Pairing the Galaxy Watch and a smartphone is straightforward. The Newsroom found the smartwatch’s advanced sleep tracker particularly useful, as the Galaxy Watch monitors four levels of sleep, including REM cycles, helping wearers to adjust their sleeping habits and get the rest they need.

The device’s inactive time alerts remind wearers who have been sitting for a prolonged period of time to stand up and move around. The alerts suggest simple stretching exercise and provide little messages of encouragement to keep you motivated.

With a variety of automatic sensors, the Galaxy Watch can monitor the wearer’s real-time health information. The smartwatch detects details such as your heart rate, global position and movements to measure and analyze your health status. The device’s accelerometer sensor, gyro sensor and the heart rate sensor can automatically recognize six types of activity – including walking, running and riding a bicycle, amongst others. The Galaxy Watch will begin to record information after 10 consecutive minutes of an activity and analyzes total activity to provide feedback for the wearer.

Acting as your very own personal assistant, your Galaxy Watch prepares useful information briefings for you twice a day. The morning briefing is issued just after you typically wake up, providing details about the day’s weather and schedule. The evening briefing notifies wearers of any pending events amongst their reminders, offers a summary of health and activity data for that day, and displays the next day’s forecast.

But what exactly do these numbers mean? And what makes ATM water resistance ratings different from other kinds of evaluation standards, such as IP ratings? Read on to find out.

IP Ratings – Making a Splash in the Mobile Industry

In recent years, as more and more individuals have begun taking their smartphones and wearables to places where just a little water can cause huge problems, demand for water-resistant electronics has skyrocketed. As a result, a number of international standards have been put in place for testing water resistance, including the Ingress Protection (IP) rating established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

A device’s IP rating consists of two numbers and is given in the format IPXY (i.e. IP67). X is the rating for physical ingress, or how resistant the device is to penetration by foreign solid objects such as dust, and ranges from 0 to 6. Y, meanwhile, represents the rating for liquid ingress, or how resistant it is to penetration by liquids under various conditions, and ranges from 0 to 8. Below are charts that summarize these protection levels.

The rating number assigned for each category indicates that the device being tested has met the requirements for each previous rating. For example, Samsung’s Gear S3 smartwatch, which has a rating of IP68, has passed the rating requirements for all six physical ingress levels and the first eight liquid ingress levels. In other words, under specific conditions, the Gear S3 can withstand accidental submersion up to 1.5 meters underwater for 30 minutes, as well as contact with harmful dust.

While a fitness band or smartwatch with an IP68 rating can be worn while jogging in the rain or doing the dishes, IP ratings do not take water pressure into account. Therefore, IP ratings are not indicative of a device’s ability to be used during aquatic activities such as swimming. This is where ATM ratings come in.

ATM Ratings – Water Resistance Under Pressure

While many manufacturers tend to follow IP ratings, some independently test their products to determine how much static pressure they can withstand when submerged. These pressure tests are measured in ATMs – which stands for atmospheres – and are converted to water depth to make the measurements easier to comprehend.

One ATM is equivalent to the static pressure exerted by static submersion in 10 meters of water. The higher the ATM rating, the deeper the product can go without being affected, as deeper water exerts more pressure. The basic ATM water-resistance levels are described below.²

Again, these ratings are for static pressure, meaning that if the device is resting still in a test chamber, it can tolerate pressure up to the rated value and will function properly upon its removal. Conversely, any application of dynamic pressure caused by movement of the wearer (such as diving into the water, for example) increases the pressure of water exposure. So, while a 3 ATM-rated fitness band could easily withstand rain, it might be damaged if sprayed with a powerful hose.

With a water resistance rating of 5 ATM, Samsung’s Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro are resistant to pressure at a depth of 50 meters, meaning the devices can not only stand up to the rain, but can also be worn during shallow water activities. This, along with the Speedo On swim tracking app,³ make the two new wearables ideal companions for any swim, whether tackling laps or going for a relaxing dip in the pool.

In summary, not all “water-resistant” devices are created equal. Therefore, it’s important to understand water resistance ratings to ensure your devices meet your needs and are appropriate for your lifestyle.

Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of 3 new variants of the stylish Gear S2 smartwatch with a whole new set of applications & dial faces for the Indian consumers.

In continuation of its leadership in the wearables category, Samsung introduced two new elegant editions of the Gear S2 Classic, one encased in 18K Rose Gold and another in Platinum, offering users diverse options to express and match their style. The third new variant is the Gear S2 White, where a sporty white elastomer strap is matched to the stylish silver dial.

Along with the new Gear S2 variants and unique watch faces, Samsung is also offering an enhanced choice of apps such as cab services from Uber, G’Night sleep tracking app, reminder specialist My Notes in Gear and an all-new YouTube browsing app Xenozu to its customers. Gear S2 will also feature a host of new games, enabling the intuitive rotating bezel as a natural game controller.

Three brand new variants

With the 3 new offerings, the Samsung Gear S2 is now available in 5 variants in India – Gear S2 Classic Black, Gear S2 Classic Rose Gold, Gear S2 Classic Platinum, Gear S2 Black and Gear S2 White.

The Platinum and Rose Gold variants come with plating that encases the dial and buckle. The new variants are complemented by premium leather straps, in Ivory White for the Rose Gold and Black for the Platinum. As before, both straps are standardized 20mm straps, giving the customer complete freedom to ‘dress’ their Gear S2 further with straps of their choice.

More Apps and Dial Faces

The Gear S2 Apps story in India has appealed to its users with the innovative and comprehensive solutions around Health, fitness, Connectivity and Style. This has been further enriched with the introduction of a new set of Apps and Dial Faces.

For instance, the Uber for Gear app allows users to locate, request and confirm cabs conveniently right from their wrist.

Another new addition in the Gear Apps store has been the award winning G’Night sleep tracking app that makes use of availa             ble sensors to analyse users’ sleep cycles to ensure they are woken up in their most active and fresh state.

In keeping with the efficiency boosting potential of a wearable device, a comprehensive notes & checklist application has been introduced for the Gear S2 called My Notes in Gear. With a host of tools that allow attaching pictures, colour coding and even reminder alarms based on time & location, the My Notes application keeps managing tasks & lists detailed yet fun.

YouTube browsing app, Xenozu, has been added to the Gear S2 portfolio that allows users to browse, search and view videos on the Gear S2, just with the turn of the bezel. It’s a great way to check what’s trending on YouTube before reaching for your phone. This is in addition to pre-existing apps for Twitter and Instagram as well as full keypad based support for popular Messengers like WhatsApp, Facebook etc.

Customers now also have a wider catalogue of dial faces to choose from right from the purely visual animated art of Peanuts to highly functional dial faces that can call out weather, moon phases, health goals, reminders & notifications all in one screen.

Host of new games

There’s also a host of new games that use the rotating bezel of the Gear S2 as a natural and intuitive game controller. To name a few, games from popular genres like the puzzle based Hextris, classic car racing Vroom Rider, brain teaser themed Hangman as well as wildly popular Play store games like Space Wars & Snake are now available on the Gear S2 to be played with bezel control.

Price and Availability

The new variants of the Gear S2 wearable will be available across all Samsung retail channels at a price of INR 24,300 for the Gear S2 White and INR 34,900 for the Gear S2 Classic Gold and Platinum variants.
