Samsung Electronics, the Official Art TV of Art Basel, today announced the launch of the Art Basel in Basel (ABB) Collection, an exclusive curation of digital art available across Samsung TVs with Samsung Art Store[1]. Representing the most extensive Art Basel collection to date, the ABB Collection introduces 38 curated works from globally renowned artists and galleries—marking a new milestone in Samsung and Art Basel’s mission to bring world-class art to a wider audience.

The ABB Collection stands apart for its emphasis on diversity, with works that span continents, mediums, and voices. For the first time, the collection features representation from an Africa-based gallery, deepening the global reach and cultural richness of the Samsung x Art Basel initiative. Some of this collection will be displayed at the Art Basel, from June 19-22, at Messe Basel in Switzerland[2].

A Curated Vision of Global Expression

With the many streaming services, gaming platforms, and digital content available at our fingertips, the living room has evolved from just another space in the house, to a central hub where families gather, entertain, and connect.

The television sits at the heart of this change, with consumers across Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) looking for an all-in-one screen that can truly do justice to the wealth of content available. Their expectations include remarkable picture quality, durability, and innovative features that bring stories to life with amazing clarity.

Our Samsung SEAO TV Awareness IFC Study revealed that picture quality and display technology remain the most important factor for consumers in this region when purchasing a TV, as awareness of TV technologies like QLED, OLED, Neo QLED and 8K has been steadily increasing. Interestingly, consumers’ awareness of QLED technology is now on par with OLED, and QLED and OLED TVs are also the ones that consumers are most likely to consider as compared with other display technologies.

An authentic QLED display revolution

In a market flooded with technical jargon and similar-sounding features, authenticity has become a critical but often overlooked factor. Not all display technologies are made equal, and the consumer viewing experience can be greatly impacted by the distinction between marketing jargon, and technological innovation.

This is particularly true for QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode) technology. True quantum dot displays such as Samsung’s latest QLED TVs which received ‘Real Quantum Dot Display’ certification TÜV Rheinland[1] meet global standards for quantum dot display structure, using quantum dots which are incredibly fine semiconductor particles to deliver better color accuracy, brightness, and viewing angles.

When properly implemented in displays, these remarkable particles produce a color gamut that closely matches colors perceived by the human eye, delivering uniform luminance and consistent color from any viewing angle while minimizing blue light exposure.

The quantum dot (QD) sheet used in its QD TVs has been verified to contain no cadmium by the global certification institute, Société Générale, a world-leading testing and certification body.
Read here for more information.

At Samsung, for a display to truly qualify as an authentic QLED technology, it must meet specific requirements:

First, it requires a genuine quantum dot film. Samsung’s QLED TVs contain quantum dot sheet technology that stably controls these delicate particles and allows light made by quantum dots to spread uniformly throughout the screen. This enables our QLED TVs to emit brighter whites, deeper blacks, and an exceptional color range overall.

Second, it needs sufficient quantum dot content. Our QLED TVs contain a large amount of actual quantum dot material, exceeding the minimum threshold required to deliver meaningful performance benefits.

Third, it must be cadmium-free, enabling a safe viewing environment without harmful substances for consumers. Recognizing the environmental and health risks of cadmium, Samsung pioneered and succeeded in developing the world’s first commercially available cadmium-free quantum dot material in 2014[2]. Today, every Samsung QLED TV is certified cadmium-free by the Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) and complies with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, underscoring our ongoing commitment to environmental safety.

Going from feature laundry list to meaningful innovation

Picture quality is frequently a focus of discussions around display technology, and our research reveals that priorities are becoming more pronounced with SEAO consumers increasingly valuing innovations that provide the best quality and value, as well as how long their investments last.

This change in consumer thinking mirrors our own innovation philosophy at Samsung; rather than pursuing a feature list that looks impressive on paper, we’ve deliberately focused on meaningful innovations that address genuine consumer needs. We’ve also observed OLED and QLED buyers becoming more interested in durability as a key differentiator. This makes perfect sense, as they are investing in experiences they expect to enjoy for years.

Similarly, when we introduced Samsung Knox security architecture for our televisions, some questioned whether consumers would care about security features in their displays. We recognized early that as homes become increasingly connected, robust protection would become essential, and not just another box to check. Today, multi-layered protection now safeguards everything from one’s personal viewing data, to communication between the various smart devices in your home.

Our upcoming Vision AI technology represents this same commitment to meaningful innovation. Rather than developing AI features because the technology is available, we’ve designed Vision AI to transform televisions from passive viewing devices into interactive, intelligent partners that genuinely enhance the viewing experience. On-device AI optimizes picture and sound quality in real-time, while practical features like “AI Customization Mode”, which automatically detects the content genre and adjusts settings to suit user preferences, add utility that our consumers value. This is reflected in our 2024 survey highlighting smart features and functions as a key consideration for what consumers value the most when choosing a TV. Furthermore, by integrating with SmartThings, we are ensuring our TVs serve as true smart home hubs—not just screens with disconnected smart features. This integration transforms the humble TV from an isolated device into the centre of a cohesive ecosystem.

Vision AI isn’t about adding another bullet point to our marketing materials, but about technology that does more for the customer in ways that genuinely matter, rather than overwhelming them with features they’ll never use.

Our commitment to deliver an authentic viewing experience

As I look ahead to the next decade of display innovation, I’m convinced that quality and authenticity will matter more than ever, not just in terms of technical specifications, but also in delivering on the promises we make to consumers. We appreciate that Samsung is top of mind when they think of QLED technology, but we remain focused on delivering an authentic viewing experience that respects both consumer expectations and safety.

Ultimately, what happens behind the screen matters just as much as what you see on it. Though I am proud of our team’s efforts that have led us to maintain leadership in the global TV market, we continue to measure our success on whether the technology in your home delivers the experience you expect, safely and consistently, year after year.

Quantum dots have attracted attention as next-generation material for a wide range of applications including displays, medical devices and solar cells. In 2014, Samsung Electronics developed the no-cadmium quantum dot material and successfully commercialized quantum dot technology with its SUHD TVs. Since 2017, the company has continued to build on its legacy of quantum dot mastery through QLED — its own quantum dot TV series. Samsung Newsroom explored how quantum dots are taking Samsung displays to the next level.

Quantum Dots: The Next Generation of Display Innovation

Quantum dots are ultra-fine semiconductor particles that are tens of thousands of times thinner than a human hair. Since inception, their physical characteristics that allow them to provide the highest level of color accuracy and brightness among existing materials had them positioned to revolutionize display technology.

When used in displays, quantum dots support a wide color gamut that closely matches colors perceived by the human eye and facilitate pixel-level light adjustment for more accurate black levels. Emitting light in all directions, quantum dots deliver uniform luminance and consistent color from any viewing angle while minimizing blue light exposure for a more comfortable viewing experience.

▲ SUHD TVs at CES 2015

What Sets Quantum Dot TVs Apart: Content, Film Quality and N-Cadmium Technology

The TV industry continues research and development into the commercialization of quantum dots as the material becomes a game-changer in display technology. For that reason, a variety of quantum dot TVs have hit the market recently — offering a wide range of options to customers.

However, key differences in quantum dot TVs lie in how the technology is implemented and the overall quality of the display. To ensure a premium viewing experience, factors such as the amount of quantum dot content, the quality of quantum dot film and the use of no-cadmium materials must be considered.

▲ Factors to consider when selecting a high-quality quantum dot TV

Quantum Dot Content

The true quality of a quantum dot TV is defined by its quantum dot content. The quantum dot film requires a minimum of 3,000 parts per million (ppm) of the material to achieve the vivid, rich picture quality and color expression that only quantum dots can deliver.

Quantum Dot Film

Samsung QLEDs eliminate the need for a phosphor layer, enhancing light and energy efficiency while delivering more vivid colors. A quantum dot OLED (QD-OLED), which consists of a thin-film transistor (TFT) layer,[1] a self-emitting light source and a quantum dot film that uses the light emitted from the light source, takes a step further enhancing picture quality. In either case, a dedicated quantum dot film that contains sufficient quantum dots is key in delivering top-class picture quality and longevity.

▲ A comparison of QD-OLED and LCD displays

No Cadmium

In the early stages of developing quantum dot TVs, cadmium was essential to achieving the key benefits of quantum dots such as color reproduction and contrast ratio. At the time, cadmium was considered the most efficient material for producing quantum dots.

However, cadmium’s toxicity became a significant obstacle to the commercialization of quantum dot technology. The element posed serious threats to the environment — making its widespread use difficult despite being the most suitable material for implementing quantum dot technology.

In response to this challenge, Samsung developed the no-cadmium quantum dot material in 2014 and successfully commercialized quantum dot technology with its SUHD TVs in the following year to open a new era of quantum dot TVs.

10 Years of Quantum Dot Innovation and Leadership

Samsung has quickly recognized the potential of quantum dot technology and led innovation in the global display market over the past decade through continuous research and investment.

▲ A timeline of Samsung’s quantum dot technology development from 2001 to 2022

Samsung began researching and developing quantum dot technology in 2001 — at a time when there was limited research on non-cadmium materials. Achieving vivid colors required making the nano-sized particles uniform, but the lack of technology and research made mass production extremely challenging.

Despite these obstacles, Samsung succeeded in creating a no-cadmium nanocrystal material in 2014. Since then, the company has accumulated extensive expertise — registering more than 150 patents — and continuously worked on advancing the technology. Samsung’s long-standing commitment culminated in 2015 when the company unveiled their first SUHD TVs with no-cadmium quantum dot technology.

▲ QLED TVs (75Q8C and 88Q8F) at Samsung’s First Look 2017 event during CES 2017

Samsung’s QLED lineup was revealed in 2017, setting a new standard for premium TVs that overcame the limitations of OLED TVs. By applying metal quantum dot technology, Samsung achieved the Digital Cinema Initiative’s color standard DCI-P3 and achieved 100% color volume for the first time in the world — thereby presenting unparalleled color expression. Notably, the use of inorganic quantum dot technology protected the screens from burn-in[2] to ensure consistent picture quality over time.

“Discovering a blue material for self-emitting QLEDs and demonstrating industry-leading performance at the device level were significant achievements of this research,” said Dr. Eunjoo Chang, a fellow at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. “Samsung’s distinctive quantum dot technology has once again overcome technical barriers.”

These cutting-edge advancements led to the launch of the QD-OLED TVs, making history at CES 2022 by winning the Best of Innovation award for integrating quantum dot technology and OLED displays.

Samsung remains dedicated to advancing quantum dot technology through continuous innovation. The company continues to invest in leading display technology — from QLED to Neo OLED — by offering high brightness, color accuracy and frequency. Driven by Samsung’s unrivaled quantum dot innovations, the future of display technology is brighter than ever.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today released findings from its annual TV Awareness Study, which reveals that TVs are now the entertainment hub of the home, driven by the increasing popularity of big screen TVs fast becoming the new normal, with quality and product specifications topping the list as the most important factors influencing TV purchases.

The study was conducted as part of Samsung’s efforts to better understand consumers in the region and their needs pertaining to TV Screen technologies. Over 1,920 consumers aged 25 to 64 across eight markets in the Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) region were surveyed in the third quarter of 2023[1].

Yohan Zondak, Head of Visual Display for Samsung Southeast Asia & Oceania, said, “As we look towards the future of entertainment in the home, the findings from our latest annual TV Awareness Study reaffirms our views that consumers are passionate about the content that they want to view, and importantly, ensuring that they have a high-quality and premium viewing experience. As a pioneer and industry leader in the TV industry, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation and to transform the way people consume content, as well as to provide our customers with the best TV experiences in the years to come.”

Big Screen TVs are the New Normal

Across the region, while consumers were generally satisfied with their TVs, large screens were more popular than ever with consumers, with 30% of consumers owning TVs of 53” sizes and above. In particular, big screen sizes such as 98” are becoming the new norm, as survey results show purchases of even larger TVs of 60” and above has grown more than 10% as compared to the previous year. At the same time, a whopping 55% of consumers surveyed indicated their intent to purchase bigger TVs[2] in the future as compared to their current ones[3].

Product specifications such as sound quality and smart features played key roles in driving big screen TV purchases such as those from the Neo QLED 8K range. This shows that while consumers are not shying away from purchasing larger TVs as the centerpiece of their living rooms, screen sizes alone are not the sole driving factor in purchase decisions.

TVs are the Entertainment Hub of the Home

Across the SEAO region, 87% of consumers are proud owners of a Smart TV[4], with growth in smart TV ownership observed from the year before[5].

It is no surprise that TVs are primarily being used as the main tool for consumers to enjoy a cinematic experience of their favorite content, powered by the latest features. The study found that consumers in Malaysia find most value in new TVs that allow them to enjoy high quality content (78%), support all of the latest technology and features (75%), and provide them with the most cinematic and immersive experiences possible (79%)[6].

The 2024 Neo QLED 8K is positioned to reinforce this trend, thanks to the introduction of a next-generation AI processor, the NQ8 AI Gen3, which enables unprecedented performance upgrades in a TV designed to be the ideal centerpiece of the discerning consumer.

A majority of SEAO consumers also use their TVs for activities other than watching entertainment (58%) such as gaming, playing exercise videos and even displaying paintings, images, and videos when the TV is on standby. In fact, 1 in 4 (24%) consumers use their TV for gaming, with 50% of them preferring to play their favorite games on a console[7]. This has been a key focus for Samsung TVs in recent years, with numerous gaming features added such as a more immersive gaming bar, new mini-map auto detection that allows easier control of the mini map during gameplay, AI auto-setting to optimize the picture and sound quality to the type of game being played, and more.

Quality and Product Specifications Take Priority

Despite a challenging economic climate in 2023, the study found that picture and sound quality as well as durability (90%) still ranked ahead of the breadth of product specifications (82%) when it comes to factors influencing the final purchase decision, with price and value (42%) coming up a distant third[8].

Samsung’s premium yet durable QLED 4K TVs are designed with such purposes in mind. Taking consideration of consumer preference for quality and features, Samsung’s latest 2024 TVs and screens will also come with greater compatibility across various devices within the ecosystem, allowing a more integrated connection between TVs and smartphones or wearable devices for a greater level of customization, accessibility, and convenience. Features such as Mobile Smart Connect transforms your smartphone into a multi-functional remote for greater control over your screens, while the 360 Audio feature is now expanded to Samsung TVs and screens, letting users connect Samsung Galaxy Buds to TVs for more immersive audio.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the addition of SeeColors mode on its 2023 TV and monitor lineup[1]. The newly added accessibility feature provides various color settings based on degrees and types of color vision deficiency (CVD)[2], offering an improved viewing experience.

SeeColors mode provides nine picture presets so users can select the option that is most suitable for them. The feature adjusts red, green and blue levels to ensure viewers can easily distinguish colors on the screen depending on their degree or type of CVD.

Originally released as an application in 2017, SeeColors helps those with CVD enjoy their screen as it was meant to be seen. Now, integrated into TV and monitor accessibility menus, this feature is more readily available to users. For consumers who have already purchased a 2023 model, a software update will be available to add SeeColors to the accessibility menu.

Samsung has earned ‘Color Vision Accessibility’ certification from TÜV Rheinlan[3], in acknowledgement of SeeColors mode’s ability to help those with CVD better enjoy content on Samsung screens. This recognition builds on Samsung’s commitment to accessibility under the vision of ‘Screens Everywhere, Screens for All.
