EduHive from Malacca, comprising students aged 15 years, emerged as the champion of Samsung Solve for Tomorrow (SFT) 2025, triumphing over four other finalist teams with their innovative project, Scabraile.

In collaboration with Universiti Malaya, the 2025 edition, themed “Time to take CHARGE, Start with CAN”, continued to empower Malaysian students aged 13 to 15 to transform Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) knowledge into real-world impact. Spanning four months, the competition brought together 53 teams and 210 students from across the nation, united by a shared goal of creating innovative, community-driven solutions.

The Grand Finale was held on 6 December at M World Hotel, where the top five finalist teams, who had advanced to compete for RM117,000 worth of Samsung products, showcased their STEM prototypes before a panel of judges.

The winning projects were recognised for their creativity, problem-solving, and strong STEM application.

• First place went to EduHive from SMK Tinggi Perempuan Melaka for their project Scabraile, taking home Samsung products worth RM44,000.
• Second place was awarded to Potassium Boost from Sekolah Menengah Sri KDU for TempTeddy, earning Samsung products worth RM30,000.
• Third place went to The Interceptor’s Eye from SMJK Kwang Hua, earning Samsung products worth RM23,000.
• Fourth and fifth places went to Coding Chaos from SMK Bukit Jambul and Evoxis from Sekolah Agama Menengah Bestari for their projects Smart Leafvision and Neutroxis Organ Kit, receiving Samsung products worth RM12,000 and RM8,000, respectively.

The SFT competition continues to encourage young Malaysians to pursue STEM and turn their ideas into real-world impact. Through the guidance of Universiti Malaya, students are empowered to grow their potential while creating solutions that help build stronger, more resilient communities.

Malaysia’s young innovators are one step closer to transforming their ideas into reality as the Top 10 semi-finalist team of Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2025 wrapped up the Design Thinking Workshop (DTW) held recently at Universiti Malaya. 

The workshop served as an intensive mentoring and refinement phase, where participants received hands-on guidance from academic and industry experts to sharpen their ideas and enhance their impact on local communities. From a sustainable tree health monitoring tool to an AI-powered posture monitoring app and even sustainable shoes that generate electricity from our daily steps, the ideas reflected the creativity and social awareness of Malaysia’s future changemakers.

Following the workshop, all teams have submitted their refined ideas for evaluation, and the judges are now in the process of selecting the Top 5 finalists who will advance to the Grand Finale. On 6 December, the shortlisted teams will showcase their innovations and compete for the championship title.

In collaboration with Universiti Malaya, SFT 2025 is part of Samsung’s global youth education and innovation campaign. It encourages Malaysian students to apply STEM knowledge and creative problem-solving skills to address the pressing issues in their communities.  This year’s competition invites participants to explore one of the four key themes, including environmental sustainability through technology, social change via sport and tech, health and wellbeing or education and learning. The campaign comes at a crucial time, as the country faces a growing talent outflow, with over 1.8 million Malaysians seeking better opportunities abroad.^[1] By nurturing homegrown innovation and digital literacy, Samsung SFT 2025 supports the national agenda outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Samsung SFT 2025 invites secondary school students across Malaysia to submit an 800-word proposal showcasing innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Students must base their ideas on one of the four key themes: environmental sustainability through technology, social change via sport and tech, health and wellbeing, or education and learning. Submissions will be evaluated by Samsung Malaysia and Universiti Malaya based on key criteria including issue relevance, creativity, feasibility, STEM application and overall presentation.

The top 10 teams will advance to the next stage, where they will further develop and present their ideas. Shortlisted entries will be notified via email and feature on the program’s official website in October 2025. The 10 teams will then be introduced to their mentors in the Design to Win Workshop, where they will receive guidance and support throughout the competition to help refine their concepts and build working prototypes.

The winners will be determined through a competitive pitching process in December 2025. Prizes include:

Team Terralnnovators from Johor, made up of three 15-year-old students, has been crowned the winner of the sixth edition of Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2024 (SFT), after beating four finalist teams.

In partnership with Universiti Malaya, the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow program, themed Start with Can, empowers young students aged 13 to 15 to tackle pressing local issues through innovative solutions that drive positive change in their communities. By applying the knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), students are encouraged to think critically and creatively. The four-month-long competition received an overwhelming response across Malaysia, totaling 115 teams and more than 300 students participating, striving to deliver the most innovative solutions.

The SFT 2024 competition concluded on 7 December in Kuala Lumpur with a thrilling finale, where all teams enthusiastically presented their STEM prototypes in hopes of winning the first prize. Accessible Recycling – Eco Pulse by Team Terralnnovators from SMK Sultan Ismail

Eco Pulse is an AI-driven image recognition app designed to streamline the recycling process. Powered by advanced data science and algorithms, it estimates the value and weight of recyclable items with precision. They received Samsung products worth up to RM28,000.

Second Prize:

Animal Conservation – Elephant-Friendly Farm Alarm System by Team A Miso Soup from Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School

Equipped with motion sensors with Arduino or Raspberry Pi, the Elephant-Friendly Farm Alarm System is able to detect nearby elephants or trespassers, protecting the endangered Borneo Pygmy Elephants. They received Samsung products worth up to RM24,000.

Third Prize:

Environmental Protection – Bioethanol from Cassava Roots by Team Eagle Young Innovators from St. John’s Institution Kuala Lumpur

Bioethanol derived from cassava roots offers an eco-friendly alternative to conventional cleaning, agriculture, and medical products, promoting a healthier environment and improved human care. They received Samsung products worth up to RM19,000.

Fourth Prize:

Renewable Energy – Piezoelectric Tiles by Team The Visionaries from Vision Secondary School Tawau

Piezoelectric Tiles harness piezoelectricity to generate clean energy from the kinetic energy of moving vehicles. They were awarded RM6,000 worth up to Samsung products.

Fifth Prize:

Waste Reduction – Biodegradable Membrane by Team Renew Shield from SMK Sungai Tapang

The biodegradable membrane is made from eco-friendly kitchen ingredients and natural wax, designed to reduce waste and promote sustainability. They received Samsung products worth up to RM3,000.

For six years, Samsung Solve for Tomorrow has inspired Malaysia’s youth to develop creative solutions to real-world problems using science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By providing students an opportunity to go beyond textbook knowledge and apply STEM concepts to community challenges, the competition sparks early interest in technology-driven careers that help propel the nation forward.

At a recent Design Thinking Workshop, participants shared how the program has positively transformed their perspectives on STEM education. Denielle Leong from Samsung Malaysia Electronics (SME) Sdn Bhd (“Samsung Malaysia”), noted her mentoring experience as an eye-opener. “Our role as mentors is to deepen their current perspectives while allowing them to explore solutions freely. I’ve learned a lot myself through the experience.”

Lydia Karunia Sangeeth, a Computer Science and English teacher from SMK Shah Alam, found Samsung Solve for Tomorrow a powerful platform for her students to explore their passion for STEM. “When I see my students getting excited preparing for it, I get motivated to work closely with them to create solutions using the technologies we have.” She also highlighted the importance of adaptability in the role of teaching and mentoring, especially when technology advancement continues to accelerate.

Students like Harinesvari A/P Sivabalan from SMK Shah Alam said that the competition helped clarify her STEM career path. “One of the key difficulties for us was identifying which issue to address. Our team had to discuss closely with our teacher to ensure that our problem statement and solution were logical,” Harinesvari admitted.

Tan Jiun Kai from SMJK Kwang Hwa and Haziq Nawfal bin Mohd Nizam from SM Sains Kuala Selangor, both saw this experience as transformative.

An avid participant in STEM competitions, Tan saw this opportunity as an excellent platform to develop new skills. “Beyond gaining technical STEM knowledge, I learned to approach problems with a broader perspective. For example, our project focuses on the environment. We will have to consider other social factors when proposing solutions. I believe the ability to see the bigger picture is crucial for navigating the 21st-century world,” he said.

Nizam mentioned, “The competition motivated me to continue researching what’s truly needed to solve a problem. Besides, I get to practice my communication skills and improve my self-confidence when presenting our ideas to others.”

STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—is perceived as complex, challenging, and less appealing compared to fields such as arts, sports, and music. However, in today’s rapidly evolving landscape where artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology thrive, preparing students for future careers is more important than ever. According to the Ministry of Education (MOE), there is a significant growth in STEM enrolment, rising from 41.84% in 2019 to 50.83% in 2024[1]. This 10 percentage point increase marks the highest STEM enrolment in the past decade, signaling a new era where students are eager to embrace STEM learning.

Malaysia’s Emerging STEM Jobs

The demand for STEM related jobs is expected to steadily increase in the coming years. Samsung SFT 2024 competition provides an opportunity for secondary students nationwide to showcase their innovative ideas by addressing real-world problems using STEM principles in a 800-word submission. Entries will be evaluated by Samsung Malaysia and Universiti Malaya based on various criteria such as issue relevance, creativity, feasibility, STEM application, and presentation of innovative solutions. The top 10 teams will advance to the next round, where they will enhance and present their ideas.

The shortlisted entries for Samsung SFT 2024 competition will be revealed on the program’s website in October 2024. Selected participants will benefit from mentorship and guidance to refine their ideas and develop prototypes during a Design to Win Workshop.

In December 2024, winners will be determined through a competitive pitching process.

First Prize: Samsung products worth up to RM28,000^[1].

Second Prize: Samsung products worth up to RM24,000^[2].

Third Prize: Samsung products worth up to RM19,000^[3].

Forth Prize: Samsung products worth up to RM6,000^[4].

Fifth Prize: Samsung products worth up to RM3,000^[5].

Registration for SFT is now open and participants have until 16 September 2024 to submit their entries.

Samsung Malaysia Electronics and Universiti Malaya have unveiled the impressive line-up of 10 semi-finalist teams for the highly-anticipated Solve for Tomorrow (SFT) 2023 competition. This marks the fourth year of the competition, designed to inspire students to embrace innovation and become adept problem-solvers who create solutions to address society’s issues through the application of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

This year’s competition continues to be a competitive one, with ground-breaking ideas pouring in from different schools across Malaysia. Students passionately engaged in addressing one of the competition’s three central themes: Education & Learning, Sustainability & Environment, and Health & Well-Being. After a meticulous evaluation of each submission, a panel of distinguished judges from Universiti Malaya carefully curated the cream of the crop, identifying the top 10 teams to advance to Phase 2 of this prestigious competition.

The 10 semi-finalist teams of the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow (SFT) competition are now moving on to Phase 2, where they will refine their concepts and create prototypes. The mentors from Samsung Malaysia Electronics and Universiti Malaya will help them prepare their presentations for Phase 3 of the competition. In the final round, five teams will compete for impressive prizes worth RM 30,000 of Samsung products.
