Lundu, Sarawak, 17 June 2019 – Following Samsung’s longstanding vision to inspire the world and create the future with their innovative technologies, Samsung Malaysia Electronics launched ‘My School, My Home’, a place where education and accessibility converge in the hopes of improving and enriching the lives of all at SK Rambungan.

The launching of ‘My School, My Home’ officiated by Dato Roh Jae Yeol, Director of Corporate Affairs, Samsung Malaysia Electronics, Datuk Dr. Hj Abdul Rahman bin Junaidi, Minister of Rural Electricity Sarawak and Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Hajah Jamilah Haji Anu, State Assembly Women for Tanjong Datu, Sarawak

Located in the rural areas of Daerah Lundu, SK Rambungan is the school that represents the future of Lundu. However, as an educational institution, it lacked the basic resources needed for a conducive learning environment. Paired with the fact that many of the school’s students and teachers lived far away, making the daily commute to and from school a long and tiring journey, the number of students dwindled as the years went by.

‘My School, My Home’ is an initiative launched by Samsung Malaysia Electronics to give the students, teachers, and parents of SK Rambungan a better life with the help of two solutions: a better equipped resource center to improve the teaching and learning standards in the school – ‘My School’ – and hostel facilities to accommodate teachers and parents travelling from afar – ‘My Home’.

‘My School’ – a better equipped resource centre to improve the teaching and learning standards in the SK Rambungan

“At Samsung, we recognize that it is part of our responsibility to aid the improvement of the global community. We always aim to deliver groundbreaking innovations in hopes that we can help enrich lives and contribute to social prosperity. We hope that with this initiative, we can bridge the technology gap between rural students and their counterparts in the cities and in turn, we hope we can provide the residents at SK Rambungan with equal opportunities in terms of living and learning,” said Yoonsoo Kim, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

‘My School’ fully equipped with Samsung Galaxy tablets as well as a smart TV, was built for the students and teachers at the school to facilitate the teaching and learning process. For teachers and parents travelling from afar, “My Home” was erected, complete with air conditioning, home appliances and TVs for entertainment generously provided by Samsung. The existing children’s hostel facilities like the laundry areas were also upgraded, with the installment of proper washing stations and new washing machines.

Present at the launch was Minister of Rural Electricity Sarawak, Datuk Dr. Haji Abdul Rahman Bin Junaidi. “On behalf of everyone here at SK Rambungan, I would like to thank Samsung Malaysia Electronics for this initiative. To say that it has improved the lives of everyone here would be an understatement, as it has done so much more than that,” he said.

Datuk Dr. Haji Abdul Rahman Bin Junaidi also commended the ‘My School, My Home’ initiative and all parties who were involved. “Congratulations to everyone who has helped make this initiative a reality. Because of your hard work, the students of SK Rambungan have been given a platform where their ambitions and aspirations can flourish with access to digital education. We are very proud of what has been accomplished today and I urge that we all continue to support our national agenda in using ICT towards achieving a knowledge-based nation, to do our part in contributing towards a better Malaysia,” he said.

Kuala Lipis, Pahang, 13 April 2018 – Setting a positive environment, responding to people’s needs and helping them to live better is what Samsung strives to achieve in giving back to society. Many underprivileged areas are in need of clean water, sanitary common spaces, education and the support to hear them out – and Samsung is committed to providing solutions with its annual Love & Care corporate social responsibility programme.

Dato’ Roh Jae Yeol, Corporate Affairs Director of Samsung Malaysia Electronics, and Samsung volunteers receiving a warm welcome from the villagers.

Held in conjunction with Samsung’s 80th anniversary this year, 80 Samsung employees volunteered to visit the community at Kampung Ulu Tual, an orang asli village in Pahang that was ‘adopted’ by Samsung back in 2015. At the one-day programme, volunteers interacted with the village people, provided basic educational sessions and distributed basic and essential necessities.

Samsung volunteers taking part in planting 80 trees with the villagers of Kampung Ulu Tual in hopes of creating a greener environment for them to live in.

Apart from providing them the necessities; this time round, Samsung wanted to instil a deep appreciation on sustaining the environment around them. Therefore, an activity of planting 80 trees with the village children of Kampung Ulu Tual was in the line-up to create a greener environment for them to live in.

“We are glad to be back in Kampung Ulu Tual for the 4th year consecutive, to continue what we started under Samsung’s Love & Care programme. Before this, we had provided the basic living necessities for them to lead a better life filled with possibilities. To celebrate Samsung’s 80th Anniversary this year, we have decided to take a different approach by extending love and care to the environment as well. We hope that through this, we can inspire them to continue preserving and protecting Mother Nature. I’m proud of all Samsung volunteers today who have demonstrated exemplary volunteering work and we look forward for more initiatives in future,” said Mr Yoonsoo Kim, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

Children from Kampung Ulu Tual happily engaging with Samsung volunteers during the pop quiz session

Besides that, Samsung’s volunteer team utilised Samsung television for an educational session. Through screen mirroring technology, learning materials were projected and pop quizzes were conducted using Smart TV, in hopes that this will stimulate a positive learning attitude that will pave a wider path for a better future. This is part of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to increase literacy rates among the people of Kampung Ulu Tual, especially the young children.

A total of 400 solar LED lights have been donated by Samsung for the utilisation of 163 households in the village

Back in 2017, Samsung donated 300 portable solar LED lights to the village and although it was a significant help to the villagers, the tech company noticed that the village still needed more light. Hence, Samsung donated an additional 100 solar LED light units this year, so that the villagers would have enough lighting especially at night; to help them get by in their activities, chores and studies.

Before leaving the village, Samsung volunteers participated in a little bit of fun by having Love & Care’s annual ‘Tug of War’ match with the villagers of Kampung Ulu Tual. Monthly rations were also distributed to 163 households of Kampung Ulu Tual for the villagers’ daily consumption. “We have been incredibly fortunate over the years, and it’s only natural that we give back in any way we can. I’m excited for what the future holds and I hope that we continue to constantly keep our surrounding communities in mind no matter where we are or what we do,” Mr Kim concluded.

The Samsung Love & Care programme was previously known as Samsung’s Nanum Village initiative. The programme commenced earlier in 2015 as part of Samsung’s local Corporate Citizenship efforts.

“During Earth Hour each year, we see the whole world unite in conveying their support for the planet’s conservation. As Samsung promotes sustainable social development and support communities to create a better world, we are pleased to be a part of WWF’s mission in raising awareness on the importance of conserving our planet,” said Mr Yoonsoo Kim, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

Earth Hour 2018, organised and led by WWF, is a movement which aims to spark conversation and raise environmental awareness on climate change and staggering biodiversity loss. By switching off all lights for just one hour a year, this movement is also a sign of support for environmentally sustainable actions.

Samsung has always recognised the importance of conservation and has been a supporting party of WWF over the years. Adding on to that, WWF’s conservation efforts are also largely aligned to the tech company’s sustainability strategy in driving greater energy efficiency and savings across its business environment.

“As a leading corporation in the technology industry, Samsung’s on-going vision is to create a positive change and help its surrounding communities exist in a harmonious and ecological environment. Hence, by sending our employees to participate in this Earth Hour event, this will continue to build momentum towards a renewable future and sustainable lifestyle. We hope that our actions and partnership with WWF will set an example for all of our fans, consumers, and peers to take accountability for their ecological footprint and protect the planet,” added Mr Kim.

It all began in 2015 when Samsung Malaysia Electronics first set foot in Kampung Ulu Tual in Kuala Lipis, located in the eastern state of Pahang, for its community outreach initiative. Kampung Ulu Tual, a 3-hour drive from Malaysia’s bustling capital, is a village adopted by Samsung under its corporate citizenship banner. Samsung volunteers were reminded of the true meaning of friendship and teamwork after spending some time with the locals working to improve the infrastructure of the village, teaching them the learning tools of Samsung tablets, and immersing themselves in the village culture.

At that time, the initiative was known as the Nanum Village effort under the brand’s Hope for Tomorrow community building campaign. ‘Nanum’ means sharing in the Korean language and this fits perfectly with Samsung’s unwavering commitment to continue sharing meaningful innovations to sustain social development and support underserved communities all over the globe.

The first local mission took place two years ago where the indigenous community of Kampung Ulu Tual greeted all 56 Samsung volunteers with generous hospitality, warm smiles and captivating traditional performances. Their faces were beaming with excitement and villagers ‘crowned’ some volunteers with beautiful headgears decorated with colourful flowers and made of palm tree leaves as welcome gifts. Prior to this, the village had no access to a proper source of electricity since it is located in a secluded area. Samsung looked beyond the usual food and household supplies donation and decided to install solar panels to improve their electricity supply and Samsung refrigerators at their Pusat Didikan Komuniti (PDK) for the villagers so they can enjoy the facilities like a common household would. Samsung volunteers also helped the locals to repair their huts, ensuring that the villagers have decent everyday shelters from the rain or sun.

Kampung Ulu Tual’s Community Learning Center or Pusat Didikan Komuniti (PDK) has two full-time teachers stationed there to provide education to the children, and the hall would sometimes be used for other community-related activities. The presence of good electricity supply in the village paved way for the children to learn in a much more fun and engaging way. Samsung donated Smart TV, Galaxy Tab pre-loaded with fun educational contents and books for the children to turn the dream of education into reality. Samsung volunteers eagerly tutored the children on how to use the tablets and the pre-loaded apps during educational activities. A signage for the PDK was also raised as part of its community service.

The memories made in 2015 were so heartening that Samsung returned to improve the village and doubled their investment for the same mission the following year. Samsung volunteers participated and worked closely with the locals to improve the village by installing additional solar panels and lights, therefore improving the village’s electricity supply. To ensure that the villagers continue to have access to decent basic living necessities, Samsung donated food, homecare, sports and educational supplies. In addition to that, Samsung targets to prepare young villagers for their future academic achievements by teaching them the English language, therefore giving them the opportunity to master an additional language before they embark on the next step of their educational journey.

Samsung is set to return to Kampung Ulu Tual once more under the Samsung Love & Care Programme, a re-brand of Samsung Nanum Village initiative, to bring more improvements to its growing community. Samsung hopes that the Samsung Love & Care Programme will be a source of inspiration for more corporations to step up and help those communities in need and improve livelihoods to create a brighter and more sustainable future.

Kuala Lumpur, 18 August 2017 – For online shoppers wishing to make a difference and be involved in a philanthropic campaign, here is your chance as Samsung Malaysia Electronics is teaming up Lazada Malaysia to bring education and sports to underprivileged students around Malaysia. From 19th to 23rd August 2017, purchases of RM500 and above on Samsung products within the Samsung Official Store on Lazada will contribute to a pool where Samsung will donate Samsung Tab A tablets to 50 deserving “Tokoh Sukan 2017” winners from 50 selected under-served schools under the Pintar Foundation School programme.

Tokoh Sukan 2017, organised by schools in Malaysia under of the Ministry of Education, is an award to recognize students’ achievements in co-curricular activities, particularly in sports. Criterion of a Tokoh Sukan 2017 is based on the students’ highest achievements for the year – be it at school, district, state, national or international level. With the impending 29th SEA Games (Kuala Lumpur 2017), Samsung is partnering with Lazada to launch Lazada’s Mega Sports Day Expo to encourage more students to become active in sports.

“Customers who purchase any Samsung products via Samsung’s official online store on Lazada Malaysia during this campaign will be glad to know that they will be helping an underprivileged child to be better-rounded in education and sports. Our goal is to ensure that every student, especially those in under-served communities, obtain the relevant support they deserve in education. We believe these tablets will positively impact the children’s learning especially in today’s digital age,” said Lee Sang Hoon, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

In the spirit of the SEA Games and to build the nation’s drive for sports, Lazada will be donating sports equipments such as badminton sets, table tennis sets, footballs, volleyballs, netballs, hockey sticks and shin guards to the Tokoh Sukan 2017 winners as part of the Mega Sports Day Expo. Additionally, the official SEA Games merchandise store, FM Store will also be contributing SEA Games closing ceremony tickets to the winners.

“Pintar Foundation is doing a commendable job in providing educational support to the underserved communities as well as encouraging these children to be active in sports. Lazada Malaysia is very pleased to be able to contribute to such a meaningful programme and as such, we have structured a campaign specifically for this purpose. Our Mega Sports Day campaign will not only see us contributing sports equipment to the children but also encourage shoppers to be part of a charity programme. To reward our online shoppers, we will be giving away shopping vouchers worth RM15, 000 as our way of saying thank you,” said Hans Peter Ressel, CEO of Lazada.

“We are happy that prominent organisations such as Samsung Malaysia Electronics and Lazada Malaysia chose our Pintar Programme as their CSR platform to bring positive changes to the lives of children. This contribution is most valuable to the children – we have Samsung donating tablets to enhance classroom learning for the children and we have Lazada inspiring them on the field through their donation of sports equipment. We hope to see more students excelling in sports and becoming more digitally-savvy through this generous campaign,” said Karimah Tan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Pintar Foundation.
