Eating fruits and vegetables is essential for health, but their benefits are often hard to notice. What if the body’s response to diet were easier to see?

For the first time in a smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch8 series introduces Antioxidant Index — a feature that measures antioxidant levels to show how diet and lifestyle impact health.

Building on insights from part one with Hyojee Joung of Seoul National University, Samsung Newsroom spoke with Jinyoung Park of the Health H/W R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, to discuss how the Galaxy Watch8 series’ sensor was developed.

▲ Jinyoung Park

From Food Logs to a Five-Second Scan

Tracking meal quality and nutrient intake has typically required detailed food logs or blood tests. With the Galaxy Watch8 series, users can instead press a thumb against the back of the device for about five seconds to measure carotenoid[1] levels in the skin — displayed as an Antioxidant Index.

At the core of this process is Samsung’s advanced BioActive Sensor. “The sensor uses multi-wavelength absorption spectroscopy, shining light of various wavelengths onto the skin and analyzing the absorption and reflection patterns,” said Park. “The Galaxy Watch8 series is the first wearable to measure organic compounds in the body through skin absorption spectra.”

Carotenoids are electron-rich compounds made up of 40 carbon atoms that strongly absorb blue light — the principle behind Antioxidant Index. When the sensor emits yellow, blue, purple and green LED light, carotenoids absorb some wavelengths and reflect others. By analyzing the reflected light, their concentration can be measured. “Consistent consumption of fruits and vegetables leads to greater carotenoid accumulation in the skin, causing the index to rise,” she added.

Skin spectra also include signals from melanin and hemoglobin. “To minimize these effects, we chose the finger as the measurement site to reduce melanin interference and applied a pressing method to momentarily restrict blood flow and lessen hemoglobin’s impact,” Park explained. Even the simple act of pressing a thumb against the sensor reflects careful design and extensive consideration.

Miniaturizing Accuracy

Samsung began researching sensors for Antioxidant Index in 2018. The challenge was building a sensor small enough for a watch yet accurate enough to rival large laboratory equipment.

“Even the slightest change in the arrangement of LEDs and photodiodes could affect results,” Park recalled. “We conducted countless tests to find the optimal configuration.”

▲ Sensor prototypes developed before integration into the Galaxy Watch8 series

To ensure accuracy, the team validated the sensor using Raman spectroscopy — a laser-based technique widely used in research and clinical settings to detect the accumulated amount of skin carotenoids by measuring molecular vibrations. “Raman spectroscopy requires large, complex equipment, making it impractical for daily use,” she explained. “In the Galaxy Watch8 series, we applied skin reflection method based on LED-PD to miniaturize the sensor and improved accuracy by cross-checking results with Raman spectroscopy.”

The team also ran comparative studies with blood tests and clinical trials. “We validated the accuracy of noninvasive measurements by comparing carotenoid levels in blood with sensor readings,” said Park. “Clinical participants photographed and logged every meal for a week, allowing us to compare their fruit and vegetable intake against the sensor data. With a statistically significant sample of several hundred participants, we scientifically verified the sensor’s performance.”

Park stressed that collaboration was key to development. “In addition to long-standing work with Joung, we conducted clinical research with Samsung Medical Center and partnered with the University of Connecticut to collect data from diverse ethnic groups,” she added. “Experts in nutrition, medicine and consumer analysis formed a close network of collaboration that made commercialization possible.”

Getting the Most Out of Antioxidant Index

How often should Antioxidant Index be measured? “It usually takes two to three weeks for carotenoids from food to build up in the skin to detectable levels,” Park explained. “We recommend maintaining consistent healthy eating habits for at least two weeks and measuring once or twice a day at the same time.”

The Samsung Health app provides dietary tips based on Antioxidant Index and displays changes in clear reports. Users can view daily, weekly, monthly and yearly data to monitor health and lifestyle patterns over time.

https://img.global.news.samsung.com/my/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Samsung-Mobile-Galaxy-Watch8-series-Antioxidant-Index-Bioactive-Sensor_main3_compressed.mp4

▲ Antioxidant Index trends in the Samsung Health app

Beyond diet, Antioxidant Index can also reflect changes in exercise and lifestyle. “Carotenoids decrease when free radicals are excessively generated in the body, causing Antioxidant Index to drop,” she added. “For example, it may fall temporarily after unusually intense exercise.”

Google Gemini — available on a smartwatch for the first time — adds another layer to Antioxidant Index. “I once asked Gemini to suggest nearby restaurants with antioxidant-rich foods, and it gave me helpful options,” Park recalled. “Combining Antioxidant Index with personalized AI could further expand tailored healthcare.”

A Health Interpreter on the Finger

Park described Antioxidant Index as an interpreter that translates daily meals and lifestyle rhythms through a small light on the finger. “We often don’t realize how we eat or how much stress we’re under,” she said. “I hope Antioxidant Index can serve as a health interpreter that helps people better understand their well-being.”

“Disease prevention begins with healthy eating and lifestyle habits,” she continued. “With chronic illness rising rapidly among younger generations, Antioxidant Index can provide meaningful guidance in building healthier routines.”

Park added that Antioxidant Index is just one part of the bigger picture. “The Galaxy Watch series and Samsung Health offer valuable features like Sleep Score and Energy Score,” said Park. “By integrating these functions, we aim to deliver more comprehensive insights and a wider range of health information to users.”

As living to 100 becomes increasingly common, the focus is shifting from lifespan to healthy aging. The Galaxy Watch series is poised to open the next chapter in personalized health management.

Aging is not fixed — it can speed up or slow down depending on diet and lifestyle. That’s why healthy aging has become a growing focus in recent years.

Antioxidants play a key role in this process, helping neutralize free radicals and protect the body from oxidative stress. The Galaxy Watch8 series debuts Antioxidant Index — the first smartwatch feature to measure the body’s antioxidant status and support more effective health monitoring.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with Hyojee Joung — President of the Korean Nutrition Society and professor at Seoul National University (SNU), who participated in developing and validating the new feature — about this breakthrough and the importance of antioxidant care.

▲ Hyojee Joung

Why Antioxidant Care Matters

“Why do I feel tired so easily?”

Free radicals are natural byproducts of energy production in the body, but unhealthy habits can cause them to build up. “Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, poor diet, UV exposure and stress drive overproduction — triggering oxidative stress and accelerating aging,” said Joung.

Persistent exhaustion may signal excess free radicals in the body. “They can weaken immunity, cause fatigue and speed up visible signs of aging such as wrinkles or pigmentation,” Joung explained. “As oxidative stress accumulates, the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and certain cancers increases — making antioxidant management essential.”

▲ Excessive free radicals from an unhealthy lifestyle can raise the risk of chronic disease.

“Antioxidant capacity isn’t a matter of youth or fitness — it requires consistent care throughout life,” Joung emphasized, noting that daily fruit and vegetable intake is the easiest and most effective place to start.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants such as carotenoids and vitamins C and E. Because the body’s natural production of antioxidant enzymes declines with age, sufficient dietary antioxidant intake provides the foundation for sustainable health.

However, for most people, it’s not easy to objectively assess whether their everyday diet is truly balanced. The Galaxy Watch8 series’ Antioxidant Index was developed to address this challenge.

Tracking Antioxidant Levels With Galaxy Watch8 Series

“Is my diet healthy enough?”

For anyone wondering how healthy their diet is, Samsung Health now offers a quick answer. Using rear sensors, the Galaxy Watch8 series measures an Antioxidant Index — based on carotenoid levels in the skin — to assess fruit and vegetable intake within seconds.

“Carotenoids are the red, yellow and green pigments in fruits and vegetables,” said Joung. “Because the human body cannot produce them, carotenoid levels reflect dietary intake.”

The Galaxy Watch8 series uses a reflection spectroscopy sensor. When light of a specific wavelength shines on the skin, carotenoids absorb some and reflect the rest. By analyzing the reflected light, the device estimates carotenoid levels.

Previously, measuring antioxidant levels required blood samples and complex laboratory procedures. Now, users can simply place a thumb on the back sensor for five seconds to see instant results. Based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) daily recommendation of 400 grams of fruits and vegetables, results appear as:

Very low – Less than 50% of the recommended intake

Low – 50% to less than 100% of the recommended intake

Adequate – 100% or more of the recommended intake

▲ Joung measures her Antioxidant Index with Galaxy Watch8 Classic.

Joung explained that although Antioxidant Index does not represent the body’s full antioxidant capacity, it serves as a practical and meaningful indicator of daily antioxidant status by reflecting carotenoid intake from fruits and vegetables — major sources that help strengthen the body’s antioxidant system.

Antioxidant Index: A Reliable and Validated Health Indicator

“How should I respond to my Antioxidant Index reading?”

The Galaxy Watch8 series is the first smartwatch to measure antioxidant levels — a breakthrough built on years of research. Samsung began collaborating with Joung and her team in 2018 to explore how this capability could be applied to wearables.

A dietary intervention study conducted by the Graduate School of Public Health at SNU confirmed that skin carotenoid levels reliably indicate fruit and vegetable intake. “Over six weeks, we provided meals with varying carotenoid content to 80 participants and observed their skin carotenoid levels increased within one to two weeks,” Joung said.

▲ Results from a dietary intervention study with 80 participants at SNU

When users measure their Antioxidant Index, the Samsung Health app provides feedback such as “Have one more tomato today” or “Try 50 grams of pumpkin.” These recommendations are based on proposals from Joung’s team. “It’s important to give dietary guidance in language users can easily understand,” she explained. “We created the foundational data that trained an algorithm to adapt suggestions to individual preferences.”

The research team plans to keep refining the feature to deliver more accurate insights and support more effective antioxidant management.

Tips for Using Antioxidant Index

Joung shared four tips for making the most of the Galaxy Watch8 series’ Antioxidant Index.

① Consistency is key — don’t worry about daily fluctuations.

Unlike blood glucose, Antioxidant Index does not change immediately. A day or two of eating more fruit will not raise the score right away. With steady habits, improvements usually appear after one to two weeks. Alcohol, excessive exercise and stress may cause temporary dips, but levels typically recover — so focus on small, sustainable changes.

② Measure at the same time, with the same finger.

For accuracy, measure at a consistent time each day — such as after waking, before bed or after lunch — and always with the same finger, like the right or left thumb.

③ Check results alongside other Samsung Health indicators.

Antioxidant levels are linked not only to diet but also to sleep and stress. Checking Antioxidant Index with sleep quality and stress data provides a more holistic view of health.

④ Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.

To reach the WHO’s recommended 400 grams per day, add colorful fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots and bell peppers. A broader mix of colors can deliver greater antioxidant benefits, even at the same quantity.

Small Steps, Big Changes

“Whenever I meet someone, I have them try Antioxidant Index. It’s fun to see their surprise at how quickly the results appear,” said Joung, an active Galaxy Watch8 Classic user. “Being able to check instantly is a huge advantage.”

“Many people try to manage antioxidants for disease prevention and healthy aging, but there hasn’t been a clear way to track progress,” she continued. “Antioxidant Index not only shows whether fruit and vegetable intake is sufficient but also raises awareness of the importance of antioxidants — and that alone is meaningful.”

“What matters is consistency, not perfection. Even small steps, like adding one serving of fruits or vegetables to your meal, can create meaningful change over time,” Joung emphasized. “I’m truly happy to see such an innovative feature come to life before my retirement.”

Antioxidant Index delivers results in just five seconds — a simple step toward better health. In the second part of this series, Samsung Newsroom will hear from one of the Galaxy Watch8 series’ developers who helped make this groundbreaking feature possible.

Feeling pressure to plunge into ice baths or stock up on supplements to “optimize” your life?

Biohacking is about turning personal health data into micro-upgrades that boost wellness and longevity. Early biohackers might have chased these gains with extreme diets, supplements and experimental techniques. But if you scroll your social feed today, tech leads the conversation.

At the forefront of this tech-driven movement is the Galaxy Watch8 series. Seamlessly integrating into your daily routine, it quietly tracks key lifestyle metrics so you can see how the choices you make throughout the day impact your health.

Before we dive in, let’s do a quick check-in: how many of these biohacks are already part of your routine?

Already acing your biohacks? The Galaxy Watch8 series refines each habit for faster, smarter gains.

Optimize Your Sleep with Biohacking

We spend about 30% of our lives asleep, yet irregular schedules and sub-optimal environments still undermine rest. The Galaxy Watch8 series optimizes sleep by analyzing your sleep patterns and environment, identifying issues, and giving actionable tips to help build consistent, restorative sleep habits.

How can I follow a regular sleep schedule?

Wear Galaxy Watch8 for three nights to unlock Bedtime Guidance. It analyzes your sleep patterns and recommend the best times to wind down, based on your sleep pressure and circadian rhythm, helping you reset your sleep schedule and maximize alertness during the day.

How can I improve my sleep quality?

Galaxy Watch8 tracks every toss, turn and breath of your night. Each morning you get an in-depth sleep analysis based on your sleep stages, heart rate, skin temperature and oxygen level, highlighting what helped or hindered your rest. You can also access a Sleep Environment Report which leverages data from your other SmartThings devices to analyze room temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and light levels. With this data at your fingertips, you can easily optimize your room conditions for a better night’s sleep.

What can I do during the day to improve my sleep?

Once your sleep patterns are defined, Sleep Coaching assigns you a Sleep Animal and delivers personalized tips like adding a quick meditation session or skipping late-day caffeine. With Galaxy Watch8, small, daily habit upgrades are easy, and better nights are within reach.

Optimize Your Workouts with Biohacking

Some people train for marathons. Others just want to feel less stiff after sitting all day. So how do you reach your goals while staying motivated and avoiding injury? The Galaxy Watch8 series gives you all the answers, all while sitting snugly on your wrist thanks to its sleek design and dynamic lug system.

How do I set the ideal fitness goal for me?

Galaxy Watch8’s built-in Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) sensor measures your body fat percentage, body-water content and skeletal muscle mass, so you get a comprehensive snapshot of your body. These insights help you create a personalized training plan and track every step of your progress.

How can I start running more consistently?

Start with Running Coach, which analyzes your pace and fitness level after just a 12-minute run to build a custom routine. It also keeps you motivated during your runs with real-time feedback, helping you to reach your goals. Worried about potential injury? Running Coach provides tailored training programs at the ideal intensity, helping you gain speed safely.

How can I maximize recovery after training?

Samsung Health gives you the tools for optimal post-workout recovery. Check your heart rate after an intense workout and get recommendations on water intake based on sweat loss, so you can get the rest you need to come back stronger.

[Bonus Tip] Try Zone 2[1] interval training, known to improve endurance and boost fat burning potential. Galaxy Watch8 sets personalized Heart Rate Zones (HR Zone) based on your fitness level to help you stay within your personal HR Zone 2 for peak results.

Optimize Your Nutrition with Biohacking

Now that sleep and activity are under control, turn to the everyday habits that drive healthy aging. The Galaxy Watch8 series is the first smartwatch to track antioxidant levels, giving you a real-time view of your cellular health and how each lifestyle choice shapes it. Just put your thumb on the back sensor to get Instant Nutritional Feedback that used to require lab tests.

How do I know if I’m eating enough fruits and vegetables?

Use the Antioxidant Index to see how your diet and lifestyle habits impact healthy aging. Within just five seconds, it measures the carotenoids — natural antioxidants from fruits and veggies — stored in your skin and provides a score out of 100. It also offers tips to boost your score, like adding more colorful produce such as carrots, broccoli and oranges to your meals.

How can I cut down on unhealthy habits?

First, we must learn more about how our bodies are affected by these unhealthy habits. Your Energy Score provides insights on how factors such as alcohol intake and late-night snacking affect your health, while Antioxidant Index directly shows the impact of these habits — motivating you to change your ways and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

How can I easily track my water intake?

Proper hydration is essential for performing at your best, but it is often difficult to track. With Samsung Health, you can track your water intake with just a tap and set a daily hydration goal. Galaxy Watch8 will handle the rest by sending personalized reminders and monitoring trends, making it effortless to stay on top of your game.

The Galaxy Watch8 series turns biohacking from buzzword to habit — personal, actionable and effortless. Wear it, watch the insights roll in, and let better health become second nature.

Navigating today’s scattered health data and a healthcare system geared towards treating illness, not preventing it, hinders our ability to build healthy habits and prioritize long-term wellbeing. So how do we take back control?

Powered by Samsung’s cutting-edge sensor technology that provides a holistic, real-time overview of our health, the new Galaxy Watch8 series[1] shifts the focus to preventative care. It provides clear, actionable insights based on your lifestyle patterns to help you understand your body and mind more deeply, build healthy habits and help identify silent threats such as ectopic beats early on.

▲The Galaxy Watch8 series’ Antioxidant Index allows you to monitor your antioxidant intake by measuring carotenoid levels in the skin.

Preventative Care Through Early Detection

With new heart metrics, Galaxy Watch8 series spots the potential for health issues sooner, so you can prevent them before they start:

Ectopic Beat Detection: Galaxy Watch8’s enhanced Electrocardiogram (ECG)[2] can better capture ectopic beats – premature heartbeats that often go undetected in routine checkups as they frequently occur without noticeable symptoms. It is well known that frequent ectopic beats can be considered clinically significant and may lead to arrhythmias that drive up stroke and heart-failure risk. Galaxy Watch8 series provides enhanced ECG measurement with the ability to differentiate instances of frequent ectopic beats providing earlier insights to support preventive care.

Vascular Load: While you sleep, Galaxy Watch8 reads Photoplethysmogram (PPG) waveforms – optical signals associated with blood flow during sleep. It measures blood volume and vascular stiffness and precisely analyzes changes in stress on blood vessels. Because diet, stress, and rest all affect this metric, regular monitoring shows which habits to fine-tune and helps you cut cardiovascular risk before it takes hold.

Lifestyle Changes Motivated by Sensor-Driven Insights

The Galaxy Watch8 series’ advanced sensor now gives you more immediate insights for your nutrition and sleep patterns to steer you towards lasting, sustainable habits:

Antioxidant Index: Because lifestyle often outweighs genetics, the Galaxy Watch8 series shines a light on your daily choices. The BioActive Sensor measures skin carotenoids in five seconds using multi-wavelength absorption spectroscopy. After analyzing these carotenoids, an antioxidant which reflects fruit and vegetable intake, you are given a score of 0–100, which is categorized into one of three levels. This score shows how diet, UV light, alcohol and stress are impacting your antioxidant levels. With insufficient fruit and vegetable intake linked to major health risks, this non-invasive metric offers meaningful insight, promotes healthier choices and adds another layer of prevention to your daily routine.

Bedtime Guidance: Leveraging the science behind the two-process model of sleep regulation, the Galaxy Watch8 series tracks your circadian rhythm (internal body clock) and sleep pressure (how much your body needs sleep), over three days. It then interprets this data as a differential equation to calculate the optimal bedtime for waking up refreshed. The algorithm uses changes in sleep threshold and individual sleep needs throughout the day to deliver personalized guidance. Developed by KAIST and clinically tested at Samsung Medical Center, this feature helps build healthier sleep routines that lead to deeper, less interrupted sleep and more energized mornings.

Pioneering the Next Era of Preventative Care

Samsung’s sensor innovation is setting a new standard for preventative care. The Galaxy Watch8 series helps unify your patterns, expose hidden risks, and deliver real-time actionable insights so you can safeguard your health in advance. Samsung is not only redefining what a smartwatch can do today, but also accelerating the next wave of preventative-care breakthroughs for tomorrow.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today introduced Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic[1], establishing an iconic design identity across the entire Galaxy Watch lineup. Building upon the foundation of the Galaxy Watch Ultra’s cushion design, this series boasts the thinnest, most comfortable Galaxy Watch ever[2] for continuous health tracking. The Galaxy Watch8 series suits diverse lifestyles and provides advanced capabilities, setting a new standard for style and personalized health experiences.

“We are committed to empowering billions of people to live healthier lives through our innovative technology,” said TM Roh, President and Acting Head of the Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics. “By combining purposeful design with advanced sensor technology and an intuitive AI-powered experience, the Galaxy Watch8 series serves as a starting point for a healthier, more connected life, making it easier than ever to take meaningful steps toward users’ well-being.”

Redesigned Inside and Out for Ultimate Wellness

By reimagining both form and function, the Galaxy Watch8 series delivers unmatched comfort alongside industry-leading performance, making it the ultimate companion for everyday wellness. The distinctive cushion design, which debuted with Galaxy Watch Ultra, now defines the entire Galaxy Watch lineup. To achieve the thinnest design yet, the internal structure of Galaxy Watch8 was completely reengineered and its component mounting capability has been improved by 30%, resulting in an 11% thinner design. Combined with the Dynamic Lug system, this design moves naturally with the wrist, providing greater comfort and improved stability2 for a better fit and enhanced health-tracking accuracy.

Galaxy Watch8’s sleek profile is complemented by its exceptional performance. Even when you are outdoors under bright sunlight, the display is 50% brighter2 with a peak brightness of 3,000nits for easy visibility, and the enhanced battery2 ensures the watch can keep up with an active lifestyle. Moreover, the dual-frequency GPS provides more detailed and precise location results2 while our most powerful 3nm processor delivers faster performance and greater power efficiency. With the groundbreaking BioActive Sensor that enables deeper and more accurate health insights, the Galaxy Watch8 series helps provide a holistic view of your health.

Motivation for Lasting Health Changes

Sleep is a window into your overall health and each restful night allows your body and mind to recover immediately the very next day. That’s why Samsung is continuously advancing the sleep experience, offering tailored sleep coaching and helping to create an optimal sleep environment. With the updated Together feature, which now supports running, you can gamify your fitness journey by challenging friends and family.

If high level of stress persists, High Stress Alert will immediately signal so that you can take a break to help manage your stress levels in real-time. With Mindfulness Tracker, you can record your mood and receive guidance on breathing exercises to relieve your stress – all at once on your wrist.

Plus, the AI-powered Energy Score[8] gives you a snapshot of your energy level, combining physical and mental energy metrics so you can have a healthier day, every day.

Easier Watch Interaction with Wear OS and Gemini

Developed in close collaboration with Google, the Galaxy Watch8 series is the first smartwatch to come out of the box with Gemini[9], Google’s AI assistant, and be powered by Wear OS 6. Go hands-free using natural voice commands to get things done on the go with your Galaxy Watch apps like Samsung Health, Calendar, Reminder, and Clock. For example, you can ask Gemini to find a nearby cafe and text a friend to meet you there, all in one go. Or, if you’re ready to start your workout and you have a goal in mind, simply say, “Start a 30-minute run.” The watch seamlessly initiates the workout in Samsung Health.

In addition, thanks to the new One UI 8 Watch, the user interface is optimized for the size and shape of the watch face. The new Multi-Info Tiles provide easy access to health metrics, weather, events and more – all in a single, quick look. Moreover, the new Now Bar and depthless notifications ensure key activities are front and center.
