3D content has often been associated with inconvenience. Enjoying it typically required specialized equipment such as 3D glasses or head-mounted displays (HMDs). Imperfections in the delivery of 3D images caused crosstalk, potentially leading to dizziness. These discomforts would chip away the immersion of 3D content.

Samsung Electronics is changing that narrative with the introduction of the Odyssey 3D (G90XF) — a finely tuned glasses-free 3D gaming monitor. Featuring eye-tracking and view-mapping technology, the Odyssey 3D marks a paradigm shift in immersive viewing and gaming experiences.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Donghwa Lim from the Enterprise R&D Lab and Taekwan Lee from the Product Innovation Lab, both part of the Visual Display (VD) Business at Samsung Electronics, to discuss how the Odyssey 3D is redefining perceptions of 3D.

The Three Core Technologies Behind Odyssey 3D

3D displays create a sense of dimension using binocular disparity, in which the brain perceives depth by processing the slightly different images seen by each eye. Leveraging this principle, the Odyssey 3D delivers a glasses-free 3D experience by precisely presenting different images to each eye without the need for external equipment. The eye-tracking technology is designed to recognize users’ eyes even when they are wearing glasses.

At the heart of the Odyssey 3D are three key technologies — eye tracking, view mapping and a lenticular lens.

Eye tracking is enabled by a stereo camera mounted at the top of the monitor, detecting and tracking the user’s eye movements in real time.

“Because the two cameras capture different images, much like human eyes, they can determine the exact position of the user’s eyes and distance between the eyes and the monitor in real time,” said Lim. “This real-time eye position detection allows us to deliver a precise 3D image, even when the user moves.”

Based on this data, the system calculates the correct pixel positioning for each eye and reconstructs a single image through a process called view mapping. The final mapped images are then separately delivered to each eye through the lenticular lens, allowing the images from the display panels to be visible to each eye by utilizing light refraction.

What’s more, the Odyssey 3D isn’t limited to 3D gameplay alone. Since the Odyssey 3D was developed as a gaming monitor, it performs exceptionally well in terms of picture quality and response speed, even when used for 2D gameplay. The lenticular lens activates only when a 3D mode is enabled by Odyssey 3D Hub.

Minimizing Crosstalk With Samsung’s Advanced Display Technology

While 3D effects offer new levels of immersion, even minor visual inconsistencies can disrupt the experience. Samsung has dedicated significant resources to ensuring premium 3D visuals.

“Crosstalk occurs when the images perceived by the left and right eyes aren’t properly aligned,” said Lim. “It can lead to dizziness and other visual discomforts, so we developed several techniques to reduce it.”

“Even the slightest misalignments during the production or assembly of camera and display components can affect image accuracy,” he noted. “To address this, Samsung applies post-assembly calibration for both the camera and display panel and stores unit-specific data into a dedicated chip inside the monitor.”

In addition to hardware calibration, the Odyssey 3D features a deep learning-based eye-tracking algorithm and a specially engineered display cell coating designed to reduce light distortion and glare — all contributing to minimizing crosstalk and delivering a refined 3D experience.

Driving 3D Gaming Innovation Through Industry Partnership

The true strength of the Odyssey 3D comes to life during gameplay. To bring immersive and personalized gaming experiences to users, Samsung is actively collaborating with industry partners to optimize games for glasses-free 3D.

Samsung has made high-quality 3D gaming content available through Odyssey 3D Hub — a Windows-based 3D content platform that also supports the conversion of 2D photos and videos into 3D.

Joint efforts are also underway to expand 3D gaming content.

“Game developers are constantly exploring ways to offer new experiences to users,” said Lee. “One of those directions is 3D gaming.”

While the 3D gaming market is still emerging, Lee emphasized that industry-wide collaboration is key to accelerating its growth.

“The First Berserker: Khazan” — a recently published game developed by Nexon Korea and Neople — stands as a notable example of how 3D immersion can come to life through collaboration with Samsung during development.

“Through this partnership, Nexon, Neople and Samsung have been working closely to tailor the 3D visuals, carefully adjusting them based on the composition of characters and backgrounds. We ensured that everything from scene-specific factors to cinematic transitions could be presented more vividly on Odyssey 3D monitor,” he explained.

“Creating effects like drifting particles, fast-moving flames and cinematic cutscenes[1] was technically challenging, but I’m proud of what we achieved through teamwork,” Lee added. “In particular, the snowy mountain scene in Khazan gives the impression that snowflakes are flying directly toward the player when played on the Odyssey 3D. It’s an experience I would strongly recommend trying firsthand.”

To explore this fusion of creativity and technology, Samsung Newsroom spoke with the developers behind Solo Leveling:ARISE. They shared insights into how they captured the webtoon’s intense action and stylish visuals in the game, and how the Odyssey OLED G8 has been instrumental in this process.

Q: What are your roles in developing Solo Leveling:ARISE?

Junha: I’m responsible for creating the dungeons and monsters in Solo Leveling:ARISE. This includes designing the environments where battles take place and developing the monsters-players encounter. Essentially, I establish the game’s META to ensure players have a rewarding and engaging combat experience.

*META: An acronym for “Most Effective Tactics Available,” representing the optimal strategies or approaches used by players in a game.

JaeSeong: I’m in charge of combat balance. My role is to allow players to craft their own combat styles by combining various elements like weapons, skills, hunters, and shadows. Players will enjoy the combination-dependent controls and actions, as well as the variety of buffs and debuffs that grant characters and enemies, which further enhance their attacks to clear dungeons and tricky bosses.

Q: Can you give us an overview of Solo Leveling:ARISE? What was your main focus in developing the game?

Junha: Solo Leveling:ARISE is an action RPG based on Solo Leveling, the popular webtoon. We strived to stay true to the original work while at the same time leveraging our expertise to enhance the experience with high-quality action scenes and cinematic cut scenes, immersing players in a way that only a game can.

JaeSeong: Given the popularity of the original work, our goal was to faithfully capture each character’s unique combat style as depicted in the webtoon. In the game, we allow players to experiment with different skills and weapons. Additionally, we wanted to offer something special, so we included new, original content and behind-the-scenes stories that weren’t in the webtoon. This adds a fresh dimension to the game, enhancing the overall experience.

Junha: For Solo Leveling:ARISE, we wanted fast-paced combat and the freedom to pursue a variety of fighting styles. The goal was to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach and enable players to adapt their strategies based on the boss or challenge they’re facing.

JaeSeong: Our focus was on balancing the different characters, monsters, and dungeons to offer diverse combat experiences. For each character, we added specific skills and combos in addition to their unique abilities from the original series. The challenge was to maintain balance by tweaking attack ranges, damage rates, and speed to make combat more engaging, especially when playing as a team.

Q: As a game developer, what do you think are the most important elements of the gaming environment for players? Did the Odyssey OLED G8 sufficiently deliver during development and playtesting?

JaeSeong: In the RPG action game Solo Leveling:ARISE, players rely heavily on visual information like character movements and the detailed environments during combat. Therefore, having a display that can clearly present this information is crucial. A wide monitor, in particular, enhances the visibility of character motions and provides a broader field of view, helping you catch every detail during intense battles.

The Odyssey OLED G8’s wide screen and high resolution made it easy to catch even the smallest details in the game. This helps gamers play better, too. For instance, I could see attack animations more clearly, which helped me dodge more precisely. I also noticed effects and background details that I’d missed before.

Junha: An outstanding monitor like the Odyssey OLED G8 that has great contrast and vibrant colors can really bring out the game’s unique art style, whether you’re exploring gates or summoning shadows. The Odyssey OLED G8 proved its value in the game development process. The 4K OLED’s clear images and wide color gamut were incredibly helpful for discussions with the art team on character effects, allowing us to discuss colors and expressions in greater detail.

Q: What other aspects are important for action-based RPGs?

JaeSeong: A high refresh rate is key for smooth gameplay. It ensures that the screen transitions are seamless, without tearing or stuttering, which reduces eye strain and makes for a more fluid and enjoyable gaming experience.

Junha: To fully experience the intense combat and character animations in Solo Leveling:ARISE, you need a monitor with fast response time and high resolution. The high refresh rate of the Odyssey OLED G8 made combat in <Solo Leveling:ARISE> feel seamless and smooth.

Q: What features of the Odyssey OLED G8 would you recommend to Solo Leveling:ARISE players?

Junha: The Odyssey OLED G8 has a lot going for it, but what really stood out to me was the OLED Glare-free feature. Other monitors that use anti-reflection films usually end up dulling colors. This monitor, on the other hand, reduces glare while keeping the image vibrant and clear.

JaeSeong: One feature I think players will find super useful is the Game Bar. By selecting the genre you’re playing, the Game Bar automatically optimizes picture quality and sound for that specific genre. According to the selected genre, the display’s brightness is adjusted for better visibility and it delivers richer sound, which really pulls you deeper into the game.

Q: Any final thoughts for players enjoying Solo Leveling:ARISE?

Held from August 20-25 in Cologne, Germany, Gamescom 2024 spanned an impressive 230,000 square meters. Over 1,400 companies from showcased their latest games and technology to more than 335,000 fans from around 120 countries at the annual gaming conference. A Magical Glasses-Free 3D Gaming Experience 

The booth centered around Samsung’s newest Odyssey 3D monitor — a glasses-free display delivering a 3D experience unlike anything currently available on the market.

While preparing for Gamescom 2024, Samsung determined that the optimal distance to experience 3D gaming on the Odyssey 3D was about 60 cm (approximately 2 feet). Monitors at the booth were positioned from this distance, allowing fans to experience Eye Tracking and View Mapping technology that projects 3D graphics with astounding picture quality.

With these advancements, Samsung continues to build on its legacy of excellence and innovation by reshaping the gaming landscape and transforming how people interact with their favourite titles. The technology left a lasting impression on Gamescom 2024 attendees. “The 3D graphics made it look like I could reach out and touch the world in the game,” said one visitor. “Everything felt so much more real.”

“Gamescom is where passionate gamers come together,” said Donghwa Lim, Enterprise R&D Lab, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, who oversees the Odyssey 3D’s hardware development. “We had a great opportunity to see how the 3D monitor we developed can captivate people’s attention and exceed their gaming expectations.”

“I was pleased to see people enjoying games on the 3D monitor at Gamescom,” added Sukho Song from Product Innovation Lab, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, who specializes in 2D-to-3D transition technology. “We worked hard to develop a gaming monitor optimized for 3D to create new viewing environments and dimensions for gaming fans.”

For gamers who enjoy playing via consoles, Samsung showcased the best gaming TVs on the market at its booth. Visitors went head-to-head in today’s hottest sports games on the 75” Neo QLED 8K and 98” Neo QLED TVs. Motion Xcelerator and AI-optimized picture quality added to the excitement of the matches.

Gamescom 2024, held from August 21 to 25, is the world’s largest leading event and features more than 1,400 exhibitors, including hardware, software, and game content producers. Samsung will showcase its high-end gaming monitors — including the new Odyssey 3D and models from the Odyssey G6, G8 and G9 series — at its booth, which spans 800m2 and is Samsung’s most immersive booth to date.

Glasses-Free 3D Gaming With Odyssey 3D

The Odyssey 3D’s innovative light field display (LFD) technology creates lifelike 3D images from 2D content by using a lenticular lens[1] on the front panel. Combined with Eye Tracking and View Mapping technology, Odyssey 3D ensures an optimized 3D experience without the need for separate 3D glasses. Eye Tracking monitors the movement of both eyes using a built-in stereo camera, while View Mapping continuously adjusts the image to enhance depth perception.

The Odyssey 3D can seamlessly switch between 2D and 3D modes based on the user’s preference. Offered in 27” and 37” sizes, it features a 4K resolution display, a rapid 1ms gray-to-gray(GTG) response time, and a high refresh rate of 165Hz, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted gameplay without any afterimages or interruptions.

Expanding the 2024 Odyssey OLED Lineup

Samsung has announced the expansion of its highly acclaimed Odyssey OLED lineup, which features the introduction of three new models: the Odyssey OLED G95SD, G93SD and G85SD.[2]

• The Odyssey OLED G9 series, including the G95SD and G93SD models, delivers an immersive experience with dual QHD (5,120 x 1,440) resolution, a 32:9 ultra-wide screen ratio, 1,800R curved design, Smart Hub,[3] a 240Hz refresh rate and a 0.03ms gray-to-gray (GTG) response time.
• The 34” Odyssey OLED G8 (G85SD model) offers ultra-wide QHD (3,440 x 1,440) resolution, a 21:9 screen ratio, 1,800R curved design, Smart Hub, a 175Hz refresh rate and a 0.03ms GTG response time.

Building on the success of the Odyssey OLED G6 and G8 introduced in June, Samsung now offers OLED monitors ranging from 27” to 49” — including the new widescreen models — further diversifying its comprehensive OLED portfolio and providing a wider range of options for gamers.
