On June 8, Samsung Electronics launched the 32-inch Color E-Paper — an ultra-low-power digital signage solution capable of delivering rich, high-quality visuals.

Behind this innovative product lies Samsung’s proprietary Color Imaging Algorithm technology, developed through close collaboration between the Visual Display (VD) Business and Samsung Research at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with two key figures behind its development — Daewoong Cho from the VD Business and Iljun Ahn from Samsung Research — to learn more about the creation of Color E-Paper.

Paradigm Shift: Ultra-Slim, Ultra-Light and Ultra Low-Power

The Color E-Paper sets a new benchmark for digital signage — redefining hardware, operational methods and content expressiveness.

The globally released EM32DX model (32-inch) sports an ultra-slim profile, measuring just 8.6 millimeters at its thinnest point, and boasts a lightweight structure, weighing only 2.5 kilograms with the battery.

“We designed the device to be ultra-slim and ultra-light so that it can be installed easily, even in tight spaces,” said Cho, who led Color E-Paper’s hardware development. “This versatility means it can serve as a menu board at a café entrance or be mounted on a wall to function as a seasonal, emotionally resonant interior display.”

One of the biggest advantages of the Color E-Paper is its ultra-low power consumption, as it draws 0.00W[1] while displaying a static image. This allows content to remain visible for extended periods on battery power alone, significantly reducing energy usage in retail environments. Changing the display image requires only a minimal amount of power as well. In addition, as part of Samsung’s commitment to sustainability, the product incorporates recycled plastics in its exterior and comes in eco-friendly packaging.

A Display That Runs Without a Continuous Power Supply

The secret behind the Color E-Paper’s ultra-low power consumption is its distinctive method of displaying images.

“While conventional LCD signage uses a backlight to illuminate images, the Color E-Paper arranges six colors of digital ink in precise locations — just like printing on paper,” said Ahn, who participated in developing the product’s image enhancement technology. “This is also what gives the display its eye-friendly visual texture.”

The display consists of millions of microcups, each containing four colored ink particles (red, yellow, white and blue). When an electrical signal is applied to each cup, the designated ink particles rise to the surface to produce six colors.

“This process closely resembles the printing principle by which ink adheres to paper,” Ahn explained. “Once an image is formed, it can be semi-permanently retained without any further power consumption.”

Rich Images With Just Six Colors Through Samsung’s Proprietary Technology

The Color E-Paper’s strengths go far beyond power efficiency. The product can reproduce vibrant, natural hues using only six colors thanks to Samsung Electronics’ independently developed Color Imaging Algorithm.

“Conventional products had limitations in accurately reproducing input colors, and issues such as distortion and noise occurred . A solution was needed to overcome these challenges, so the VD Business and Samsung Research joined forces to come up with one,” said Ahn.

The starting point for developing the Color Imaging Algorithm, which enhances both color expressiveness and visibility, was the Human Visual System (HVS). The algorithm was built around a key aspect of human vision: the eye perceives the average color across a certain region, rather than focusing on the colors of individual pixels.

“By leveraging this trait, it’s possible to create the perception of different colors by naturally combining the six colors. The key lies in optimizing the ratio and arrangement of those combinations to avoid any color distortion,” Ahn added.

Calculating Color Ratios: Probability Map Extraction

Conventional e‑paper relies on error-diffusion[2]techniques to approximate digital images using a limited color palette. While effective, these methods carry significant drawbacks, as they are prone to visual distortion and suffer from slow computation speeds.

 

To overcome these limitations, Samsung devised an innovative approach that calculates the probability of placing certain colors within arbitrary regions, allowing for more precise color expression.

By computing color weights as probabilities, the Color E-Paper can render nearly 2.5 million distinct hues using just six colors — a dramatic 40-fold increase in color richness compared to the roughly 60,000 hues achievable with conventional methods.

 

Optimizing Color Arrangement: Color Sampling

Along with color ratios, the way colors are arranged also plays a critical role in color rendition quality. Building on the probability map, Samsung developers applied blue-noise-based[3] sampling (arrangement) to assign colors on a pixel-by-pixel basis, ensuring uniform and smooth color rendering.

This advanced Color Imaging Algorithm technology significantly reduces eye strain and delivers images with soft, natural boundaries — just like printed material.

A Globally Acclaimed Technology With a Bright Future

With reactions like “I thought it was real paper!” and “Where’s the power cable?”, people are often surprised or impressed when they see the Color E‑Paper for the first time. The innovation drew significant attention at this year’s edition of Europe’s largest display exhibition, Integrated Systems Europe, where it won three Best of Show at ISE 2025 awards.

“I felt so proud when I heard that a global brand, one that had previously insisted on analog signage only, began seriously considering a digital transformation after seeing the Color E‑Paper at ISE 2025,” Daewoong Cho recalled.

“The natural, paper-like color of the Color E-Paper will offer consumers a fresh experience across various commercial settings. We plan to introduce it in a range of sizes, from small to large displays.”

Launched at ISE 2025, the energy-efficient Samsung Color E-Paper (EMDX model) stunned visitors with its vibrant digital ink technology and slim, lightweight design. This innovative signage solution is ideal for locations where content remains the same for a week or longer — such as retail or grocery stores and outdoor spaces such as bus stops. The display uses 0.00W[1] of power when showing a static image and can easily be managed through a dedicated app[2] or with Samsung VXT (Visual eXperience Transformation), a cloud-based content management solution (CMS) platform.

HoloDisplay: Bringing Signage to Life With 3D Innovation

In the United States, NASCAR`s new remote race control room now utilizes The Wall enhanced race officiating. Officials can review comprehensive, real-time video, audio and data from the track and remotely oversee races on an impressive 32-foot-wide, 9-foot-tall screen.

The Wall for Virtual Production:  A Seamless, Cost-Effective LED Stage Solution for Filmmakers

Samsung hosted a live demonstration at Samsung Corporate Broadcast Studio inside the ISE 2025 venue to showcase the seamless integration of The Wall for Virtual Production (IVC model) with Arnold & Richter Cine Technik (ARRI) cameras and lighting fixtures as well as Realtime Department’s digital experience solution. The combination of these technologies created ready-to-shoot LED backgrounds for virtual production — ensuring exceptional image quality and ease of use for corporate, broadcast and media environments.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced its next generation of commercial displays that feature AI-powered solutions at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2025.

The Samsung Color E-Paper delivers new levels of energy efficiency, while the AI features in SmartThings Pro and the Interactive Display increase the intelligence, control and usability of business-focused screens. In addition, the supersized 115” Smart Signage screen brings a new level of immersive visuals to life. All of these innovative solutions are being displayed at ISE, in booth 3F500.

Samsung Color E-Paper Brings Greater Energy Efficiency and Flexibility

Samsung Color E-Paper (EMDX model) redefines energy-efficient digital signage by combining digital ink with innovative full-color e-paper technology. This ultra-low power, lightweight and slim display serves as an eco-conscious alternative to traditional analog and paper-based promotional materials while delivering the high visibility and functionality that businesses demand.

Leveraging advanced digital ink technology, the EMDX operates at 0.00W power when displaying static images, while consuming significantly less energy during image transitions compared to traditional digital signage, resulting in substantial cost savings.[1] The ultra-slim and lightweight design ensures effortless installation, while the range of sizes — 13″ (1,600 x 1,200); 25″ (3,200 x 1,800); 32″ QHD (2,560 x 1,440); and an outdoor version that is 75″ 5K (5,120 x 2,880) — are optimized to cater to diverse business needs. The Color E-Paper also includes a rechargeable 5000mAh battery, two USB-C ports for charging and data transfer, 8GB of memory, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support for enhanced connectivity.

For seamless device management, a dedicated mobile app[2] allows users to remotely operate displays, schedule wake-up and sleep times, and even set playlists with predefined intervals. Samsung VXT (Visual eXperience Transformation) further simplifies content operation with a feature exclusive to the Samsung Color E-Paper. A specialized algorithm optimizes content visibility for the display and includes a preview function to ensure content and color are accurate before deployment.

Content management is made simple through the mobile app and Samsung VXT, with businesses also able to use their own solutions through Tizen Enterprise APIs, which enable easy integration with existing management systems.

Moreover, as part of Samsung’s ongoing commitment to a sustainable future, the cover of the Color E-Paper is made from over 50% recycled plastics, while its packaging is made entirely from paper.

AI Features Bring New Intelligence and Control to SmartThings Pro and Interactive Display

In 2025, SmartThings Pro, Samsung’s hyper-connected business-to-business (B2B) management platform, brings enhanced AI and automation capabilities to improve operational efficiency.[3]

The platform offers Interactive View, which uses AI to convert 2D floor plans into 3D images of business premises. This 3D visualization makes it easier to understand and navigate spaces intuitively, enabling business operators to manage connected devices with ease.

SmartThings Pro also features advanced automation controls, allowing businesses to adjust settings — such as power, volume and brightness — based on pre-set conditions like ambient lighting, room occupancy and store operating hours. These automated adjustments save time while ensuring devices are optimized for their environments. When using SmartThings Pro on displays, switching between content streams is equally seamless. This is because users are able to effortlessly change channels or input sources for a streamlined experience.[4]

Additionally, Samsung Smart Signage features CryptoCore, a FIPS 140-3-certified encryption module that safeguards sensitive authentication data for IoT connections and ensures that these connections between devices remain secure.[5]

At ISE, Samsung is also showcasing the 2025 Interactive Display (WAFX-P model), powered by Android OS 15 and featuring new AI capabilities that enhance education and collaboration opportunities.

The WAFX-P model provides AI capabilities, featuring Circle to Search, which enables users to easily search for images or translate text directly on-screen, and AI Summary, which automatically generates concise recaps of lectures or meetings.

Supersized 4K Smart Signage Redefines Immersion

Samsung’s 115” 4K Smart Signage (QHFX model) leads the industry in advancing supersized displays, offering businesses bold new ways to captivate audiences and transform environments with immersive visuals.

Building on the success of last year’s 105” QPDX-5K model, which features a 21:9 aspect ratio optimized for video conferencing, the 115” QHFX delivers greater versatility with its 16:9 aspect ratio, and its multi-view functionality — which supports up to four split windows — makes it ideal for simultaneously showcasing multiple content streams. This adaptability makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from meeting rooms to luxurious retail stores requiring premium, large-scale displays.

The QHFX also eliminates visible borders commonly associated with traditional video walls, creating an uninterrupted display that engages viewers and enhances any environment. Featuring QLED 4K resolution, 700 nits of maximum brightness and Tizen OS 8.0, it ensures vibrant visuals and smooth performance. The QHFX integrates seamlessly with SmartThings Pro and Samsung VXT, while additional user-friendly features — like a built-in handle for easy installation and VESA[6] compatibility — provide businesses with flexibility and convenience.
