Sleep Apnea feature[1] is now available on the Galaxy Watch series, through the Samsung Health Monitor app[2].

This growth follows the feature’s receipt of the Medical Device Registration Certificate from the Medical Device Authority in Malaysia. The certification affirms that Samsung meets the Medical Device Authority’s health, safety and environmental protection standards, reinforcing its leadership in sleep technology. Additionally, the feature was also approved by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration and Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority.

The milestone builds on Samsung’s groundbreaking De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) — the first of its kind for a wearable device to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.[3] The Sleep Apnea feature was also approved by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Brazil’s health regulatory agency ANVISA, and Health Canada.

Recognizing the critical role of sleep in overall health, Samsung is committed to helping users improve sleep quality by understanding their sleep patterns, providing personalized sleep coaching and optimizing their sleep environments. With the Sleep Apnea feature, more users can now detect symptoms[4] earlier — helping to prevent health issues associated with this common yet often undiagnosed condition.

The Sleep Apnea feature reflects Samsung’s ongoing commitment to providing users with meaningful insights to support healthy sleep habits. By expanding access to this FDA-authorized feature globally, Samsung is empowering users worldwide to take proactive steps toward better sleep health.

6.4 million Malaysians have hypertension, according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey in 2019[1], and almost HALF that number are not aware of it, because many do not exhibit the symptoms, unless they have their blood pressure measured. They call hypertension the “silent killer” for a reason.

Unfortunately, only 53% of Malaysia adults had undergone medical check-ups in the past year, according to the Ministry of Health[2], which is not satisfactory. Going for regular check-ups will help you detect any disease or condition even if you feel well, without any symptoms or signs of illness. Early detection, followed by treatment can result in a better prognosis and lowers the risk of severe complications. Routine check-ups are generally recommended[3] to be once every 3 years if you’re under the age of 50 and in good health, and once a year once you turn 50.

Samsung has launched blood pressure and electrocardiogram (ECG) tracking[4] for the Galaxy Watch5 starting 25 Jan in Malaysia. For those who want to elevate their fitness journey, the Galaxy Watch is your ideal personal fitness monitoring device to complement your regular medical check-ups.

Using the Galaxy Watch to measure your blood pressure

A blood pressure test measures the pressure in the arteries as the heart pumps, and is done as a part of a routine health check-up or as a screening for hypertension. It’s important to track your blood pressure readings regularly to take proactive steps and lifestyle modifications to improve your blood pressure. Beyond going for your usual check-ups, you use personal monitoring tools to check your blood pressure at home. The Galaxy Watch is built with a Photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor inside. You can record your systolic and diastolic pressure, as well as your pulse rate, and record it in the Samsung Health Monitor Blood Pressure app[5].

Take an ECG reading with your Galaxy Watch

An ECG is a simple test to check your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity, in order to detect irregular rhythms. Sensors are attached to the skin to detect the electrical signals produced by your heart each time it beats and the information is recorded on a graph. The Galaxy Watch is built with an ECG sensor, while you can use the Samsung Health Monitor ECG app[7] to create, record, save, and export ECG data.

2. Wear the Galaxy Watch snugly on your wrist.

3. Open the Samsung Health Monitor app on your Galaxy Watch.

4. To take an ECG reading, rest your fingertip of the opposite hand lightly on the Galaxy Watch’s top button for 30 seconds.

5. The ECG data is synced to the paired Galaxy smartphone where a PDF report is created.

For your Galaxy Watch to work optimally, do follow these important, detailed instructions on how to set up and calibrate your Galaxy Watch, Galaxy smartphone and Samsung Health Monitor app https://www.samsung.com/my/apps/samsung-health-monitor/

Additionally, with your Galaxy Watch, you can measure your Body Composition[8], which shows you your body fat percentage, muscle mass, and body water percentage. With that, you can make the right fitness, nutritional, or lifestyle changes to increase muscle and lose fat.

Level up your lifestyle and fitness journey with the stylish Galaxy Watch today, but remember to always go for regular medical check-ups and get any advice or counsel from your physician!

Samsung Electronics announced today that the Samsung Health Monitor app has been cleared by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), as a Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), making it a government-cleared, over-the-counter and cuffless blood pressure monitoring application. The Samsung Health Monitor app, when paired with advanced sensor technology on the Galaxy Watch Active2,1 enables you to easily and more conveniently measure and track your blood pressure.

Globally, high blood pressure is known to significantly increase your risk of brain, kidney and heart diseases, including stroke and coronary heart disease when not managed properly. By helping users measure and track their blood pressure, the Samsung Health Monitor app gives people greater insight into their health and allows them to make more informed decisions, to lead healthier lives.

“The Samsung Health Monitor app has the potential to help millions of people around the world who are affected by high blood pressure,” says Taejong Jay Yang, Corporate SVP and Head of Health Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “This is one of many examples of how Samsung is integrating its best-in-class hardware with the latest software innovations to innovate mobile experiences.”

Once your Galaxy Watch Active2 device has been calibrated with a traditional cuff, you can simply tap to “Measure” your blood pressure anytime, anywhere. The device measures blood pressure through pulse wave analysis, which is tracked with the Heart Rate Monitoring sensors. The program then analyzes the relationship between the calibration value and the blood pressure change to determine the blood pressure.2 To ensure accuracy, users are required to calibrate their device at least every four weeks.

With the addition of blood pressure monitoring, the Galaxy Watch Active2 boasts Samsung’s most advanced health and wellness capabilities yet. The Galaxy Watch Active2 comes with more sensitive and accurate Heart Rate Monitoring sensors, and enables users to track their exercise, sleep, stress and get added healthcare insights that can help you improve your wellbeing.3

The Samsung Health Monitor app will be available on the Galaxy Watch Active2 within the third quarter and will progressively expand to upcoming Galaxy Watch devices.
