2016–2018: Introducing the World’s First WindFree Cooling

In January 2016, Samsung launched the world’s first WindFree air conditioner. Powered by patented technology, the first-generation WindFree air conditioner rapidly lowered indoor temperatures using three powerful air outlets and evenly dispersed the cool air through thousands of micro air holes when the air outlets closed to maintain a consistent and comfortable indoor temperature. This breakthrough cooling method was made possible through Samsung’s extensive R&D efforts and 11 global patents.

In 2017, Samsung expanded its WindFree lineup by introducing our first-ever wall-mounted WindFree air conditioner — building on the successful launch of the floor-standing model.

By 2018, Samsung integrated AI technology into WindFree cooling. AI Auto Cooling mode analyzed indoor and outdoor conditions along with user preferences to automatically adjust cooling, dehumidification and air purification settings for personalized comfort. Meanwhile, AI Purification mode activated air purification based on the concentration of fine dust. Furthermore, Bixby voice control enabled seamless operation of air conditioners as well as other SmartThings-connected appliances.

2019–2022: Elevating Comfort With Wide WindFree Cooling

The year 2019 marked the introduction of the second-generation WindFree air conditioner, boasting enhanced cooling performance and design. The air outlets were concealed within the front panel, creating a minimalist design that blended seamlessly with any interior. Samsung’s upgraded Wide WindFree technology delivered a richer, more powerful and evenly distributed cooling experience by improving airflow through a widened WindFree panel and over 270,000 micro air holes — more than double the previous model.

In 2020, Samsung introduced Easy Care to allow effortless cleaning and maintenance. The Easy Open Panel enabled quick disassembly without tools, while the Wash Clean feature facilitated heat exchanger cleaning for better hygiene and maintenance convenience.

By 2022, Samsung’s WindFree technology evolved beyond cooling to introduce Warm Breeze. By gently emitting air at 86-104°F (30-40°C), the feature ensured a cozy indoor environment while simultaneously purifying the air to significantly increase the versatility of WindFree air conditioners for year-round use.

2023–2024: Redefining Cooling With 3D Wide WindFree

The third-generation WindFree air conditioner, launched in 2023, represented another leap forward in design and performance. Samsung introduced a premium 3D silhouette design, crafted using advanced 3D metal press technology. This element added a new level of sophistication and texture to the exterior. Compared to the previous model, the air conditioner featured 1,500 additional micro air holes for an improved WindFree cooling experience.

In 2024, Samsung upgraded user convenience by integrating Bixby voice control into many more functions — from simple mode and temperature adjustments to complex multi-step commands and scheduling.

2025: Unlocking the Future of Air Conditioning With the WindFree Combo

This year, Samsung has once again taken its air conditioner innovation to the next level with the launch of the WindFree Combo[1]. The new Dry Comfort feature uses a temperature and humidity sensor to calculate the temperature of the heat exchanger, precisely adjusting refrigerant flow and moderating humidity levels. What’s more, the dehumidification feature reduces energy consumption by up to 30% compared to the previous model.

The AI-driven smart features have evolved to offer personalized climate control optimized for users’ living spaces. AI algorithms learn users’ movement patterns and analyze weather conditions, indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity to ensure ideal comfort. Moreover, the WindFree Air Conditioner now connects with Galaxy Watch automatically activating WindFree Wearable Good Sleep mode when it detects the user falling asleep and turning off the cooling when they wake up.[2]

In early October, Samsung Malaysia Electronics partnered with Atap.co, a homegrown interior design firm, to host an exclusive workshop for interior designers. The event, held at The Camellia in Gamuda Cove, showcased Samsung’s latest air conditioning products and featured an immersive session demonstrating how Samsung’s innovative, energy-efficient cooling solutions can complement smart living lifestyles for both new and existing homeowners.

Samsung’s BESPOKE AI Home, developed in partnership with Gamuda Land, highlights the fusion of modern living with cutting-edge technology and stylish design.

Samsung Newsroom explored why this advanced air conditioning technology has been so well-received by global consumers.

A recent Samsung survey[2] of 1,840 respondents from Brazil, India, Italy, Korea, Thailand and the United States revealed that 44.6% (820) favor WindFree air conditioning. More than half of these users (58%) selected “comfortable sleep” as their primary reason for choosing WindFree air conditioning. The results indicate that a growing number of consumers expect air conditioners to go beyond traditional cooling functions to offer options fit for any situation.

In addition, the survey showed that air conditioners are most used before and after bedtime. Nearly half (48%) of respondents use their air conditioners from 9 p.m. to bedtime, followed by 42% during sleep.

The advanced structure of air conditioners with WindFree technology allows airflow to be evenly distributed through 270,000 micro air holes[3]. Once the room reaches a set temperature, the unit automatically switches to WindFree mode — gently cooling the space without the unpleasant sensation of cold air on skin — and creates optimal conditions for deep sleep.

“Energy savings compared to normal mode” was the second reason users preferred WindFree air conditioning. As energy savings gain interest in the face of climate change, the survey results indicate that WindFree technology addresses consumer demands for reduced electricity consumption.

In WindFree mode, electricity use is reduced by up to 77%[4] compared to maximum cooling environments, offering substantial savings on electricity bills during peak summer months.

Additionally, respondents chose WindFree air conditioning to ensure “even cooling” (50%), “minimizing physical irritation” (48%) and utilize “AI automatic cooling” (44%).

WindFree air conditioner has received numerous international awards including top honors for the third consecutive year at the 2024 Korean Innovation Frontier Awards; the MCE Excellence Award at the 2024 Mostra Convegno Expocomfort (MCE), a leading global HVAC and refrigeration exhibition; and the Top Quality/Price award for the air conditioner category in 2022 from the German Institute for Quality and Finance (ITQF), one of Europe’s leading certification bodies.

Outdoor system makes WindFree units even more “wind-free,” helping spread its comfortable cool to every corner of the space

Samsung Electronics announced the global launch of its new DVM S2 Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) outdoor air conditioning unit that works with indoor units to provide exclusive WindFree Cooling everywhere without the discomfort of direct cold airflow when indoors.

“DVM S2’s efficient yet powerful performance exhibits how Samsung’s exclusive WindFree Cooling technology continues to advance,” said Young June Choi, Head of Air Solution Biz Group of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “This AI-controlled system is Samsung’s most advanced climate control solution yet, set to bring WindFree comfort to apartment blocks, small to midsize office buildings, and commercial buildings everywhere.”

DVM S2, Samsung’s sixth-generation Digital Variable Multi air conditioner, incorporates an outdoor-installed system for enhanced flexibility and functionality. It enables connection with up to 64 Samsung indoor air conditioning units for optimal comfort without unpleasant cold drafts. Compatible with Samsung’s 1Way, 4Way, 4Way 600×600, and wall-mounted models, DVM S2 is currently available in Europe and slated to be available in China in July 2021, followed by the Middle East, North America, and select markets in Asia.

Wider Frequency Range for Better WindFree Performance

The DVM S2 features innovative technologies including a more advanced scroll compressor with Advanced Flash Injection (AFI) technology, an enlarged heat exchanger with optimized refrigerant flow, a multi-serration fan, and an enhanced power module.

The more advanced AFI motor control technology allows for a wider frequency range of 10~180Hz. The new low of 10Hz (compared to the previous model’s 14Hz) making the system more stable at low frequencies, leading to better WindFree performance for draft-free, comfortable temperature control. The new high of 180Hz ensures more powerful cooling performance.

Bigger Heat Exchanger and Multi-Serration Fan

Compared to the same capacity models in the current DVM S series, the heat transfer area of the heat exchanger in all the new models are significantly larger. The new unit’s hybrid path is designed to optimize the refrigerant flow corresponding to the airflow profile. Moreover, its unique multi-serration fan minimizes the turbulence of the air vortex, applying different serration, considering the air velocity of the edge and the inside of the blade, respectively. Moreover, the highly efficient Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) reduces the loss of conducted electricity.

DVM S2’s new design is more aerodynamic and allows quieter operation, compared to previous generations. It has a more robust frame and reinforced structure with an upgraded exterior cabinet for reliability. The cooling operating range and external static pressure have been extended for flexibility in design, along with an upgrade on the emergency operation mode. Moreover, DVM S2 also features an on-device inverter check for better maintenance. Advanced technology for refrigerant sub-cooling control and installation condition analysis allowed for a smaller liquid pipe, which provides a 28% reduction in the amount of additional refrigerants used during installation compared to its predecessor.

AI Capabilities for Smarter, Faster Cooling

Thanks to its AI capabilities, DVM S2 detects indoor climate conditions to deliver optimized cooling and heating performance. AI Low Pressure Control learns the patterns of cooling operation and reaches the target temperature more rapidly, ensuring users in the room feel more at ease at the desired temperature. Meanwhile, AI High Pressure Control maintains the optimal high pressure by making adjustments based on the installed environment. AI Defrost Control provides the best timing for defrost operations, and hence offers increased comfort during heating. In addition, DVM S2’s advanced AI algorithms can detect refrigerant leaks in real-time and send alerts immediately so users can monitor and manage their units quickly without compromising comfort.

The unique AI-based service solution, available on Samsung’s 2018 smart home appliances, essentially enables devices to diagnose themselves for not only system errors, but to enhance efficiency and to help users use their appliances better.

To provide an example of how HomeCare Wizard works, just imagine if a refrigerator starts to provide less cooling than usual. HomeCare Wizard will immediately detect and provide an alert that something is off, as well as diagnose the cause of the problem without requiring the visit of a technician. Whereas similar services’ diagnoses are typically limited to cut-and-dry system errors, HomeCare Wizard’s advanced algorithm also alerts users of less obvious factors that may be affecting their device’s efficiency, in particular non-system related errors. For instance, if the air conditioner’s breeze isn’t quite cool enough due to something like a contaminated filter, which a user can easily clean on his or her own, HomeCare Wizard can quickly diagnose such issues.

Therein lies another of the solution’s key benefits. If HomeCare Wizard determines that a particular issue does not require a service professional to be dispatched to a user’s home, it will provide simple instructions to help users solve the problem by themselves. This reduces the need for users to schedule such visits, and helps them find the solutions they need faster.

Identifying and explaining an issue’s exact source can also be difficult at times and in such cases a user will need to call a Samsung service center to get to the bottom of the problem. As HomeCare Wizard sends the device’s diagnostic data directly to the service center, the service center will be fully aware of the nature of the problem before the call is even made.

More often than not, when appliances don’t behave the way users are supposed to and it is difficult to figure out why, the result is hours spent scouring the web or contacting a service center for answers. In other instances, users are forced to wait for a technician to visit their home.
