The launch of this methodology is part of Samsung’s participation in the Decarbonising the Use-Phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) initiative, through which the company has teamed up with the Carbon Trust, Amazon, Microsoft and Sky to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from use-phase electricity consumption of internet-connected electrical and electronic products.

These organisations are focusing on the use-phase in particular because it is typically the largest source of product’s carbon emissions throughout its entire lifetime. Globally, connected devices currently require approximately 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy annually — similar to France’s total energy use. Therefore, understanding and accounting for products’ carbon impact and finding ways to drive down emissions while devices are being used is a priority for the tech industry.

This new methodology sets out how companies can assess and report emissions using data drawn from devices that are being used by their customers, enhancing the accuracy of reporting that has until now relied upon lifetime forecasts used in current emissions accounting. Tech firms will also be able to account for emissions reductions that have been achieved in the process of using the methodology.

The annual reporting of use-phase emissions and reporting of emissions reductions will lead to increased transparency in communication to consumers, incentivising companies to make reductions while products are still being used. The standardisation and accuracy of the data will also guide companies to identify innovative solutions to further reduce the carbon impact of their devices.

Samsung’s contributions to launching the new DUCD methodology are a continuation of the company’s commitment to finding new ways to save energy. This type of innovation is exemplified by SmartThings Energy, which empowers users to track their energy usage and make better energy decisions, as well as AI Energy Mode, which considers usage patterns and electricity rates to help users better manage energy usage.

Samsung highlighted innovations that combine artificial intelligence and energy efficiency, as well as an in-depth experience of the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo as an appliance that creates a new category in white goods. Samsung product specialists were also on hand to explain the various innovations displayed.

The star of the event was Samsung’s All-in-One washer dryer, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, which features innovative technologies including heat pump technology which uses heat from the air to dry clothes instead of conventional methods, reducing energy consumption and offering more efficient drying. Integrated with artificial intelligence, the AI Wash & Dry function automatically adjusts washing and drying parameters based on sensors that monitor the weight, dirt, and type of fabric of the clothes, ensuring impeccable results in each cycle and promoting water and energy savings.

AI Energy Mode also optimises energy use based on usage patterns and operating conditions, helping to reduce energy consumption and costs without compromising washing and drying performance. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo uses up to 60% less energy during a wash cycle and up to 30% less energy during a dry cycle when using the AI Wash & Dry cycle with AI Energy Mode^[1] switched on, accessible via the SmartThings App^[2]. The appliance also features a larger capacity of up to 25kg, ideal for large families or those looking for practicality, allowing large volumes of laundry to be washed in a single cycle.

In today’s fast-paced world, our homes have become more than just living spaces; they are also sanctuaries for us to rest, recharge, and spend time with our families and loved ones. Insights from a recent Smart Home and Home Appliance study^[1] we conducted among consumers in Australia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam affirm that while the concept of a Smart Home is already widely known, there is still room to make full use of this technology at home. Three of the key benefits that we found consumers are interested in include:

• Having better control of their connected appliances for peace of mind (72%);
• Taking advantage of energy optimisation features to help save both time and money (61%)
• Simplifying chores at home for better productivity (54%).

Optimised Living with AI

The advent of technologies like AI has made all of this possible and much simpler with in-built AI features across our various connected digital appliances and smart devices that are designed to enrich the lives of consumers. This is particularly useful for consumers in our Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) region whom we have found to value home appliances that are able to help them monitor and save on energy usage, automate chores to free up their time, as well as having smart features for better management of their connected appliances.

For example, when it comes to tracking energy usage of appliances in the home, being able to integrate insights into a single viewing pane using SmartThings Energy can help improve how consumers better see and control their usage. This in turn translates into tangible cost savings; this is particularly important as many of our customers within the SEAO region are also grappling with increased energy costs and higher daily living expenses^[2].

Our users can take advantage of AI Energy Mode^[3] in selected refrigerator, room air-conditioner, washing machine and dishwasher models, which users can activate easily via the SmartThings app to save energy. The app also lets users conveniently set energy usage goals and receive notifications when the target for the month has been reached.

At the same time, Samsung is also enabling our users to make conscious choices about their consumption habits. The 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub^TM[4] features AI Vision Inside^[5], to automatically recognise up to 33 fresh food ingredients as they are being put in and out of the refrigerator. This helps users to better manage what’s in their refrigerator, thus contributing to reducing both overbuying and food waste.

Easier Living with the Rise of Personal Home Assistants

Today, AI has permeated our everyday lives, seamlessly integrating with innovative technologies like smart cameras and voice control. These advancements have transformed household appliances into effective companions that work in tandem to enhance living experiences, making it no surprise that tech-savvy consumers^[6] connect to an average of 3.7 devices at home, with the top connected devices being smartphones, TVs, refrigerators and washing machines.

Consumers can tap into Samsung’s intuitive and connected ecosystem for an easier cooking process easier from start to finish. When it comes to ideating recipes and buying ingredients, SmartThings Food lets you conveniently create and check a list of the food in your refrigerator anytime and anywhere, while recommending personalised recipes that can be conveniently sent to the Samsung Bespoke Built-in Oven.

Cleaning elsewhere in the home, too, becomes a more efficient affair thanks to intelligent AI Recognition^[7] on the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, which powers features like AI Floor Detect^[8] that identifies different floor types and automatically decides when its mop should be activated for cleaning.  Simply put, you can let the washing machine and robot cleaner do their jobs, without having to worry if you’ve enabled the right settings.

Using AI Energy Mode with the WindFree Conditioner

Take your energy savings to the next level with the SmartThings Energy^[1], Artificial Intelligence (AI) Energy Mode^[2]. AI Energy Mode uses AI to keep track of usage patterns and power consumption of your appliances, by providing an overview of daily, weekly, and monthly power consumption across Bespoke AI appliances, and analyses the data to provide useful insights through the SmartThings app^[3].

For large families that have daily loads of laundry and dishes to deal with, AI Energy Mode helps you and your loved ones save energy by optimising Bespoke Washers’ cycles based on fabric type and load size, as well as reduce energy consumption of the Bespoke dishwasher by up to 23%^[4].

Similarly for the Bespoke Top Mounted Freezer refrigerator, AI Energy Mode recommends users to switch to AI Energy Mode when an estimated monthly electricity bill goes over preset targets^[5], thus reducing costs and energy use by up to 7%^[6]. It also helps adjust Air Conditioners’ settings based on your usage patterns, room temperature, and humidity.

Forgot to turn off your lights before leaving the house? Fret not about incurring unnecessary electricity costs. The power-off function on the SmartThings app lets you turn off your appliances, such as TVs, kitchen appliances, lights and even plugs^[7] remotely whether you are in another room or outside your home.

With SmartThings Energy^[8] on the SmartThings App, your devices can also be programmed to power down by scheduling. For instance, enable location-based routines and cue SmartThings to turn off your household appliances such as the air-conditioner when all your family members have left home.

Using AI Energy Mode with Samsung Washers

If you are doing laundry often, even more energy can be saved with Samsung’s AI washer line-up, which come with AI Energy mode^[9]. The washer can sense the fabric type and load size to configure wash setting that utilise AI EcoBubble and cool water wash instead of warm. It will get the same clean result with reduced energy use by up to 70%^[10].

During its IFA 2023 press conference, the company highlighted its vision for SmartThings is to enable consumers across Europe to prioritise the topics they care about – from saving energy, increasing security and access to great entertainment to making their everyday lives more efficient. The ever-growing SmartThings ecosystem allows its 285 million users to adapt and personalise their homes to suit their needs, seamlessly connecting and controlling multiple appliances and devices via one app.

Samsung’s presence at IFA 2023 comes as the company shares new consumer research, conducted across Europe to understand evolving needs for technology in the home^[1].

The SmartThings app allows users to control their homes from anywhere, helping them to enjoy seamless entertainment as well as keeping them safe. Across Europe, our homes continue to be more important than ever as they play multiple roles each day – from offices to places for relaxation and entertainment. Seven in ten consumers (71%) agree that technology has a positive impact on their everyday living, including how they interact with their friends and family, how they conduct their chores and how they enjoy their hobbies.

Now, those with a passion for food can fully connect themselves to the joy of cooking and eating with Samsung Food, the new all-in-one app for recipe searching, saving and sharing, meal planning, cooking and grocery shopping. Announced at the press conference, Samsung Food is available in 104 countries and eight languages, and puts the world’s food knowledge at users’ fingertips, empowering them to make the food, health and cooking decisions that are right for them. It also connects to users’ kitchens, instantly sending the right time and temperature to their compatible Samsung oven. With more than 160,000 recipes, there will always be something new to cook.

By the end of the year, using Food AI, Samsung Food will provide personalised recipes reflecting users’ dietary requirements, such as converting recipes into a vegan version in just a few taps. In a further enhancement due later this year, it will link with Samsung Health so tailored meal plans can be adapted to suit preferences and dietary requirements, as well as support users in reaching their health goals. In 2024, using Vision AI technology, Samsung Food will use photos taken of meals to check nutritional information, recognise ingredients and recommend the best recipes to use them in.

As the number one TV brand for 17 years in a row^[2], Samsung has an unrivalled commitment to entertainment. It has completed its super screen line up with the launch of the 98” QLED 4K Q80C, offering incredible contrast and jaw-dropping detail that places viewers in the middle of the action whether gaming or watching films.

Also announced at the press conference was the global launch of The Freestyle 2^nd Gen. This versatile, portable projector delivers a big screen experience wherever the user chooses – even on the ceiling. The Smart Edge Blending feature offers landscape and portrait screen experiences, meaning two Freestyle 2^nd Gen projectors can be paired to give a 160” panoramic viewing experience.

Taking small steps for our planet 

Samsung is committed to developing products and services that help people save money and take steps towards a better planet. These topics are high on the agenda for consumers too, over three quarters (77%) say they seek out tech products that save energy – not only to save money, but for the benefit of the environment too^[3]. Two-thirds (67%) also consider it important that their next appliance can connect to an app that allows them to monitor and reduce their energy consumption^[4].

With energy prices increasing across Europe^[5], 72% of those asked are concerned about the cost of running appliances in their home^[6]. To help combat this, SmartThings Energy can help users optimise the energy used across their appliances to suit their needs and lower usage. For example, AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy allows you to monitor and reduce your washing machine’s energy use by up to 70%^[7] by using Ecobubble to wash with cool water instead of warm.

Samsung has also partnered with global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise and apparel maker Patagonia to find solutions to the issue of microfiber shedding. Speaking at IFA, Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise said: “Through our collaboration with Samsung and Patagonia, Ocean Wise is proud to have shown a way for industry to play its part in stemming the flow of microfibers into the ocean. Through innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter, we can empower individuals to reduce their microfiber footprint at home. It is a simple, everyday solution that our oceans will thank us for.”

Samsung’s journey is constantly evolving as it aims to design technology that helps people make the most of their day while taking small steps to reduce our environmental impact. The Galaxy Z Flip5^[8] and Fold5^[9] and the Galaxy Tab S9 series^[10] feature a variety of recycled materials, including recycled aluminium, glass and plastics sourced from ocean-bound discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the Galaxy Watch6 series incorporate post-consumer recycled plastics. All of these Galaxy innovations come in packaging boxes made using recycled paper material^[11].

Keeping your home secure

Samsung understands the reassurance that smart technology can provide across the generations. Security was an emerging theme from the research conducted. Watching their home while they aren’t there (54%), feeling safer when home alone (39%) and keeping their family safe when they are out of the house (39%) are seen as the key safety benefits of smart technology^[12].

The SmartThings ecosystem includes a range of partners who are committed to helping people keep their homes and loved ones safe. This now includes Yale, a leading brand in home security. The Yale Linus® Smart Lock and the new Smart Opener for Gate & Garage enable doors and gates to be locked remotely via the app to ensure peace of mind for all family members.

Unlocking the future through smart technology 

Samsung is invested in a future built around the possibilities that technology can unlock. One area it aims to make a difference is in making the technology for smart homes more easily available. The research shows a quarter of Europeans consider the inclusion of smart technology to be a key factor in the desirability of their next home and over three quarters of respondents said fully functional smart homes are appealing (77%)^[13].

Understanding this, Samsung is working to make these possibilities a reality and it believes in the power of collaboration when it comes to driving this vision forward. By partnering with ABB Smart Buildings and SMA, one of the world’s leading providers of photovoltaic and storage system technology, it hopes to connect people more closely to their homes by embedding the possibilities of smart technology into houses before they are bought. By integrating ABB and SMA products into SmartThings Energy, homes can become even safer, smarter and more sustainable. For example, the ability to run appliances at the optimum time, tracking energy use to adjust consumption based on energy prices and usage patterns, and optimising energy use based on solar production.
