In this Q+A, Carl Nordenberg, who leads the Mobile eXperience business unit in Samsung Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO), discusses how Samsung is driving the AI wave, what Galaxy AI is all about, and how the latest Galaxy S25 series mobile phones are helping to shape a future where AI enhances human connection rather than replaces it.

Q1: How do you see smartphones evolving in the ongoing AI revolution?

It is safe to say that generative AI is becoming the transformative technological development of our time. At Samsung, we believe smartphones will empower this AI revolution as the main way that people experience this powerful technology.

Since launching the Galaxy S24 series last year, Samsung has led the way in creating powerful smartphones with seamless AI integration. One year on, I am glad to say that we have reached a point where AI is no longer a futuristic technology, but something that is built into the devices that we use every day.

And we are just beginning to see AI’s true potential! Devices like the Galaxy S25 series will continue to transform how we interact with technology, whether in our creative work or daily communications. Which is why we are dedicated to bringing Galaxy AI to as many users as possible worldwide.

Q2: What are consumers looking for in a smartphone today, and how is that changing with AI?

Our Customer and Marketing Insights team recently conducted a survey[1], which revealed what matters most to users across Southeast Asia and Oceania:

2. Integrated AI capabilities
3. Improved durability
4. Long-lasting battery
5. High-performance processing for AI and gaming.

This highlights an important shift in consumer expectations — just 18 months ago, AI would not have been a consideration for smartphone users, and now it is a top priority. The key word here is “integration” – consumers expect that AI will not be an entirely new, independent thing, but an enhancement of how they already use their mobile devices. And as the technology evolves, people will expect their smartphones to act as intelligent assistants that understand and adapt to their needs as individuals – in an integrated and personalized way.

This type of insight helps to guide our development efforts, as we continue exploring AI’s potential to create more meaningful experiences for Samsung users.

Q3: What does “personalization” mean in the context of mobile AI?

In a region like SEAO with its melting pot of diverse cultures, a one-size-fits-all approach simply will not work. In this context, technologies like generative AI present a powerful opportunity for us to deliver more personalized and meaningful experiences to Samsung users. That is why personalization and integration are the cornerstones of Galaxy AI, and for the Galaxy S25 series. The way we see it, true AI personalization means that technology learns from your unique patterns and preferences to deliver experiences tailored specifically to you.

Take for instance, the Now Brief[2] feature on the new Galaxy S25 series. Now Brief acts like an information hub that delivers tailored updates and information to you throughout the day, accessible either through the dedicated Now Brief home screen widget, or via the Now Bar. Tapping on the Morning Brief button first thing in the morning can deliver the weather forecast, traffic information, and your calendar for the day, for example.

As you continue using this feature, your phone learns from your behavior and personalizes the information it shows you. Over time, these suggestions become more relevant to your specific preferences and interests. For example, showing you news summaries from your most-read sources or reminding you of your friend’s birthday.

The real breakthrough comes when AI understands not just what you do, but the context around it. Through features like Writing Assist, Galaxy AI is able to recognize the context of what is displayed on your screen such as emails and messages to summarize content for you without the need to switch between applications.

Q4: You mentioned that camera features are a top priority for consumers. How is AI enhancing photography, and is it changing the photo taking experience for them?

Most of us primarily use our smartphones for getting information, for creating memories or for connecting with others. This is especially true when it comes to the smartphone camera, which is particularly important to customers in Southeast Asia and Oceania.

What’s fascinating is how Galaxy AI enhances photography in ways that feel naturally integrated with existing behaviors. We have designed AI camera features that do not change the familiar photo-taking experience itself but dramatically improve the end results. Take features like Object Eraser, Best Face, and Audio Eraser — these are AI-enabled innovations that do not interfere with how you capture the moment, but they give you unprecedented control over the final image or video simply from your fingertips.

For instance, the ProVisual Engine in the Galaxy S25 series works with the device’s first 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera to capture stunning landscapes and group shots with remarkable detail. Then AI steps in afterward to let you make your photo or video even better – by removing photo-bombers, by eliminating background noise from your videos, or by selecting the best face of each individual in group photos, to ensure everyone is looking their best.

This approach enables people to create photos and videos exactly as they want them, preserving the moment as they remember it, without overly complicating or interfering with the photo-taking experience itself. That is the power of thoughtfully integrated AI – it enhances our capabilities and provides better experiences – all while not getting in the way!

Q5: How are you balancing personalization with privacy concerns?

This is the most critical question in the AI era. Personalization requires data, but users rightfully demand control over their personal information. We believe that advanced AI and strong privacy protection must evolve together — they are two sides of the same coin.

Our approach to AI in this context is rooted in both transparency and control. People should always understand how their data is being used and have granular control over what information AI systems can access. This builds trust, which is essential for wider AI adoption.

As such, we want to give users the flexibility to personalize their privacy and security settings, exactly according to their preferences. Users can decide which Galaxy AI feature to operate on their device, with the choice to opt out of cloud-based processing[3].

The new Galaxy S25 series features a Personal Data Engine[4], which safely analyzes your data on-device to deliver highly tailored experiences that reflect your preferences and usage patterns. Ensuring privacy and mobile security remains a key focus for all of us at Samsung in this AI-driven era, as users have the right to understand how their data is being used and to control the level of AI intervention in their digital lives.

At Samsung we recognize that there is no privacy without security, and our defense-grade Samsung Knox security platform[5] is built to protect users’ personal data. With Galaxy S25 series, we have introduced the Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) based protection to Knox Matrix, providing quantum-safe protection to users’ cloud backup and sync data.

Simply put, today’s encryption technologies work well against current computers, but quantum computers will eventually be powerful enough to break through these security measures. Instead of waiting for that to happen, Samsung developed PQC to ensure that your data is protected not just today, but well into the future. Our goal is always to ahead of potential security threats, instead of scrambling to react after they emerge.

Q6: Looking ahead, how do you see mobile AI evolving over the next few years?

We are just beginning to scratch the surface of what is possible. We are already seeing AI becoming more “multimodal”; capable of processing and connecting information across different formats like text, images, voice, and sensor data.

Most importantly, AI will become more democratized. Advanced capabilities that once required specialized knowledge or expensive hardware will become accessible to everyone through their smartphones. This democratization of AI has the potential to level playing fields and empower people in unprecedented ways.

Six ProVisual Engine Features That Help You Capture Life as It Happens

Motion Photo – With the Galaxy S24 series’ new Motion Photo capabilities, Team Samsung Galaxy b-boy extraordinaire Kid Karam’s signature breaking style can be captured in all its dynamic detail without missing a single movement. By recording the preview for up to three seconds, Motion Photo captures a short span of motion in action and compiles it into a single moving image. [1]

In the Editor app, you can select any given frame from your Motion Photo to save as a standalone image. Thanks to automatic AI upscaling, the selected frame can be saved as a high-resolution image made up of 12MP for richer detail. Motion Photo also provides Super High Dynamic Range (HDR) capabilities, offering crystal-clear photos even when capturing in a backlit environment.

Finally, from the Gallery app, you can compress your whole three-second Motion Photo together to create a single Long Exposure image. This lets you capture, for example, the spectacular movement and color of an overhead firework display all in one photo. You can also apply other effects, such as Single Take via the Enhance-X app.

Faster Shot-to-Shot Shutter Speed – With a 30% boost in shot-to-shot shutter speed compared to the previous series, the Galaxy S24 series’ camera can take more photos within a shorter time span. This lets you take crystal-clear photos in rapid succession without having to slow down while images process. The next time you’re capturing your dog at the park, faster shots will let you capture every precious moment without missing it.

Instant Slow-mo – For those moments that are begging to be savored – like your daughter scoring the winning goal at a soccer match or your uncle busting his moves on the wedding reception dance floor – Instant Slow-mo has you covered, requiring no prior setup for the capturing process. Through intelligent AI Frame Rate Conversion (AI FRC) technology, the Galaxy S24 series can transform HD 24fps to UHD 60fps videos into slow-mo epics. FHD 240fps to UHD 120fps slow-mo videos can go further still with super slow motion. By generating new intermediate frames of movement based on the video that is already there, Instant Slow-mo achieves silky-smooth, highly detailed replays every time. Starting in late March, Instant Slow-mo will expand to support 480×480 24fps videos, allowing users to create social media-friendly video content with ease.

To achieve these slow-mo effects, the Galaxy S24 series uses powerful AI Frame Rate Conversion (FRC) technology:

• First, AI FRC takes every two frames from the video as it was originally recorded and uses a deep learning model to analyze and extract motion information.
• Extracting this information establishes the differences between frames and helps AI FRC interpolate intermediate frames that give the video slower motion.
• This process is carried out twice – in both square dimension and reverse dimension – to boost the accuracy of the new, additional frames that have been generated.
• Then, two fusion processes are carried out: Fusion Map and Residual. Fusion Map detects and extracts 2D outlines to help detect motion differences between frames, while Residual adds extra corrections and post-edits to minute details for enhanced accuracy. This allows the feature to create accurate intermediate frames extremely quickly.
• When this is completed, the outputs of these two processes are fused one last time to render the final, AI-generated intermediate frames that give the video both fluid slow motion and meticulous detail.

Dual Recording – There are times when your reaction to a moment is just as priceless as the moment itself. With Dual Recording, you can record simultaneously with both the front and the rear camera so that your loved ones can see not only how amazing the view from the mountain peak was, but how ecstatic you were to finally reach it.

Upgraded from the previous Director Mode feature, Dual Recording now even lets you record with two rear cameras at the same time – Ultra Wide with 3x, for example – with Full HD resolution supported on Galaxy S24 and S24+ and Full HD and Ultra HD supported on S24 Ultra. With Preview Snap, you can extract a snapshot image from your recording at any time, while dedicated Image Signal Processor (ISP) Block and enhanced ISP capabilities support improved video noise and brightness.

10 ND Filter Types – Natural Density (ND) filters are often attached to professional-grade cameras to help do things like limit light, reduce noise or lengthen exposure. No such attachments are required, with 10 different ND filters built into the Galaxy 24 series’ camera for maximum user choice and control.  ND-filtered photos synthesize multiple frames at once and analyze object movement to create one still image with a clear sense of living motion in, for example, photographs of waves or waterfalls.

Single Take – Galaxy’s Single Take function lets you capture a range of image types with just a tap – up to 8 in total based on one shot. This means if you want to sneak a quick shot of your friend opening the birthday gift you got them, you don’t need to waste time deliberating over the best camera mode in advance.

AI also enhances Single Take’s pose and skeleton detection capabilities. Previously finetuned to analyze human motion, skeleton detection can now recognize pets too, tracking their poses and rapid movements in real time for the best photos, videos and collages of your leaping canines and lounging cats. If a human subject is jumping through the air, for example, skeleton detection identifies when the subject is at their highest point and presents that frame as the best image for the user. When applied to your pet, it analyzes your pet’s poses to capture the moment best showing off their facial features.

[1] In cases where the environment has insufficient light, Motion Photo may be automatically disabled and Night Mode will be activated instead. By tapping the moon symbol at the bottom of the display, the user can turn off Night Mode and revert to Motion Photo again.

Compared to the previous model, its sensor has nearly doubled in size from 12.52 square millimeters to approximately 24.47 square millimeters, helping Galaxy S24 Ultra capture details with even more precision. It also has bigger pixels — nearly 60% larger and measuring 1.4μm on each side of the pixel at 5x zoom.[1] Combined with enhanced AI ISP, this means the Galaxy S24 Ultra can capture more light and create brighter, less noisy images. What’s more, the photo shutter speed is 30% faster and the telephoto camera’s optical image stabilization angle is wider. This is where Generative Edit takes the stage, harnessing generative AI to adjust objects and generate a perfectly blended background in their place. Generative AI enables edits such as straightening and resizing, then harnesses in-painting and out-painting techniques to fill any gaps in the image. AI then determines the suitability of the results and handles any necessary post-processing.
