Samsung Malaysia Electronics (“Samsung Malaysia”) is proud to announce the return of the sixth edition of the ‘Samsung Solve for Tomorrow (SFT) 2024’ , a youth competition designed to inspire young minds to develop problem-solving skills and address challenges in their communities with the power of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). With the nationwide theme ‘Start with Can’, Malaysian students aged 13 to 15 are once again invited to identify local pressing issues and create innovative solutions with STEM to make a positive change and stand a chance to win a share worth up to RM 80,000 in technology and classroom supplies!

This initiative is a collaborative effort between Samsung Malaysia and Universiti Malaya to instill early interest and skills in STEM in hopes of equipping the next generation with the necessary skill sets needed to thrive and excel when they enter into the workforce in the near future. This aligns with the nation’s vision of building a sustainable STEM talent pool to propel Malaysia towards its goal of becoming a high-tech nation by 2030.

Dato’ Roh Jae Yeol, Director of Corporate Affairs at Samsung Malaysia, said, “Generation Alpha has been immersed in a tech-savvy world, fostering great creativity and boldness in exploring and pioneering innovation. This trend aligns with future work demands in fields like artificial intelligence, IoT and advanced technologies. At Samsung, we believe young minds can overcome their communities’ challenges through innovation, dedication, and passion. Samsung SFT is more than a competition; it serves as a catalyst, empowering all Malaysian youths to realise their capabilities and transform their ideas into tangible solutions that contribute to a better future.”

“We welcome all Malaysian youth innovators to break through language barriers and showcase their creativity in this competition. We have full faith that these young minds can change the world. As educators, we are responsible for preparing them to navigate the digital frontier and make positive changes,” shared Ir. Dr. Mas Sahidayana Mohktar, Director of Universiti Malaya’s STEM Centre. “This initiative also marks our pivotal commitment to fostering early-stage STEM education, a critical step in cultivating the talent pool that will drive our nation’s economic development.”

Samsung SFT 2024 competition provides an opportunity for secondary students nationwide to showcase their innovative ideas by addressing real-world problems using STEM principles in a 800-word submission. Entries will be evaluated by Samsung Malaysia and Universiti Malaya based on various criteria such as issue relevance, creativity, feasibility, STEM application, and presentation of innovative solutions. The top 10 teams will advance to the next round, where they will enhance and present their ideas.

The shortlisted entries for Samsung SFT 2024 competition will be revealed on the program’s website in October 2024. Selected participants will benefit from mentorship and guidance to refine their ideas and develop prototypes during a Design to Win Workshop.

Throughout Samsung’s history, we have made it our mission to devote our talent and technology in creating innovative products and services that contribute to the betterment of global society. As a global leader in technology, we also have a responsibility to leverage our innovations, skill and knowledge to bridge the widening digital divide and give more youths the opportunity to reap the benefits of digitalization.

Within the Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) region, we are seeing rapid growth in the digital economy. This is fueled by factors such as increasing mobile penetration and social media usage, a booming e-commerce market, strong government push towards digitalization, and importantly, a population of young digital natives.

Youths are the future drivers for the region, both as consumers and innovators. As we celebrate Samsung Electronics’ 54th anniversary globally on November 1st, we remain committed to empowering our youth to meet the demands of the ever-evolving world, while at the same time, uplifting communities across the SEAO region.

Global programs with local impact

In the spirit of co-prosperity, we are committed to doing our part as a socially and environmentally responsible corporate citizen in the communities that we are in, and as champions of innovation, we continually push ourselves to do better in inspiring the next generation through technology. This year, we are excited to see Solve for Tomorrow (SFT), our global flagship STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) – based student competition, expand to more markets in SEAO, including Indonesia and the Philippines. SFT is also making headway in the Pacific Islands, with Samoa and Tonga kick-starting local editions for the very first time in August this year.

▲ More than 500 students in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, participated in a SFT workshop in June 2023.

The 2023 edition of SFT is still ongoing in several SEAO markets, but we are already seeing massive momentum in the region, with projects covering creative solutions to address real-life challenges in a variety of themes including environment and sustainability, learning and education, wellness, and healthcare, and more. Beyond the technical competition element, our young participants also receive training in soft skills required for the future workforce, including the 4Cs of 21st Century Skills – Communication, Collaboration, Critical thinking, and Creativity.

We estimate that over 110,000 students and over 1,000 schools are benefiting from this program so far this year, through the competition, online and offline workshops, and other SFT-related activities.

▲ For the 2021 edition of Solve for Tomorrow in Australia, students were encouraged to create fun videos that presented social issues of personal relevance while highlighting STEM-based solutions. Tasmania-based Meg Phillips emerged as the overall winner, driven by her passion for animal conservation, with an RFID-based system to warn animals of approaching cars, with the aim of reducing wildlife casualties, as well as to keep drivers safe.

Recently, Samsung New Zealand announced its SFT 2023 winners. I am especially heartened by the winning submissions that are the embodiment of why we continue to dedicate our efforts for communities through this program. For example, 12-year old Thomas Costar’s hydro turbine mechanism that helps to generate electricity through household drainage systems – the scientific approach that he took is a great example of perseverance and design thinking.

▲ Samsung Innovation Campus participants in Cambodia working diligently under the guidance of mentors.

Beyond encouraging innovative thinking with SFT, we also want to empower the next generation with practical skills needed for success in an increasingly digital world. This is where Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) comes into play. Through SIC, we want to help youth develop real-world skills in the areas of AI, IoT, big data, and coding through formalized training programs, alongside other activities like Innovation Hackathons and IoT Bootcamps.

Since first launching in Indonesia and Vietnam in 2019, we continue to ramp up our work in SEAO. This year, we are excited to add Cambodia and Laos to the program roster. To date, we estimate that over 8,000 students are participating in the program from 135 schools across Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, along with significant interest from a number of national universities too. We are encouraged by the incredibly positive feedback received from students on how the SIC program has helped change their perspectives towards data science, as well as helping them better navigate their education journey.

We are immensely appreciative and humbled by all the cooperation, support, and the sharing of information and learnings from the various governmental agencies and educational organizations who have graciously partnered with us on this journey. These partnerships ensure that the local editions are tailored for the unique education needs of each community, enhancing the learning experience for students, and amplify the program’s impact across the region by increasing awareness of it and supporting its rollout in the markets.

There is no doubt that having passion for education played a significant role in the remarkable success that we have achieved in the spirit of co-creation with initiatives like SFT and SIC.

As an added plus, the activation of programs like SFT and SIC created more opportunities for Samsung to further contribute to local communities and education. For example, this year in Indonesia, we signed two agreements, one is with the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Republic Indonesia to roll out the ‘Samsung Digital for Indonesia’ program in support of the local smart madrasah program, and the other one with the Institute of Technology Bandung for developing digital technology on sustainable environmental conservation.

Looking to the Next 54 Years and Beyond

Samsung Malaysia Electronics announced the launch of ‘Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2023’, a youth competition between secondary school students that brings compassion, education, and technology together. The competition aims to inspire students to be innovators and problem-solvers who create solutions to address issues faced by society. By encouraging the use of technology, the competition empowers students to make a positive impact and contribute to society.

As innovation is becoming increasingly important in our society, there is a growing need to prepare future generations with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a research-driven world. Recognising the importance of enhancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in our country, Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow 2023 aligns with the nation’s strong emphasis on the importance of higher education, providing a platform for secondary school students to engage in problem-solving and innovation, the competition supports and reinforces the nation’s commitment to advancing education and preparing the next generation for a successful future.

Dato’ Roh Jae Yeol, Director of Corporate Affairs at Samsung Malaysia Electronics, said, “Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow program serves as a beacon of inspiration, fostering practical STEM education on a national scale. By making education relatable, accessible, and enjoyable, the program strives to empower and equip young minds with the essential skills to build a brighter future. Through the provision of tools, resources, and hands-on experiences, the initiative also seeks to ignite a genuine interest in STEM subjects, nurturing a generation of innovative thinkers and problem solvers who will play a pivotal role in shaping a brighter tomorrow.”

Samsung Malaysia’s Solve for Tomorrow 2023 is a collaborative effort between Samsung Malaysia and Universiti Malaya’s STEM Centre, emphasizing research, analysis, and teamwork. This competition is specifically designed for Form 1 and Form 2 students from all national secondary schools in the country, aiming to enhance their learning experience through engaging in STEM activities. Recognizing the importance of hands-on learning, the program strives to instil a passion for STEM subjects in students, enabling them to become active contributors to society and agents of positive change.

This year’s Solve for Tomorrow competition, themed ‘Start with Can’, aims to harness the power within each participant and instil confidence in their abilities to believe in themselves, build passion for problem-solving, and motivate them to think innovatively. By encouraging students to tap into their potential, the competition seeks to inspire them to make a lasting impact on society and drive positive change through the creation of impactful solutions for the challenges of tomorrow.

“The partnership between Universiti Malaya’s STEM Centre and Samsung Malaysia equips future leaders with vital skills, fostering innovation and digital literacy to drive a STEM-based economy. This collaboration is instrumental in cultivating an advanced nation, addressing complexities and supporting impactful solutions. By combining our expertise, we can empower youth to think innovatively, creating a sustainable and better world,” said Ir. Dr Mas Sahidayana Mohktar, Director of Universiti Malaya STEM Centre.

The focus for 2023 themes are three critical social issues: ‘Education & Learning’, ‘Environmental & Sustainability’, and ‘Health & Well-Being’. By prioritizing these pressing concerns, the competition aims to stimulate critical thinking among students and inspire them to develop innovative solutions that can bring about positive societal change.

‘Education & Learning’ theme addresses barriers and challenges to equal educational opportunities. By encouraging students to think creatively, the competition empowers them to enhance access, quality, and inclusivity in education, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive system.

‘Environmental & Sustainability’ remains a top priority, emphasising the urgent need to protect our planet. The competition motivates students to generate innovative ideas and initiatives that promote sustainable practices, conservation, and environmental responsibility, empowering them to be catalysts for positive change and advocates for a more sustainable future.

‘Health & Well-Being’ as a social concern in 2023 highlights the significance of promoting physical and mental well-being in communities. The competition inspires students to explore innovative approaches for addressing health issues, improving healthcare accessibility, and promoting healthy lifestyles, aiming to cultivate student-led initiatives that positively impact individuals and communities, leading to a healthier and more resilient society.

By addressing these three critical social issues, Samsung Malaysia’s Solve for Tomorrow program in 2023 aims to empower students to become active contributors in shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and healthier future for their communities and beyond.

Solve for Tomorrow 2023 requires participants to present an idea and innovative solutions that address one of the three themes, all of which play a crucial role in our nation’s progress. Each group of three students will need to describe the problem they want to solve and explain how STEM can be applied to address this problem in 1000 words. Samsung Malaysia and Universiti Malaya will assess the entries based on several criteria, such as issue relevance, creativity, feasibility of ideas, application of STEM, and presentation of innovative solutions.

The shortlisted entries will be announced on Samsung Malaysia’s Solve for Tomorrow website in September. The shortlisted participants will receive assistance from mentors and experts to enhance and create prototypes of their ideas at a Design to Win Workshop.

The grand prize-winning team, Team Dzalis Smart Ino from SMK Dato’ Razali Ismail developed a sustainable, solar-powered thermos called FOODDECK to store food in a suitable environment through an application in the efforts of keeping food bacteria-free and to prevent further wastage. The idea came about from watching food stall vendors not being able to store their food in a hygienic manner and many troubled individuals who enjoy cooking meals but not having sufficient space to store the leftovers. The thermos is designed not only to have the ability to retain heat but to also store food in cold conditions. The team comprises of Jasqmin, Nur Aim Umairah and Putera Ahmad Danish Zaquan under the guidance of the teacher, Che Norhamira bt. Che Mohd.

The 1st runner-up Team Tropbotz from SMK Tropicana the consolation prize winners created a smart pet cage called the IoT Pet Guardian designed to monitor, feed and care for the well-being of your pets. It provides smart solutions for a pet owners’ peace of mind. Integrated with IoT to monitor and receive data on the temperature in the pet house, the cage will be programmed to behave as if the owners never left the house by opening the toilet trapdoor at a programmed timing, dispensing food in the bowl and pumping water into its water tray. The team comprises of Chua Wei Ming, Tee Yi Zhe and Muhammad Aqil guided by their teacher, Khor Puay Puay.

Mental health has become one of the most talked about topics these past couple of years. The 2nd runner-up Team NewGen Leaders from SMK Seri Bintang Utara have created a mental-health focused mobile application called SimplySmile with an AI chatbot that analyses emotions and biometrics; monitored through Samsung Health. SimplySmile plays the role of having that constant friend with you no matter where you are. Involving the concept of subconsciously pushing positive notes and encouraging quotes is a start to change the user’s mood and behaviour from negative to positive in no time! The team is made up of Chuah Yee Jia, Chuah Yee En and Ahmad Jazeel under the assistance from their teacher, Lee Saw Im.

Team Fishballz from SMK Taman Desa developed a mobile application led by an AI assistant to help guide students with their studies. There are a majority of students facing issues of not being able to keep up with the lessons in their classes and when the pandemic hit in 2020, it just got worst. Students were then forced to attend classes online which made it even more difficult for them to concentrate with all the surrounding distractions. The application includes a chat function where students from different locations and backgrounds can chat and send each other gifts earned by completing virtual homework. The team includes Chu Ting Ern, Chloe Yew Xiao Shuen and Priscilla Chong Ai Ling under the direction of the teacher, Nurul Huda bt. Che Hamzah.

The usage of non-renewable energy resources has been the main contributor to global warming and climate change. This issue raised numerous concerns such as the rising of sea level, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and detrimental pollution to the environment due to carbon emission. Consolation prize winners, Team The Green Scientists from SMK (L) Methodist Sentul, came up with a structure of solar panels called Solar Flower, designed to follow the sun. Its light sensors detect the highest ambient light intensity, allowing for the most efficient conversion of energy into power. The team includes Vassenthen, Viswa Visagan and Alan Qing Zhen led by their teacher, Juraidi b. Mat.

The anticipated competition – Solve for Tomorrow is BACK for the 3rd time in a row this year. Students in Form 1 & 2 can NOW register and submit their applications till 23 September. All they need is to describe an issue and provide STEM solutions across three main themes – Education & Learning, Sustainability & Environment and Health & Well-being to make that first step to being the changemaker this country needs.

Being a CHANGEMAKER takes a lot of initiative, creativity and forward thinking and who better to do so than the youths of TODAY! Supporting the theme this year, Samsung Malaysia engaged 4 inspirational leaders – Norhailmi Abdul Mutalib, Cheryl Ann Fernando, Vinesh Sinha and Rocyie Wong – who have played a prominent STEM role in Malaysia.

Our inspiring leaders who were carefully selected have one thing in common – THEIR PASSION. Their individual passion will have the ability to ignite the interest in our students to rise to the occasion in accomplishing their project ideas. Our leaders will be the guiding light for our students, turning them towards the right direction in any selected theme of their choice to make this world a better place for the next generation.

Our leaders, professional experts vigorously involved in numerous initiatives, will be working alongside our students to guide them throughout their ideation process and project outcomes. With their real-world experience, they would be able to motivate, influence and communicate their knowledge to our students to take on bold missions in wanting to change the world.

Let’s hear what our leaders have to say:

“STEM is something close to my heart as I became a Science teacher myself. Science has always been THAT subject that made me question everything. When the world was in lockdown, I had to do what it takes to retain the excitement and interest in their education – and my journey on TikTok took off. I modified my approach to educate not only my students, but Malaysians at large.” – Norhailmi Abdul Mutalib, High School Science Master

“I signed up with Teach for Malaysia and embarked on a journey which gave me a new perspective on education in Malaysia. Teaching English at a rural secondary school led me to bigger ventures in improving Malaysia’s education system. I currently helm the PEMIMPIN GSL; an initiative seeking to empower Malaysian school leaders to lead positive school transformation.
“My adventure started through the development of science behind taking oil waste from food industries in Malaysia and transforming them into biofuels to reduce carbon emissions. This evolution and with recent technology led me to being the recipient of Forbes 30 Under 30 – Asia – Industry, Manufacturing & Energy award in 2018. This proves that perseverance goes a long way and I hope it would inspire the next group of individuals to thrive in the STEM space.” – Vinesh Sinha, CEO & Founder of FatHopes Energy

COVID-19 has catalyzed an acceleration of our digital lives. In a COVID-normalized world, evolving needs and changes in lifestyles have led today’s consumers to seek unique digital experiences that combine both convenience and customization.

As 2022 marks the gradual reopening of borders and resumption of economic activities, we – as a global leader in technology – are committed to continue putting users at the heart of our business and laying the groundwork for a new digital future for our consumers, partners and everyone in the region.

Enabling smarter digital lives

With growing expectations for digital devices and services to work seamlessly together to fit individual lifestyles, preferences and needs, we have sharpened our focus on providing people-first products and services that better serve these post-pandemic expectations of consumers and organizations.

Homes are now multifunctional spaces, where customizable and intelligent technologies come together to create productive workplaces, home gyms and entertainment hubs – all within the same space. Our ecosystem of connected smart devices such as the Galaxy smartphones, Smart Monitors, and TVs have become even more important tools for productivity and collaboration today. Meanwhile, our SmartThings app and smart home appliances enable busy individuals to automate house chores seamlessly from their Galaxy smartphones.

To enable truly seamless and personalized experiences, we created an open and inclusive ecosystem that allows users to integrate their Samsung devices with favorite products from our partners, offering opportunities for creativity and consumers with endless possibilities.

Creating new customer journeys

The past two years have also spurred us to rethink how we can serve our customers better, while making our devices and services more accessible. COVID-19 has accelerated e-commerce growth, making online shopping a necessity. Meanwhile, the increasingly global outlook and entrenched social sharing habits of consumers have spurred our foray into new brand and retail experiences.

To that end, we have doubled down on efforts to expand and improve our retail channels and experiences. Today, our devices can be experienced and purchased directly from Samsung online stores, through online shopping partners, and even live commerce channels.

We have also invested in new and immersive ways for customers to experience our products online and offline. For example, we have launched augmented reality capabilities to better imagine how our home appliances can fit into homes. This will provide consumers the confidence to purchase our products online and help homeowners who have visited our retail showrooms with space planning.

Empowering our younger generation

Recognizing the importance of youth in the Southeast Asia & Oceania (SEAO), which is home to more than half of the world’s young people[1], we have furthered our efforts in understanding and catering to their values, aspirations and needs. Being digital natives who grew up with the internet, these young people are optimizing connected devices and driving online services to shape the digital economy, both as consumers and innovators.

As a champion of innovation, we want to do more in empowering the next generation through our technologies and initiatives. To achieve this, we are running several programs to provide the necessary tools that help to optimize opportunities for youths, and tap into their collective energies as well as insights to shape our products and services.

For example, our team of Future Generation Lab members, consisting of our young employees, actively develop new enticing marketing content, and collaborations to better engage with millennial and Gen Z consumers. We also run the Samsung Innovation Campus, which provides youth with training in information and communications technology skills and soft skills, as well as Solve for Tomorrow, a competition that encourages students to create tangible solutions that can solve societal issues – reaching more than 80,000 students in SEAO in 2021.

Here at Samsung Electronics Southeast Asia and Oceania, we constantly strive to be the trusted brand in creating new experiences for work, play, learning, and everything in between. For the rest of 2022 and beyond, we will continue to push our boundaries and grasp new opportunities, working closely with partners to empower the communities that we operate in.

Kuala Lumpur, 23 August 2022 – Samsung Malaysia Electronics today announced the launch of its annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition which challenges Malaysian students from Form 1 & 2 to propose creative solutions to solve challenges of national importance using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic). Now through 23 September 2022, students from national schools across the country can participate in the competition by completing three questions in the submission form that ask them to address an issue in their community and their plans to inspire real-world change. The competition will culminate in a Finale Presentation & Prize-Giving Ceremony in December.

The theme for this year’s Solve for Tomorrow competition is ‘CHANGEMAKERS’. The chosen CHANGEMAKERS will be tasked to create excitement and to spark passion around STEM by focusing on the three themes selected to be spotlighted for this year.

The Solve for Tomorrow competition has been carried out in partnership with Universiti Malaya’s STEM Centre since 2020. This year, the Solve for Tomorrow competition will collaborate with the university once again with the Ministry of Education (MoE), to bring invaluable expertise rooted in the Malaysian STEM ecosystem and the National Education Policy.

Supporting the competition from end to end, the centre will assist in helping participants develop their ideas around three social issues – ‘Education & Learning’, ‘Sustainability & Environment’ and ‘Health & Well-being; into solutions that will support the local communities and eventually, support the national agenda.

“The Solve for Tomorrow contest was founded globally more than a decade ago as an environmental program. It has then evolved tremendously as we continue to experience growth in innovation. In Malaysia, we want to create a platform for the younger generation to identify and discuss how we can promote meaningful changes by incorporating STEM. In the last two years, we have seen spectacular ideas that have emerged from the minds of young Malaysians, and we look forward to seeing more ideas this year that will ignite a lasting impact in society,” said Dato’ Roh Jae Yeol, Director of Corporate Affairs, Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

Ir. Dr Mas Sahidayana Mohktar, Head of Universiti Malaya STEM Centre, said, “This partnership builds on the Universiti Malaya’s STEM Centre drive to empower future talents with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills which aligns with the institute’s mission to nurture our leaders of tomorrow. The initiative allows students to apply their learnings and test their innovation capabilities under the guidance of technology and education experts. Our collaboration with Samsung Malaysia since 2020 signifies our determination to continuously provide access to digital technology and skills for our youth.”
