Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has recently announced that it has had the carbon reduction impact of AI Energy Mode[1] in its select washing machines verified by the Carbon Trust Assurance, based on the Decarbonizing the Use-Phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) specification. This marks the first time that a product or feature has been validated using the DUCD specification. It is especially significant as it demonstrates the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction effect achieved through the AI Energy Mode during the use phase, verified by a third party.

“At Samsung, we continue to design our products and services with environmental factors in mind,” said Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D Team for Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “AI Energy Mode is a key example of such efforts, and with this verification recognizing its effectiveness, we will strive to further improve our products, features and services during their actual use.”

Samsung’s Longstanding Efforts

Samsung has long worked to establish objective and systematic indicators to assess and manage carbon emissions generated from home appliances. As part of these efforts, the company joined the DUCD initiative as a Secretariat member in September 2022.

The DUCD initiative is led by the Carbon Trust, a global climate consultancy, which partners with businesses, governments and financial institutions to drive positive climate action. Through collaboration with other industry leaders, it aims to standardize how energy use and savings from connected devices are measured, and contribute to building global methodologies for calculating the carbon savings of Wi-Fi–connected devices.

In November 2024, the initiative published a global specification establishing unified measurement criteria and reduction methodologies for connected devices. This approach measures the reduction in carbon emissions that occur during the consumer’s actual usage phase, distinguishing it from the measurement or reduction of carbon emissions during the production process conventionally used.

Verified Carbon Reduction with AI Energy Mode

Using this guidance, the Carbon Trust’s independent assurance arm, the Carbon Trust Assurance Ltd, tested a pilot assessment on Samsung’s global washing machine lineup.[2] It verified the reduction effect of AI Energy Mode by comparing the amount of carbon emitted between July 2024 and June 2025 when using the AI Energy Mode with the amount emitted when not using this mode.

For Samsung’s select energy-efficient washing machines, the total energy consumption using the SmartThings Platform[3] has been verified at 12.28 GWh during this time period,[4] resulting in 5,266 tCO₂e, by Carbon Trust Assurance Ltd according to the DUCD Part 1: Specification and Guidance. The verified total energy savings of 5.02 GWh in energy consumption, and 2,084 tCO₂e in GHG emissions savings can be attributed to switched-on AI Energy Mode.[5]

This level of energy savings corresponds to the amount of electricity that approximately 169,000 households can use in a single day, given that an average U.S. residential electric-utility customer purchases about 29.54 kWh of energy daily.[6]

Meanwhile, the company will participate in the upcoming CES 2026, where it will showcase both its energy-saving solutions and innovative new products.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. held its 2025 Southeast Asia Tech Seminar in Bangkok, Thailand on June 20, unveiling its latest advancements in home appliances for the region. The seminar was hosted at the Business Experience Studio, a space specially designed to offer business clients and visitors innovative and future-focused experiences through Samsung’s wide range of products and solutions.

Home Living Made Simple: Samsung’s “AI Home” Vision in Action

At the foundation of the showcase is Samsung’s commitment to making home living easier and more intuitive. This commitment is underscored by its “AI Home” vision, which focuses on the four key pillars of Ease, Save, Care, and Secure.

One of the centerpieces of this experience is the upgraded AI Home display[1] — a smart screen now available across more appliances, which enables users to seamlessly access functions, view personalized information on their Daily Board, and manage their home using Map View. The screen also connects third-party devices[2] via SmartThings, eliminating the need for a separate hub[3].

To enhance hands-free control experiences, the Bixby[4] voice assistant now includes Voice ID,[5] allowing the system to recognize individual users registered in advance, sync personal calendars[6] and even mirror Galaxy smartphone accessibility settings for better visibility. Innovative Refrigeration Solutions

At the seminar, Samsung also showcased its new global refrigerator lineup, which brings to life the “Screens Everywhere” vision that was first unveiled at CES 2025. Notable features of the lineup include the debut of the 9-inch AI Home display and improved AI Family Hub experiences.

Another highlight was the introduction of the new Side-by-Side model which was recently launched for the Southeast Asian market. It features an integrated screen for enhanced usability, supports AI Energy Mode[9] through built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and includes Wide Auto Open Door, which allows users to open the door with just a light touch.

Smarter Laundry, Greater Efficiency

Samsung continues to lead in laundry solutions with AI-enhanced functionality that delivers higher levels of convenience and efficiency. In response to regional demands, Samsung is incorporating AI Wash [10]— previously exclusive to front-load washers — to the new Bespoke AI Top Load Washer for the first time. The top-load models also offer a range of other AI features, including AI Energy Mode and AI VRT+.

Additionally, the new Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer set offers the enhanced AI Wash+ and AI Dry+[11] features for smarter performance. Notably, they can recognize a wider range of fabric types than before, giving users a more personalized laundry experience[12]. The new Bespoke AI Laundry washer and dryer set also comes equipped with AI Home Screen that offer intuitive control and monitoring of essential information such as wash cycles and remaining detergent levels.

At the seminar, Samsung introduced the principles behind the AI features of its laundry lineup, particularly focusing on how its devices leverage AI to detect laundry and adjust the washing or drying cycle accordingly.

Diverse air conditioner solutions for smart living

Attendees at the seminar also learned about the new ‘Good Sleep’ mode, which allows users to connect their air conditioners with their Galaxy Watch series and Galaxy Ring, and enable automatic adjustment of the air conditioner from the wearable’s detection of their sleep stage.

The newly launched system air conditioner (SAC) lineup was also on display during the seminar, giving attendees the opportunity to discover more about Samsung’s intelligent climate solutions that offer seamless smart experiences with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Powerful, Intelligent Vacuum Cleaners

Samsung is also introducing its most advanced vacuum products yet. The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra is the world’s most powerful cordless stick vacuum,[13] boasting up to 400W[14] of suction power and AI Cleaning Mode 2.0,[15] which can now detect corner[16] types and floor variations[17] – such as carpets, hard floors, mats – for smarter cleaning. It also helps adjust Air Conditioners’ settings based on your usage patterns, room temperature, and humidity. This intelligent control extends beyond the kitchen. Samsung’s AI Energy Mode can also optimize the settings of your AX32 air purifier, learning your usage patterns, room temperature, and humidity to deliver optimal air quality while minimizing energy use.

Forgot to turn off your lights before leaving the house? Fret not about incurring unnecessary electricity costs. The power-off function on the SmartThings app lets you turn off your appliances, such as TVs, kitchen appliances, lights and even plugs[7] remotely whether you are in another room or outside your home.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced the launch of its new energy-efficient Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer[1] in Europe. The refrigerator was unveiled at ‘Welcome to BESPOKE AI’, a global launch event held at les Pavillon des Étangs in Paris on April 3. It achieves a high energy rating as a product itself, while its Wi-Fi capabilities allow for even further energy savings with SmartThings Energy.

“In response to the reality that energy efficiency is more important to consumers than ever, Samsung is launching a new model for the modern era,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team of Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through our considerable R&D efforts, we’ve been able to provide energy-saving opportunities in addition to the Samsung quality and features that global consumers appreciate. We’re confident that users would take advantages of Samsung’s new refrigerator in their day-to-day lives.”

Notably, the refrigerator has received an energy “A” rating according to EU energy standards, which is for the first time in Samsung’s extra wide bottom mount freezer type. Samsung implements its unique solutions to decrease energy consumption by 55.9% compared to the conventional model. [2] Especially the new AI Inverter Compressor[3] is a key part to achieve an A grade according to EU energy standards.

The new high-efficient AI Inverter Compressor has been redesigned to increase the radius of the rotating parts which enables its inertia to be higher than the conventional compressor[4] by 4.1 times. It means that the compressor can keep the power longer, so it uses less energy while keeping the temperature in the fridge moderate. The compressor also contributes to lowering the noise level by up to 5 times quieter than the conventional model[5] thanks to the new control technology.

Additionally, the Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer supports the energy saving mode in SmartThings Energy[6] which can reduce energy use by up to 15%. [7]The SmartThings AI Energy Mode also allows users to easily check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption, and it even estimates monthly electric bills. If usage exceeds the established estimate, the mode can also proactively save energy.[8] Furthermore, it can optimize the compressor speed and defrost cycle frequency, based on usage and surroundings, ensuring that users can enjoy fresher food items for longer.

Samsung also made the model to be competitive both in capacity and design as well. To enhance the capacity benefits of having a refrigerator with a wider width than common type, Samsung applies SpaceMax technology which has been the heritage of Samsung refrigerator. The fridge makes use of thin walls and efficient insulation to increase the storage volume while maintaining consistent temperatures. The extra storage space does not impact the exterior of the refrigerator, either, as the relatively compact size creates more room in users’ homes.

Apart from its performance and storage capabilities, the refrigerator brings a sleek design that makes it a great aesthetic fit for modern homes. It boasts a fully flat door and a recessed handle that grants the refrigerator a harmonious aesthetic. The Gentle Lighting controls brightness and prevents glare as well.

Availability 

The energy-efficient Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer will be available in three capacity variants (538L, 508L and 458L) depending on the region, launching in Europe, CIS, the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Canada and Africa.

The refrigerator is expected to be available from April in Europe and other regions sequentially.

The key consumer benefit of Samsung’s collaboration with Tesla allows SmartThings Energy to connect to Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging and EVs, allowing SmartThings Energy to display information relating to users’ energy production, storage and usage.

Additionally, consumers will be able to better prepare for power disruptions and outages through SmartThings Energy’s ability to sync with the Tesla app’s Powerwall “Storm Watch” function. This means that in the case of extreme weather events such as typhoons or heavy snowfall, users can be alerted through SmartThings on their connected Samsung TVs and mobiles in addition to the Tesla app. What’s more, they can activate AI Energy Mode before and during power outages to extend the remaining backup energy stored in Tesla Powerwall.

Samsung’s utilization of the Tesla API is part of its continual drive toward making substantial progress on the Net Zero Home project and enhancing the multi-device experience of SmartThings users.

We recently published FleetAPI, allowing developers to interact with Powerwall, Solar and Wall Connector in addition to our vehicles. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will mark the beginning of a new chapter for home appliances today at Bespoke Life 2023, the company’s third annual showcase of the latest updates to its Bespoke lineup[1]. The livestream that happened on 7 June, 10PM on Samsung Malaysia’s official website, newsroom, and YouTube channel, offered an opportunity to discover how the company’s expanded “Bespoke Life” vision is transforming users’ lives through sustainability, connectivity, and design.

“Bespoke Life embodies Samsung’s commitment to making our homes and future more sustainable by reimagining the appliances we rely on every day,” said Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of the DX (Device eXperience) Division at Samsung Electronics. “By introducing new and creative ways for users to ‘Bespoke’ their life, our latest products and solutions empower anyone to enjoy a more sustainable, connected, and stylish lifestyle.”

Sustainable Life – Technologies That Make a Positive Impact

Samsung’s Bespoke Life concept was born out of the belief that home appliances are key to creating a more sustainable tomorrow. Accordingly, this year’s Bespoke event highlights Samsung’s efforts to further reduce carbon emissions across the entire product lifecycle. It also announced the launch of the new Less Microfiber Filter: a simple solution for minimizing microplastic emissions during laundry cycles.

From sourcing and production to distribution, usage, and recycling, Samsung is redesigning each stage of the product lifecycle to help reduce energy usage and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Examples of the company’s efforts to recycle more resources include operating a closed-loop recycling center, incorporating bioplastic material from waste oil into Bespoke refrigerators’ storage baskets, and expanding its use of recycled fishing nets. Once products have been manufactured, they are shipped to users in Samsung’s eco-packaging, which began replacing plastic tape and coil with paper earlier this year.

To encourage a more sustainable living during the product use phase, Samsung continues to expand services that make saving energy effortless. Which is why, this year, five new Bespoke appliances, including refrigerators, washers and dryers, dishwashers, and air conditioners, as well as Samsung’s Eco Heating System, will feature an upgraded version of SmartThings AI Energy Mode that will soon be available in 65 countries[2].

In addition to promoting reductions in carbon emissions and energy usage, Samsung continues to take an active role in tackling microplastic pollution. After developing a laundry cycle that reduces microfiber discharge by up to 54%[3], Samsung and Patagonia have teamed up once again to launch the Less Microfiber Filter. The Less Microfiber Filter is capable of capturing up to 98%[4] of microfibers shed during laundry cycles. When used to wash two kilograms of laundry four times a week, the filter can help reduce up to 132 grams of microplastic discharge per person per year — an amount equivalent to approximately eight 500ml plastic bottles. The Less Microfiber Filter is now available in Korea and the U.K., and will roll out to other countries in Q3 of this year.

Connected Life – Paving the Way for Hyper-Connected Homes

To “Bespoke” one’s life is to optimize devices in ways that streamline and empower your routine. By strengthening connectivity across the lineup and expanding AI to more product categories, Samsung is paving the way for a new era of hyper-connected homes.

Combining Samsung’s latest SmartThings enhancements and AI technology, Bespoke products offer a seamlessly automated home experience — one in which devices learn users’ usage patterns and provide personalized automation based on their smart home configuration and lifestyle. To make it easy for consumers to enjoy those experiences, Samsung has announced that it is integrating Wi-Fi support into all new Bespoke appliances and will make connectivity a standard in all Samsung appliance lineups in the coming years.

Its AI Cleaning Mode[8] intelligently monitors brush load and vacuuming air pressure to distinguish different cleaning environments,[9] including the floor type, and automatically optimizes settings such as suction power and brush speed[10] to maximize cleaning performance, usage time, and maneuverability. The vacuum also features a new All-in-One Clean Station that produces a powerful spinning cyclone to instantly and effectively[11] empty the dustbin.

Stylish Life – Taking Personalized Design to the Next Level 

The three million Bespoke refrigerators that have been sold worldwide since the lineup’s launch underline consumers’ resounding interest in appliances that offer more options and functionality than the old standards. Today, this rethinking of what appliances should offer users continues to define Bespoke design — a design approach that grows more dynamic and distinct each time it expands to a new product category.

As of this year, the Bespoke lineup now includes a total of 15 product categories available to consumers in 52 countries. Each expansion of the lineup presents an opportunity to cater to more lifestyles and needs.
