Samsung’s air conditioners feature the ‘Good Sleep’ mode, helping people have pleasant sleep throughout the night by adjusting the temperature according to sleep stages. This mode has now been upgraded to allow users to connect their air conditioners with their Galaxy Watch series and Galaxy Ring[1], and have the ‘Good Sleep’ automatically activated when they fall asleep.[2]

The Effect of Temperature on Good Sleep

While often overlooked, the influence of a suitable ambient temperature on sleep is immense. The common experience of waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat or shivering in cold, is relatable for most people. This year, as a result of global warming, various regions across the globe experience unusual temperature patterns, with nights growing even warmer relative to days. As a result, numerous individuals struggled to get quality sleep, adversely impacting their daily routines and overall mood.

The difficulty and frustration people go through when having trouble sleeping are also reflected in air conditioner sales. Samsung’s air conditioner sales results in Korea showed that sales increased on hot days, but among those hot days, it especially peaked when tropical nights had persisted for consecutive days. People were highly agitated when their sleep was disturbed by heat, indicating a need for more suitable sleeping temperatures. Based upon the observation, Samsung decided to develop a mode on its air conditioners to help people get better sleep during the night.

The key point in this mode however, was that the optimal temperature for sleep is not fixed for the entire period that a person sleeps. This is why although many set their air conditioner to the ‘optimal’ temperature before going to bed, they still wake up. It varies according to the sleep stage a person is at – whether a person is falling asleep, in deep sleep, or waking from sleep. The team, in 2015, partnered with Kyunghee University to find the optimal temperature for each sleep stage, and develop an adequate algorithm for the air conditioner.

How it Functions

The ‘Good Sleep’ mode fluctuates the indoor temperature over a course of a person’s sleep cycle. Sleep consists of 5 stages – wake, REM (Rapid eye movement), and 3 stages of NREM (Non-rapid eye movement sleep). Each stage of sleep includes variations in brain wave patterns, eye movements, and body temperature. These five stages make up one complete sleep cycle which typically lasts about 90 minutes. Throughout the night, this cycle repeats itself approximately four to six times.

The ‘Good Sleep’ cycle adjusts the indoor temperature according to the stage. First, when a person falls asleep, temperature is quickly lowered within 5 minutes to immediately create a pleasant environment. The temperature is kept low consistently during the next 90 minutes to facilitate deeper sleep. Starting from 90 minutes, the air conditioner increases the temperature to prepare for the deeper stages of sleep – N2 and N3. In these stages, body temperature and blood pressure fall the most, indicating that outer temperature needs to be warmer. Temperature is increased within two degrees above target level to prevent awakening due to cold sensation.

Throughout the eight-hour sleep cycle, alternating periods of lighter REM sleep and deeper NREM sleep occur. The ‘Good Sleep’ mode continually modifies the temperature throughout the night, adjusting it approximately three times. Approaching the end of sleep, temperature is kept high, but gentle wind is blown to create a refreshing atmosphere.

In WindFree air conditioners, the Good Sleep mode works with WindFree cold air, and for normal models, air is blown out to meet the target temperature.

Automation with Galaxy Wearables

By connecting with the Galaxy Watch series or Galaxy Ring[3], users can seamlessly enjoy the benefits of the Good Sleep mode without manual adjustments via remotes. Upon purchasing either device, users can enable automatic activation and deactivation of the air conditioner through settings. Once configured, whenever the wearable detects that the user has begun sleeping, it initiates the Good Sleep mode accordingly. If the air conditioner was previously turned off, it will be switched on with the appropriate target temperature for Good Sleep. Alternatively, if it is already running but set too cold, it will adapt to a more comfortable sleeping temperature.

Samsung first attempted this connection back in 2018, before wearables had developed into a steady market like now. Members of the product planning team and software team pioneered collaboration of wearables and home appliances. However, it was only in 2023 when this service properly took place as a feature. By then, the wearable market itself had grown, and it had matured enough so that users even wore the devices to bed. Kyungju Lee, who took part in the project 6 years ago and now leads product planning for Room Air Conditioners, says, “We could see just by looking at friends and family around us, that the interest people had in the quality of their sleep had increased immensely. We felt that we needed to re-launch the feature we’d attempted in 2018. The right timing had come.”

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. held its 2025 Southeast Asia Tech Seminar in Bangkok, Thailand on June 20, unveiling its latest advancements in home appliances for the region. The seminar showcased how Samsung is bringing AI innovation to everyday living with smarter, more connected experiences across its appliance and mobile portfolio.

At the seminar, Samsung also showcased its new global refrigerator lineup, which brings to life the “Screens Everywhere” vision that was first unveiled at CES 2025. Notable features of the lineup include the debut of the 9-inch AI Home display and improved AI Family Hub experiences.

Another highlight was the introduction of the new Side-by-Side model which was recently launched for the Southeast Asian market. It features an integrated screen for enhanced usability, supports AI Energy Mode[9] through built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and includes Wide Auto Open Door, which allows users to open the door with just a light touch.

Smarter Laundry, Greater Efficiency

Samsung continues to lead in laundry solutions with AI-enhanced functionality that delivers higher levels of convenience and efficiency. In response to regional demands, Samsung is incorporating AI Wash [10]— previously exclusive to front-load washers — to the new Bespoke AI Top Load Washer for the first time. The top-load models also offer a range of other AI features, including AI Energy Mode and AI VRT+.

Additionally, the new Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer set offers the enhanced AI Wash+ and AI Dry+[11] features for smarter performance. Notably, they can recognize a wider range of fabric types than before, giving users a more personalized laundry experience[12]. The new Bespoke AI Laundry washer and dryer set also comes equipped with AI Home Screen that offer intuitive control and monitoring of essential information such as wash cycles and remaining detergent levels.

At the seminar, Samsung introduced the principles behind the AI features of its laundry lineup, particularly focusing on how its devices leverage AI to detect laundry and adjust the washing or drying cycle accordingly.

Diverse air conditioner solutions for smart living

Attendees at the seminar also learned about the new ‘Good Sleep’ mode, which allows users to connect their air conditioners with their Galaxy Watch series and Galaxy Ring, and enable automatic adjustment of the air conditioner from the wearable’s detection of their sleep stage.

The newly launched system air conditioner (SAC) lineup was also on display during the seminar, giving attendees the opportunity to discover more about Samsung’s intelligent climate solutions that offer seamless smart experiences with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Powerful, Intelligent Vacuum Cleaners

Samsung is also introducing its most advanced vacuum products yet. The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra is the world’s most powerful cordless stick vacuum,[13] boasting up to 400W[14] of suction power and AI Cleaning Mode 2.0,[15] which can now detect corner[16] types and floor variations[17] – such as carpets, hard floors, mats – for smarter cleaning. The seminar included a demonstration of the HexaJet Motor, AI algorithm, and All-in-one clean station, demonstrating Samsung’s innovative advancements across both hardware and software offerings.

Our 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub^TM[3] comes with AI Vision Inside[4], which uses an internal camera to identify up to 33 fresh food items that go in and out of the fridge. Users can easily manage their food list and get recipe recommendations for a more personalized kitchen experience. Providing a seamless and customized laundry solution, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo^TM, which will be launched in our region this quarter, intelligently adjusts the washing and drying performance for each load with AI Wash & Dry[5]. It also senses the weight of the laundry, fabric[6], and soil level to dispense the appropriate amount of water and detergent[7], and then adjusts the drying process to suit the weight and fabric.

The Bespoke AI Laundry ComboTM, which will be launched in all SEAO markets this year, presents innovative solutions for a fuss-free experience.

Even our TVs are smarter today, with Samsung TVs like the Neo QLED 8K coming with features like AI Customization Mode that adjusts the picture based on user preference. With AI Energy Mode, available when connected to SmartThings, it helps to monitor energy usage in real-time and adjusts to the environment, without compromising picture quality.

Two weeks ahead of the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, Samsung Electronics unveiled the next frontier of Galaxy AI with Galaxy Unpacked 2024 on July 10 (local time) at the Carrousel du Louvre — located underground the historic Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

Attendees were greeted by Galaxy Unpacked 2024 banners around the venue where an inverted glass pyramid reminiscent of the Louvre Museum stands.

The expanded power of Galaxy AI took center stage as Samsung debuted a new set of products including the Galaxy Z Fold6, Galaxy Z Flip6, Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Buds3 series.

Bright lights circled the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Seine River before gathering at the Louvre in the introductory video that announced the start of Galaxy Unpacked 2024. Anticipation filled the air as the auditorium chairs vibrated from the powerful surround sound.

“Because life-enhancing innovations should be open to all, we have been putting Galaxy AI into the hands of more people around the world. Galaxy AI will be available on 200 million Galaxy devices this year,” said TM Roh, President and Head of the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, in his keynote address. “Today, I am excited to announce we are building the Galaxy AI ecosystem in a way only Samsung can. We are proactively collaborating with industry leaders to develop and deploy safe and inclusive AI technology.”

In front of global media, partners and fans, Samsung presented how the latest Galaxy products will empower users to maximize health, boost productivity and unlock new levels of communication. Samsung Newsroom captured highlights from Galaxy Unpacked 2024 below.

Samsung’s New Healthcare Vision: Health Monitoring 24/7 With Galaxy AI

The showcase kicked off by highlighting a personalized healthcare solutions that has evolved with Galaxy AI. The audience welcomed the Galaxy Ring, an innovative wearable previewed earlier this year that has become central to the Galaxy AI healthcare vision.

Next, Samsung released the Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch7. The most powerful and premium device in the Galaxy Watch series, the Galaxy Watch Ultra boasts high power efficiency, state-of-the-art sensors and a rugged design that is perfect for adventure and outdoor lifestyles.

Complete with an advanced battery and a wide range of features, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is equipped with Wear OS 5 — created in close partnership with Google.

Samsung’s Latest Foldable Form Factors: Thin, Lightweight and Now With Galaxy AI

Following heightened expectations from the wearables launch, attendees were eager to meet the Galaxy Z Fold6.

The slimmest and lightest Galaxy Z Fold series to date, the Galaxy Z Fold6 contains cutting-edge hinge technology that reduces the appearance of the crease in the display made from Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® 2 and Armor Aluminum.

AI takes productivity to the next level on the Galaxy Z Fold6. Audience members were awed by Circle to Search, created in partnership with Google, as the feature translated a menu in a foreign language with a simple gesture. Composer simplifies email writing by creating drafts based on prompts. Sketch to image, on the other hand, analyzes drawings from the user and generates images in various styles based on the sketch.

Samsung’s FlexWindow: Endless Self-Expression and Productivity With Galaxy AI

As highlighted in the video with K-pop group TOMORROW X TOGETHER, the Galaxy Z Flip6’s AI camera is a powerful medium for self-expression.

The audience was impressed by how ProVisual Engine detects, analyzes and optimizes subjects with AI, while FlexCam supports hands-free photography and videography for next-level filming.

Creativity and individuality have reached new heights with FlexWindow and Galaxy AI. Users can express themselves through personalized AI-generated wallpapers or FlipSuit cases that interact with their phones for an added level of fun.

Interpreter shines on the Galaxy Z Flip6. Now, users can communicate in different languages by leveraging the main screen and cover screen to translate conversations in real time.

The Galaxy Buds3 and Galaxy Buds3 Pro debuted at the event as well. Attendees experienced how AI recognizes users’ surroundings and actively adjusts noise levels to create studio-quality audio.

Long-Lasting Partnerships for a Brighter Future

Samsung is committed to providing more effective solutions through collaboration. A partner for more than 10 years, Google has worked with Samsung to deliver better user experiences.

Jenny Blackburn, Vice President of Gemini User Experience at Google, shared how Gemini AI is deeply integrated into the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. To conclude the presentation, Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Platform and Devices at Google, revealed that Google and Qualcomm will unveil the XR platform with Samsung later this year.

Praises Echoed From the Experience Zone

Attendees filled the experience zone inside the venue, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newly launched Galaxy products. Like always, fans praised the upgraded devices and the latest AI features.

“The Galaxy Z Flip6 will be my third Z Flip phone. I have high expectations because the camera has improved so much,” said Ugnė Graželyte, an influencer from Lithuania (@ugnegraz) who has been using Galaxy products for four years. “I liked the design and colors of the Galaxy Ring too.”

Several Samsung Member Stars, Samsung brand ambassadors, visited the experience zone as well. Adam Safi, a Samsung Member from France who was filming with the new Galaxy S24 Ultra, has used Samsung devices for more than 10 years. “I’m looking forward to the new design of the Galaxy Buds3 as it will be more practical in controlling the device,” he said. “I heard the noise canceling function is excellent, so I’m excited to try the product.”

Several Samsung Member Stars, Samsung brand ambassadors, visited the experience zone as well. Adam Safi, a Samsung Member from France who was filming with the new Galaxy S24 Ultra, has used Samsung devices for more than 10 years. “I’m looking forward to the new design of the Galaxy Buds3 as it will be more practical in controlling the device,” he said. “I heard the noise canceling function is excellent, so I’m excited to try the product.”

Galaxy AI’s creative features attracted the attention of attendees at the experience center. “I love drawing. Sketch to image is a powerful tool that can be easily used — even by beginners who don’t know how to draw,” said Maria Soldier, an influencer from Spain (@mery_soldier). “I’m sure it will be a feature that I use every day, so I’m looking forward to it.”

In addition, American actress Sydney Sweeney from the TV series Euphoria made a cameo appearance during Galaxy Unpacked 2024 and stopped by the experience zone to get her hands on the latest Galaxy products. “The new colors of the Galaxy Z Flip6 are stunning,” she said.
