Samsung Malaysia Electronics has awarded 6 winning teams in its recent Developer Day hackathon to reimagine foldable experiences for Malaysians. The students pitched ideas to enrich UI/UX on apps for the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip, towards Samsung’s goal of mainstreaming foldable smartphones in Malaysia.

“The hackathon is a celebration of continuous mobile innovation that benefits the lives of consumers. We were inspired by Gen Z’s ideas on bringing impactful and relatable experiences to the Galaxy Z series. This also underlines our ESG mission to empower young talent to make their mark in the tech space. We want to congratulate the winners and look forward to bringing more of these initiatives to life in the future,” said KM Liew, Vice President & Head of Mobile eXperience, Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

Taking place from 14-15 June, 3 winning teams were selected each day across the 2-day event, bringing it to a total of 6 winning teams. The winning teams took home prizes of Samsung products worth RM39,188 per day.

The Developer Day hackathon enabled students to leverage Samsung and Android platform’s capabilities to flex tech creativity and bring real-life benefits to users. It was organised in collaboration with Taylor’s University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

The hackathon was also part of the many activities during Samsung’s Galaxy Space, a Gen Z-inspired experiential event that is open to the public from 9-18 June.

This comes on the back of Samsung’s recent event, ‘Reimagining Foldables for Malaysians’, where the company collaborated with top local organisations to showcase the optimisation of local apps that Malaysians use on a daily basis, in bringing it closer to their hearts.

With foldable smartphone shipments expected to reach 16 million units worldwide[2] – an increase of 73% year on year – the form factor is rapidly becoming mainstream, and shipments are expected to grow to 26 million units in 2023. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the launch of Samsung Space Tycoon (“Space Tycoon”), a virtual playground built inside the global metaverse platform Roblox. Space Tycoon is a virtual space where users can create, play games and share experiences using Samsung Electronics’ products together with alien characters in space, taking design and functionality cues from business simulation ‘tycoon’ genre.

Samsung has created this service targeting Gen Z customers to provide them with an integrated, metaverse experience where they can create and enjoy their very own Samsung products. Samsung’s aim is to enable Gen Z customers to experience the brand and interact with one another.

“Space Tycoon is designed to be a playground where many customers can experience unlimited possibilities of virtual spaces,” said Jinsoo Kim, Executive Vice President at Corporate Design Center in Samsung Electronics. “We wanted to give our Gen Z customers a chance to experience Samsung products in a way they have never done before. We will continue to showcase content that can deliver more meaningful and entertaining digital experiences for both our current and future customers.”

Set in the Samsung Space Station as well as the research laboratory where alien characters conduct research on Samsung’s newest products, Space Tycoon consists of three specific play areas: the Mining Zone for resource procurement, the Shop for game item purchase and the Lab for product manufacturing.

In Space Tycoon, using the excavated resources, users can design various Samsung products — from Galaxy-smartphones to various TVs and home appliances — and purchase or upgrade game items. Users can get creative by starting with real-life products and giving them a makeover to become in-game gadgets. For example, the foldable smartphone Galaxy Z Flip can turn into a bag or a scooter, just as users will be more imaginative with the Jet Bot vacuum cleaner turning into a hoverboard or The Sero lifestyle TV into a one-person helicopter.

Currently, over 20 Samsung products are available in the Shop where the colors of the purchased items can change randomly depending on the levels achieved and new series of products will be regularly updated.

Space Tycoon will simultaneously launch in 14 languages, including Korean, English, Chinese and Spanish. A decade later, Samsung shipped 4 times more foldable devices in 2021 than in 2020,  exceeding the three-fold market growth that analysts expected.[1]

Consumer enthusiasm for Samsung foldables is exemplified by the success of the Galaxy Z series. In the first month since launch, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G exceeded total accumulative sales of Samsung foldable devices in 2020.

The hinge also added a new layer of functionality to Samsung foldables, allowing them to stand on their own, which makes them perfect for watching content, making video calls, or taking hands-free selfies.

Samsung’s dedication to creating new foldable innovations enabled it to achieve yet another major milestone in 2021 with the release of the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G – the first foldables to receive an IPX8 water resistance rating.
