As smartphones become an increasingly essential tool of everyday life, the ringtone, too, has made a presence in today’s modern world. “Over the Horizon” is perhaps one of the most recognizable ringtones, as it has been the default ringtone of Galaxy devices since 2011. It is so recognizable, in fact, that when heard from a distance, you might even wonder if it’s coming from your own device.

Each year, with each new generation of Galaxy devices, “Over the Horizon” is rearranged to mirror the aesthetic transformation of the devices themselves. For 2018, Samsung reached out to Icelandic composer Pétur Jónsson to reimagine the melody.

Delicately layering instruments, Jónsson’s minimalist arrangement takes you away on an atmospheric journey of discovery. The piece begins with the soft tones of a single piano playing the refrain. As additional instruments are gradually introduced, the sound rises to a crescendo before melting away. As the video cuts away from the opening scene of Jónsson at the piano, it prompts you to imagine travelling over the remote Icelandic countryside. Capturing the beauty of Nordic nature, the camera pans over misty mountains and jagged cliffs, steaming geysers and snow-blanketed hills.

Listening to this year’s piece by Jónsson, you will find that the notes arouse the most pure, fundamental elements of the human sentiment that often remain hidden in our daily lives. In this way, the latest version of Samsung’s brand sound has the power to relax the mind and heal the soul, thus resonating with all who hear it, regardless of their age.

Samsung commemorates 60th Merdeka through “Negaraku” that celebrates diversity

31st August 1957 marked the day of our country’s greatest pride. That day, then Prime Minister and architect of nationhood Tunku Abdul Rahman stood spiritedly on the podium amidst a sea of people and ushered in a new era. The words “Merdeka” rang through Stadium Merdeka followed by the national anthem “Negaraku”. That historic moment, documented in the history books, would forever be etched in our grandparents’ memories. For the younger generations, the image of Merdeka is a reminder of our heritage and humble beginnings as a free nation.

In conjunction with Malaysia’s 60th Merdeka celebration, Samsung Malaysia Electronics is showing its support by reminding the Rakyat on what diversity truly means and the inspiration it holds when a nation comes together. Malaysia is a melting pot of culture, reflected in the beautifully diverse people and iconic landmarks which give rise to the infinite experiences that unites us. What better way to commemorate this very meaningful celebration than to serenade the nation with the sweet sounds of our beloved anthem, “Negaraku”?

As part of the celebration, Samsung is embarking on a Merdeka campaign that pays tribute to the people that made this country glorious in a form of a music video featuring the latest rendition of “Negaraku”. This national anthem is a symbol that represents the nation’s pride and performs as an anchor that holds its colourful citizens together. It is a reminder that through our differences, we are stronger when we stand together – united through a progressive and compatible mindset.

Through this campaign, Samsung aims to strike a chord in the hearts of Malaysians on the harmony and unity we have built with one another since 1957. Taken purely with its flagship device the Samsung Galaxy S8, the music video cleverly uses the phone’s unique multi-task function to feature the unity of different Malaysian faces belting out the familiar lyrics of the anthem. The music video also takes the viewers on a journey to appreciate the diverse cultures and assorted beauty that Malaysia holds.

“At Samsung, we are dedicated to inspire Malaysians to discover the wealth of possibilities driven by innovation that gives people new experiences, productivity and creativity. We understand that every consumer has a distinct culture that affects the use of technology. And it is this cultural awareness that led us to develop this video and encourage the celebration of infinite diversity in our country,” said Ms. Elaine Soh, Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

In the spirit of Merdeka and diversity, Samsung is also encouraging Malaysians nationwide to be part of this campaign. The brand will be creating a Merdeka edition and is calling for the Rakyat to be part of this passion project. For a chance to be featured on the Merdeka Day “Negaraku” music video, simply upload your self-portrait with the hashtag #UnboxMalaysia on your Facebook or Instagram account. The portraits will be selected and featured in Samsung’s next music video to be aired on 31st August.

As our nation continues to grow and develop, let us never lose sight or track of the diversity we represent. Our unique hospitality and open tolerance to others have become a hallmark of our identity. Our spirit of unity will never falter and may our beloved nation prosper from strength to strength towards building a better and brighter future.
