A Wider Variety of Recycled Materials in More Components

Earlier this year, Samsung expanded its innovative use of recycled materials in product design with the Galaxy S23 series, introducing new materials to more components. The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 advance these efforts, featuring a wider variety of recycled materials^[1] in more internal and external components than previous Galaxy Z series smartphones. The newest foldable smartphones incorporate pre-consumer recycled aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastic sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. They also scale the use of Corning^® Gorilla^® Glass Victus^® 2, which contains an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled glass content.

Not only did Samsung add more types of recycled materials used in each device, but the company also more than doubled the amount of device components that use a minimum of 10% post-consumer recycled plastic or pre-consumer recycled glass, or an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled glass. Both the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5^[2] use recycled materials in 15 device components, an increase from six internal components in the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4.

When it comes to packaging, Samsung continue to advance its efforts to reduce the presence of single-use plastic. That’s why the paper for the packaging box^[3] is made using 100% recycled material.^[4] The company also switched to recycled paper material for the front and back cover protector.

A Device Lifecycle That Lasts Longer

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 continue Samsung’s work to optimize the longevity and improve the upgradability of its smartphones. Each device comes with five years of security updates and four generations of OS upgrades, helping to extend the product lifecycle.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 feature^[30] a wider variety of recycled materials^[31] than their previous generations, including pre-consumer recycled glass and aluminum and post-consumer recycled plastics, sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the paper used for their packaging box^[32] is made using 100 percent recycled material^[33].

These innovations have also been purposefully designed for optimized longevity. Each device comes with five years of security updates and four generations of OS upgrades, helping to extend the product lifecycle.

Availability

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 will be available for pre-order in select markets from 26 July 2023, with general availability starting on 11 August 2023.

Galaxy Z Flip5 lets users express themselves with colors including Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender^[34], as well as a range of accessories^[35] including a Clear Gadget Case, Flap Eco-Leather Case, Flipsuit Case and easy-to-carry Silicone Case with Ring to create a more personalized look.

Galaxy Z Fold5 is available in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream^[36], along with a variety of cases that offer practicality and style including a Slim S Pen Case, Clear Gadget Case, Eco-Leather Case, and a Standing Case with Strap^[37].

With foldable smartphone shipments expected to reach 16 million units worldwide^[2] – an increase of 73% year on year – the form factor is rapidly becoming mainstream, and shipments are expected to grow to 26 million units in 2023. The ease of multitasking on a large screen, and the powerful app optimizations for foldable devices, are helping drive adoption among enterprise users.

As companies shift towards work-from-anywhere policies, they are looking to technology for new ways to maximize productivity. DocuSign,^[6] which offers the world’s leading e-signature solution and is used by 24 of the top 25 Fortune 500 Financial companies^[7] has also been optimized for Andriod 12L. The Galaxy Z Fold4’s large screen takes the hassle out of signing agreements on the go. Users can quickly drag and drop email attachments from multi-view mode directly into DocuSign eSignature, seal deals quickly on the go with Samsung’s S Pen and the dedicated Flex Mode signature.

And, for the financial professionals constantly in and out of the office, DocuSign created a PC-Like experience using Samsung DeX mode. Simply connect the device to a monitor and thanks to DocuSign’s high-resolution support and adaptive design approach, professionals receive the same grade experience for any screen size or orientation.

Samsung also collaborated with IBM^[8] to address challenges faced by financial professionals helping clients work from anywhere. IBM iX, the experience design partner within IBM Consulting, worked with a leading financial institution to develop the new tool, helping wealth advisors quickly access and manage market and portfolio information. The integration of Samsung DeX and S Pen enables users to interact with data, drag and drop files between apps, translate handwriting to text and even capture digital signatures in a full desktop-like environment on their foldable device. Samsung’s philosophy of openness also enabled the incorporation of other popular applications for video conferencing, client contacts, email and schedules within a multi-app interface.

Due to the slimmer hinge and narrower bezel used on the Z Fold4 5G; the phone is lighter^[10] and more comfortable for one-handed use. The Z Fold4 5G’s improved dimensions also result in new screen ratios on the Cover Screen^[11] and Main Screen^[12] for added functionality and an immersive viewing experience.
