage over 14 seconds, creating breathtaking videos that invite viewers to examine every detail, from a droplet of water falling on a petal, to a critical play in a sports game.

Vlogger Tip: Make use of the Galaxy’s S10+’s editing tools by adding background music or looping certain sections of the video to create a GIF file.

Condense Time with Hyperlapse

Hyperlapse provides the perfect segue from one moment of action to another, allowing you to condense the flow of time and fast-forward between scenes without a dramatic cut. What’s more, because the effect can also be added after capturing the original video footage, creators don’t need to be conscious of the camera or alter their actions while they are filming.

Vlogger Tip: Hyperlapse can be used to show the flow of time in a fixed location. Once you open the camera app on your Galaxy S10+, click on the “Settings” icon at the top left of the screen, activate the grid lines to help you find the center of your scene and fix the camera to a tripod.

Get Personal with the UHD Front Camera

While there are many different styles of vlog covering countless different topics, they all offer a personal point of view. When a vlogger talks directly to the camera, they want to ensure that they have the best picture quality possible to capture their moods and reactions.

For the Galaxy S10 line, Samsung brought new, advanced hardware and software-based technologies to the camera, including cutting-edge, AI-powered features. In order to learn more about the phones’ pro-grade camera system – which features an Ultra Wide lens, Super Steady video recording, and a built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) – Samsung Newsroom sat down with Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Division’s camera developers and product planner.

The Power of the Ultra Wide Lens

The secret to taking incredible photos with the Galaxy S10 line is the Ultra Wide lens. The addition of the Ultra Wide lens was a major moment for Samsung, and represents one of the biggest changes to the Galaxy series in generations. Now, users can capture every detail of an epic landscape, or fit the entire family into one group shot without having to move back.

“Users expect more than just improved image quality with a new device. They want a camera that makes it easier to take amazing photos,” explained product planner Sunyong Kim. “The Ultra Wide lens features a 123-degree field of view, just like the human eye, so you can easily capture the moment just as you see it.”

With the Ultra Wide lens, users can easily take dynamic pictures using the camera’s Live Focus function and Panorama mode. “Live Focus has been available on previous Samsung devices with the Telephoto and Wide-angle lenses, but for the Galaxy S10 line, we brought it to the Ultra Wide lens as well,” noted Sugon Baek. “What’s more, Panorama mode offers more vertical scope than previous models did, and greatly reduces the need to move the camera from left to right in order to capture the full shot.”

Shake-Free Video Quality

Another new innovation that’s built into the Galaxy S10 line is the camera’s Super Steady video-recording feature, which offers users enhanced video stabilization.²

Super Steady works by using VDIS (Video Digital Image Stabilization) technology. It predicts user movements before filming starts, and once the camera is running, it calculates the adjustment range to minimize shakiness in videos.

“In the past, achieving optimum video stabilization meant sacrifices for the camera’s angle of view,” noted Wonseok Song. “A conventional wide-angle camera couldn’t solve the problem. But thanks to the Ultra Wide lens, the S10 is able to support a natural viewing angle while also offering stability and quality.”

Given that the adjustment capability of the Super Steady technology is best for capturing bigger movements, Song has a tip for users filming in different conditions: “For scenes that feature less action in low light, use the camera’s normal mode. For brighter scenes that feature more movement, Super Steady is best.”

The Galaxy S10 doesn’t just have the most advanced camera system on a Galaxy phone, it also has the smartest. In a first for Galaxy smartphones, the Galaxy S10 includes a next-generation NPU that automatically optimizes pictures in up to 30 different categories.

“We added 10 additional categories to optimize common photos, including ‘Dog,’ ‘Drink,’ and ‘Shoe,’” explained Seoyoung Lee. ‘Dog’ mode, she added, optimizes users’ pictures by focusing on fine details, such as strands of fur, whereas categories like ‘Shoe’ and ‘Clothing’ focus on objects’ colors, since most pictures of these objects are taken without people’s faces in the frame. “We also added ‘Drink’ category because we noticed the growing trend of people sharing pictures of their cocktails on social media.”

The Galaxy S10 line’s camera also provides suggestions of ways to potentially improve photos through its Shot Suggestion function. Based on the Galaxy S10 line’s machine learning capabilities, Shot Suggestion references a database of over 100 million users’ pictures to offer helpful tips on improving overall composition, positioning and proportions for photos of various subjects, including people, animals and vehicles. “The AI-based suggestions have been developed not just to prioritize putting the subject at the center of a photo,” said Lee. “That way, no matter how you want to set up your shot, the Galaxy S10 will help you do it in the most striking way possible.”

In developing the Galaxy S10 line’s camera, the team focused on engineering technologies that add real value to the camera experience, rather than simply increasing the number of lenses and features available.

“The camera is for more than documenting and recording,” explained Kim. “It is now the means through which we communicate.”

From the Ultra Wide lens, to Super Steady, to the NPU – and to other features, like Instagram mode, new filters, enhanced Bixby Vision, and easy shifting between lenses – the Galaxy S10 helps users do more with their camera than they ever could before. It combines an f/1.5-aperture lens with an f/2.4, and automatically adjusts to light just like our eyes to help users snap professional-looking photos, day or night. Now, Scene Optimizer is capable of analyzing even more complex scenes, and can simultaneously process more image recognition data than before. When the camera recognizes specific scenes, it will also suggest other ways to potentially improve your photo. For example, if you’re taking a picture of a sunrise, the camera will automatically ask you if you’d like to switch to the Ultra Wide lens to ensure that you capture the scene in all its glory. If you’re taking a picture in extreme low-light conditions, it will propose that you take a Bright Night Shot for a professional-quality picture.

The camera also offers users instant, automatic recommendations on how to best frame their photo through its Shot Suggestion feature. Utilizing a database of over 100 million pictures, Shot Suggestion’s composition guide offers helpful tips to help you improve your photo’s proportions, positioning and overall composition.

The camera’s upgraded Live Focus mode allows you to customize your photos with artistic effects. The Galaxy S10+ utilizes its dual front cameras to support the feature, which includes options to add new spin bokeh, zoom bokeh, and color point effects, while the Galaxy S10 and S10e’s front-facing camera utilizes the NPU’s intelligence.
