We are living through a defining moment in history. Technology has become a central force in our daily lives like never before, and the pace of innovation and change is truly extraordinary. In this rapidly evolving world, the human element—our thoughts, emotions, aspirations, and needs—matters more than ever. Even as technology takes the lead, we believe our greatest strength lies in empathy and care.

As designers, our mission goes beyond creating innovative products. We aim to elevate people’s lives—to design tools and experiences that help them live better, longer, and more meaningfully, by taming technology in service of humanity.

Samsung Electronics is a worldwide leader in tech and already plays an essential role in the lives of billions around the globe. Through our products, we help you clean your home, wash your clothes and dishes, preserve your food, store your memories, stay entertained, stay connected, and express yourself—whether at home, on the move, or in public spaces. This reach is both a tremendous privilege and, in the age of AI and accelerated technological change, an incredible opportunity and an immense responsibility.

That sense of purpose is what inspired me to join Samsung this year, after more than two decades as a designer and business leader across industries and cultures. I was drawn by the possibility to help reimagine the relationship between people and technology—putting humans at the heart of our product universe, to create a world where innovation truly supports and enhances our lives, unlocking, amplifying and elevating, the human side of technology.

Rewriting the Code of a Design-driven Company

To me, design is far more than a product or a user interface. It’s more than the interplay of form and function. I like to define design as the art of dreaming, crafting and taking to life distinctive solutions, meaningful experiences and authentic stories that deeply resonate with people’s needs and aspirations. In this sense, form and function follow meaning. Design becomes a force for purposeful innovation—one that begins and ends with people.

Across Samsung’s product portfolio, design serves as a language—one that understands people and interprets the complexity of the world around us. It has the power to humanize technology, transforming algorithms into emotion, features into feelings. In a time of accelerating complexity, design is how we restore clarity and foster deeper connections—with ourselves, our cultures, and our lives.

Samsung’s commitment to design thinking dates back to 1996, when it declared the “Year of Design Revolution.” That year marked a turning point, with design officially recognized as a core strategic asset. With a “human-centered design philosophy” at its heart, Samsung laid the foundation for a design ethos that continues to evolve and grow.

Now, in the era of AI, our challenge is to build upon that legacy—to amplify its intent, refine its spirit, and redefine what design means in a new cultural and technological landscape. Products can be copied, but a design philosophy—its purpose and point of view—cannot be replicated. This is why culture matters. For individuals and for organizations alike, consistency, authentic creativity, and genuine care at every touchpoint are what set great companies apart.

A New Challenge to Everyday Innovation

Today, Samsung innovations are already transforming everyday life. Robot vacuum cleaners quietly maintain our homes. Smartwatches provide real-time insights into our health. Intelligent appliances, from washing machines to dishwashers, offer greater efficiency, performance, and ease of use. Smart refrigerators adapt to our habits to keep food fresher for longer. Our screens deliver breathtaking visuals, our audio systems fill rooms with immersive soundscapes, and our smartphones, tablets, and wearables keep us connected through intuitive design and purposeful features.

All of this is remarkable. Yet, the real frontier lies in something greater: the seamless integration of all these devices into a coherent, human-centered journey. We’re not just designing individual products—we’re designing an ecosystem of experiences. We’re redefining what “smart” really means by infusing technology with empathy, meaning, and emotional resonance.

Samsung’s design now goes beyond the object. It places thoughtful connections, insightful information, and intentional emotions at the center. Through a cohesive design experience across our entire ecosystem—from mobile to TV to home appliances—we’re committed to enriching every interaction.

Our vision is a future where design brings warmth to innovation, and where technology helps us not only do more—but live longer, live better, and live more connected, and more meaningfully, creating an empathetic layer between people and their environments. This personal field of emotionally attuned, physiologically aware, and ethically governed technologies interconnects to form constellations of care—enabling shared rhythms and deeper connection across the home, family, and community.

The Future Is Emotional, Meaningful, Connected Intelligence

The next frontier of smart technology must offer more than just functionality. With Samsung’s advancements in AI, empowered by hardware and software, we are unlocking a new dimension of emotional intelligence—where technology doesn’t just work for us, but resonates with us.

What excites me most about AI in product design is how it enables us to listen, learn, and craft experiences that feel deeply personal. As intelligence becomes ambient—woven seamlessly into our everyday devices—design takes on a greater responsibility: to ensure that intelligence feels warm, human, and caring. We’re shifting from devices that demand our attention to those that pay attention, anticipating needs, adapting preferences, and forming meaningful relationships with users.

We’re envisioning an ecosystem where intelligence isn’t confined to one device, but exists around you—quiet, empathetic, always present when needed, and gracefully invisible when not. Samsung’s holistic approach to AI spans across the entire ecosystem—from smartphones to TVs, wearables to home appliances—transforming each product into a thoughtful companion in your daily life.

Imagine a TV that mirrors your mood. A refrigerator that understands your dietary goals. A watch or ring that knows when you need rest, and gently guides you toward better mental and physical wellbeing. This is not just innovation—it’s a design philosophy where intelligence surrounds you, senses you, learns from you, and ultimately adapts to serve you better. Each product becomes part of a larger, unified story, grounded in empathy, awareness, and care.

Design as a Force for Meaning – And for a Better Tomorrow

Technology will always continue to evolve. But what truly matters is the meaning it brings—to individuals and to society. At Samsung, we innovate not just because we can, but because we care. It starts with a sincere commitment to people and a deep sense of responsibility for the impact we create.

What has always inspired me about Samsung is its belief in openness—not just as a platform strategy, but as a cultural principle. Openness to collaboration. Openness to bold, unconventional ideas. Openness to meeting people where they are. This spirit of openness removes barriers, fuels connection, and sets the stage for truly meaningful innovation.

These are the values that have shaped my career and the principles I believe will drive our industry forward. They reflect a shared mission: to build technology that enriches human life, with empathy at its core.

Through our love for humanity and our clear vision for the future, we invite you to join us on this journey—one shaped by Samsung Design, and guided by purpose, care, and imagination.

Responsibility is an important part of technology – both in creating and using it – and one aspect Samsung Electronics continues to focus on is safe use of technology while in traffic. As the Dutch government launched “MONO: Undisturbed,” a campaign to reduce the use of smartphones in traffic, last week, Samsung Electronics joined the efforts with the In-Traffic Reply app it announced last year.

It is well known that it is dangerous to operate a smartphone while driving. However, research shows that two thirds of the Dutch feel pressured to respond immediately to messages – even when behind the wheel – and more than 70% of the people aged between 15 and 24 still call or send messages with their phones while in traffic, a quarter check their social media feed and almost one in five reply to a message while they drive.

In-Traffic Reply detects when you are behind the wheel or on your bike and automatically answers all incoming messages with your pre-determined personalized message while you’re driving. More than 100,000 Dutch people already have In-Traffic Reply on their phone. The focus, this year, is to encourage more people to actively use the solution.

Samsung Electronics, the Dutch government and other partners including ANWB, Veilig Verkeer Nederland and Fietsersbond will continue to support the MONO campaign to raise awareness and promote action against smartphone use while driving.

While majority of us only consider breaking away from the mundane cycle of our 9-5 desk jobs, a group of intrepid millennials are redefining what it means to embrace the present by seizing the proverbial bull by the horns and combining remote working and travel into an enviable lifestyle of exploration. This group, fondly known as digital nomads, are arguably the bravest and most exciting personalities to be associated with because they know exactly what they want to do and how they want to get it done. They are doers and challengers of the norm, and they explore interesting methods to push past barriers to achieve their goals. So what is it that makes the nomadic lifestyle viable? One word: technology.

Yes, while the improvement of internet speed, the appearance of co-working spaces, and the growing acceptance of remote work contracts between individuals and businesses attribute to the rising number of nomadic professionals, it is the advances in technology that make our world ever more interconnected and accessible. Technology isn’t just an enabler, it is the catalyst that rockets these location-independent professionals into a lifestyle of great work-life balance.

What digital nomads appreciate most is mobility – the ability to get things done from anywhere and at any time they see fit. They rely heavily on smartphones, laptops and tablets for work and connectivity purposes; and this boils down to how far a smart device can go to supplement and complement a digital nomad’s life. Where devices are concern, Samsung delivers a unified experience through advanced smartphones such as its flagship Galaxy Note8 and S8/S8+ as well as a series of connected gears that make up a seamless ecosystem to take productivity and communication to the next level.

When it comes to productivity, the S Pen is by far the most versatile tool made up of an intuitive design and powerful functions to make multi-tasking a breeze. For digital nomads, ideas flow at any given time so penning them down quickly is vital. For this, there is the Screen-Off Memo where notes can be written on the screen without unlocking the phone. Work becomes convenient with Screen Write where articles, emails and documents are easily saved as one image and annotations can be added to work files for easy reference. The Scroll Capture feature brings screenshots to the next level as it is able to capture entire web pages (up to 100 pages) into one handy shareable file. Moreover, digital nomads can utilize the Smart Select feature to create GIFs to share with friends on social media.

Supporting the S Pen is the Infinity Display, a large bezel-free screen that allows digital nomads to see more and scroll less, giving them more room to watch, read, work and draw. The Galaxy Note8 and S8/S8+’s Infinity Display is equipped with the Multi Window function where the new App Pair feature helps users create a custom pair of apps on the Edge Panel to simultaneously launch two apps with ease. Now who says you can only do one thing at a time on your smartphone?

Part of living the digital nomad life is to work and travel, so you don’t miss out on the myriad of experiences life has to offer. This is where Samsung presents powerful smartphone cameras in its flagship devices for users to capture moments and milestones. Digital nomads can ditch their bulky cameras and travel light with smartphones like the Galaxy Note8 and S8/S8+ that capture great images, which are just as good as professional cameras. The Dual-Pixel Sensor, wide aperture and fast autofocus of the 12MP F1.7 rear camera work together to create beautiful photographs, even in low-light conditions.

If you think mobile photography just went up a notch, wait until you try the Galaxy dual camera with dual OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). For added creative control, the new Live Focus feature lets users adjust the bokeh effect before and after the photo is taken. In Dual Capture mode, both cameras work simultaneously to capture two separate images – one close-up shot from the telephoto lens and one wide-angle shot that show the entire background – so digital nomads will never have to miss a moment.

For the more focused digital nomad, there is the Samsung DeX for an inclusive mobile desktop experience. Digital nomads will find DeX very useful because it allows them to use their Galaxy Note8 and S8/S8+ as they would with a desktop, by providing a seamless, secure mobile-to-PC transition. Apps within the smartphone itself can be accessed without hassle, and they can even browse the web, send messages and more directly from their phone on a larger display, without having to carry multiple devices or transfer data. It supports keyboard and mouse gestures, allowing the smartphones to function as efficiently as a PC. This way, digital nomads get to do more with little devices on-the-go, and they can still get a lot done in a day.

The popularity of digital nomadism owes itself to the rapid development of modern society; and advances in technology and attitudes could make digital nomadism and remote working not only easier, but also more popular than it already is. Today, a lot of work can be done from anywhere on a smartphone with ease and efficiency, if not more than in a traditional office. Samsung fills the gap by offering the best in smartphone technology, providing digital nomads with the flexibility to multitask and freedom to create, express and document their work-life journey.

Kuala Lumpur, 23 August 2017 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. introduces the Galaxy Note8, the next level Note for people who want to do bigger things. With the Galaxy Note8, consumers get a bigger Infinity Display that fits comfortably in one hand, S Pen to communicate in more personal ways, and Samsung’s best-ever smartphone camera to capture stunning photos. The Galaxy Note8 is designed for the way consumers lead their lives and lean on technology today.

“We appreciate the relentless passion of the Note community. They’ve been a constant inspiration to us and we designed the new Note for them,” said DJ Koh, president of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “From the Infinity Display to the enhanced S Pen and a powerful Dual Camera, the Galaxy Note8 lets people do things they never thought were possible.”

Samsung first introduced the Note series in 2011. Since then, a community of enthusiasts emerged through their affinity for Note’s signature expansive screen and S Pen. According to Samsung market research1, 85 percent of Note users say they’re proud to show off their Note and recommend it to friends, and 75 percent say it’s the best phone they’ve ever had.

Enjoy and Do More on the Infinity Display

The Galaxy Note8 has the biggest screen ever on a Note device, yet its narrow body makes it comfortable to hold in one hand. The 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity Display lets you see more and scroll less. The Galaxy Note8 gives you more room to watch, read and draw—making it the ultimate multitasking smartphone.

Note users have long been able to do more with Multi Window. With the Galaxy Note8, the new App Pair feature lets you create a custom pair of apps on the Edge Panel and simultaneously launch two apps with ease. Watch a video while messaging your friends or dial into a conference call with the number and agenda in front of you2.

A New Way to Communicate with the S Pen

Since its introduction, the S Pen has been one of the Note’s defining features. With the Galaxy Note8, the enhanced S Pen unlocks entirely new ways to write, draw, and interact with the phone and communicate with friends. It has a finer tip, improved pressure sensitivity3, and features that enable users to express themselves in ways that no other stylus or smartphone ever has.

When communicating with text just isn’t enough, Live Message allows you to reveal your unique personality and tell expressive stories. With the Galaxy Note8, you can now share animated texts or drawings across platforms that support animated GIFs 4. It’s a whole new way to communicate with the S Pen—adding lively and emotional connections that bring your messages to life.

The Always On Display allows Galaxy users to stay on top of their notifications without unlocking their phone. And with the Galaxy Note8, it’s even more powerful. Screen off memo allows you to take up to one-hundred pages of notes as soon as you remove the S Pen, pin notes to the Always On Display and make edits directly from the Always On Display.

For overseas travels or when you come across a website in a foreign language, the improved S Pen Translate feature lets you hover over text to quickly translate not only individual words, but entire sentences in up to 71 languages, and instantly convert units and foreign currencies.

Better Pictures with Galaxy Note8’s Best-in-Class Camera

For most consumers, one of the things they look for when purchasing a new device is the camera. Samsung set the standard for smartphone cameras and with the Galaxy Note8, we’re delivering our most powerful smartphone camera yet.

The Galaxy Note8 is the first smartphone with two 12MP rear cameras with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) on both the wide-angle and telephoto lenses. Whether you’re exploring a new city or running around your backyard, OIS lets you capture sharper images.

For more advanced photo-taking, the Galaxy Note8’s Live Focus feature lets you control the depth of field by allowing you to adjust the bokeh effect in preview mode and after you take the photo.

In Dual Capture mode, both rear cameras take two pictures simultaneously and allow you to save both images; one close-up shot from the telephoto lens and one wide-angle shot that shows the entire background.

The wide-angle lens has a Dual Pixel sensor with rapid Auto Focus, so you can capture sharper, clearer shots even in low-light environments. The Galaxy Note8 is also equipped with an industry-leading 8MP Smart Auto Focus front-facing camera for sharp selfies and video chats.

Galaxy of Features and Services

The Galaxy Note8 is built on the Galaxy legacy—a collection of unique features and capabilities that, together, have redefined the mobile experience:

Water and Dust Resistance: Four years ago, Samsung introduced the first Galaxy device with water resistance. And today, you can take your Note almost anywhere you want with water and dust resistance (IP685) on the device and the S Pen. You can write even when the display is wet.

Fast Wireless Charging: Two years ago, Samsung introduced the first Galaxy device with wireless charging. The Galaxy Note8 supports the most advanced wireless charging capabilities yet, so you can get a quick, convenient charge6 without having to mess around with ports or wires.

Security: The Galaxy Note8 offers a choice of biometric authentication options—including iris and fingerprint scanning. Samsung Knox7 provides defense-grade security at the hardware and software layers and with Secure Folder, keeps your personal and professional data separate.

Powerful Performance: With 6GB RAM, a 10nm processor, and expandable memory (up to 256GB), you have the power you need to browse, stream, play games, and multitask.

Innovative Mobile Experiences: Samsung DeX enables a desktop experience, powered by your phone. You can keep your files on your device, conduct work on the go, and use Samsung DeX when you need an even bigger screen. The Galaxy Note8 includes Bixby8, a smarter way to use your phone; it learns from you, improves over time, and helps you get more done.

Mobile Performance, Productivity and Security for Businesses

The Galaxy Note8 takes business innovation to the next level with advanced features that improve performance, productivity and security for a wide range of industries, simplifying how work gets done:

Enhanced S Pen for Business: The S Pen lets professionals do what other smartphones can’t, like discreetly taking notes in Screen off memo or quickly annotating documents and photos.

Non-Contact Authentication: The Galaxy Note8 offers iris scanning for professionals—for example, professionals in the health care, construction, or public safety sectors who may find themselves in a position where they need to unlock their phones without having to swipe or scan a fingerprint.

Enhanced DeX Capabilities: The Galaxy Note8 powers Samsung DeX for those who need to extend their simple mobile experience seamlessly to the desktop —whether they’re in the field, at the office or at home.

Our Continued Commitment to Safety

Samsung continues to uphold its commitment to lead the industry in battery safety. The Galaxy Note8’s battery has undergone Samsung’s 8-Point Battery Safety Check—the most rigorous in the industry.

“We have been closely working with Samsung to make meaningful advancements in the science of smartphone quality and safety evaluation. As a result, the Galaxy Note8 has successfully completed a rigorous series of device and battery safety compatibility test protocols. We look forward to maintaining our strategic relationship with Samsung and helping ensure device safety for all consumers.” said Sajeev Jesudas, President, UL International.

The Galaxy Note8 will be available starting in mid-September and will be offered in Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Maple Gold and Deepsea Blue9.
