As CES 2025 kicked off in Las Vegas, Samsung’s C-Lab exhibition captured the attention of visitors from around the world. C-Lab, Samsung’s startup incubation program, aims to revitalize Korea’s domestic startup ecosystem while supporting global expansion for startups by showcasing their innovations in its exhibition zones at major events like CES.

The C-Lab exhibition at CES 2025 featured 15 startups and projects, including 12 from C-Lab Outside, Samsung’s program for external startups; two projects from C-Lab Inside, which is an in-house idea incubation program for Samsung employees; and one C-Lab Spin-Off startup, which was founded following its success within C-Lab Inside.

Many of these startups were recognized with CES Innovation Awards from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) for their technological innovation and creativity. Samsung Newsroom met with three CES Innovation Award winners, Pinpoint (smart city technology), Quester (XR technology) and GhostPass (security/fintech technology), at the C-Lab exhibition to learn more about their groundbreaking work.

Samsung’s C-Lab serves as a platform to help regional startups grow as well. In addition to Seoul, C-Lab Outside programs operate in Daegu, Gwangju and Gyeongbuk (Gyeongsan) to nurture and promote outstanding startups.

Quester, which grew through C-Lab Outside Daegu in 2024, showcased its innovative hand-tracking glove technology at CES 2025 — a debut made more special by winning an Innovation Award in the XR Technologies & Accessories category.

▲ A demonstration of how Quester’s hand-tracking glove technology utilizes motion data

Quester’s hand-tracking glove technology precisely identifies and tracks the way a hand moves to implement such movements. To overcome the limitations of existing technologies, which are often sensitive to external factors that limit the usage environment, Quester has adopted an approach called sensor fusion. This approach delivers stable performance by combining the advantages of multiple sensors and will be applied in various fields, including immersive content, robotics and motion capture.

At its booth at CES 2025, Quester focused on demonstrating its technological strengths and development direction through prototypes. These demonstrations allowed Quester to not only test their technology but also attract crucial feedback from potential clients, which the startup plans to incorporate into its research on new functions to satisfy various client needs.

“By researching hand-tracking technology starting with virtual experimental content, we were able to develop an innovative solution with universal applicability,” said Jeongwu Lee, CEO of Quester. “Through the infrastructure of C-Lab Outside Daegu, along with various consulting opportunities and the experience acquired from promoting our technology at domestic technology fairs, we were able to grow further.”

At CES 2025, Quester aims to connect with various industry stakeholders to identify collaboration opportunities and gain insights for enhancing its products.

Samsung continues to support the growth of C-Lab graduates. Even after graduation, these startups benefit from industry partnerships, investments and opportunities for synergies with Samsung, helping them become more competitive in the global market.

GhostPass, part of C-Lab Outside in 2023, showcases its biometric authentication technology at the C-Lab exhibition for the second consecutive year.

GhostPass’ biometric authentication solution is characterized by its two-factor authentication technology. The technology stores biometric information, such as facial and iris data, only on the user’s smartphone rather than on a server or separate device and supports remote authentication from other devices. This increases security and allows users to manage their biometric information directly on their devices. The solution is also expected to help businesses reduce operational costs by eliminating the need for server-based storage.

At CES 2025, GhostPass expanded its application to the fintech sector, demonstrating an unmanned store concept where visitors experienced biometric authentication from entry to payment. “What’s most impressive is the fact that no third party is collecting the biometric data. It’s an innovative solution that I think will have many applications,” said Huseyin Ada, a visitor from Türkiye after trying out the technology.

“As a member of the C-Lab Family, we’ve had the opportunity to participate in global exhibitions and receive valuable feedback from industry stakeholders worldwide,” said Seongwan Lee, CEO of GhostPass. “All of our brochures are gone already! Our booth’s popularity this year is definitely exceeding last year’s. With this momentum, we hope to establish global collaboration partnerships at CES 2025 and achieve tangible results,” he added. “Advice from Samsung employees was instrumental in preparing for the exhibition and showcasing our technology effectively.”

C-Lab Inside: Four Projects From Samsung Employees To Debut

Since 2016, Samsung has been exhibiting its C-Lab Inside projects at Eureka Park, the main exhibition space for startups from around the world at CES. During the exhibition, the marketability and customer response will be gauged to enhance and further advance the startups’ projects. Those that have proven marketability will either transfer to an in-house division of Samsung or become spin-off projects that will be supported by the company.

The four C-Lab Inside projects that will be exhibited are:

Piloto, an AI solution that helps children develop proper smartphone usage habits

PROBA, an AI-based online exam service for administrators, test-takers and supervisors

C-Lab Outside: Nine Startups That Are Ready for the Global Market

Created in October 2018, C-Lab Outside is a startup acceleration program that was launched to invigorate the startup ecosystem in South Korea. Startups enrolled in the C-Lab Outside program are provided with office workspaces, expert mentoring from Samsung employees, participation in global IT exhibitions, and financial and investor relations support.

Five startups that have been incubated directly by Samsung over the past year and four startups from the Daegu Center and the Gyeong-buk Center for Creative Economy & Innovation that are part of C-Lab Outside will also participate in CES 2022. They include:

Petnow, an AI-based pet biometric recognition solution

Digisonic, a 3D immersive audio solution for mobile devices

Verses, an interactive metaverse music app

bitsensing, an array of imaging radar technology solutions for autonomous driving and smart cities

SELECTSTAR, an AI-based data collection and labelling platform

Furthermore, nine startups that have been spun off from C-Lab Inside also plan to set up their own exhibition booths at CES 2022. The spun-off startups that will exhibit include EVAR, Prinker Korea Inc., lululab and Linkface.

C-Lab Startups Recognized as Honorees and Best of Innovation at CES 2022

In November of 2021, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) announced CES 2022 Innovation Awards across 27 product categories, including those recognized as Best of Innovation. Projects from the C-Lab startups received one Best of Innovation award and 21 Innovation Awards Honoree nods for their standout technologies.

Notably, Petnow, which developed an AI-based biometric recognition solution for pets, was named a CES 2022 Best of Innovation award winner in the Software & Mobile Apps category. The Petnow app uses a camera to automatically detect, photograph and register a dog’s nose print, making it easier to find lost dogs.

C-Lab’s other award-winning products and services include: Digisonic, EVAR, lululab, Verses, bitsensing, Linkface, LUPLE, BLUEFEEL, Prinker Korea Inc, etc. The CES 2022 Innovation Award-winning products will be displayed separately at the Venetian Expo in Las Vegas.

“With the support of the C-Lab program, these startups have proven their technological prowess on the global stage, as evidenced by the most Innovation Awards ever at CES,” said Hark Kyu Park, President and Chief Financial Officer at Samsung Electronics. “We hope the startups that had difficulty expanding their businesses due to the pandemic will be able to target the global market more actively, starting with CES 2022.”

Samsung Plans To Have Nurtured 500 Startups by Next Year

Started in December 2012, C-Lab Inside nurtures employees’ innovative ideas while instilling a corporate culture in which creativity is at the fore. The program supports the development of ideas from all areas of the business. Since 2015, Samsung has been supporting successful C-Lab projects that demonstrate great market potential, and facilitating their launch as startups under the C-Lab spin-off policy. Leveraging the success of the C-Lab Inside initiative, C-Lab Outside has been expanding Samsung’s support for new ventures to startups and innovations outside of the Samsung network since 2018.

Started in December 2012, Samsung C-Lab Inside nurtures employees’ innovative ideas while instilling a corporate culture in which creativity is at the fore. Since 2015, Samsung has been supporting C-Lab projects that demonstrate market potential from all areas of the business and facilitating their launch as startups under the C-Lab spin-off policy.

Now, Samsung Electronics has announced that it will support four new startups that have grown out of the company’s C-Lab Inside in-house venture program. Read more about the four new startups below.

Scan & Dive

Startup ‘Scan & Dive’ has developed a device that can analyze and classify different types of fabrics. When it is used to scan clothes, the device can tell the thickness, abrasiveness, and weaving methods used, while also classifying textiles such as cotton, polyester and rayon.

Scan & Dive’s solution can be used to automate clothing classification at laundry facilities and recycling centers and can also be used to help fashion companies inspect fabrics and make purchasing decisions. The device also has the potential to have its use cases expanded to materials such as plastic, metal and others.

Ice Linker

C-Lab spin-off ‘Ice Linker’ has created a smart cooler that automatically manages the temperatures of users that are running a fever. When worn on the head, it measures the patient’s body temperature from both temples and gradually reduces the temperature of the inner cooling plate to cool the user down.

In addition, Ice Linker offers a feature that manages the patient’s condition in real-time and delivers notifications through a smartphone app if their condition worsens. Going forward, the use cases for this device will be expanded so that it can be used by outdoor workers and by those who enjoy playing sports.

Pinot Lab

Startup ‘Pinot Lab’ has established an app that recommends wines to suit users’ tastes. When users take a picture of a wine label, it provides flavor, rating, food pairing, price, and purchase information to help them quickly and easily find a wine that’s right for them.

When users enter their meal of choice into the app, it harnesses AI-based food matching algorithms to recommend a wine to go with their meal. The app can even tell users where they can buy the wines that it recommends!

STRA

‘STRA’, another startup launched through C-Lab, has developed a guitar chord generation app called ‘CODA’ that enables users to view chords and practice playing whatever songs they may choose. When the name of a song is provided, the app’s AI engine extracts the audio data and converts it to guitar chords. The app even helps users learn the correct finger placements.

Looking ahead, STRA is planning to expand the use cases for CODA so that the app can be used with a music platform that helps connect music teachers to people who want to learn to play instruments and provides contactless music lessons.

Other Recently Launched Startups

C-Lab spin-off ‘WELT’, a digital healthcare startup that develops smart belts, has recently raised funding of USD 5.3 million from total healthcare company Handok and two other venture capitals. The startup is planning to work with investors to develop digital therapeutics for alcoholism and insomnia.

‘AIMT’, which develops high-performance vacuum insulation materials, is expanding its business from insulation panels for home appliances to eco-friendly cold chain packaging that is made from recycling PET bottles. Last December, it was selected as a ‘preliminary unicorn special guarantee company’ by the Korean Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and its sales tripled on the previous year to reach USD 14.2 million in 2020.

In addition to the C-Lab spin-off program providing startups with the investment and business consulting they need to grow, Samsung provides a five-year window during which employees who launch startups can return to their jobs if their endeavors prove unsuccessful. As a result, 182 employees have established 52 startups since the inception of the C-Lab program.

Speaking about the program, Vice President and Head of the Creativity & Innovation Center at Samsung Electronics Inkuk Hahn said, “Going forward, we will continue to support promising C-Lab projects and employees with entrepreneurial ambitions to allow them to spin their ventures off from the program and contribute to the startup ecosystem in Korea.”

Four projects from C-Lab Inside and seventeen startups from C-Lab Outside to be

showcased at the world’s biggest technology event

Samsung Electronics today announced that it will be showcasing its C-Lab projects and C-Lab Outside startups at CES 2021 from January 11 through 14. Samsung will unveil four exciting projects in progress from its in-house venture program C-Lab Inside. Seventeen startups supported by the C-Lab Outside, Samsung’s startup acceleration program, will participate in the event as well.

Given the lack of opportunities startups have had in participating in in-person industry exhibitions amid the pandemic in 2020, Samsung is supporting the virtual participation of the startups at this year’s CES to help them attract potential investors and buyers. Also exhibiting at CES for the first time this year are local startups incubated by Samsung in collaboration with Daegu Center for Creative Economy & Innovation and Gyeong-buk Center for Creative Economy & Innovation.

C-Lab Inside: Four projects catering to unique consumer lifestyles to be exhibited

C-Lab Inside, which began in 2012, is an in-house idea incubation program that encourages and nurtures innovative ideas from Samsung employees. This will be the sixth consecutive year C-Lab is participating in CES. The C-Lab Inside projects to be unveiled this year focuses on personalized products and services catering to diverse lifestyles. Product marketability and customer responses will be gauged during the exhibition to enhance and further advance the projects.

The four C-Lab Inside projects are:

EZCal, automated TV picture quality calibration application for cinema-level viewing quality;

Air Pocket, portable oxygen storage device;

Scan&Dive, IoT device & solution for fabric classification and optimal care recommendation;

And Food&Sommelier, a service for finding optimal food & wine pairing.

C-Lab Outside: From AI to healthcare and entertainment, seventeen startups ready for the global market

Five cutting-edge projects from C-Lab Inside and four start-ups from C-Lab Outside to be showcased in Las Vegas

Samsung Electronics announced that it will be showcasing five innovative projects from its C-Lab Inside program as well as products from four start-ups participating in its C-Lab Outside program at CES 2020, the world’s largest consumer electronics exhibition. The C-Lab booth will be located at Eureka Park, Sands Expo, where upcoming start-ups across the globe will be featured from January 7 through 11.

“We will actively support C-Lab to create products that reflect the latest market trends and customer demands and will showcase outstanding projects and startups of C-Lab in various global exhibitions,” said Inkuk Hahn, Vice President and Head of the Creativity & Innovation Center at Samsung Electronics.

From C-Lab Inside Projects to Successful Spin-offs

C-Lab Inside is an in-house idea incubation program that encourages and nurtures innovative ideas from Samsung employees, which began in 2012. This will be the fifth year C-Lab is participating in CES.

The new C-Lab Inside projects being unveiled for the first time at this year’s event are focused on a convenient and healthy lifestyle. They include: SelfieType, a virtual keyboard solution using the front-facing camera; Hyler, a smart highlighter pen that digitizes text printed on paper; Becon, a home care solution for scalp treatment & hair loss prevention; SunnySide, window-shaped artificial sunlight; and Ultra V, an ultraviolet monitoring sensor and service.

Since its inception, a total of 40 Samsung C-Lab alumni projects have launched as fully-fledged start-ups, independent from the company. And eight of these will be showcasing their latest innovations and products at CES 2020 at their own booths, seeking new opportunities to expand their reach. These successful spin-offs include Linkflow, Welt, Linkface, Lululab, Mopic, Monit, AnaloguePlus, and Luple.

Linkface is notable in that it has been named as Innovation Honoree of CES 2020 for its ‘Dear’ headphone with a biosignal sensor to reduce the risk of hearing loss in children. Welt, Lululab and Linkflow also have been honored with industry awards for their respective innovations.

Four Start-ups Accelerated Through C-Lab Outside

Four new start-ups from C-Lab Outside will also be featured alongside projects from C-Lab Inside at CES for the first time.

Created in October 2018, C-Lab Outside began as a startup acceleration program to vitalize the start-up ecosystem and create more IT and technology-driven job opportunities in South Korea. Leveraging the successful experience of C-Lab Inside, C-Lab Outside expands the support to include ideas and innovations from outside the Samsung network. The start-ups selected for the C-Lab Outside program are provided with financial support, business collaboration, and opportunities to participate in global IT exhibitions alongside Samsung.

At this year’s event, the following start-up innovations will be featured: Circulus, a companion robot that uses interactive technology; FITT, a healthcare data-based ICT service; Vtouch, a technology that controls objects with gestures using cameras; and Smoothy, a multi-party video call service that supports simultaneous video and voice.

Samsung and the innovators behind these C-Lab Outside start-ups are looking forward to participating in CES 2020 and to have the opportunity to expand the market reach of their innovations. For more information about C-Lab at CES 2020, please visit the booth #51248~#51259 in Sands, Hall G (Eureka Park Marketplace) on January 7 – 10, 2020.

In addition to supporting innovations and entrepreneurship, Samsung is committed to carrying out its vision “Together for Tomorrow! Enabling People” by empowering future generations to achieve their full potential through various education projects.

Samsung Electronics has released its latest movie project, “The Present”, a short film inspired by Samsung’s corporate citizenship vision of Enabling People

Samsung Electronics has released its latest movie project, “The Present”, a short film inspired by Samsung’s corporate citizenship vision of Enabling People that brings together themes of determination, entrepreneurship and collaboration.

“The Present” follows Sang-gu (Ha-kyun Shin), a man brought to present-day Seoul via time-travel from 1969. Sang-gu meets young entrepreneurs Ha-neul (Jun-myeon Kim, also known as EXO’s Suho), Bo-ra (Seul-ki Kim) and Young-bok (Su-bin Yoo) and ends up helping them as they work to create a thermal imaging camera to use in fire and rescue operations. “I wanted the film to be entertaining,” noted Director Jin-ho Hur, chiefly known for his work in the melodrama genre, “but I also wanted to accurately capture all the joys and sorrows faced by today’s young people as they go about launching their own business endeavors.”

Samsung Electronics along with livestock management solution company Lives’Talk, is donating 700 wearable devices for the tracking of nomadic livestock to local farmers in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In commemoration of this event, on June 26 around 50 participants attended a donation event, including Salembaev Zangar, Almaty Branch Manager of Kazakh Invest and Sang-woo Han, Head of Samsung Electronics SECE.

The idea for a wearable device for nomadic livestock came about through Samsung Tomorrow Solutions (STS), a competition for social contribution endeavors hosted by Samsung Electronics. The winner of the 2017 STS Grand Prize, a project named ‘Lives’Talk’, was proposed by a team of members with previous experience of living in Kazakhstan as a way to mitigate one of the biggest challenges faced by Kazakh nomadic communities, this being the amount of time taken to source and retrieve livestock in rural areas.

Following their 2017 STS win, Lives’Talk launched as its own company in 2018. In order to then make their idea a reality, Lives’Talk worked with a team from the Samsung C-Lab, Samsung Electronics’ internal venture training center. The realized product is a device capable of being attached to the backs of livestock for sturdy transmission.

Keeping Track of Livestock For a Living

Finding livestock that have been put out to pasture in rural Kazakhstan is the primary job of many nomads, but given the expansive terrain of this farmland, many animals are lost to predators if not found by nightfall. Given the arduous nature of these risky yet crucial tasks faced in Kazakh livestock farming, the number of nomadic farmers is fast decreasing.

In order to help mitigate these problems, the Lives’Talk team came up with a wearable device for livestock that harnesses a GPS transmitter-receiver and relay for real-time livestock tracking and management. Not only does this device effectively reduce the amount of time taken to find livestock but it can also solve the issue of missing livestock. Furthermore, the device also converts livestock information collected in real time into data useful for managing the entire livestock farming process, from raising to selling.

Taking Action

Lives’Talk’s pilot wearable device for livestock project will take place over two months at 50 pastures in Mynjylyk and Boleksaz, the two nomadic areas near Almaty, Kazakhstan, following the donation of the devices by Lives’Talk and Samsung to the nomadic communities there.

Samsung is not only supporting Lives’Talk’s pilot project but has also dispatched employee volunteers to help realize the project. These employee volunteers will train the recipients of the livestock tracking devices on how to use the devices and their wider tech ecosystem, providing entrepreneurial advice to help the farmers in these communities become independent.

“Samsung Electronics endeavors to recognize and promote individual talent and ability to the end of generating solutions that can help people,” noted Sang-woo Han. “With these wearable devices for nomadic livestock and the volunteer efforts of our employees, we hope not only to solve an issue specific to these Kazakh areas but also to make the future of the residents brighter.”

Samsung Electronics announced today that it will showcase eight innovative new projects related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), developed from its C-Lab

Samsung Electronics announced today that it will showcase eight innovative new projects related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), developed from its C-Lab (Creative Lab) program, from January 8 through 11 at CES 2019 Eureka Park. In addition, eight start-ups which have been spun off from C-Lab will showcase their newly released commercial products at CES to explore new business opportunities.

The eight new C-Lab projects include: an in-video virtual ad service ‘Tisplay’, an ASMR sound recording solution ‘aiMo’, an instant video making service ‘MEDEO’, an AI news analysis service ‘PRISMIT’, a custom perfume making service ‘Perfume Blender’, an auto-adjusting monitor ‘Girin Monitor Stand’, an AI desk light ‘alight’, and a hearing assistant solution ‘SnailSound’.

At CES 2019, C-Lab will introduce the biggest number of projects it has ever unveiled in a single show since its CES debut in 2016. This will help to refine the projects and prepare the prototypes that will eventually become finished products to take to market.

“We will present promising C-Lab projects leveraging AI technologies in the field of video content creation, perfume making and more. These are deeply related to our daily lives and we hope to catch the eyes of attendees,” said Inkuk Hahn, Vice President and Head of the Creativity & Innovation Center at Samsung Electronics.

In addition to these projects, eight start-ups which have been spun off from Samsung C-Lab – MOPIC, LINKFLOW, lululab, WELT, Cooljamm company, MONIT, BLUEFEEL and analogue plus –will participate at CES 2019 to showcase their newly released commercial products and explore global business opportunities.

Three of these C-Lab spin-offs have been recognized as CES 2019 Innovation Awards winners. One notable example is the wearable camera FITT360 by LINKFLOW, which was given an award in the Digital Imaging category for two consecutive years. MOPIC and lululab also received awards in the Portable Media Players and Accessories, and Biotech categories. Since 2016, C-Lab spin-off companies have been named winners six times and have proven their marketability and technology.

Created in December 2012, C-Lab is an in-house idea incubation program that encourages a creative corporate culture and nurtures innovative ideas from Samsung employees. The program supports the development of ideas from all areas of the business. Introduced in 2015, the C-Lab spin-off policy helps Samsung employees who have successfully completed C-Lab projects to launch their own start-ups. Samsung supports the spin-off companies through seed money investment and business consulting to accelerate their growth, while guaranteeing their independent management.

Appendix 1. C-Lab Projects

1. Tisplay
‘Tisplay’ is an in-video virtual ad service for creators to use while live streaming. Tisplay recognizes the surface of the creator’s clothing and places the ads as if they were actually printed on the clothing through computer vision and graphics technology. Creators are able to place not only ads but also various images related to the video content in a way to communicate with viewers in real-time. Furthermore, viewers can enjoy videos without pausing due to mid-video pop-up ads which often feel like spam.

2. aiMo
‘aiMo’ is an ASMR sound recording solution using a smartphone and cover case that simulates the human ear. When recording ASMR content with this solution, creators not only obtain spatially more enhanced sounds in terms of sound directivity, they also produce vivid, realistic ASMR sounds with AI sound rendering software without professional recording devices. Anyone can easily create high-quality ASMR sound content – even when outdoors.

3. MEDEO
‘MEDEO’ provides an instant video making service which allows users to shoot and edit simultaneously. Analyzing the scene and context with AI technology, MEDEO automatically integrates visual effects and background music and blends videos with the recorded videos during live streaming. In addition to that, it provides fully automated 1-click video rendering at an expert level that extracts only the core scenes of the saved video.

4. PRISMIT
‘PRISMIT’ is an AI news analysis service which creates issue-driven timelines in order to help readers understand the issue at a glance. When the user searches an issue or event, PRISMIT automatically curates the top five articles that are most representative among of the numerous articles available using issue clustering technology. This helps readers understand the context and history of the issue while many services simply offer the most read or most recent articles.

5. Perfume Blender
‘Perfume Blender’ is a custom perfume making service that enables users to make a customized fragrance with a compatible device and share the recipe through the app. When the user takes a photo of their favorite perfumes with the app, it analyzes the common ingredients and recommends fragrance recipes that the user might like. The user can directly make the perfume with those recipes or create a perfume by adjusting the ratio of the recipes through the device which has eight ingredients. Users are able to purchase additional scents.

6. Girin Monitor Stand
‘Girin Monitor Stand’ is an auto-adjusting monitor stand to ensure users have proper posture while on their computers at work. The sensor embedded stand keeps tracking the user’s posture, especially neck and head, in real-time. When the user has a bad posture, it subtly moves the monitor which naturally trains users to assume better posture without noticing the change in monitor position. Users can correct their posture by repeating this pattern to avoid postural strain in the neck, back, and shoulders.

7. alight
‘alight’ is an AI desk light which provides an optimal environment to increase concentration and provides lighting which is beneficial for the health of users. It detects user actions through the embedded camera and automatically changes the light according to the situation such as study, relax and focus. It comes with a controller which alerts the user to focus on study when the user is using a smartphone or sleeping. It also provides study history and time lapse videos of studying through the app.

8. SnailSound
SnailSound is a hearing assistant solution for people who have trouble hearing sounds. It consists of an app and an earpiece. The app analyzes user-preferred sound from feedbacks by simple hearing tests, then calibrates the sound to be heard clearer. With a smart nonlinear amplification and AI-based adaptive noise suppression algorithms, SnailSound amplifies inaudible sound and suppresses background noise at the same time to give a better hearing experience to the hearing impaired without expensive hearing aids.

Samsung Electronics announced that it will support three more projects to be spun off from C-Lab (Creative Lab), an in-house start-up incubation program. With the addition of AGWART, CATCH FLOW and FOR MAKERS, a total of 34 C-Lab alumni projects have now been launched as fully-fledged start-ups since 2015.

Indoor Smart Garden Solution PLANTBOX

AGWART created ‘PLANTBOX,’ an indoor smart garden solution that enables users to easily grow vegetables and herbs at home. PLANTBOX consists of a smart greenhouse similar to a small refrigerator, seed capsules and an app. Users only need to insert the seed capsule of choice, and PLANTBOX automatically detects the species of the seed and optimizes its internal environment including lighting, temperature, humidity, air quality and nutrients. Users are also able to monitor and control the environment via app.

Portable Directional Speaker ‘S-Ray’

CATCH FLOW developed ‘S-Ray,’ a portable directional speaker. Unlike conventional speakers which spread out sound in all directions, S-Ray sends the sound directly forward so only the people in the right direction can hear it. Overcoming technical difficulties from previous researches, CATCH FLOW was able to build a smaller, lighter device – only one tenth the size of a conventional directional speaker. Compared to previous solutions, S-Ray also runs on lower power without impacting volume or sound quality.

AI-based Research Platform ‘AppBee’

FOR MAKERS built ‘AppBee,’ a research platform that connects clients and users based on mobile usage patterns. AppBee, after users’ opt-in, predicts their characteristics by analysing their mobile usage patterns and automatically matches the users to suitable clients through AI-based algorithms. FOR MAKERS hopes to produce more reliable research results at a lower cost compared to conventional, untargeted surveys to enable creators – start-ups and large corporations alike – to refine products based on user feedback.

The three new start-ups have engaged in business consulting and mentoring programs with field experts for the past three months, to obtain business know-how and prepare for the successful spinoff. They have officially left Samsung Electronics as of May 31, 2018.

A number of C-Lab alumni are already proving to be fruitful. 2017 spin-off Monit will be launching its first commercial product ‘Monit by Huggies’ – a baby diaper sensor that distinguishes between urine and feces and notifies parents – in partnership with Yuhan-Kimberly this June. Monit is also planning to expand to inconsistence briefs for adults, for use in hospitals and senior care centers. Linkflow, which develops wearable cameras, saw its value increase 20-fold, after it was spun off in 2016. Linkflow’s FITT360 Security camera has especially been attracting attention from security companies around the world.

“During the past three years, 34 start-ups with 130 employees were spun off from C-Lab and they have hired an additional 170 people from outside of Samsung,” said Jaiil Lee, Vice President and Head of Creativity & Innovation Center at Samsung Research. “We will continue to give opportunities to our employees to realize their innovative ideas as an entrepreneur in start-ups accelerated by Samsung.”

About Samsung Electronics’ C-Lab

Created in December 2012, C-Lab is an in-house idea incubation program that encourages a creative corporate culture and nurtures innovative ideas from Samsung employees. The program supports the development of ideas from all areas of the business. Introduced in 2015, the C-Lab spin-off policy helps Samsung employees who have successfully completed C-Lab projects to launch their own start-ups.
