Samsung has enabled seamless integration of IKEA’s twenty-five[1] practical Matter-over-Thread smart home devices — including smart bulbs and plugs — into the SmartThings platform, allowing users to effortlessly incorporate them into daily life.

Easy Integration With SmartThings Through Matter-Enabled IKEA Devices

Twenty-five IKEA smart home devices including a scroll wheel remote, smart bulbs, plugs, temperature and humidity sensors, air quality sensors, motion sensors, door sensors and water leak sensors, now support the global smart home standard Matter.[2]

Previously, connecting IKEA devices to SmartThings required an IKEA smart home hub[3] and SmartThings hub, but they can now be connected directly to SmartThings hub. They also work with Samsung appliances including TVs, air conditioners and washing machines, as well as a wide range of third-party devices and protocols supported by the platform.

Smarter Care – From Checking on Loved Ones to Optimizing Sleep Environments 

Users can connect an IKEA door sensor to SmartThings and attach it to a frequently used door to monitor when their parents start their day and whether they are active at home through SmartThings Family Care. This offers a convenient way to check on loved ones, even when living apart.

Installed on a wall, IKEA’s air quality sensors and temperature and humidity sensors collect data on temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels and light intensity. SmartThings compares these readings with recommended ranges for optimal sleep and provides a sleep environment report with actionable insights — such as lowering the temperature to 19-21°C — helping create an ideal bedroom environment.

Users can also set routines that activate the air conditioner’s dehumidification mode when rising humidity is detected. If the water leak sensor detects moisture, it sends an immediate alert enabling a prompt response.

Intuitive Control With the Scroll Wheel Remote 

Ahead of launch, Samsung and IKEA conducted multiple rounds of validation to enhance connectivity stability and implemented a dedicated user experience within the SmartThings app for full compatibility.

A standout device is the scroll wheel remote, which significantly enhances user experience. When connected to lighting, users can precisely adjust brightness and color temperature by rotating the wheel, making it easy to create the desired ambiance. It can also be used for devices requiring fine control, such as blinds.[4] It targets the design-conscious younger generation, who prioritizes aesthetic value in every detail, down to a single switch or lighting.

Expanding a Boundless Smart Home Ecosystem With Early Adoption of Thread 

Samsung is not only leading the Matter ecosystem through the rapid adoption of new standards, but also demonstrating strong technology leadership in the smart home market.

SmartThings was the first to adopt Thread[5] 1.4 — a low-power, short-range networking technology essential for smart home ecosystems — enabling Thread networks across brands to operate as a single unified system that enhances user convenience while helping drive the wider adoption of smart homes.

Enhanced Family Care Makes It Easier To Check In on Loved Ones

Family Care connects SmartThings with a range of home appliances and mobile devices to provide notifications regarding the activities of users’ aging parents and reminders for medication and hospital visits — as well as location-based alerts. With this update, the service enables even more thoughtful care.

Additionally, Samsung’s new Care on Call[1] feature allows users to more closely check on the status of the care recipient through a simple phone call. When a caregiver using the service calls the care recipient, a floating pop-up that displays key information like the time of the first activity of the day, the most recent activity time and the local weather — all at a glance — appears before the call begins. This helps caregivers ask more meaningful check-in questions and respond accordingly.

SmartThings can also continuously monitor devices like air conditioners, air purifiers, dehumidifiers and humidifiers for indoor temperature, humidity and air quality. If unusual usage patterns are detected, the caregiver is immediately notified and can remotely control the relevant device[2].

Family Care has made the Safety Patrol feature — which utilizes SmartThings to send a new Bespoke AI Jet Bot Steam Ultra to check various areas around the house — even more convenient. If the care recipient’s activity is not detected for a specified period of time, users receive a notification and the feature can be remotely activated if the caregiver needs to take action[3]. Using a camera built into the robot vacuum, caregivers can view issues that might occur — such as a person lying incapacitated — and two-way communication through the built-in speaker and microphone allows them to act.

To further enhance the level of care provided to loved ones, the Care Insight feature been enhanced to provide even more actionable, long-term data within the Family Care service. It analyzes factors like temperature and humidity levels, paying attention to whether they deviate from optimal ranges. It also tracks significant changes in activity levels and connected device usage compared to the previous week.

Expansion of Now Brief to TVs and Family Hub

Now Brief delivers a rich AI experience by integrating a broad range of key SmartThings services that help users stay informed about their daily lives, their family members and conditions inside and outside the home.

With the launch of the Galaxy S26 series, Now Brief will support Home Security, Family Care and Pet Care, in addition to existing features that include Home Insight, Energy and the Sleep Environment Report. Through Now Brief, users can access the useful information needed to care for themselves, their families and their homes at a glance.

Now Brief is set to deliver a consistent customized experience throughout the home[4], and will soon roll out in phases to TVs launched in 2024 or later, as well as Family Hub refrigerators launched in 2021 or later.

For added convenience, users will not need to manually launch Now Brief. If the feature is set up in advance, it will be automatically activated when they approach the TV, touch the Family Hub refrigerator screen or open and close the refrigerator door.

And now, whether at home or on the go, the expanded Now Brief helps users stay up to date by providing information such as home device status and energy usage, as well as the sleep status of the previous night, Home Security updates based on door locks, door sensors, and security mode, parents’ daily activity updates and dog-walking information[5].

Effortless Home Device Management with Bixby and SmartThings

Equipped with a smarter Bixby, Samsung TVs can detect, connect and control appliances with Samsung SmartThings enabled. By speaking directly to their screen, users can leverage the SmartThings ecosystem to execute voice commands, such as “Turn off the oven now,” or “Set the air conditioner to 25 degrees,” transforming their smart TV into a central hub for managing other smart home appliances.

Samsung Newsroom attended the final Tech Forum session, titled “Understanding Home, Understanding You: Rethinking the Role of the Home in the Era of AI,” to examine the transformative potential of AI in smart home innovation and the need for collaboration to deliver on the promise of Home AI.

Smart UI as the Gateway to Home AI

User interface (UI) is a critical element in the Home AI experience, serving as the bridge between users and their mobile devices, TVs, home appliances and more.

“UI is a key area in the age of AI,” said Patrick Chomet, Mobile Strategy Advisor at Samsung Electronics. “With the advent of LLM multimodal AI, a big shift has taken place in User Interface (UI), enabling people to get things done in natural and simple ways such as gesture, voice or text interaction. Users no longer needs to understand devices, rather the device should understand the user’s intent.”

He explained how intelligent user interfaces not only enable more intuitive interactions but also procure deeper understandings of user context and intent, which brands can use to optimize in-home solutions.

“We have implemented an intuitive and concise UI for various SmartThings features,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics.

She engaged the audience with examples of our latest SmartThings functions including Quick Remote, a feature that enables users to control their TVs with a connected Galaxy smartphone; 3D Map View, a feature that allows users to manage their entire home and check energy consumption through Galaxy smartphones and tablets; and Home Insight, a feature that provides timely home reports and delivers personalized recommendations to users.

The Role of Platforms and Standardization in Shaping Smart Homes

 The panelists then delved into the efforts required to make Home AI a reality. Moderator Carolina Milanesi, CEO and founder of Heart of Tech and President at Creative Strategies, introduced the topics of integrated AI platforms and industry standards to guide the discussion.

“As we scale our AI platform to reach across applications, services and multiple devices, the experience can be optimized around the user,” said Chomet. “User context and richer insights can be gathered to deliver relevant and truly personalized experiences.”

“The SmartThings platform is 10 years in the making and while the concept of a smart home isn’t new, AI technology is what is truly creating the intelligent home” added Jung, highlighting how a consistent and connected AI platform empowers users to enjoy effortless convenience from anywhere. “The transition from a device-centric philosophy to an AI-powered, user-centric one provides users with a personalized, connected experience that feels like home — no matter where they are.”

Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), noted the importance of industry standards in building an ecosystem in which devices can be connected simply, securely and seamlessly.

“Building blocks for AI in the home are grounded in seamless connectivity, with AI relying on device interoperability to thrive. A common language like Matter enables devices to communicate effortlessly, setting the stage for AI innovation,” he said, highlighting that the goal is not just to create a connected experience but to foster a robust and trustworthy industry while making smart homes more accessible and reliable.

“Alliance Members like Samsung are doing remarkable work in the AI space, showcasing how technology can adapt to users’ needs, creating a smarter and more personalized living experience,” said Richardson, reaffirming the company’s dedication to collaboration. “I am continually inspired to see how these advancements are shaping the future of connected homes.”

A More Personalized, Secure Smart Home

Addressing concerns regarding the challenge of providing personalized experiences in homes shared by multiple people, Chomet spoke on how AI technology can understand intent and context to provide an optimized experience for each user. He emphasized that Samsung will innovate for multi-device connectivity, rather than individual products.

Jung also cited practical cases of how Samsung Health and SmartThings are connecting data and devices to provide hyper-personalized health experiences. For example, Samsung Health and SmartThings can optimize sleep environments by automatically adjusting temperature and humidity based on users’ sleep patterns and the environmental conditions they live in. When Galaxy devices recognize that users have been exercising, SmartThings will activate appliances such as air conditioners and washing machines upon their return home.

The discussion then touched on the critical role of security and the protection of personal information in smart homes.

“Samsung places the highest priority on security in every aspect,” said Jung. She highlighted how Knox Matrix safeguards the smart home ecosystem while Knox Vault protects hardware.   “By integrating the expansive SmartThings ecosystem and AI with the robust security of Samsung Knox, users can enjoy personalized smart living experiences safely.”

“With more than eight out of ten consumers stating that security is ‘important’ or ‘very important’ to them, security and privacy protection are key factors,” said Richardson, echoing the importance of trust in connected devices. “Matter, our next-generation smart home standard, is built with security in mind and offers a level of trust and clarity users can rely on.”

The Home AI session highlighted the advancements AI brings to creating smarter, safer and more adaptive living spaces. Another game-changing feature is AI Select, introduced for the first time on the Galaxy S25 series. Accessible through the Edge Panel, AI Select functions as a personal AI assistant, capable of summarizing lengthy articles in seconds or aiding in creative tasks like generating colorful images with Drawing Assist.

With One UI 7, the Galaxy S25 series’ built-in multimodal AI recognizes natural language, images and text, enabling users to interact naturally and achieve more with minimal effort. This means its intelligent features can be triggered by simple voice commands. For instance, saying “My eyes are tired” prompts the Galaxy S25 series to activate the blue light filter, while “Find a photo of Max from last winter in a red coat, eating cake” searches the Gallery app to locate the desired image.

Circle to Search has also been enhanced to identify music playing on-screen without needing to open a separate app.

While watching YouTube videos, users can also issue voice commands like “List the place mentioned in this video and save it as a Note,” and Galaxy AI, powered by Google’s Gemini, seamlessly saves the location directly to Samsung Notes.

Home AI: Technology That Understands Users’ Tastes and Their Living Spaces

The BESPOKE AI Lifestyle Zone demonstrated various connected experiences with Samsung home appliances including the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI and the Bespoke Slide-in Range.

When a user asks Bixby if there are any ingredients nearing their expiration date, the voice assistant provides a list. A follow-up request for recipes prompts Bixby to suggest tailored recommendations[6] using those ingredients. Bixby can then send the recipe instructions to the Bespoke Slide-in Range, automatically setting the temperature and cooking time.

▲ When mobile GPS and home sensors detect that users are away, appliances can autonomously operate in a Home AI environment to match users’ preferences. Noisy tasks like the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI emptying its dust bin[7] or the WindFree Air Conditioner drying its interior can be handled while users are away.

If sensors detect suspicious activity while family members are away, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI moves to the location to assess the situation with its internal camera and sends a SmartThings notification to the user’s mobile device for real-time video monitoring. If an intrusion is identified, an alert will immediately be sent to the user’s connected security provider.[8] Furthermore, Samsung appliances proactively prevent everyday dangers. For instance, the Bespoke AI Induction cooktop[9] will automatically adjust its power to prevent any accidents if left on for too long.[10]

Video displays presented Samsung’s Multi Device Experience (MDE) features and highlighted the values of Ease of Use, Care and Saving — showcasing the WindFree Air Conditioner that customizes operation according to usage patterns, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI that records videos of pets[11] with a built-in camera and sends a notification to SmartThings and the SmartThings energy usage report[12] that makes energy use more efficient.

AI Home Touch Screens Easy Control Anytime, Anywhere

AI Home[13] touch screens allow users to reduce the burden of household chores and easily control their connected Samsung home appliances from the comfort of their home.[14]

The Screens Everywhere Zone showcased a refrigerator with a new 9-inch AI Home screen and the new Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer set with 7-inch AI Home screen, both introduced this year. Appliances equipped with AI Home can be controlled securely without the need for a separate hub.

Samsung showcased AI-powered smart appliances designed to save time and enhance efficiency. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, for example, adjusts washing and drying based on fabric type while completing both tasks — eliminating the need to move the laundry across machines. Similarly, the Bespoke AI Jet Bot Combo[1] learns users’ daily routines to autonomously clean floors and manage mopping through Bixby.[2]

Integrated with advanced connected sensors, SmartThings can detect incidents like falls, sending emergency alerts to pre-approved connected devices such as family members’ smartphones, TVs and Family Hub refrigerators[4].

This exhibition space captured visitors’ attention by showcasing comprehensive management solutions for all household members in user’s lives including pets, children and plants. Highlights included the Galaxy SmartTag2 for tracking pet activity and detecting unusual behavior, and SmartThings-enabled features that send alerts when a baby cries or monitor and adjust the temperature and light levels to support plant care.

Home for Productivity

In the Home for Art zone, visitors were greeted by famous works of art — presented by Samsung Art Store in collaboration with seven renowned art institutions including the Musée d’Orsay, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), Museo Nacional del Prado, Tate, Belvedere and Art Basel. Creating a Smarter Mobile Future With Galaxy AI

Finally, guests experienced the latest AI features across the Galaxy lineup in the Galaxy AI Ecosystem space. Showcasing a truly integrated experience, various devices from the Galaxy product family were on display — including the Galaxy Z series, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Book.

Visitors expressed keen interest in the new levels of connectivity between devices, with some commenting that the practical features are exactly what they’ve been waiting for.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced it is showcasing its latest energy-efficient appliance lineup for the European lifestyle at IFA 2024. The new product range includes a BESPOKE AI Washer with A-55% extra energy efficiency,[1] a Bespoke AI Laundry Combo that achieves an A rating for the complete cycle,[2] and an A-10% Bespoke Dishwasher [3]. Drawing on its longstanding dedication to enhancing energy efficiency, Samsung has improved its core technologies to respond to the consumer needs for better ways to save energy in everyday life.

“Samsung has a long track record of bringing its energy efficient lineup to European markets, and IFA is an ideal setting for showcasing these types of solutions,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team for Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “We expect that new models will be the right choice for customers who are seeking for the extra energy efficiency at home.”

A More Efficient Washing Experience 

The most notable achievement out of Samsung’s high-energy rating lineup at IFA 2024 is the BESPOKE AI Washer. The model, planned for next year’s launching[4], consumes up to 55% less energy than the minimum energy efficiency requirements for a Class A rating[5]. Following the A-40% model that launched in the first half this year, the new product has applied Samsung’s technologies to achieve an additional energy saving.

Samsung applies advanced technologies to achieve up to 55% less energy consumption than the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the Class A rating. The core of these advanced technologies is the Bubble Shot, which pulls soapy water through the circulation pump and sprays it on top of the laundry inside the drum. This makes washing more effective by drenching the laundry more easily and allowing the detergent to penetrate clothing evenly. It combines with Ecobubble and algorithms to enhance extra energy efficiency.

The implementation of AI Home[6] is an additional noteworthy change. This 7’’ wide LCD touchscreen on the device serves as an intuitive control center for the laundry. Not only can users quickly choose their laundry cycle, but they can also receive the personalized washing recommendations that suits their habits and periodic needs. [7] It allows for effective user control and laundry care.

All-in-one, Energy Efficient Laundry Solution

At IFA, Samsung is also displaying the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, which will soon be available in the European market. The model combines a washer and a dryer in a single machine freeing users from the hassle of transferring the load to the dryer after washing. The combo is distinctive in that there is significant improvement in energy efficiency, achieving an A rating across the entire washing and drying cycle[8] , with an A-20% for washing[9]. This is the highest level in Samsung’s combo lineup in Europe.

Samsung has worked hard to improve the drying efficiency especially. The Heatpump Drying technology dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at low temperatures. Furthermore, a specially designed duct structure improves the efficiency of internal air circulation, allowing for the efficient reuse and transfer of heat energy. Meanwhile, to achieve a high energy rating in the wash only cycle, the Bubble Shot Technology is implemented. It make the laundry drench well by spraying soapy water from the top using the circulation pump. As a result, the combo’s complete wash cycle exceeds the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the Class A threshold by up to 20%, with the wash and dry cycle receiving a well-deserved Class A.

Clean Effectively, Save More Energy

The Bespoke Dishwasher[10] with extra energy efficiency will be also displayed at IFA 2024. It not only boasts a stylish look with its Kitchen Fit Sliding Door[11] design that seamlessly matches kitchen furniture, but also offers effective performance while saving energy by up to 10% than the requirements for an A energy rating. [12]

A WaterJet Clean and an Active Fan Dry system play an important role in delivering this extra efficiency. First, WaterJet Clean delivers intensive cleaning from every angle with rotating dual wash arms, thanks to the specially designed All-in-one Sump module.[13] It generates a unique flow path to make the product exceptionally power efficient and uses only 7.9 liters[14] of water ― which is a significantly low level compared to conventional models[15] ― without impacting its performance.

The Active Fan Dry system,[16] on the other hand, enhances internal air circulation, leading to less energy consumption. It blows gentle and moderate wind using two fans on the walls of the tub during drying. Since this wind helps evaporate moisture, less latent heat is required from the rinsing water. Therefore, it reduces the amount of energy used for heating the rinsing water. As a result, users can neatly finish the cycle with enhanced energy efficiency.

Additional Energy Savings Through SmartThings Connectivity

With these advancements in hardware, Samsung’s new energy efficient lineup also support SmartThings AI Energy Mode.[17] After connecting appliances to SmartThings, users can check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption. And when the estimated monthly electricity bill exceeds the targeted amount, they can activate AI Energy Mode through SmartThings app to proactively save energy. With the cycles that work with AI Energy Mode, the BESPOKE AI Washer saves energy usage by up to 70%,[18] the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo saves energy up to 60% on washing and up to 30% on drying.[19] And the dishwasher uses up to 21% less energy with the Pots & Pans program.[20]

Visitors at IFA 2024 ― being held in Berlin from September 6 to 10 ― will be able to see Samsung’s new energy efficient appliances at Samsung booth. The Bespoke Dishwasher is currently available in several European countries and the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is set to launch in select European countries in the fourth quarter this year. And the BESPOKE AI Washer will roll out in different European countries early next year.
