During a recent visit to Vietnam, TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics shared his thoughts on the state of the mobile industry, expressing confidence that continuous innovation and creation of unique experiences will be key in reinforcing Samsung’s leadership position.

Despite the current economic climate, global sales of the Galaxy S23 series have been highly positive. TM Roh believes that this was made possible with the coming together of several new mobile innovations developed based on consumer feedback, which sets a new standard in premium smartphone experiences. This includes the advanced camera features in the Galaxy S23 series smartphones, represented by Nightography; smooth gaming experience backed by the devices’ powerful performance; convenient, easy-to-use One UI 5.1; the use of environmentally friendly recycled materials in the Galaxy S23 series and optimization of third-party apps through open collaborations with global partners.

He reiterated that more than ever, consumers are now placing reliability on the top of their list of must-haves. TM Roh said, “Our consumers are looking for more reliable products, reliable brands, and premium high-end products that can provide a good experience.”

Three-pronged Approach to Lead in the Mobile Market

Noting that this user preference trend would be one for the long term, he laid out a three-pronged approach that Samsung is taking to effectively respond to challenges in the mobile market, and at the same time, pave the way for Samsung to reinforce its position as a market leader:

• Enabling New Experiences and Possibilities: Samsung is focusing its efforts on enabling consumers with new experiences and possibilities through their innovative line-up of Galaxy products by continuously creating and providing new innovations and experiences not just in hardware innovations, but also in software and AI, that only Samsung can provide.

For example, Samsung not only pioneered the folding smartphone category but also took foldables mainstream, with the product category growing in popularity globally. This focus on premium experiences is also being driven by features such as the large screen experience on the Galaxy Z Fold series, the enhanced pocketability and selfie experience on the Galaxy Z Flip series, as well as the excellent Nightography and camera capabilities of the Galaxy S23 series, made possible through innovations in AI technology.

• A Galaxy for Everyone: As smartphones are now a part of our everyday lives, there are still many consumers who have yet to own a smartphone. As such, Samsung wants to make Galaxy devices more accessible to all, therefore Samsung has monthly instalments plans and student discount to help more users to live their best lives.

• Premium Quality: With Samsung’s flagship mobile devices at the core of this strategy, Samsung is focused on continuously improving the product quality of all Galaxy devices, ensuring that they deliver not just on the user experience, but also in empowering consumers to work better the way they want to.

Delivering Great Mobile Experiences for All

“At the MX Business in Samsung Electronics, our goal is to provide a great experience to meet the needs of consumers, both now and in the future, through products of various segments,” emphasized TM Roh.

Guided by a firm understanding of the needs and preferences of consumers from different regions and segments, we want to ensure that we are delivering various quality mobile experiences that consumers want. This is especially important in the diverse markets of the Southeast Asia and Oceania region.

“For consumers who are looking for premium smartphones, we offer the Galaxy S series and foldable Galaxy Z Series devices. For those looking for something more affordable yet be able to enjoy mobile experiences powered by 5G connectivity, we have the Galaxy A series,” he explained.

Innovating for the Future

Looking ahead, TM Roh said that consumers across Southeast Asia and Oceania and globally are increasingly expecting a more seamless device experience, centered on the ubiquitous smartphone.

He cites the Galaxy ecosystem, with smartphones, wearables, and tablets, as an example of this unmatched, continued experience that can simplify consumers’ lives.  “We’ve strengthened our entire multi-device experience to allow Galaxy devices to better connect with our TV line and home appliances such as air conditioners, and refrigerators. This is one of our biggest strengths that differentiates the Galaxy ecosystem from competitors. We will continue to build a more powerful and seamless multi-device experience, including strengthening localization efforts to optimize how technology can blend into the everyday for our users through our SmartThings platform.”

TM Roh believes that there is still much potential to innovate in the mobile market across many areas. The innovation of form factors, such as foldables, will enrich the whole ecosystem, driving the development of third-party apps and new user experiences and that continue to redefine the limits of what a mobile device can do.

He also mentioned how the partnership with Google and Qualcomm, announced at Galaxy Unpacked 2023, will explore new possibilities for extended reality (XR) applications, while the creation of new AI-powered services and content, or intelligent in-vehicle experiences and even smarter home appliances, will also contribute towards smartphone innovation in the years to come.

“We will be kept busy bringing new innovations to our consumers. The whole smartphone and mobile industry will continue to evolve and grow in the future.”

Galaxy’s Flagship File Sharing Function: Quick Share

1. File Corruption is a Thing of the Past With Quick Share

When meeting friends after not seeing them for a long time, capturing memories of your time spent together is essential. However, if the Gallery app on your smartphone fills up with photos while spending quality time with friends, there is no need to worry. To avoid the hassle of uploading all the photos to a messaging app or email and downloading them again, Quick Share allows for simple file transfer in a matter of seconds.

The biggest advantage of Quick Share is that users can quickly share photos with nearby Galaxy devices in just a few taps regardless of the number and size of the files. With a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, users can send files to up to eight people at a time.^[1]

Receiving files through Quick Share is simple, from set up to sending and reception. In order to use Quick Share, swipe down from the top of the screen of your Galaxy device and tap on the Quick Share icon from Quick Settings.

For those looking to try out Quick Share, here is how to use the feature in just a few, easy steps:

① Select the file to share à click Quick Share

Select a picture or video in the Gallery app or a file in a folder, and then click the Share icon. After pressing the Quick Share icon in the pop-up window, available Galaxy devices that can accept shared files appear.

② Select Galaxy user to transfer files → Receiving party accepts files

Galaxy devices that can accept files are listed according to sharing preferences that the user has set in advance. When the other Galaxy device accepts the file transfer, the file is sent immediately. These shared files can be immediately found in the Quick Share folder created in the Gallery app without a separate download process.

2. Share Quickly and Seamlessly With Non-Galaxy Devices

What’s more, Quick Share makes file sharing easy not only between Galaxy devices but also with other smartphones.

When using Quick Share with non-Galaxy users, a Galaxy user can select the file they want to share via Quick Share and choose from the following options: (i) Copy link, (ii) Share in an app or (iii) Share using QR code. If the user chooses to share the file using a QR code, the recipient can simply copy or scan the code and receive the file instantly on their smartphone or device. Files uploaded to the Samsung Cloud can also be shared with non-Galaxy users as well.

If “Share in an app” is selected, the link can be sent via a messaging platform right away, making it an effective way to share files to multiple people at once in a group chat. Users can also send original photos and videos in high quality without worrying about deteriorated image quality due to file compression.

It is also worth noting that files uploaded to Samsung Cloud are automatically deleted after a certain period, improving security and user convenience.

3. Share Quickly With A Range of Devices

Quick Share can be used on any Galaxy device that comes with the feature. The instant file sharing feature allows files to move freely across smartphones and Galaxy tablets.

Sharing files between different types of Galaxy devices is also easy and frictionless. To send a file from your Galaxy smartphone to your Galaxy tablet, all you need to do is activate the Quick Share feature on both devices before selecting the files and recipient using Quick Share.

Share Safely by Doubling Security With Private Share

When sharing files containing important personal or financial information, Samsung’s Private Share is there to help your share files securely.

Unlike Quick Share, which uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, Private Share supports file encryption by utilizing blockchain technology. Users can send a variety of files through Private Share, including images, video, audio and documents. 20 files of up to 200MB in total can be sent at once to a designated recipient using a phone number and identification number.

The most notable feature of Private Share is that users can control the recipient’s access permission and the file’s expiration date. Prior to sharing, users can set the amount of time a file can be viewed as well as how the recipient can use the files. Users can also adjust the settings and revoke sharing permissions even after the files have been sent.

The sender can also check whether the recipient has received the files, and whether the files have been opened. To ensure confidentiality, secure files cannot be downloaded, and screenshots cannot be taken, thereby preventing files from being shared to unauthorised parties.

In addition to Quick Share and Private Share, Galaxy users can also use other file sharing methods, such as Dropship and Nearby Share.
