As GLP-1 medications become widely adopted for weight management and chronic disease treatment, tracking changes in muscle mass and physical activity alongside weight loss has emerged as a key medical focus. This research will delve into the feasibility of managing muscle loss for GLP-1 patients by utilizing biometric data including body composition, activity levels and heart rate provided by Galaxy Watch and Samsung Health.

Samsung and MGH have continuously collaborated on digital health research utilizing both Galaxy Watch and Samsung Health, including studies on Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). The MGH Diabetes Research Center, which specializes in research on diabetes and GLP-1 obesity treatment, initiated the joint study with Samsung after recognizing the potential for wearables to monitor body composition.

This study will also utilize Galaxy Watch8, powered by Samsung’s groundbreaking BioActive Sensor,[2] which helps provide advanced predictive and preventative wellness through more accurate health measurements.

Under the leadership of Dr. Melissa Putman, the study will enroll 100 adults beginning treatment with weight-loss medications into two groups. The intervention group will use Galaxy Watch to monitor their body composition via Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), track physical activity and receive personalized exercise guides. Their progress will be compared to the other group, which will receive the standard guidance and care typically given to patients starting GLP-1RA therapy.

To evaluate the study’s progress, researchers will use clinical-grade DXA scans[3] — the gold standard for body composition analysis — to track physiological changes in both groups. These data will help determine whether the insights and tailored guidance provided by Galaxy Watch8 can effectively support participants in building healthier daily habits, which may in turn contribute to better health outcomes particularly in preserving muscle mass.

Vasovagal syncope occurs when a person’s heart rate and blood pressure drop abruptly due to factors like excessive stress, leading to a temporary loss of consciousness. While the fainting spell itself is typically not life-threatening, sudden falls can cause severe secondary injuries like fractures or concussions, making early prediction critically important for prevention.

“Up to 40% of people experience vasovagal syncope over their lifetime, with one-third experiencing recurrent episodes,” said Professor Junhwan Cho of the Department of Cardiology at Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital. “An early warning could give patients advance time to get into a safe position or call for help, which would dramatically reduce the incidence of secondary injuries.”

The joint research team, led by Professor Cho, conducted evaluations on 132 patients with suspected VVS symptoms during induced fainting tests. Using a Galaxy Watch equipped with a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, the team analyzed the watch’s heart rate variability (HRV) data with an AI algorithm. The model successfully predicted impending fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance with 84.6 percent accuracy, at a clinically meaningful sensitivity of 90 percent and a specificity of 64 percent.

“This study is an example of how wearable technology can help shift healthcare from being designed for ‘post-care’ to a model of ‘preventive care,’” said Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Samsung Electronics. “We are committed to driving technological innovation that empowers our users to lead healthier everyday lives.”

The research findings were published in Volume 7, Issue 4 of “European Heart Journal – Digital Health,” a leading medical journal, and they represent the world’s first study to successfully demonstrate the potential for a commercial smartwatch to provide early prediction of syncope.

Samsung Malaysia has partnered with the Iskandar Puteri Command and Control Centre (IPCCC) to deploy Malaysia’s longest Samsung The Wall, a 19.35-metre visual system designed to enhance real-time city monitoring, coordination and response. The installation strengthens Iskandar Puteri’s smart city capabilities enabling faster, clearer and more connected decision-making across public safety and urban operations.

“Command and control centres play a critical role in helping city authorities respond effectively to complex, real-time situations,” said Charles Kim, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics. “At IPCCC, our focus was to support the government in delivering a visual system that enables information to be viewed clearly, understood quickly, and acted on with confidence. By enhancing visibility and situational awareness, teams are able to operate more efficiently and make informed decisions that ultimately benefit the public,” he added.

Located in Johor, IPCCC functions as a centralised operations hub, where authorities manage real-time security surveillance, traffic management, environmental monitoring and coordinated incident responses. By consolidating these multiple data streams within a single integrated system, IPCCC enables faster decision-making, stronger inter-agency coordination, and more efficient city management, helping to enhance the quality of life for communities in and around Iskandar Puteri.

The project, conceptualised in 2023, forms part of Iskandar Puteri City Council’s broader smart city initiatives. It aligns with Malaysia’s Smart City Framework by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), which emphasises smarter data-driven governance, urban resilience, and enhanced public safety.^[1]

At the heart of the command centre, Samsung The Wall serves a mission-critical centralised monitoring with high-resolution, clarity and seamless visual consistency across multiple data feeds. This allows IPCCC personnel to monitor multiple real-time data sources across security, traffic, and environmental conditions simultaneously, improving situational awareness, reducing response times and visual fatigue as well as supporting faster, more informed responses in increasingly complex and interconnected urban environments.

Measuring 19.35 metres in length and 2.7 metres in height, Malaysia’s longest Samsung The Wall is purpose-built for mission-critical environments. Designed with ultra-fine microLED technology, it delivers exceptional colour accuracy, contrast and visual consistency without bezels, ensuring uninterrupted visibility across the entire display. This enables operators to process complex information at a glance, minimise visual fatigue and respond with greater speed and precision.

The collaboration builds on Samsung’s long-standing support for smart city infrastructure across Malaysia. Its Smart Signage solutions have been widely adopted by city councils nationwide, including the Samsung LED installation at Perbadanan Putrajaya in 2018. Following the success of that installation, Samsung was recommended for the IPCCC project, where Samsung worked closely with stakeholders to deliver a system tailored to the operational demands of a modern command and control centre, supporting public sector teams with reliable, purpose-built digital infrastructure.

Through this deployment, Samsung continues to work alongside Malaysian government agencies in advancing smart governance, strengthening public safety and improving operational efficiency. This collaboration with IPCCC reflects a shared commitment to building cities that are more connected, responsive and resilient for the communities they serve.

Two Best of the Best Award Winners Recognized for Design Innovation

The S95H stands out for its distinctive FloatLayer design, which combines an ultra-thin OLED display with a luxurious metal plate to create a layered concept in which a slim OLED screen is placed over a bold metallic surface.

The result is a new category of premium art frame design that makes the OLED screen appear as if it is floating in front of the metallic silver frame, confidently highlighting the presence of metal and producing a striking visual effect. The vivid contrast enhances the sense of immersion, while the minimalist silver metal frame seamlessly integrates into interior spaces to resemble a refined piece of wall art.

Meanwhile, the Bespoke AI Laundry appliances applies a mono-body design concept across a range of types, including standalone washing machines, dryers and combos. Through this design, the series unifies different laundry appliances under consistent design languages, enabling the products to seamlessly harmonize with a variety of interior environments.

Additionally, Smart Screen — the large 7-inch LCD screen — enhances usability by providing an intuitive and simplified control experience. Integrated with SmartThings, the interface allows users to easily manage connected smart devices while offering AI-powered, personalized lifestyle solutions for greater everyday convenience.

All 16 Entries Recognized as Winners

Beyond its top honors, Samsung achieved the remarkable feat of having all 16 products it submitted selected as winners. The recognized lineup includes:

• Music Studio 5: A wireless speaker that plays soundwave visuals that shift in shape and intensity.
• The Movingstyle: A portable touchscreen display featuring Dolby Atmos, HDR10+, a built-in battery and rolling stand.
• Bespoke AI Refrigerator Family Hub: A refrigerator with a built-in, SmartThings-connected LCD screen that allows users to check recipes, weather and more.
• Bespoke AI Jet Bot: A robot vacuum with AI Object Recognition and All-in-One Clean Station Steam+.
• Bespoke AirDresser: A fabric care machine that features Dual Air Wash and Dual Jet Steam to smooth out wrinkles and remove odors.

The full experience of One UI 9 will be introduced with upcoming Galaxy flagship devices later this year, which will include advanced AI features that will make mobile interaction easy and effortless.

What’s New in One UI 9 Beta

One UI 9 beta introduces several updates across key areas of the mobile experience.

Samsung Notes[1] gains creative new tools, including decorative tapes and a wider variety of pen line styles. Meanwhile, the Contacts app now offers direct access to Creative Studio[2] for creating personalized profile cards without the need to switch between apps.

The updated Quick Panel gives users greater control over its layout. Brightness, sound and media player are each independently adjustable, with more size options to suit individual preferences.

Accessibility is significantly improved by an adjustable Mouse Key speed that enables smoother cursor control and a combined TalkBack package that brings together features previously offered separately by Google and Samsung. The new Text Spotlight feature — which displays selected text larger or more clearly in a floating window — has also been added to make reading easier.

One UI 9 also introduces enhanced protection against suspicious apps and potential threats: when new high-risk apps are detected, it now warns users, blocks execution and installation, and recommends deletion through security policy updates[3].

Availability

The One UI 9 beta program will be available to Galaxy S26 series users in select markets, including Germany, India, Korea, Poland, the U.K. and the U.S starting this week.[4] Galaxy S26 series users can apply to join the beta program via the Samsung Members app.
