Enhanced AI Enables More Intuitive User Experiences

One UI 7 brings powerful updates to Galaxy AI features^[1] including advanced writing assist tools. Integrated into AI OS, they allow users to boost their productivity where texts can be selected, without needing to switch between applications. This capability expands on the powerful writing assist tools already available to Galaxy users, offering AI-powered options to summarise content, check spelling and grammar, and automatically format notes into bullet points.

Upgraded call features with One UI 7 push the boundaries of communication and connection through call transcripts, with support for 20 languages^[2]. When call recording is enabled, recorded calls will automatically be transcribed for reference later on, eliminating the need to take notes manually while multi-tasking.

Bold New Design for Greater Personalisation and Control

One UI 7’s powerful AI features come with a significant new look, based on a new notification system that streamlines communication with easy access from the device’s lock screen. It includes Now Bar, which highlights relevant activities across various features like Interpreter, Music, Recording, Stopwatch, Maps, Samsung Health, Notes, Emergency sharing, Bixby and more. By offering instant access to important notifications, Now Bar reduces the need to constantly unlock the device and allows users to engage with key information effortlessly. Set to be supported on upcoming Galaxy S Series devices, Now Bar will transform the lock screen experience, which will continue to evolve with more intelligent experiences in the future.

These feature upgrades are all anchored in a simple, impactful and emotive design. Together, these principles shape streamlined and cohesive experiences for Galaxy users. A simplified home screen, redesigned One UI widgets, and lock screen—among other features—work together to grant users granular control over every detail and make customisation intuitive and seamless.

A redesigned camera UX allows more intuitive control over advanced settings. Camera buttons, controls, and modes have been reorganised to make it easier to find the features you need and to give you a clearer preview of the picture you’re taking or the video you’re recording.

For Pro and Pro video modes, the manual settings layout has also been simplified, making it easier to focus on the picture or video you’re shooting. A new zoom control is available when you’re recording in Pro video mode, allowing you to intuitively control the zoom speed for smooth transitions.

The official One UI 7 release will commence with upcoming Galaxy S Series devices, featuring additional AI capabilities including enhanced on-device AI functions, starting from the first quarter of 2025. In line with Samsung’s commitment to extend its OS upgrade policy, the update will gradually roll out to other Galaxy devices.

The One UI 7 beta programme will first be available for Galaxy S24 Series devices in Germany, India, Korea, Poland, the UK, and the U.S., from 5 December 2024. Galaxy S24 Series users can apply to join the beta programme via Samsung Members^[3].

We are at the beginning of the most exciting, and probably one of the most historic moments in technology. The era of mobile AI is here – which for Samsung opened up by the introduction of Galaxy AI features on the Galaxy S24 series, our first AI phone.

To bring the real life benefits of generative AI technology to the Galaxy S24 series, we took a hybrid approach to our AI integration. AI offers so many possibilities, and we believe mobile devices are the primary access point for unlocking its potential as users around the globe continue to rely on their phone for most of their day to day needs.

The essential role that mobile devices play in everyday life means they are very personal items that people use during many critical and memorable moments. We understand these behaviors and believe smartphones should work harder so that users can truly make the most of important moments in a just simpler, more intuitive, and more epic way. We also recognise the importance of privacy which is why we give users full control over what they share and what they keep private.

We believe our hybrid approach is the most practical and reliable solution to meet all these needs and puts Samsung ahead of the curve. We are providing users with a balance between the instant responsiveness and extra privacy assurance of on-device AI, and the versatility of cloud-based AI through open collaborations with industry-leading partners in offering a variety of functions they need for daily life.

Expanding Possibilities with On-device AI

We made the ‘Live Translate’ feature on-device AI based, because voice calls are the most basic feature of a smartphone, yet also an intimate and private means of communication. Samsung has committed to empowering users to communicate without language barriers, while at the same time ensuring every communication is safe and private.

To make this feature a reality, our R&D team worked day and night as part of a collaborative process that truly brought out the best in our teams. From determining the right size of AI language models, to training and testing in real-life scenarios, our R&D organisations within the MX business challenged themselves and pushed beyond the limits of what we thought was possible to get this feature running entirely on-device.

Samsung’s global R&D networks around the world, which are in charge of growing the best talents and developing core technologies in each region, have also played a pivotal role. Samsung Research Centers around the globe, including Poland, China, India and Vietnam have dedicated themselves to developing and expanding the languages supported by Galaxy AI. Languages are cultural, contemporary, and localized, so to help people break down language barriers and communicate more naturally, the role of our local R&D offices is even more crucial in opening up new possibilities for users in more regions than ever before.

Soon, Samsung is extending the power of Galaxy AI beyond Samsung’s own native calling app by expanding Live Translate to other third-party message apps to support voice calls. So you can stay connected with friends or colleagues, communicating on your favorite apps in multiple languages.

And since this feature has been integrated into our on-device AI language translation model, users will be able to experience barrier-free communication without worrying about privacy issues like personal data being shared outside their phone when using Live Translate.

I expect that more mobile AI features will be incorporated inside mobile devices as the intelligent computing power of the latest chips – particularly NPUs – advances at a blazing fast speed, along with other technologies. This will enable more people to embrace AI and make every day more convenient while offering greater peace of mind.

Six ProVisual Engine Features That Help You Capture Life as It Happens

Motion Photo – With the Galaxy S24 series’ new Motion Photo capabilities, Team Samsung Galaxy b-boy extraordinaire Kid Karam’s signature breaking style can be captured in all its dynamic detail without missing a single movement. By recording the preview for up to three seconds, Motion Photo captures a short span of motion in action and compiles it into a single moving image.^[1]

In the Editor app, you can select any given frame from your Motion Photo to save as a standalone image. Thanks to automatic AI upscaling, the selected frame can be saved as a high-resolution image made up of 12MP for richer detail. Motion Photo also provides Super High Dynamic Range (HDR) capabilities, offering crystal-clear photos even when capturing in a backlit environment.

Finally, from the Gallery app, you can compress your whole three-second Motion Photo together to create a single Long Exposure image. This lets you capture, for example, the spectacular movement and colour of an overhead firework display all in one photo. You can also apply other effects, such as Single Take via the Enhance-X app.

Faster Shot-to-Shot Shutter Speed – With a 30% boost in shot-to-shot shutter speed compared to the previous series, the Galaxy S24 series’ camera can take more photos within a shorter time span. This lets you take crystal-clear photos in rapid succession without having to slow down while images process. The next time you’re capturing your dog at the park, faster shots will let you capture every precious moment without missing it.

Instant Slow-mo – For those moments that are begging to be savoured – like your daughter scoring the winning goal at a soccer match or your uncle busting his moves on the wedding reception dance floor – Instant Slow-mo has you covered, requiring no prior setup for the capturing process. Through intelligent AI Frame Rate Conversion (AI FRC) technology, the Galaxy S24 series can transform HD 24fps to UHD 60fps videos into slow-mo epics. FHD 240fps to UHD 120fps slow-mo videos can go further still with super slow motion. By generating new intermediate frames of movement, Instant Slow-mo achieves silky-smooth, highly detailed replays every time. From late March, Instant Slow-mo will expand to support 480×480 24fps videos, allowing users to create social media-friendly video content with ease.

To achieve these slow-mo effects, the Galaxy S24 series uses powerful AI Frame Rate Conversion (FRC) technology:

• First, AI FRC takes every two frames from the video as it was originally recorded and uses a deep learning model to analyse and extract motion information.
• Extracting this information establishes the differences between frames and helps AI FRC interpolate intermediate frames that give the video slower motion.
• This process is carried out twice – in both square dimension and reverse dimension – to boost the accuracy of the new, additional frames that have been generated.
• Then, two fusion processes are carried out: Fusion Map and Residual. Fusion Map detects and extracts 2D outlines to help detect motion differences between frames, while Residual adds extra corrections and post-edits to minute details for enhanced accuracy. This allows the feature to create accurate intermediate frames extremely quickly.
• When this is completed, the outputs of these two processes are fused one last time to render the final, AI-generated intermediate frames that give the video both fluid slow motion and meticulous detail.

Dual Recording – There are times when your reaction to a moment is just as priceless as the moment itself. With Dual Recording, you can record simultaneously with both the front and the rear camera so that your loved ones can see not only how amazing the view from the mountain peak was, but how ecstatic you were to finally reach it.

Upgraded from the previous Director Mode feature, Dual Recording now even lets you record with two rear cameras at the same time – Ultra Wide with 3x, for example – with Full HD resolution supported on Galaxy S24 and S24+ and Full HD and Ultra HD supported on S24 Ultra. With Preview Snap, you can extract a snapshot image from your recording at any time, while dedicated Image Signal Processor (ISP) Block and enhanced ISP capabilities support improved video noise and brightness.

10 ND Filter Types – Natural Density (ND) filters are often attached to professional-grade cameras to help do things like limit light, reduce noise or lengthen exposure. No attachments are required, with 10 different ND filters built into the Galaxy 24 series’ camera for maximum user choice and control. ND-filtered photos synthesise multiple frames at once and analyse object movement to create one still image with a clear sense of living motion in, for example, photographs of waves or waterfalls.

Single Take – Galaxy’s Single Take function lets you capture a range of image types with just a tap – up to 8 in total based on one shot. This means if you want to sneak a quick shot of your friend opening the birthday gift you got them, you don’t need to waste time deliberating over the best camera mode in advance.

AI also enhances Single Take’s pose and skeleton detection capabilities. Previously fine-tuned to analyse human motion, skeleton detection can now recognise pets too, tracking their poses and rapid movements in real time for the best photos, videos and collages of your leaping canines and lounging cats. If a human subject is jumping through the air, for example, skeleton detection identifies when the subject is at their highest point and presents that frame as the best image for the user. When applied to your pet, it analyses your pet’s poses to capture the moment best showing off their facial features.

Corning^® Gorilla^® Armor is the result of an exacting process that covers the glass surface with special ions in nanometer layers — each one thinner than a human hair. The end product is a high-tech material that reduces glare by up to 75%, making the display more readable and minimizing screen reflection even in bright sunlight or harsh indoor lighting.

This process makes the glass display tough, so users of the latest Galaxy smartphone can enjoy greater protection from the everyday wear and tear that gradually damages screens over time. In Corning lab tests, Corning^® Gorilla^® Armor demonstrated that it was more than four times as scratch resistant as as competing display glasses made from aluminosilicates.^[1]

• First up, the Quad Tele System ensures you get optical quality zoom at 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x and every step in between. This feature allows you to effortlessly capture every detail of a performance, wedding or even graduation ceremony, no matter how far away you’re sitting.

• Nighttime is often a memory-making time with friends and family, , but dim lighting conditions can make capturing these moments a challenge. Galaxy S24 Ultra’s powerful Nightography capabilities mitigate this very struggle even from a distance. Compared to the previous model, its sensor has nearly doubled in size from 0.08 square inches to approximately 0.16 square inches, helping Galaxy S24 Ultra capture even more precise details. It also has bigger pixels – nearly 60% larger with a length of 1.4μm on each side of the pixel at 5x zoom^[1]. Combined with enhanced AI ISP, this means the Galaxy S24 Ultra can capture more light and create brighter, less noisy images. What’s more, the photo shutter speed is 30% faster, and the telephoto camera’s optical image stabilization angle is wider. That means you’ll capture clearer images more quickly, even if your hands are a little shaky.
• Or maybe you’ve already captured your shot, but it’s not quite right. This is where Generative Edit^[2] takes the stage, harnessing generative AI to adjust objects and generate a perfectly blended background in their place. You can perfect the moment you captured, creating the ideal memory to look back on. Server-based Generative AI enables edits such as straightening and resizing, then harnesses in-painting and out-painting techniques to fill any gaps in the image. Once you’ve taken your photo, Camera Shift lets you achieve the effect you want by using AI to adjust the angle and perspective.

Samsung will present the AI features of Galaxy S24 series that empower user’s communication and creativity, brought to life in everyday scenarios at the booth. This includes features such as Live Translate^[2] powered by on-device AI for two-way, real-time translations of phone calls that defy language barriers. Circle to Search with Google^[3] enables quick and easy, more intuitive searching to make new discoveries with just a simple gesture. Also on show will be Note Assist,^[4] which simplifies and organizes complex texts, as well as Generative Edit^[5], which allows a user to freely resize or reposition subjects within photos for more creative freedom.

Samsung has also organized a space where visitors can check out the powerful camera performance of Galaxy S24 series. In the zone resembling a dim concert hall, close-up shots can be taken of small objects placed on stage to utilize the Nightography capabilities of Galaxy S24 series, upgraded to be more stable in low light thanks to Galaxy’s AI-based ProVisual Engine.^[6]

These Galaxy AI capabilities are soon to be expanded to existing Galaxy models, including Galaxy Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 series, as well as Galaxy S23 series and S23 FE^[7]. In addition, Samsung is offering the chance to experience enhanced productivity first-hand with Galaxy Book4 series, set to launch globally from February 26. Leveraging Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem, Samsung is showcasing how the home can be turned into a place for healthier living^[10]. Control connected lights to automatically turn off and on for a more optimal sleep^[11] or set alerts as a reminder to take medicine. It also allows a user to track exercises and measure heart rate and calories burned in real-time while following a fitness video on a connected TV, all at the same time.

Earlier this year, Samsung introduced the Samsung Galaxy S24 Series, unleashing a raft of transformational Galaxy AI capabilities, while setting a new direction for the smartphone industry.

During a visit to Singapore, TM Roh, President & Head of MX Business, Samsung Electronics, shared some insights into the big picture of how Samsung is viewing AI, and how the Samsung Galaxy S24 Series marks the first of many steps into an AI-first mobile future. Read on to find out more.

Q: What does AI mean to you, and to Samsung?

A: Simply put, AI is revolutionizing the world, and will be the key to unlocking smarter and better experiences that will redefine our everyday lives. Taking the view from a commercial standpoint, businesses and organizations are already looking to AI to drive everything from further productivity gains to innovating new business models and ways to provide customers with better support and experiences. At the same time, we are seeing governments worldwide invest into nurturing talent, promoting a thriving AI industry, and sustaining it with world-leading infrastructure and research.

As our first AI phone which will lead the Mobile AI era, the new Galaxy S24 Series is a bold step that we have taken to put real and meaningful advances in AI-powered mobile experiences into the hands of consumers all around the world.

Q: Tell us more about what Samsung has been doing with AI. 

A: AI as a technology isn’t new, but it has only really started gaining traction in recent years as both public and industry interest in use cases such as Generative AI started to snowball. We have had our eye on this evolving trend for some time; in fact, we’ve been working hard at including AI-powered functionality in our mobile devices for years now.

Since 2017, the Samsung AI Research Centre (SAIC) has been driving the development of leading AI technologies and AI core platforms for existing Samsung products and services, while also collaborating with various partners to combine generative AI models and with a lightweight design to suit mobile device use cases. The Galaxy S24 Series is the culmination of years of effort and collaboration with partners and other industry leaders. At the heart of the Galaxy S24 Series is Galaxy AI, which is the result of our work to combine and optimize various AI models for the smartphone, in collaboration with industry leaders.

Q: What is it about the Galaxy S24 Series that makes it the ideal vehicle as the flagship for Samsung’s first foray into mobile-AI experiences?

A: Just as how the smartphone has proven to be an essential part of our every day, adding convenience and ease to how we communicate, how we get things done, and how to live better lives, our ethos at Samsung is to ensure that there must be practical benefits to embedding AI functionality into the smartphone.

Generate summaries with Notes Assist on the Galaxy S24 Ultra

Galaxy AI features such as Live Translate and Interpreter help tear down the barriers to communications and enable more meaningful conversations between one another, even if one cannot speak the other’s language. The summary function of Note Assist for example, lets users quickly create AI-generated summaries for later reference and study, while Transcript Assist helps get the busy work of transcribing, summarizing, and translating recordings out of the way, so our users can spend more time on more important tasks.

The result are smartphones like the Galaxy S24 Series which deliver truly meaningful usability and tangible benefits for all our users. This is the beginning of the future of Mobile AI.

Q: How will Galaxy S24 set the stage for Samsung to better compete against the competition?

A: We see Galaxy AI as a key enabler for new user experience paradigms, especially when it comes with the tools that empower creative expression, productivity, and barrier-free communications.

Delivering experiences that not only bring value to the end user, but also elevate their everyday activities in new and more meaningful ways, is extremely important to us. Galaxy AI will be key in powering these innovations that turn possibilities into reality.

Q: How have Galaxy fans in Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) reacted so far to the Galaxy S24 Series?

A: This year, we are both humbled and elated at the market response and the feedback from our fans and consumers for the Galaxy S24 Series. We are already seeing very positive sales results of our latest flagship Series in the SEAO region, and hope the trend continues.

Market research shows that Southeast Asia is one of the fastest-growing markets for premium smartphones and is expected to grow by more than double digits this year. We see great opportunity for growth and look forward to further increasing our presence in the Southeast Asian market.

Q: Finally, can you share with us your vision for an AI-first mobile future?

A: Samsung’s mobile strategy going forward, clearly, is one that will be led by Galaxy AI. Starting with the Galaxy S24 Series, we want to set the global standard and to lead the industry in the Mobile AI era, by creating new demand with an unrivaled Galaxy AI experience.
